Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time.

Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi, my name is Mya Rose. I am a Toy Yorkiepoo who is active and fun loving. I love retrieving my toys and playing tug-a-war with my family. At only 7.5 lbs, I try to be fierce and brave to secure the premises, but will quickly roll over for a good belly rub. My favorite places to enjoy are being cuddled by my adopted friend, Naomi, in her wheelchair; laying beside my big, cockapoo brother, Reese; or curled up and snuggled beside my adopted mom or dad. By the way, I hate bows in my hair!

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try to say as little as possible about the work you’re doing through the end of the month. Then you can make your announcement and accept your welldeserved plaudits. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You face a more difficult challenge than you expected. But with that strong Taurean determination, you should be able to deal with it successfully by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Before you act on your “feelings” about that upcoming decision, it might be wise to do a little fact-checking first. You could be very much surprised by what you don’t find. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A recent workplace success can open some doors that were previously closed to you. On a personal level, expect to receive some important news from a longtime friend and colleague. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Put your wounded pride aside and do what you must to heal that misunderstanding before it takes a potentially irreversible turn and leaves you regretting the loss of a good friend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) One way to kick a less-than-active social life into high gear or rebuild an outdated contacts list is to throw one of your well-organized get-togethers for friends and associates. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting out of an obligation you didn’t really want to take on can be tricky. An honest explanation of the circumstances can help. Next time, pay more attention to your usually keen instincts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Use your Scorpion logic to push for a no-nonsense approach to a perplexing situation. This could help keep present and potential problems from creating more confusion. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A friend’s problem might take more time than you want to give. But staying with it once again proves the depth of your Sagittarian friendship and loyalty. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat can benefit from an extra dose of self-confidence to unsettle your detractors, giving you the advantage of putting on a strong presentation of your position. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You might want to ask a friend or relative for advice on an ongoing personal matter. But be careful not to give away information you might later wish you had kept secret. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the weekend for a creativity break to help restore your spiritual energy. Once that’s done, you’ll be back and more than ready to tackle whatever challenge you need to face. BORN THIS WEEK: You get great joy out of creating beautiful things and sharing them with others who appreciate them. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

To the person who vented about a medical scooter in the road: while the sidewalks may have been plowed, they are also very badly uneven. Cracks, whether from wear or roots can stop mobility equipment abruptly, sending the user over the handlebars.
Often, ramps to get onto and off the sidewalk also have tall lips. People on a fixed income, such as the disabled often are, may not be able to afford reflective vests and lights. Rather than demanding the disabled stay home, why don’t you contact the town for better maintenance and lighting for the sidewalks, and perhaps keep reflective items in your car to give to a disabled person who does not have them? To the person who stole my package the week before Christmas: I waited weeks for that package to arrive with gifts for my loved ones. Because of you I wasn’t prepared for my aunt’s
Christmas party. Karma will catch up with you! I work at a home for homeless veterans in a canal town. I have a 79-year-old veteran who walks up to 12 miles daily. That is not bad for a 79-yearold Vietnam veteran. A local lady walking her dog told this vet he couldn’t walk down her street, near her or even in her area. How could you be so arrogant and unwelcoming to a veteran in your community? This man not only served his country in a bad era but now is told that he is not welcome to walk down your street, as well. Who are you to tell him that? This man is healthy and loves your community, yet this is how you treat your fellow
neighbor? A Veteran? Thank God the community for the most part has been absolutely wonderful to our house because you left a poor impression on his and our staff ’s minds. Thank God the rest of the world isn’t as heartless. It’s so disconcerting to see Christmas trees on the side of the curb within walking distance of a local park where they recycle them for free. Please check your town’s website. There is so little space left in the landfills. My town uses the chips to put on their trails. Some will give you the mulch. At least take off the tinsel and lights so they don’t get put in the landfill with the trees.
Brighter Side Thank you, East Rochester PD! Sunday night, I had to go in to work by 8. I was outside by 6:15 knowing it would be outrageous out. I drive a little Mazda. I managed to bulldoze (in reverse) to the street. However since the sidewalks had been plowed, I got stuck on the packed snow. I saw a police officer exit his SUV and approach. Without hesitation, this man (also without gloves) helped me free my car by giving it a push back in my driveway then taking his steel shovel to break up the packed ice and snow. He had no cause to stop and help but chose to, and it saved me an incredible struggle. Thank you, Officer Bryant Ferry! R.C.
Our Pittsford Seniors program participants collected 100 coats during Monroe County’s “Coats for Seniors” campaign this past December. The coats are sent to area shelters where they are distributed to those in need. Thanks to partnerships with several community groups and organizations - including our seniors! - the Coats for Seniors Campaign has collected and distributed over 10,000 coats during its 15-year history. Love thy neighbors: Many thanks to my “snow removal elves!” My driveway has been cleared every storm, thanks to my caring neighbors and
daughter. Much appreciation to Kati, Rod, Vicky, Steve & April. Their Luck Lady – Kitty It is hard enough to lose a pet. The event is made even more difficult when the decision as to whether or not to euthanize falls on the shoulders of the pet owner. Dr. Carrie DiCarlo at Perry Pet, along with all her staff, should be recognized for their sympathetic and respectful attitudes towards both their patients and their owners, especially at such an emotional time of loss. My family also received written condolences from Roger’s Hair Salon, where another wonderful group of compassionate people work. We are blessed to have such truly caring and compassionate
people in our community. So many people go to work and just “go through the motions.” The people at these two local businesses put their hearts into their work; it is truly appreciated!

Your
Protecting Your Vision From Diabetes (NAPSI)—Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined—and can cause serious problems throughout the body. According to the National Eye Institute, eye health, for example, can become critically compromised. Around 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, are living with diabetes, with about 1.5 million more being diagnosed every year. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater his or her chances are of developing diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the blood vessels in the retina. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy. While being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle are certainly linked to diabetes, social and environmental factors such as poverty, stress, and lack of safe housing and access to a healthy diet can also compromise your health and ultimately contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, addressing these social determinants of health has become a top priority for Medicaid programs. “We encourage our members with diabetes to have regular eye exams to rule out complications,” said Dr. Andrea Gelzer, senior vice president of medical affairs at AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need. “We educate our members so they understand that living a healthy lifestyle, controlling their blood sugar and having regular eye exams can help save their vision.” Simple steps can help mitigate the effects of diabetes and may potentially delay complications from diabetic eye disease, including controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, monitoring your cholesterol, seeing your doctor regularly, and having a dilated eye exam at least once per year—or more if recommended by your eye care professional. AmeriHealth Caritas is part of the Independence Health Group in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of the nation’s leaders in health care solutions for those most in need. HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Give the body time to recover. Whether it’s more time between sets of repetitions or an extra day off between workouts, a fatigued body might just need more time to rest and recover. Aging men and women must recognize that they might not be capable of pushing themselves as hard as they once did and should adjust their workouts accordingly.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 63-year-old man. A visit to my urologist did not answer some questions I have. I was told by my regular doctor that aging is a factor in men losing leg hair. Is that true? I am losing pubic hair, and even hair up to the navel. Why is that? Years ago, I found that I had lost the hair between my legs. A medication I was prescribed (Lexapro/Celexa) had bad side effects for me. It caused sexual problems and the loss of perineum hair. Could there be a connection? It is funny that I have only slight chest hair reduction and little back hair loss. Maybe the urologist brushed me off, but it is important to me. I had been under a lot of stress during the summer. -- T.K. ANSWER: When I see leg hair being lost, the first thing I worry about is the circulation in the legs. This can be an early sign of peripheral vascular disease, which is important to recognize because it is treatable and also predicts greater risk of heart attack and stroke. If you have any risk factors for vascular disease, I would talk to your doctor about getting this tested, which is easy and noninvasive. However, the loss of pubic hair makes me concerned about a drop in testosterone. This can cause sexual troubles as well, but it sounds like your sexual issues were related to the medication, which is not uncommon with both Lexapro and Celexa. That’s a simple blood test. Severe stress can rarely cause loss of all body hair, alopecia universalis, but that is really ALL hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes, which is not what you have.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old female, and I bruise from the slightest tap on my skin. My skin is very thin. When you press too hard on my arm or leg, it hurts. I have seen vascular specialists, but I have been told it is because of my thin skin. I feel like I should live in a bubble. My doctor says the same thing as the specialists. Do you have any suggestions to make my veins stronger? I am taking vitamin C, as I read that this might help. -- J.C. ANSWER: Easy bruising is a common problem in the elderly, and although it sometimes is an indication of serious disease, most of the time it is benign. I begin to worry when I see bleeding from the gums or nose, with multiple large bruises with no trauma, or in people with a family history of bleeding. Some simple laboratory tests can help decide whether this is likely a sign of internal disease. In the majority of cases, with none of the worry signs above, people can be reassured. Vitamin C and vitamin K deficiency can cause easy bruising, so foods high in these nutrients or a supplement can be tried. I recommend getting these through food rather than supplements, if possible. A few years ago, a study showed that a bioflavonoid supplement helped with easy bruising, and most pharmacies and health-food stores carry bioflavonoid supplements if diet is inadequate. Many fruits and vegetables are high in these compounds, especially citrus fruits, legumes, hot peppers and onions. These certainly can’t hurt, and may help. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.

It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

Generation Two: Bridging the Gap By Amanda Dudek
A Generation Two volunteer smiles with her student friend.
L
ike so many of us in today’s fast-paced society, young children need time, including time to play and time with nurturing and supportive adults. Generation Two (G2) works within elementary schools to provide this much needed playtime and adult connection to children. “Many of our adult volunteers are retired, and developing friendships with these children brings a lot of joy into their lives,” said G2 Coordinator Jenny Giessler. G2 volunteers include college students, professionals, police officers, and many others. For the children, the benefits of the relationships created through play are often long-lasting. The G2 Program started in Fairport in 2002. Once a week, Kindergarten children-and in some schools 1st and even 2nd grade children---have the undivided attention of an adult for 30 minutes. During this time, children are encouraged to do what they do best: play. “Children have been learning through play across cultures from the beginning of time,” said Giessler. “It’s their work. It is natural for them and how they learn best.” Giessler explains that there are no specific expectations placed on the children during this time. Rather, each child’s adult volunteer spends time engaged in one-on-one play with them. “We set a third of classroom aside for playtime at a time,” said Giessler. “Our group of children and volunteers is supervised at all times and redirected as needed.” G2 coordinators bring in suitcases of items that support all different styles of play: social play, creative play, constructive play, providing kids with items they may not otherwise have access to. “Children are learning about counting and shapes and colors through toys and games,” explained Giessler. “Supporting their learning in ways that are natural for them. Although it is difficult to quantify a program like G2, a study was done 10 years ago by Richard Ryan, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, University of Rochester; Neta Weinstein, Ph.D., University of Rochester; Inger Williams, Ph.D., G2 Consultant. This study indicated that the children who participated in G2 liked themselves, school and their teachers more than children who did not have a supportive G2 friend. They also had fewer disciplinary referrals. All children in a class participate in G2, and while there are no requirements placed on the children, this cannot be said for the volunteers. “Volunteers are interviewed and screened and, as a precaution, are never left alone with the children,” explained Giessler. “Full training and ongoing support are provided. There are 4 in-service education programs during the year that address various topics on education, child development, empathy and active listening. Many also attend the yearly G2 conference held each fall at Nazareth College. Volunteers commit to donating two hours a week to the G2 Program. Each volunteer meets with three students, each for a half an hour. Volunteers keep a journal of their time with each student. The final half hour is a volunteer only period during which the program coordinator leads discussion time. These journals, discussions and reflections have proved invaluable. “We are teaching our volunteers to be child advocates,” stated
Giessler. “We cover small and large topics and concerns, including social and emotional play and teaching students how to treat others.” Giessler explains that students behave differently when they are playing than when they are in the classroom, and recognizing their various behaviors is important. “Our volunteers’ journals can become very valuable for helping these children and families, especially over time as a volunteer can continue to support a child through the G2 program in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade,” added Giessler. Very often, she explained, the supportive relationships these children and their adult volunteer friends develop extend beyond the G2 program, as well. “Our volunteers often also begin to attend school events such as plays, musicals, sports, field trips. Sometimes, they even help with tutoring,” said Giessler. “Kids in the higher grades still recognize them and come up and give them a hug.” Of course, kids aren’t the only ones benefiting. “Some volunteers say that this has made them better grandparents and retaught them how to play,” added Giessler. “Many of them are retired, and adding to the welfare of these kids provides them with a new sense of purpose. Some are also recently widowed and are lonely. G2 enables them to develop friendships with the other volunteers and these children. For some, G2 has also filled the void of absent or distant family.” This year was G2’s pilot year with East Rochester Central Schools. They are working with Principal Marisa Philp and Teacher Mindy Caron in one Kindergarten class. G2 hopes this will lead to all Kindergarten classes and ultimately to grades K-2 in East Rochester. “Our goal as we expand is to maintain a consistently high-quality program,” said Giessler. The G2 program is currently active in all kindergarten classes at Jefferson Avenue which is a Fairport School, Rochester City Schools #106 (Kindergarten), #45 (K & 1st), and #3 (K, 1st & 2nd). This year over 525 students and 160 volunteers are involved in G2. Giessler added, “We would like to expand within the schools in which we are already to include all classes K-2 as well as expand to additional schools and districts as funding and opportunities allow.” For more information and to volunteer, please visit www.g2rochester.org. Snowy Thoughts By Rita Lambert In winter when the snowflakes fall and spread a blanket over all our feathered friends fly all around and find no food upon the ground. I’m sure they’re pleased with all the folk that know that hunger is no joke, those faithful ones that meet their needs with suet tied upon their trees and feeders filled with seedy treats. How do they thank them for these eats? The joy to see their colors bright eating away with such delight is all the thanks they really need for doing this most gracious deed.

Gasoline Attendant
Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.
