Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Petunia. My mom and dad rescued me after bad things happened to me. I have no claws and I was missing over half the fur on my body, was starving and very cold. I was hiding under the neighbor’s house and they gave me food. Now I have a home, good food, and lots of cozy places to nap. Napping with my dad is my favorite thing to do. They call me their Princess. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Keep Up an Exercise Routine During The Holidays Don’t stray too far from your exercise schedule. You may have to move workout times to free up other time later in the day for shopping or parties. Early morning is a good time to exercise because it gets you moving first thing in the morning and might even encourage you to hit the sack a little earlier each night, ensuring you get all the sleep you need. Exercise also can improve energy levels and relieve stress.

Inflammation has been likened to fire in that it is a smoldering process that has the potential to injure tissues, joints and blood vessels. “Acute inflammation” helps the body deal with injury and disease by introducing white blood cells that surround the injured or diseased area and fight off invaders that might cause infection. This explains why cuts and bruises lead to redness, heat, and swelling around tissues and joints. On the other hand, when “chronic inflammation” sets in, white blood cells flood the problem and end up attacking healthy tissues and organs nearby. With this in mind, it is important to treat the inflammation associated with gum disease because it can lead to tooth loss and problems elsewhere.
Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings. These visits are very important - even if you’re one of those people who rarely gets a cavity - because the dentist also checks for the early signs of gum disease, oral cancer, and other potentially serious problems that can only be detected during the dental visit. To schedule an exam, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, at (585) 343-4246. Our office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Inflammation can travel all over the body, which is why chronic gum disease can contribute to heart disease and other health issues.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.
Did You Know? According to Age in Place, nearly 60 percent of available senior income is being spent on housing and healthcare, and those expenditures do not include transportation or food. The rising costs of many necessities can make it difficult for seniors to make ends meet and, as a result, certain money-saving measures are often necessary.

December 12-16, 2016 Monday: Vegetable Lasagna Tuesday: Taco Casserole Wednesday: Roast Pork/Gravy
Thursday: Ravioli/Mushroom Sauce Friday: Pepper Steak/White Rice
• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you.

The Churchville-Chili Chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) recently made school history by inducting 114 new members in a ceremony at the Churchville-Chili PAC. The school has never had so many outstanding students qualify for this honor before. The evening included a chance for members, families and guests to hear from the newly elected club officers who were selected in September and the 2016 Churchville-Chili Teacher of the Year, Kevin Mead. Senior officers for the 2016-2017 school year are: Dana Damiani (President); Kate Wilson (Vice President); Emma Bennett (Treasurer) and Anna Kostarellis (Secretary). Each of the officers shared a brief message with the audience on one of the four criteria for membership in NHS: leadership, character, service and scholarship. The Teacher of the Year award is an honor that goes to a teacher who makes a real difference in the lives of students. Music teacher Mead was nominated last spring by current members of the NHS and the final selection was made by the club officers. This is the second time Mead has received the award. During the ceremony, current members

escorted new members across the stage while biographies from their applications were read by the club officers. District Superintendent Lori Orologio, Senior High School Principal William Geraci and Teacher of the Year Mead greeted and congratulated each student personally. New members received a certificate and signed their name in the club registry. “This is always one of my favorite nights of the school year,” said NHS Advisor Paul Glor. “I’m excited about the volunteer opportunities coming up this year and the chance to work with this amazing group of young men and women.” The club is planning several group activities including fall yard work in the community, ringing bells for Salvation Army and participating in the Daniel’s 5K. The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

REMODEL FOR MAXIMUM ROI Basements. Basement remodels are among the best ways to gain space without going the route of a costly addition, but the key is doing it right. How t o soundproof your hom e W hat’s the first step in sound proofing your home? Finding w hic h rooms have the least amount of sound resistance. To do this, make sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and w indow s. Take a quick w alk through your house and pause for a few moments in each room to evaluate w hich ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a media room or teenage recreational room w here volumes w ill be blasting on TV’s and stereos. W ith this information, you should have a good idea of w here you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are some tips to help you achieve the optimal result of peace and quiet: Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your home, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help w ith the environment and provide a good amount of privacy, they also slow dow n the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your home. Insulate your w alls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors w on’t just drive aw ay excess noise, it w ill also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and c old months. For the best sound proofing and easy installation quality. Seal up all cracks and holes around w indow s and doors, and add double glazed w indow s to your current glass panes. Once you’ve selected the best soundproofing method, implement it and enjoy the bliss of silence throughout your home.

BAY OFDID YOU KNOW? According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 91 percent of long-distance holiday travel is by personal vehicle. And while many people may associate holiday travel with long lines at airport check-in counters and security checkpoints, the BTS notes that just 5 to 6 percent of holiday trips are taken by air. The remaining 2 to 3 percent are taken by bus, train, ship, or another mode of transportation. The average long-distance holiday trip for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday is 275 miles, which is slightly longer than the average long-distance trip during the rest of the year, indicating that many travelers are willing to travel farther for the holiday season than they might be during the rest of the year. In addition, when traveling long distances for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday, travelers spend roughly four nights away from home on average.

Thank you to the kind lady ahead of me at the HOG who passed her store credit on to me. It was about $5.00 - and your thoughtfulness made my day. By the time the clerk told me what you had done, you had already left. I hope you see this because it is NEVER too late to say “Thank you”!!!!!!
Thanks to the unknown person who stayed in the parking lot at a local grocery store after my son finished work and everything was closed to make sure I made it through the snow storm to pick up my son. It was very much appreciated!

It warms our hearts and we feel very blessed knowing that our friends, acquaintances and many others care. Many thanks again and we wish you all a very Happy Holiday season. Sincerely, Ron Roth and Marian Graney-Roth Earlier this week we had dinner at the Village Inn, corner of 98 and 104, and I had the best Prime Rib I’ve ever had. Mark and his staff are some of the friendliest people you would want to meet and the service is excellent. You need to pay them a visit, lunch, supper or Sunday Brunch are all excellent, I know you won’t be disappointed. I’ve eaten in a lot of places in WNY as well as down the east coast, this is the best. Ron Montague Brockport NY

When and why did the relatively new custom of the bridal couple “smashing” pieces of their wedding cake into each other’s faces become acceptable, expected and/or cute? In most cases, within hours of the performance, the couple has stood “in the presence of God and this company” and promised to care for and honor each other. Are they breaking a solemn vow almost immediately? If at another time, they acted in a similar manner in any public place, at the least they would be asked to leave. In a more serious instance someone could be charged with assault/ battery. I think this is so hypocritical whenever I read about fundraisers for schools, sports & sponsored by healthcare organizations, and the tickets for sale note ‘alcoholic beverages’, like wine, beer, cocktails. Alcohol is becoming the top killer of young people and innocent victims. So many people need help through health care

facilities for alcohol addiction, and yet, fundraisers still include alcoholic beverages. In today’s tumultuous society, alcohol exasperates problems instead of reducing them. Is it time for “Alcohol-Free Communities”? It has worked for Smoke-Free communities, now we need to do the same for alcohol. Healthcare costs are higher from alcoholrelated costs, inc. domestic violence, addiction, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, mental health, car/boat accidents, etc. You may not agree with this young man’s protest, but the FIRST Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives him and every other American the right (and some might point out also the duty) to free speech. Those who fought and died for this country fought and died for this very right. And exactly why does his protesting injustice mean he has to give up his living? The very fact that he is a famous football player gives him a larger voice to use in protest so that maybe more people will listen. Also, if you had bothered to “Google” his name, you would have found out that he was born in Milwaukee, WI, which, last time I checked, is still part of the U.S.A. The more you know...

“Affluence without simplicity is a giant trap. Every saint who ever lived, lived simply… not because he was holier but because he was smarter…”
~ Quoted in Christian Science Monitor
No matter how much material things we acquire, most of us want more. We can recite quite a list of things we think we’d enjoy having if only we could afford them. The world’s wealthiest people are the first to admit that money cannot buy happiness. The smartest people have learned that the mere accumulation of things will not bring lasting satisfaction. Why not be content to live as the smartest saints do… simply. We are always available to help in any way that is needed. We help individuals to make funeral arrangements both at time of need or well in advance of need. How can we help you?

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.
