SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

Light Hill / Canandaigua Comfort Care Home opened nearly six months ago to care for our residents at their end-oflife. Prior to that, there were months of renovations at the hands of several extremely talented and skilled volunteer craftsmen. The home’s operation is only possible because of our incredible family of volunteers. They have come for different reasons from different backgrounds, willing to care for our residents with a caring heart. NOVEMBER is NATIONAL HOSPICE & PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH, the ideal time to express our deep gratitude for the love, care and compassion with which they fill our homes every day. In addition, there are many more who keep our place running just like any other home. Every day at Light

Hill is brighter because of our volunteers, the heart of our home.
From the man in the red truck and his dog Skipper: I’ve been taking my dog Skipper for rides in my truck for many years now. He looks forward to it and enjoys it! I’m sure it bothers many people, for he is barking all along the way. It was so encouraging and kind of the neighbors on Chick Rd. to write up a positive comment. Thank you for seeing the bright side of our story!
Wouldn’t it be nice at this time of THANKS GIVING…That we remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to have loving people and warm surroundings to our table of blessings. Perhaps instead of acrimonious debate, we could bring warm thoughts and good conversation to our table of gratitude. May it be so… Namaste… Randy Pawley
Article 22, Section 601 of the NY Agriculture and Markets Law: Leaving the scene of injury to certain animals without reporting. Any person operating a motor vehicle which shall strike and injure any horse, dog, cat or animal classified as cattle shall stop and endeavor to locate the owner or custodian of such animal or a police, peace or judicial officer of the vicinity, and take any other reasonable and appropriate action so that the animal may have necessary attention, and shall also promptly report the matter to such owner, custodian or officer (or if no one of such has been located, then to a police officer of some other nearby community). The remainder of S601 & S602 should be read by all-- covers the fines and being arrested for failure to comply. NO LAW TO KEEP CATS INSIDE.
It was great to see the Homecoming Parade. As I have done for SO many years, I took a plastic bag with me. This was PARTIALLY to collect the candies and gifts thrown by the participants. But after the parade is over, it is ALWAYS the same ~ I backtrack and go along the route to the beginning of the parade picking up the wrappers left behind by the litterbugs. It would be SO nice if one year, I went along, and found NO WRAPPERS left behind. I am sure the residents along the route would agree! As for the candy that is missed, think about this: I am sure the residents along the route appreciate the ants that the missed candy brings. PLEASE look around to be sure you haven’t missed any candy! You can ALWAYS donate what you don’t want. PLEASE also look around to see if you can pick up wrappers!

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

Unique Ways To Shop Locally Forgo a traditional vacation. If you’re used to taking an annual trip to a Caribbean island or another faraw ay locale, forgo that trip this year and take a more local vacation instead. A local vacation can be similar to a staycation, w hen you simply stay home, but spend some nights out on the tow n in your local community. Go out to eat, take in a concert or theater performance at a nearby theater or take the kids out for miniature golf. For those w ho feel the need to get aw ay from home, consider a local bed and breakfast or another relaxing locale that’s close to home. You w ill still get the feel of a traditional vacation, but you w on’t spend as much and you’ll be doing your part to help the local economy.

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.
• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you.

Did You Know? Cardiac arrest, is the abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. Though often mistaken as the same thing as a heart attack, cardiac arrest is not the same. Heart attacks can cause cardiac arrest and even lead to death, but the cause of heart attack and cardiac arrest are different.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. SMART WAYS TO BUDGET FOR HOLIDAY GIFTING Look at spending from last year. The first step to establishing a budget is to review spending from last year. See how much you allotted to each person and how much you actually ended up spending on those people. Did you go over or under? Think about the other ways you spent money, including on decorations, entertaining, etc. Once you have a clear picture of how you spent your money last year, you can start building a budget for this year.

HOW TO MANAGE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TRIPS WITH TOTS IN TOW Break up shopping excursions with a meal. Kids enjoy dining out, even if their preferences lean more toward chicken fingers than steak au poivre. By breaking up shopping excursions with meals out on the town, parents can give kids something to look forward to at the onset of the shopping day. Such a break also gives everyone, moms and dads included, a chance to get off their feet and catch their breath. When the meal is over, promise kids a trip to get some ice cream or hot chocolate at the end of the day so they once again have something to look forward to.

Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
