If you or someone you care about is among them, you can now order a personalized, commemorative brick that will be permanently placed along the pathway to the future National Museum of the United States Army. Making a Museum The National Army Museum is rapidly taking shape at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. This national landmark will be the first museum to tell the entire history of the nation’s oldest and largest military service. The massive 185,000-square-foot building will display a collection of Army artifacts, historic documents, and Soldier artwork. The vast majority of these priceless selections have never been seen by the public. “For those who served, the Museum will provide a place of reflection,” said retired Army Chief of Staff, General Gordon R. Sullivan, chairman of the Army Historical Foundation. “For the rest of America, it will be an educational institution that conveys American history through the eyes and stories of Soldiers, teaching our nation how the U.S. Army has shaped nearly every major event in our country’s history.” In the two years since groundbreaking, the building’s frame has been completed, and crews have installed the stainless-steel panels that make up its exterior. Inside, the circular walls of the 300-degree Army Theater are set, and four of the Museum’s largest artifacts are in place. How You Can Be a Part of It The U.S. Army designated the nonprofit Army Historical Foundation to lead the campaign to build the Museum. The Foundation developed the Commemorative Brick Program to raise funds for construction and offer serving Soldiers and Army veterans and their families a way to forever be part of the historic national landmark. The personalized bricks are currently being installed along the pathway leading to the Museum’s main entrance. SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. family came to our aid and a woman from a nearby house. We are so grateful for their assistance. We cannot thank you both enough. It’s wonderful to know there are good, kind people to help where and when you need them! On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I were at the Seneca Park Zoo and were caught in a snow squall while walking to our car. My husband took a tumble, and being seniors, this is always worrisome. He was unable to get up and had a cut on his head. A young man with his “You have voided the title,” she said with a gleam in her eye. By checking the wrong box on the backside of my son’s title, I inadvertently voided the entire document. My fault, but the consequence is a ten day wait on new documentation and $20. Thank you very much, DMV. My husband and I plant pots of annuals to beautify a little piece of highway along the lake along with his extensive gardens that he keeps expanding every year. We planted the pots around Memorial Day and just as they started flourishing around the end of June or early July all four of them disappeared! This is not the first time some pots have been missing, but all four? What a sad state of affairs! I cannot believe that you could bring these to your home, and no GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

People are spotlighting deer and shooting them right from the car. I saw a guy the other day by [local] golf club shoot at a deer right out the window of a little silver car across both lanes of the road in broad daylight! My neighbors have had their tree stands stolen from their private posted property. I have trail cam pics of guys sneaking into my hunting spot during bow season. One had a rifle; the other had a crossbow. One of my trail cameras was stolen. I assume it was them but could not make

to your generosity, the two fireplaces in the building are now working with new gas inserts, making for a cozy reading atmosphere in the library. It takes a village, and we are blessed to have one in Avon! Thank you, Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, for having the most beautiful display of Christmas lights! Seeing the Christmas lights was so special to my handicapped son. We enjoyed them so much and look forward to them again in 2020!

I looked across the road and saw a spotlight going into my horse pasture. The light was coming from a car. He backed up to look more. When he saw me come out, he sped off. Had I not come outside and turned the porch light on, he may have shot my horse. On Wed 11/20/19 around sundown, you killed Stevie, a silly brindle mutt we loved for just over a year. We were sure she’d learn

not to jump up and to stop chasing the cats someday. You also shot Henry, a Husky mix who probably initiated the escape from our fenced-in back yard. After dark, Henry limped home, collapsing in the road. Our kids came screaming. We scooped him up, and the battle to save Henry’s life began. His wounds looked like a gunshot, (through and through) later confirmed by the vet. Yes, 6 children got to see what a deer slug does to a dog and will forever imagine a beloved family pet dying out there, never to be found. Henry died despite our valiant effort. FYI, it’s illegal to shoot a dog, except in self-defense. Somebody knows something. Please call the Sheriff with information on our two dogs shot and killed in [local town].

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

They Call Her “Mama Cindy” – Part Two By Amanda Dudek
M
ama Cindy Strasburg of Hemlock has become well-known serving our troops, sending hundreds of packages and letters to our soldiers abroad each year. What is perhaps not as recognized is all the ways in which Strasburg serves others locally. From Veterans to newborns, she continues to give generously to them and care for them all. “There are just so many avenues,” said Strasburg. “I am always looking for ways to enrich more people.” Strasburg recently donated 100 breakfast meals to Catholic Charities and gave Christmas packages containing breakfast meals, candy, hot pads and ready-to-bake cookies to Noyes for their 100 Lifeline seniors. Strasburg never does anything halfway, either. When she was picking up her granddaughter from school, she overheard a little boy getting on his bus talking to himself, saying, “Okay, okay, okay. I’m starving. I’m starving. I’m starving, but you’re okay. You’ll be okay.” She knew she had to do something. “Children can get free breakfast and lunch at school, but when they go home, they may not have anything to eat there,” explained Strasburg. “So, I adopted four classes, 69 children, and gave each child four presents: a book, gloves, a hat and a stuffed animal. Each child also received a breakfast package with: oatmeal, hot chocolate, candy canes, cookies and candy.” Strasburg also provided a gift for 80 teachers and aids. Each received a crocheted hot pad and a breakfast package like the children that also included tea and coffee to go. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Strasburg has a soft spot in her heart for babies. “I brought a donation to Golisano Children’s Center NICU,” she said. “I crochet blankets and put preemie outfits in them every year.” Strasburg was motivated by her granddaughter who was also a preemie.
Christmas delivered to Chances & Changes for In House and a Family Mama Cindy adopted for Christmas. Christmas coffee mugs and goodie bags were delivered to: ESL, Five Star Bank, Livonia Dollar General and Hemlock Post Office Employees along with friendship bread trays decorated with candy canes. “I also help with the First Steps program at Noyes,” she continued. She provides bundles for babies, makes blankets and burp clothes, crochets blankets and includes a little Christmas stocking for the baby’s first Christmas. “I think every baby should get a new crocheted item,” said Strasburg. “I wrap my items and other donated items in clear wrap and label them, ‘boy,’ or ‘girl,’ so that the hospital is able to hand them to mothers of newborns as a gift. I have been doing this for quite a few years now.” This is the second year Strasburg connected with Chances & Changes, providing gifts for boys and girls as well as breakfast packages, coffee, creamers, candy canes and packaged cookies for the Moms. This year, she adopted a family in need and provided Christmas for them. Mama Cindy says: “There is no cut-off-date when there is a family in need during the holidays!” Even while helping others locally, Strasburg never forgets her Veterans. “I donated 35 Christmas stockings for our in-home Veterans with Meals on Wheels in Mount Morris through the Office of the Aging,” she shared. One Veteran without family called Strasburg to let her know he hadn’t received a present in years. Last year, a 93-year-old Veteran shared with her that hers was only the second stocking he’d received in his life.

Strasburg also adopts all 200 residents of the Canandaigua VA each year. “Each Veteran receives a new pair of socks and a bag of hard candy wrapped in Christmas paper, which are handed out on Christmas morning,” she explained. “I have also been making them neck pillows from flag-patterned, fleece fabric. They love them!” Strasburg also makes Bags of Hope for homeless Veterans through the Canandaigua VA program. “I make the waterproof bags with a shoulder handle, and they contain a fleece blanket, some socks, personal care items, a coffee mug with coffee, food and snacks,” she stated. “Then I sew an embroidered star from a retired flag on it along with this saying: This flag can no longer fly over an American home. The sun and wind have torn and tattered it, but may you carry this star so you know you’re never forgotten.” She has made 52 bags so far. Those seeking help in sending care packages to our troops find that Strasburg is more than willing to help. “A Ladies Auxiliary came to me recently about packages they were going to ship, asking for advice,” she said. “I showed them how things had to be put together and took pictures, so that they could do it on their own. Everything the Ladies Auxiliary donated supplied Christmas for the Marine Unit I just received in Norway: 27 Marines.” In the midst of all this, Cindy Strasburg continues to look for more programs to support. “I don’t want to waste any of the talents the Lord has given me,” she explained. “I am grateful to those who give so generously to make what I do possible. For example, Geneseo Kiwanis has donated $1,000 every year for the past twelve years. This will always be my heart and soul mission to help our homeless veterans, and taking care of our military, for they are going to take care of us. God bless our military!

The survey was designed to probe how feelings of disorganization impact men and women. “People have different levels of tolerance for disorganization in their lives, and what is acceptable for one person may be intolerable for another,” NAPO Executive Director Jennifer Pastore Monroy, CAE observed. “This was particularly true for women.” What The Survey Showed While half of all respondents said that when they feel disorganized, they find it hard to concentrate on current projects, more female respondents reported feeling stressed from feeling out of control of their environment than did men. Specifically: • Thirty-six percent of women said that looking at how organized or disorganized their home is, they feel stressed or completely stressed compared to only 22 percent of men. • More than half of women respondents (53.7 percent) report disorganization leaves them unable to concentrate on the work at hand, vs only 45 percent of men. • 35.5 percent of women vs 22 percent of men wished at some time for someone to come in and organize their home. Monroy’s advice to help streamline one’s environment? “Don’t wait until you feel out of control to tackle the stressors in your life. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 91-year-old male. When I switched primary care physicians, my new doctor shook his head because my previous doctor had never told me about my low GFR readings and being borderline diabetic. In the past I had assumed that if the doctor didn’t mention any low or high blood test results, everything must be OK. I no longer assume: I ask for a copy of the results and question them. The new doctor referred me to a nephrologist. My blood pressure at the time was usually in the 130-140/60-70 range. He told me that for a person of my age, that was too low. He gave me a target of 159/89. Then on my next visit to primary care, I was told that my blood pressure was too high; I was prescribed losartan. I am testing my blood pressure daily, and the past few days it has been in the 170s. So, what is a good target for my blood pressure? Which doctor is correct? -- A.L. ANSWER: There is no absolute right answer to your question. On the one hand, overaggressive treatment of blood pressure in a 91-year-old is unnecessary and may lead to symptoms of lightheadedness, especially upon standing. Other blood pressure drugs may have additional side effects. On the other hand, a 91-year-old has a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, and in someone with a low GFR reading (a measurement of kidney function) and borderline diabetes (which further increases the risk of heart attack and stroke), most experts would aim for a blood pressure goal that is closer to 120-130/80-85, as long as it isn’t causing annoying symptoms. I’m not clear why the doctor wasn’t happy with your usual blood pressure, since a level of 130-140/60s seems very reasonable for a man your age if you aren’t having side effects. If 170 is the usual systolic pressure on your new regimen, I would ask about going back to the old one.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had small breasts. Suddenly, in my mid-70s, my breasts grew, and now at 80 I have outgrown most of my clothes. My doctor said that it is fat, but I have gained only a few pounds. Could this be hormonal? Have you addressed this issue before? -- S.F. ANSWER: I haven’t addressed this before. Breasts change size during a woman’s life for many reasons. Breast tissue is a mixture of fat and glandular tissue. For young women, there’s proportionally more glandular tissue, the amount of which tends to decrease over time. After menopause, the breasts become less glandular; what is lost is replaced by fat, as there is less estrogen. About 20% of women will notice significantly larger breasts after menopause; however, this usually occurs along with overall weight gain. Significant breast enlargement without much weight gain is not common in my experience. Hopefully, your doctor did a thorough examination. However, I think it is very unlikely that your breast size changes represent a tumor. Very rarely, there are estrogen-producing tumors, so if there were other reasons to be concerned, your doctor might check blood levels of hormones, including estrogen.

After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads.
