Breakfast Pizza Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

W hen I stand before God at the end of my life, I w ould hope that I w ould not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’ - Erma Bombeck

Thank you, Genesee Valley Penny Saver… Our [employment] ad last week said “Apply within M-F, 10am-4pm.” So yesterday at 10am was essentially the first time applicants could come in to apply - by noon we already had like 6 applications. Just another example of why I love advertising with you:) Thanks! ~ Darcy Porter, Director of Marketing, Terry Hills Golf Course, Restaurant, & Banquet Facility

“A child educated only at school is an uneducated child...” ~ George Santayana It seems likely that professional educators subscribe without reservation to Santayana’s “thought.” Some parents seem to feel that the public schools are fully responsible for the education of their children, and they feel absolutely no responsibility for assisting. Indeed, the “support” from such homes may be negative. The schools have a child for a few hours each day. It is in the home where children learn some of the most important lessons. The parents who truly love their children will do all they can to supplement the school’s efforts, especially in the examples they set. We recognize the need of some families for a minimum services at minimum cost. We offer immediate disposition when such service best meets a family’s needs.

Thinking about dental implants? Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.

Home from College? Need your wisdom teeth out? Wisdom Teeth Extractions, Gum Treatment or Surgery Dr. Andrew M. Steinhilber is both a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and a Periodontist (gum surgeon). He is licensed and certified in the delivery of general and IV anesthesia, making your surgical experience as comfortable as possible. His team has the skills required to provide the quality surgical care you deserve. They also provide IV anesthesia for patients who are anxious about routine dental treatment by their dentist.

Anxious About Having Surgery? Go No Further! Dr. Andrew M. Steinhilber is a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon with 6 years of surgical residency training and over 20 years of surgical practice. He has extensive training in extractions of all types, including wisdom teeth and Dental Implants. He is a Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center and is very active in teaching surgical residents. We are the place to seek treatment! We have extensive training in IV and General Anesthesia, providing patients with the most comfortable environment for surgery! Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons are the only specialists properly qualified and trained in Oral, IV and General Anesthesia. No weekend learner courses here! Eating right can improve quality of life Legend states that on April 2, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was the first European to discover modern-day Florida when he traveled on a quest for the mythical “Fountain of Youth.” While modern science has proven that there is no mystical fountain or body of water that can reverse or slow down the aging process, there are many steps people can take to age well and prolong their lives. Eating the right foods is one way to age well. According to Ralph Felder, M.D., Ph.D., coauthor of “The Bonus Years Diet,” reversing the aging process internally is more difficult than outward cosmetic changes. But the right foods can go a long way toward increasing both life expectancy and quality of life. Those who want to employ diet to increase their life expectancy may want to start adding more of the following foods to their breakfast, lunch and dinner plates. · Broccoli, grapes and salad: According to Health magazine, researchers have found that compounds in these three foods boast extra life-extending benefits. · Berries: In addition to their abundance of antioxidants, berries have other benefits. A 2012 study from Harvard University found that at least one serving of blueberries or two servings of strawberries each week may reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. · Fruits and vegetables: Produce is good for the body because it’s low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. Numerous studies have indicated that diets plentiful in fruits and vegetables help people maintain a

healthy weight and protect against cardiovascular disease. · Whole grains: Whole grains pack a lot of nutrition into a low-calorie food. Whole grains help protect against type 2 diabetes, and researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center found study participants whose diets included plenty of whole grains and fruit cut their heart disease risk by almost half compared to those whose diets favored meat and fatty foods. · Red wine: A glass a day for women and no more than two glasses daily for men can be beneficial. Moderate consumption of red wine has been shown to slow age-related declines in cardiovascular function, according to the American Heart Association. · Fiber: Increase your fiber intake for a longer life. Research from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that the more fiber you include in your diet, the lower your risk of coronary heart disease. The daily recommendation is 25 to 35 grams. While there may be no such thing as the fountain of youth, a healthy diet can help men and women prolong their lives. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 18, 1834, in England, six English agricultural laborers are sentenced to seven years of banishment to Australia’s penal colony for their union activities. Their crime: They agreed that they would not accept work for less than 10 shillings a week. DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion on enlarged prostate. My primary-care doctor sent me for a blood test and said my PSA number was too high, then sent me to a urologist. He said my bladder is not emptying and that I am having urine retention in the bladder. After one week of medication (Rapaflo), I had a catheter inserted for another week. He measured the urine in the bladder, and it was 880 ml. Now he is suggesting surgery. Is he going too fast? What are your thoughts on the procedure and side effects? Will this correct the problem? -- D.G. ANSWER: The bladder is drained via a tube called the urethra, and in men, the urethra runs right through the middle of the prostate. As men get older, the prostate commonly enlarges, and this can cause resistance to flow. The symptoms can range from mildly annoying to complete obstruction. Complete obstruction is an emergency, since the kidneys will fail within a few days of being unable to drain urine at all. But the obstruction does not need to be complete in order to cause kidney damage. It’s the high pressure in the urethra, bladder and ureters (the tubes that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder) that causes kidney damage. Placing a catheter allows the urine to drain at low pressure if the problem is in the urethra. Normal bladder capacity is between 300-400 ml. At 880 ml, you would experience very abnormal bladder drainage and would be at high risk for ongoing kidney damage. Thus, I completely agree with your urologist that something, probably surgical, needs to be done quickly. It’s not completely clear to me whether your inability to drain the bladder is due to obstruction from enlarged prostate, even though an elevated PSA suggests that this might be the case. It also is possible that there is something wrong with the nerves that go to or from the bladder. I suspect your urologist has done additional bladder tests to help sort this out. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement as well as cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have weaned off Zoloft, and I noticed a swelling of my fingers -- I can’t get my rings on. Do you think it is related? -- E.P. ANSWER: Discontinuing an antidepressant such as sertraline (Zoloft) certainly can cause symptoms. Dizziness, fatigue, muscle aches, anxiety and irritability are common. It happens more frequently if the drug is suddenly stopped versus tapered down over weeks. Paroxitine (Paxil) seems to have the highest incidence of symptoms on stopping. However, I haven’t seen swelling as a result of stopping sertraline. It may be related, but I doubt it. Is it possible that you are consuming more salt? That’s the most common reason for increased fluid in the fingers over a short time. I would see your doctor if it doesn’t go away in a week or so. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. More than any single writer, Buntline was responsible for creating a romanticized and misleading image of the American West. We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy THE IMPORTANCE OF A COMPREHENSIVE EXAM A comprehensive dental exam goes far beyond looking for signs of tooth decay. It’s also necessary to take a complete medical history to alert the dentist to health conditions and/or medications that may affect future oral health and dental treatments. The dentist or hygienist will want to assess the health of the gums as well, by measuring the depth of periodontal pockets, plaque/calculus buildup, and inflammation. This is important because gum disease can lead to tooth and bone loss and has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases. In addition, it’s important to look for signs of mouth and throat cancer, as well as other suspicious growths and cysts that a dentist may be the first to spot. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we believe that preventive dental

care, including regular professional care, daily brushing and flossing, and a well-balanced diet, is key to keeping your teeth and gums in good health well into your later years. Let us help you keep that dazzling smile. Call 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurance. P.S. A comprehensive dental exam includes assessments of tooth positioning; tooth loss; signs of tooth grinding and jaw clenching (which can lead to headaches, tooth erosion, and TMJ disorders); and signs of how previous dental work is holding up.

Pit ch in t o k eep beaches clean

Life is simple, it’s just not easy. ~Author Unknown

Visiting the beach is a great w ay to cool off from the summer heat. But many beaches are not as clean as they can be, and such pollution can jeopardize beach visitors and the animals that call beaches home. Litter that finds its w ay into storm drains may one day end up on beac hes and in oc eans. The Southern California Coastal Water Research Project says that plastic is the most common type of w aste found on beaches. Plastic pellets are the most abundant type of trash found along the California coast, but foam plastics and hard plastics also are abundant on beac hes, both in Southern California and across the country. Cigarette butts and paper trash also pose a threat. Trash can be harmful to all sorts of coastal and marine life. M any animals eat the trash, mistaking it for food. But animals cannot alw ays digest trash, w hich can fill up the stomach and digestive tract, ultimately leading to starvation. Animals also may get tangled in trash and be unable to w alk, sw im or fly aw ay. Trash also may contain harmful chemicals that poison animals and may inadvertently end up harming humans w ho eat different sea creatures. In addition to being mindful of litter and properly disposing of items at home, eco-conscious men, w omen and children can join forces w ith beach cleanup initiatives to help remove tons of trash from beaches across the globe. Cleanup groups typically consist of volunteers w ho sw eep beaches in ongoing efforts to address w aste and keep beaches clean.

On February 16, a snowstorm made roads icy and difficult to travel. On my way back home from a doctor’s appointment, I was unable to stop my car at the railroad crossing and slid into a snowdrift. My car was very close to the crossing gate. When the gates came down, they hit my car and went back up. I could not move the car forward or back. The Corfu Police responded when I called 911. Friends and neighbors on Snipery Road came to help. Within an hour, my car was pushed out of the snow and I was safe at home. Thank you to everyone who came to help, especially my neighbor Adam who was the first to come to my aid and my daughter Rachel who tried her best to shovel me out. HOW TO DONATE ITEM S INSTEAD OF CASH Carefully examine items before donating them. Items that have seen far better days likely w on’t have much value to charitable organizations. Once such items are donated, the charity must then make an effort to dispose of them. That can cost the charity time and money, neither of w hich charities have in abundance. Before donating noncash items, examine them carefully to make sure they’re items the charity can make use of or sell. New or unused items w ill likely pass the test, as w ill items w ith very little w ear and tear. But an armchair that’s show ing its age or an old w ashing machine that barely w orks likely w on’t prove too valuable to the charity. But that does not mean such items have zero value.

Here are som e tips to build an outdoor sanctuary in your ow n backyard. Create a w alkw ay - A beautiful w alkw ay around your backyard, through different scenic zones, can help you to clear your m ind of troubled thoughts. This w alkw ay can be a paved path, or com posed of stepping stones or gravel and w oodchips. Consider planting different gardens close to the w alkw ay. Natural m aterials like cedar w eather naturally, and are rotresistant, giving hom eow ners a durable and long-lasting m aterial to enjoy for years to com e. Me and My Partner By Patricia Cappotelli This is the story of the connection between me and a beautiful bay colt that I fell in love with and raised. Partner was born on March 16, 1991, with a large white blaze shaped like a backward question mark on his forehead. When he was a weanling, we purchased a little black colt so he would have a playmate to grow up with. Every day I would go to the stable on my lunch hour and hand feed him to be sure he would grow up big and strong and to make an everlasting bond between us. When he became a yearling and was turned out in a pasture The author and Partner, in happier times at a nearby farm, I went every day and brought him and his friend carrots. No matter where he was way out in went to my Facebook page and saw a video of the field, when I called out “Partner” he would come someone leading my former horse down the aisle of a killer pen in PA with this caption: “Hia running to the fence. That fall he went into training with my Partner, 24 years-old, needs donations to save him husband to become a race horse. My family had from being slaughtered.” I felt sick, wondering always been in the horse racing business, but I had where he had been all these years and why anyone never really learned how to harness them. Now that would mistreat this gentle, innocent animal. Tears I had my own horse that I trusted completely, I ran down my face as I messaged a girl I had just wanted to be his handler at the track. I learned how met who founded ROC Standardbred to find to harness him and went to the tracks with him “after racing” homes for Standardbreds. She when he raced. Unfortunately, after several years of immediately went into action, along with racing he broke a coffin bone in a race. This is a very LifeHorse, soliciting money to bail Partner out of serious injury that requires at least a year’s stall rest the pen. I also posted on my Facebook page that to heal; even then there is no guarantee of a return help was needed. The next morning I received a call telling me to racing. Since we do not own a farm of our own and that enough money had been raised and Hia stabling space was limited, my husband made the Partner was on his way to Breezy Hill Stables in business decision to sell Partner. I was heartbroken Maryland. I was told a dear friend of mine put up and couldn’t even go to the stable to say goodbye to all of the remaining money to save him. Since then, I have seen pictures of Partner at him. I’m sure he was confused as to why I left him, but I never forgot him and kept his picture on the the rescue stable and was happy to see he was with wall (where it still is today). Time passed and a another black horse like the one he originally grew fellow horseman at the track told us that Partner up with. Life takes strange turns, sometimes good had a good home. This made me very happy. and sometimes bad. I hope Partner gets to live However, a year or so later he told us that Partner peacefully the rest of his life, and if he is anywhere had died after a fencing accident. As years went by, nearby I would love to visit him one more time. I whenever horse stories were discussed I always wonder what he would say to me if he could talk, but I know I would say to him “I am so sorry that talked about my deceased friend. Imagine my complete shock when I recently I couldn’t protect you from such a terrible life.”

2-17 was Random Act of Kindness Day. I didn’t know. Thank you, Mr. Phone Serviceman for helping me get to the end of my driveway on Wednesday 217. I was shoveling; you came to fix a phone in house. Then came out, picked up a shovel and helped me get to the road in the last 1/3 of driveway. We talked and shoveled together. You made my day proving that chivalry is NOT dead. Thank you far more than you will know.

They give a sense of security to those who have to call 911 in the night for help, knowing that they will be at your home in a very short time, assisting you during some medical crisis. Thank you all! The Italian Red Head and family in Hamlin

As of late, paramedics and volunteers/ the ambulance, have been called to our home for our son who had back surgery. Every one of these individuals are WONDERFUL and special people who go out of their way to respond to the needs of others. My family and I are truly appreciative of them, and can’t thank them enough. I would like to give a HUGE thank you to the guy in the tow truck who saw me stuck on Bright/ Hen TL road during that snow storm on Tuesday and stopped to pull out my tractor trailer! Also, to all the police, ambulance, fire department, tow companies and state/local plow companies who took the time to help everyone that day. THANK YOU! I want to thank Kirstin Flass and the staff at the Rush Library for all they do to make the library such an inviting place. The fireplace, sitting area, artwork and whimsical “Yarnstorming” pieces are just a few examples.

found! My neighbor and I are disabled and as our neighbors helped each other dig out, they left us snowed in. No emergency personnel could have made it to our house if we needed help. So where were these fine, good Samaritans????

Yes, the ambulance is there for medical purposes and not personal use. The reason for the ambulance to be taken on a “food run” is because if they receive an emergency call, they will immediately have access to the ambulance. If their “own transportation” is used, this will delay the emergency more. That being said, these volunteers have the right to eat a lunch or pick up food, don’t you eat? These volunteers you are complaining about, save lives on a daily basis. Give them a break! I find it funny that on the news the day following the big snow storm (2-1516) they showed how wonderful people are in (local town) helping each other out. Where were people like that in my neighborhood in (local town)? Nowhere to be

Please, if you see a tow truck, police car, fire truck, ambulance, or highway truck with its lights flashing, MOVE OVER or slow down. Give us room to work on the highway. There are too many close calls. Every six days a Tow truck operator is hit or even killed, due to motorists not moving over or slowing down. We are begging you - PLEASE GIVE US ROOM TO WORK. We don’t speed past your office, so don’t speed past ours. We have family, too, that we would like to go home to. (Editor’s note, It’s the law) Just think before you go vote on Election Day. If you’re going to vote for free education (higher taxes) remember this country has had “free education” for many years it’s called the GI bill. Remember everything has a price including FREEDOM. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

It doesn’t matter how many times you fail. It doesn’t matter how many times you almost get it right. No one is going to know or care about your failures, and neither should you. All you have to do is learn from them and those around you because... All that matters in business is that you get it right once. Then everyone can tell you how lucky you are. ~Mark Cuban
