EXCELLENCE IN SURGICAL CARE Our friendly office personnel will make you feel comfortable and help to make your visit as positive as possible. We expect our own doctors to provide us with comforts, a friendly and attentive staff, and a high level of professionalism, and it wouldn’t make sense if we didn’t do the same for you. We work with several insurances. Please call to learn more.
Thinking about dental implants? Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.
Home from College? Need your wisdom teeth out? Wisdom Teeth Extractions, Gum Treatment or Surgery Dr. Andrew M. Steinhilber is both a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and a Periodontist (gum surgeon). He is licensed and certified in the delivery of general and IV anesthesia, making your surgical experience as comfortable as possible. His team has the skills required to provide the quality surgical care you deserve. They also provide IV anesthesia for patients who are anxious about routine dental treatment by their dentist.
Anxious About Having Surgery? Go No Further! Dr. Andrew M. Steinhilber is a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon with 6 years of surgical residency training and over 20 years of surgical practice. He has extensive training in extractions of all types, including wisdom teeth and Dental Implants. He is a Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center and is very active in teaching surgical residents. We are the place to seek treatment! We have extensive training in IV and General Anesthesia, providing patients with the most comfortable environment for surgery! Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons are the only specialists properly qualified and trained in Oral, IV and General Anesthesia. No weekend learner courses here! He will be very happy to educate you about your treatment and his staff is also nationally certified and will make you feel more than comfortable.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 9, 1981, a nuclear accident at a Japanese power plant dumps 16 tons of radioactive waste into Wakasa Bay. Despite the risk to people eating contaminated fish, the public was not told of the spill for more than a month. Fish in the area displayed mutations for several years afterward.

Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of. * Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception. * If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed. * If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief.
“Conditions are never just right....” ~ William Feather Feather is talking to those of us who never seem to manage to get started toward our goals. We resolve to do better, to accomplish more, to eliminate our bad habits or to help others, but somehow we never actually start. We explain (to ourselves) that we’re waiting for the right conditions to prevail. In truth, the conditions may be exactly right but our excuses are based on labeling current conditions as unsuitable. If we really want to accomplish anything, we must accept conditions as they are, or alter them to better suit our needs. We are well qualified by training and experience to provide comforting help to bereaved families We will provide any information about funerals you may desire. Phone us, please.

I want to thank my neighbor across the street on Broxbourne Drive in Fairport for helping to plow my driveway after the snowstorm on February 16 when he saw that my snowplow was too small to tackle the amount of snow that had piled up on my driveway. He wouldn’t even accept the money I offered him for his troubles. I want to thank the Webster Goodyear on Empire Blvd. for filling my tires with air when they were low on February 13 during the coldsnow spell we had that weekend. The man not only filled my tires, he didn’t charge me for it. I was on my way out to Hilton to see my girlfriend and I made it with plenty of time to enjoy together! I wish to send a big shout out THANK YOU to the snow plow driver who pushed the snow out of my
Page 14
driveway Tuesday 2/16/16. I was out shoveling the remaining piles from an earlier plow, when you stopped and pushed it out of the way! What a blessing it was to me! You are an angel! Thank you from the house near the LeRoy American Legion! I’d like to thank all those good citizens who helped me round up my two horses when they decided to make their great winter escape on Wednesday morning 2/17/16. They trotted down snow covered roads, Jackson & South, Holley. Cindi Davis saw me trying to catch the rouge ponies and gave me a ride to keep up with the horses. Once I caught the horses I had to walk them home. Cindi stayed behind me with her car flashers on to warn traffic. Two other good citizens helped, John Carp & a red SUV; I was unable to get her name. A big THANKS to all!!

I will make this short because it is sad. My wish is that whomever owns our town cemetery will put a covering over the fence spikes so the baby deer don’t get caught and die. centers, stores, markets, playing fields, doctors offices, business offices, dangerous structures, emergency access points for trails, airports, fire houses. All places we receive calls from multiple times a year. As a volunteer member over 40 years, I find that every time we are in the community we see and do something different. Join us, we need more U’s or soon we all will be paying more taxes.lf is it worth it?! I think not! Is this true? When a person is not employed--at all on any books anywhere-and has a few side jobs and earns cash--does that person file taxes AND GET A REFUND? What a scam, if true, when our military people don’t always receive a paycheck on time... Family members of the local mobile home park get special treatment from the employees who work for the park. And the employees happen to be relatives. They get their driveways plowed for free. Work done on their home for free. They can use empty lot parking for free – where we get charged $25. The rest of the residents have to pay for everything! And get rent hikes!! In this mobile home park – there is no justice!

Diet and exercise needs change as men and women age Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people. One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to detect as you get older. In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie intake, seniors should continue to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy. While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channe • On March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army begins training dogs for the new War Dog Program, or K-9 Corps. age, and according to the Mayo Clinic if you avoid strength exercises you can eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. Strength training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures. In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will begin to burn calories more efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more productive. Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients. The body’s nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with their physicians.

D id you k now ? Fireflies are often seen lighting up the night sky on w arm evenings. They are particularly abundant during the summer months. One reason that fireflies glow is to attract mates. M ales w ill flash, and females w il l respond to mates they find interesting. Fireflies also may glow to avoid predators. The luciferase enzyme in fi refly cells causes a chemical reaction that stimulates light, a phenomenon called bioluminescence. Fireflies are filled w ith lucibufagins, a poor-tasting chemical that turns off predators from attacking the blinking bug. Some fireflies cannot light up at all and use pheromones to attract mates. Fireflies can be fun to catch and releas e and also beneficial to have around. In the larval stage, fireflies w ill eat destructive insects. Adult firefl ies may feed on nectar and could help to pollinate plants. Despite their name, fireflies aren’t really flies. They a ctually are a type of beetle. Fireflies are difficult to spot during the day because they’re often resting on leaves or plants. It’s only at night w hen their brilliant light show comes alive.

Elementary students learn the power they have to change the world On January 25, 2016, students at Byron-Bergen Elementary School hosted representatives from the Ugandan Water Project, a humanitarian organization headquartered in Bloomfield, N.Y., that works with communities in Africa to provide safe, accessible drinking water. After learning how precious water is to children and families in Uganda, students took on the challenge to help raise funds to install a rainwater collection system at a school there. The system will serve a community of almost 400 people for up to 35 years. Byron-Bergen students will change lives. “It is just as important to us to help kids here in Byron-Bergen see how powerful they are; how every one of Students shake their tail feathers them is capable of changing the world, as it is to bring safe drinking water to as part of a traditional Ugandan dance. villages in Uganda,” said Ugandan Water Project Executive Director James Harrington. “Our purpose is to help kids grow on both continents.” The connection between Byron-Bergen and Uganda began last year with a chance meeting between Harrington and third-grade teacher Lynnette Gall. Thanks to the elementary school’s Character Education Committee, with help from educational experts at the Ugandan Water Project, teachers schoolwide are incorporating the concept of water as a valuable resource into their studies of world culture, geography, and science. Students will learn how water is used, where water comes from, about the water cycle, and the problems caused by unequal distribution of water around the world. The Ugandan Water Project presentation began with joyful Ugandan folk music played by Harrington, and a chance for children to try out traditional dance steps. Students then experienced what it is like to try to carry a 40- to 50-pound container of water–a task faced by many Ugandan children who live over an hour from their water source. Harrington and Students try to imagine carrying heavy containers Ugandan Water Project Communications Lead of water over long distances. Megan Busch then spoke about their water projects, over 250 currently, and demonstrated how something as simple as a small filter can make unsanitary water safe to drink. The nonprofit Ugandan Water Project was founded in 2008, and works with over 200 communities in Uganda. Their water solutions include rainwater collection systems, well repair and water purification systems. BRUSHING UP ON YOUR TECHNIQUE While many people have been led to believe that they should brush their teeth with up-and-down motions, the proper way to brush is actually in circular motions. Not only does this way of brushing get tooth surfaces clean, but it also massages and stimulates the margins of the gums. For individuals with crooked teeth, it is important that they angle their brushes so that they can get into nooks and crannies that they might otherwise miss. As far as the amount of time needed to get teeth completely clean, it takes about two minutes. To make optimum use of this time, it helps to divide the mouth into quarters and spend at least 30 seconds brushing each quarter thoroughly. Are you brushing your teeth, gums, and tongue correctly? When you
understand the importance of optimum dental health, we can help you maintain a healthy mouth, as well as treat the causes and symptoms of any dental condition. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’re currently accepting new patients and welcome you to call at 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. The best time to brush teeth in the morning is before breakfast. Otherwise, acidic and sugary foods weaken enamel and leave it vulnerable to the erosive effects of brushing.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of ultrasounds during routine pregnancies? How many typically are performed, and are there any possible negative effects on the fetus? Are doctors today performing more ultrasounds (including 3-D ultrasounds) just because they can and because it’s exciting for the expectant parents, or is there a medical reason for performing these? My daughter-in-law is in her sixth month and has had two ultrasounds, plus a 3-D session. She is under the impression that she will have at least one more. To my knowledge, this is not a high-risk pregnancy (she’s 26 and everything is going fine). I’m just wondering if so many sessions are really needed and what is known about the effects on the fetus. -- G.M. ANSWER: There is some controversy over whether an ultrasound poses risks to the developing fetus. The Food and Drug Administration has noted that there may be some heating of tissues and that any long-term risks are unknown. I did find studies showing that there is no long-term risk of leukemia, hearing loss or abnormal eye development. A 2013 guideline from multiple groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recommended a standard first-trimester ultrasound, and a standard second- or third-trimester ultrasound. Any other ultrasounds would be based on a clinician’s concern for a potential problem. The guideline specifically states: “Fetal ultrasound should be performed only when there is a valid medical reason, and the lowest possible ultrasonic exposure settings should be used to gain the necessary diagnostic information.” I don’t have enough information to know why your daughter-in-law has had more ultrasounds than is usually recommended for a normal pregnancy. Perhaps her obstetrician has a low-level concern she hasn’t shared with her, or your daughter-in-law with you. While not the case for her, I am concerned about the growing trend of so-called keepsake ultrasounds that are not performed for valid medical reasons, such as those done in shopping malls. These might not be administered with the same degree of expertise and safety as a medical ultrasound. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78 and have had urinary tract infections continually for the past eight or nine months. My urologist prescribed methenamine for six months, then a month of cephalexin, then back to the first prescription. Why is it so hard to get rid of UTIs? What would you recommend? - A.C.S. ANSWER: Frequent urine infections are common. However, it is important to find out if this is the same infection that hasn’t ever gone away, or a series of new infections. An infection that doesn’t go away needs an evaluation for something abnormal in the urinary tract, such as a kidney stone. Your urologist is treating you with medication to prevent new infections. Methanamine is a urinary antiseptic, and cephalexin is a broadspectrum antibiotic. You didn’t tell me if you are a man or a woman. Men with recurrent infections should be evaluated for prostate issues. Women with recurrent UTIs frequently are affected by atrophic vaginitis. There are many other causes. It’s worth discussing further with your urologist. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Dog-Proof Hardwood Floors Pet parents may resign themselves to the fact that hardwood floors aren’t practical. But that doesn’t have to be the case. It’s possible to have and maintain hardwood floors and still enable pooches to enjoy rooms with wood floors. * Keep dogs’ nails trimmed short so that they do not scratch or scuff wood floors. * Dogs that tend to grow long fur between the pads of their feet may need to have that fur trimmed as short as possible. This will help improve the traction the dog will have when walking on the wood floors. * If dog bowls are kept on the floor, use a mat that will protect against spills, drips and slobber. Something that will not allow moisture to bleed through onto the floor is ideal, as is a mat that will contain spills.

* Place runners in high-traffic areas so that the dogs have an easier time of walking from room to room. * Clean the bottom of paws when the dog comes inside from the yard so that dirt won’t mar or ruin the floors. * Choose distressed-looking floors, so if scratches resulting from dogs’ nails do occur, it will blend in with the flooring and not stick out like a sore thumb. * Ask to have a thick layer of clear-coating applied to the floors to further protect them. * Do not encourage doggie horseplay on the wood floors, even if it is humorous watching the pooch slide around and try to get footing. * Consider a floor wax product to improve a dogs’ traction on the floors and reduce their propensity to claw-in to get a good grip. Getting Started: Making the Most of an Internship Today’s college kids are well aware of the job market that awaits them upon graduation. With an economy still on the mend and unemployment rates still high, college students across the country know that their post-graduation dream job is no guarantee. As daunting as entering the job market amidst the ongoing economic woes might seem, college students or even recent graduates can take steps to make themselves more attractive to prospective employers. Perhaps no such step has been more popular over the years than securing an internship. Internships are designed to give current students or recent graduates an entry into a field that interests them, providing an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and pad their resumes in the meantime. As valuable as a good internship can be, it can also prove a lost opportunity for those students who don’t recognize the opportunity at hand. To make the most of an internship, students or recent graduates should consider the following suggestions: • Find one that’s the right fit. Some students accept an internship simply because it looks good on a resume. While it’s true an internship stands out to hiring managers or other human resources personnel, students must find the right fit to make the experience truly valuable. For example, students who accept an internship outside of their major might not approach it with the same work ethic they would if they were to find an internship in a field they want to work in. That indifference, coupled with the lack of financial compensation commonplace with most internships, might lead to a less inspired effort, which won’t lead to a strong recommendation from bosses down the road. The recommendation could prove as important as the internship itself when it comes time to look for full-time work. So when seeking an internship, students should not simply settle on one because it’s offered. Rather, students should choose an internship that’s in a field they’re genuinely interested in. • Routinely meet with supervisors. Because most internships are during the summer, interns have a way of getting lost in the shuffle while their supervisors are away on vacation. Interns should meet, or at least discuss via the telephone or e-mail, regularly with supervisors to review their performance. This exhibits enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, while also putting interns in a position to get the most out of their internships. • Treat the internship like a lucrative full-time position. At times, being an intern can prove pretty awful. Most interns don’t get paid, despite working long hours and wearing many hats for their employers. As difficult as it may seem at times, interns should treat their internships as if they’re getting paid lots of money. That means showing up on time, working hard, staying late if necessary, and most of all, not complaining. Negative attitudes have ruined many an intern. Interns must remember that an internship is not a right, but a privilege, one that can lay the foundation for a successful career. Treating an internship like a lucrative position helps interns stay focused and work hard, even when it’s tempting to kiss that nonexistent paycheck and long hours goodbye. • Don’t be pigeon-holed. Some internships are better than others, and the best ones often rotate interns throughout several departments. That enables interns to learn more than one aspect of the business, possibly helping them choose the area they like most and the area they would prefer to avoid when it comes time to job hunt. Even if a company does not rotate its interns, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for an intern to learn more than his or her job entails. Before going it alone, interns should discuss with their immediate supervisor if it’s possible to learn additional aspects of the business. Offer to come in on off days or stay late to see how the whole operation works. This also allows interns to meet more people, which can only help when the time comes to find fulltime work. • Remember it’s only temporary. Some interns love their internships and don’t mind working free for long hours. Others are not so lucky and fight the urge to quit on a daily basis. For the latter, the best advice is to remember an internship is only temporary. As hard as it can be to get out of bed and go work for no pay all day, it’s imperative interns keep a positive attitude regardless of how little they like their internship. Internships last roughly three months, so even the worst one with the worst boss will be over soon and students will still be able to make a valuable addition to their resume.
