Democracy Starts with You: Research, Choose, and Vote

As election season approaches, it’s essential for all Americanstoactivelyshapethefuturebyexercising their right to vote. Elections influence everything from healthcare and education to economic policies and civil rights. When we vote, we elect individuals who will make decisions on our behalf, so we must choose wisely. Simply showing up to vote is not enough. Understanding each candidate’s policies, experience, and vision is key to ensuring your vote reflects your values and priorities.

How to Get Started

Identify What Matters to You: Consider the issues most important in your life. Each voter has different priorities, and knowing what you care about most will help you focus your research.

Compare Candidates’ Positions and Proposals: Don’t just listen to others’ commentary on candidates or issues. Do your own research. Check out candidates’ websites, debate transcripts, and media interviews for insights on their platforms. Look for consistency between what they say and what they’ve done in the past.

Consider the Source and Watch for Misinformation: False or misleading claims spread quickly. It’s important to verify information by consulting multiple sources before solidifying your opinion.

Make a Plan

Once you’ve done your research and made your decision, make a plan to vote. Whether you choose to vote early, by mail, or in person on Election Day, planning ahead can help avoid last-minute complications.

In Livingston County, residents from across the county cast early ballots at the Livingston County Board of Elections on Court Street in Geneseo until November 3rd.

A er that, you’ll vote at your town/village’s polling place according to your address. To find your polling place, visit https://voterlookup.elections.ny.gov/, enter your street address, and it will identify which location you should visit on Tuesday.

Gary Nageldinger has been Republican Elections Commissioner of the Livingston County Board of Elections for almost two years. He says, “Expect election day to be busy everywhere in the county, but without the wait times experienced in 2020 with COVID protocols in place.”

Nageldinger says, “ e Livingston County Board of Elections has been working for over a year to ensure this election runs smoothly across Livingston County. We have met with the FBI, Homeland Security, and numerous other Federal, State, and local authorities to prepare for election season. We have put new equipment in place across the county to make the voter experience more efficient along with an improved election results page on our website. Our hope is that as residents vote on election day, these improvements are evident across the county.”

For more information on election information, visit www.vote411.org.

Your Vote Matters

Some Americans feel their single vote doesn’t matter, especially in national elections under the Electoral College system. However, history shows that even local elections are decided by narrow margins, and your vote can elevate local leaders who may rise to state or national prominence, amplifying its impact.

Voting is more than a right... it’s a responsibility. Democracy thrives when citizens are informed and engaged. By voting, you help ensure leaders truly represent the people. We don’t have to agree on everything, but it’s essential to do your own research. Plan ahead, research candidates and proposals, and on November 5th, Vote.

Chicken BBQ

Dog clean up

Our little hamlet is such a special place to live. Our volunteer firemen and women recently got up very early to make HUNDREDS of chicken for the annual chicken BBQ. What a wonderful meal it was and we so appreciated and enjoyed the work these people did.

Church Sale

Please, it is not that hard to pick up after your dog goes potty! So many people just leave it. Children play in parks, people walk on trails and paths and other dogs should have the right to enjoy the outdoors as well. Don’t leave your dog’s mess for someone else to clean up or for it to cause issues. Be respectful and responsible. You chose to get a dog and cleaning up after them goes right along with having them; it’s not that hard.

Inexperienced or rushed construction worker

I saw the [local church] ad in your Penny Saver and was glad they put it in there because I went to it and let me tell you, the sale was the best The ladies had everything so well organized and each item was priced and so very neat and they only had clean, workable items and clothes. And the price for the items were a steal!! I can't thank the ladies enough for the time and effort they all did to make this sale so enjoyable and just so perfect. I can't wait for next year's sale!

Saw construction ahead so took an alternative route through a nearby neighborhood to stay out of the construction workers’ way and avoid delays. Came up to a large loader which was fine because he was in his own lane, with no other cars or obstacles on that stretch of road. Stayed in my lane, even hugging the right side to give plenty of room. As we passed each other going opposite directions towards each other, a golf cart ATV behind him came whipping out in reverse, almost all the way over into my lane just to turn the thing around. I made sure to stay in my lane the whole time (about 25 mph, not 50) and we might have come within a few feet of each other as he popped out because he was whipping almost all the way over into my lane with little warning/reason though there were no cones or flagman or anything like that so he should have looked first before whipping out so fast and so far or turn tighter because those things have a tighter turning radius than that or do a 3pt turn. But he yelled at me.

RV BUYERS’ GUIDE

Usage frequency: When considering an RV, think about how often it will be used and where it will be stored when not in use. Garage storage may be challenging on a larger rig, and some housing communities frown upon parking RVs in driveways. This may affect the size you choose as well as the features you need, according to KOA, the RV camp site leader.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD

(NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars.

“The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern.

One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times.

Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day.

SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE

Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.

When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur.

In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy.

Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections.

Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe.

Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about suntanning. First off, I want to say that I get yearly skin cancer checks, love the sun, and hardly ever use suntan lotion. I monitor my time outside, so as not to get a sunburn. I see warnings about certain days being high ultraviolet (UV) days. Are they talking about UVA or UVB, and which one gives you a tan? -- S.K.

ANSWER: You’re not going to like my answer, because all types of UV light exposure, whether they lead to a sunburn or suntan, cause damage to the skin and lead to an increased risk of skin cancer. A tan from sunlight leads to a small degree of protection against further UV light damage, but there is still ongoing skin damage with UV light exposure. Even people with very dark skin are susceptible to skin cancer, although their risk is a lot less than others. UVA light is more constant throughout the year and penetrates deeper into the skin. UVB light is stronger near the equator, at higher altitudes, and closer to the summer solstice. The UV index reported by the National Weather Service considers both UVA and UVB light in its calculations, as well as the time of year, altitude, and cloud cover.

Both UVA and UVB light cause the skin to tan, but tanning from UVA light alone (for example, in a tanning machine) doesn’t provide any protection from the sun. So, while I am at least glad that you aren’t exposing yourself enough to get burned, I don’t agree with being out in the sun to get tanned.

I do recommend the liberal use of a sunscreen with protection against both UVA and UVB. It needs to be used in a large-enough quantity to provide protection -- approximately an ounce for an average-sized body, plus another teaspoon for the face and neck. I recommend a high-SPF sunscreen (30 or more). I buy mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for myself and my family. Finally, sunscreen needs to be reapplied regularly, especially when exercising or swimming.

Staying out of the sun, wearing sun-protective clothing, and wearing sunscreen will not only help you avoid cancer, but also help you avoid problems that I see in my older patients, who did what you did when they were young. Now they have thinned skin that bleeds easily, as well as “age spots” and other signs of skin damage from the sun, including wrinkles.

PREPARE NOW FOR ELECTION DAY

Elections decide the leadership that guides legislation and enforcement of regulations. The right to vote is something many people take for granted, but elsewhere in the world many people have no say with regard to their political leaders, which only emphasizes the importance of participating in the election process whenever you’re afforded the opportunityto do so.

Thefirststeptopreparefor Election Day is to confirm your eligibility. Age,legalresidencyandcitizenship status are just a few of the factors that may affect your eligibility to vote. County clerks, municipal offices as well as the Division of Motor Vehicles should have voter registration forms, and additional informationisavailableonline.

Voterregistrationmayhavetobefiled severalweekstoamonthinadvance of Election Day in order for you to be eligible. In the United States, when voter eligibility is in question at the time of an election,a person typically may cast a provisional vote, which will then be considered after other ballotsarecounted.

Onceyoureligibilityhasbeenverified, it is important to know the dates of key elections. Local newspapers often print schedules and this information can be found online as well. Various local and federal elections occur each year, and November is when national elections takeplaceintheUnitedStates.

Before voting, voters should research the respective candidates for each election. To better understand candidates’ platforms, visit their websites as well as those of nonpartisan political organizations, such as The League of Women Voters. Deciding who to vote for requires more than just siding with a particular political party. Read as much as you can on the candidates’ beliefs, concerns and voter history. This will help you make the best decision possible.

In the days leading up to Election Day, confirm your polling location and voting options. USA.gov advises that if you need special assistance, contact your local elections office for information, advice, and educational materials about voting equipment and details on access to the polling place, including designated parking.

Keep in mind that, in addition to voting for candidates, you may asked to answer additional questions about issues impacting your local community. These are called ballot measures. A voter guide also may include information about certain issues that will require your vote.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE

Choose the right date and time

Plan when to hold the sale by looking at the calendar and choosing an open weekend. Many people host their yard sales on Friday, Saturday or Sunday mornings, theorizing that this is when the most people will be free to browse their wares.

Begin early in the morning so that shoppers will not need to disrupt their schedules much to visit neighborhood sales. A 7 a.m. start time will attract the early birds and free up most of the day.

TIPS TO FIND THE RIGHT LAWYER

Contact your local bar association. According to the ABA®, bar associations in most communities will make referrals according to specific areas of law. This can ensure people without much or any experience hiring lawyers find one with the right experience and practice concentration. Local referral services also may help, and the ABA® notes that many, though not all, have competency requirements for lawyers who wish to be referred. When speaking with a referral service, ask if they have such requirements in place and how frequently they reevaluate lawyers they refer.

November 2 , 2024

The ancient indigenous people of Mexico have practiced rituals celebrating the lives of past ancestors for around 3,000 years. The celebration that is now known as the Day of the Dead originally landed on the ninth month of the Aztec calendar and was observed for the entire month. In the 20th century, the month long festivities were condensed to three days called The Days of the Dead: Halloween on October 31, Day of the Innocents on November 1, and Day of the Dead on November 2.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

PAW’S CORNER

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS HALLOWEEN

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you remind your readers that Halloween can present many dangers to pets? ank you. -- Clara in Atlanta

DEAR CLARA: You’re absolutely right! While it can be lots of fun to celebrate Halloween with your pet, owners need to protect them from risks that can endanger them during the fun.

If you’re having a Halloween party, consider sending your pet to a friend or family member for the evening or give them a safe place to hang out while the guests are there -- like your bedroom or a back room. Make sure they have a comfy bed or blanket, water and toys. You can bring a pet out to meet the party guests if they are well socialized and calm in group settings. Once your dog or cat (or rabbit or bird or iguana) has said hello to everyone, take them back to their safe room.

Costumes on pets are so much fun, but be sure that the costume isn’t constrictive and that wearing it doesn’t cause them anxiety. A few minutes at a time is recommended -- enough time to get some cute photos for your Instagram.

Keep all candies, cookies and sweet treats out of reach of your pets. Chocolate is especially dangerous for dogs. Likewise, if you have party snacks out, keep them up high. Avocado, onions and grapes are also dangerous foods for dogs and cats.

If you’re trick-or-treating with your pet, keep them on a leash at all times. at includes cats! It’s dark, the streets are unfamiliar and there are lots of strange characters walking around. Your pet can get scared and run off.

With advance preparation, you can have a safe, fun and happy Halloween!

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST

(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.

Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.

Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.

In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. To learn more, go to Fire Prevention at www.gobrick.com.

Here’s A Tip

* If you run out of buttermilk, you can use an equal amount of yogurt, preferably nonsweetened, plain, but you can adjust the sugar in a recipe slightly if your yogurt is favorably flavored.

* When entertaining, keep cold drinks in a cooler away from the kitchen. is keeps the floor space free for the cooks.

* So en brown sugar quickly by grating it on a fine hand grater. If you have a bit more time, add an apple to the container and seal tightly.

* “Day-old bread makes excellent handmade croutons. Slice, spray with cooking spray and season with whatever spices on hand sound good. Toast in a 300 degree oven for 10 minutes or so. ey are especially good with soups.” -- S.S.D. in Maryland

LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50

(NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie:

1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love.

2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you.

3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways.

4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences.

5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you.

6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living!

In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter.

“’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.”

To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.

HEAP

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Start with your windows. The windows in a home can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their heating and cooling costs. On cold days, pull back curtains so the natural sunlight can come in and warm the house, reducing the need to turn up the temperature on the thermostat. When the weather outside is especially warm, hang blackout curtains to prevent the hot sun from warming rooms and increasing the need for air conditioning. In addition, address any leaks around windows to ensure hot and cold air is not escaping and contributing to excessive energy consumption.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE

Plumbing

Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage.

Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers.

The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes. By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

You are thinking of making a major renovation to your home. Perhaps it’s time to create that master bedroom suite you long have admired or install that wrap-around porch? What is the first thing that should be done before getting down to business?

The correct way to begin a home remodeling project is to obtain the necessary permits for the job. Many municipalities request individuals obtain permits for a range of work on homes or other structures, such as office buildings. Permits are generally required for all new construction as well as specific modifications that will affect structural, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems. It’s important to check with the local building office prior to beginning work to see which permits you will need beforetheprojectcanbegin.Permitsarenecessarywhetherahomeowner is doing the work or hiring an outside contractor.

Duetothecostandtimeinvolvedwithsecuringpermits, somehomeowners skip this step so they can begin a project promptly. However, this can end up being a costly mistake. Permits might seem like a nuisance, but they actually protect homeowners in various ways.

UNIQUE LOCATIONS TO HOST A WEDDING

Rooftop venues: Few backdrops inspire the awe of city skylines, especially when couples wait to get hitched until night has fallen and buildings have lit up. Rooftop restaurants and bars have undergone a resurgence in recent years, and these facilities are tailor-made for city-dwelling couples who want an enviable backdrop for their nuptials. Many such establishments are even affiliated with hotels, which can simplify wedding planning.
