charitable organizations survive primarily on donations. Without the financial contributions of donors, many charitable organizations and nonprofits would be incapable of meeting their missions. Donors may make charitable contributions to help others, but there’snoshameintakingadvantageof thetaxbenefitsassociated with donating. Laws governing the tax benefits associated with charitable donations can vary from year to year, so it’s best that donors stay on top of the rules, particularly if they plan to prepare their own returns in April. Charitable individuals can keep these strategies on maximizing the tax benefits of donations in mind as they prepare to support their favorite charities.

Work with a financial planner. As noted, the tax laws governing charitable donations can change from year to year, and some of those changes may be subtle. That’s why it can benefit donors to hire a seasoned financial planner, ideally before making donations. Financial professionals can advise prospective donors about donation strategies that will earn them the most significant tax deductions. Some donations help donors avoid capital gains taxes, while others may not even qualify for deductions. Making sense of the rules is easier when donors work with licensed, experienced financial professionals.

Keep digital records and receipts. Even if a donation qualifies for a deduction, taxpayers can only claim it if they keep records of their contributions. Organizations on the receiving end of donors’ generosity may provide proof to donors who lost their original receipts, but that process can take time, particularly if taxpayers wait until April to prepare their returns. When donating to charity, request digital receipts of all contributions, as these are harder to lose and easily accessible come tax prep season.

Donors may not give to charity with tax deductions in mind, but there’s no shame in maximizing the tax benefits.

Donald H. Stinson Donald H. Stinson

CORNING, NY: Donald H. Stinson passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on April 3, 1946, in the Town of Urbana, New York, he was the son of Glen and Mary (Shader) Stinson. He departed from this world in Corning, New York, leaving behind a legacy of love and craftsmanship that will be remembered by all who knew him.

Donald’s early life in Urbana was the foundation upon which he built his character and work ethic. After graduating from high school, he dedicated many years of service to Foster Wheeler and Polly-O Dairy, where his diligence and commitment to excellence were evident to his colleagues and supervisors. His work was not just a means to an end; it was a reflection of his dedication to providing for his beloved family.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sue Stinson, with whom he shared a life full of adventure and compassion; sons, Eric Stinson and Jim Joseph; daughters, Trisha (Doug) Everett, Denise (Tom) Stewart, and Tammi (Howard) Best; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Donald’s interests and hobbies were as diverse as they were engaging. A masterful woodworker, he crafted countless birdhouses, frames, and pens, each piece a work of art that showcased his attention to detail and love for nature. His creativity was not only expressed through his woodworking but also in his and Sue’s shared passion for volunteering. Together, they constructed wildlife refuges across the country, dedicating most of their time in Arizona, contributing to the preservation of natural habitats for future generations to enjoy.

As we say goodbye to Donald H. Stinson, we celebrate a life well-lived. We remember a man who laughed often, loved deeply, and left the world a better place through his actions and creations. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, as we reflect on the joy he brought to our lives and the beauty he added to the world. Donald’s journey through life was one of purpose and passion, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Celebration of his life will be held in the summer, and his arrangements are entrusted to Fagan’s Funeral Home of Bath.

FINDING HELP FOR ADDICTION

Speak with a doctor. It may be intimidating to admit you need help, and if you don’t feel comfortable speaking with family, you can consult your doctor. A doctor is required to keep anything you say to him or her confidential.A doctor may refer you to substance abuse professionals or prescribe medications that could make it easier to stop using a substance and ease withdrawal symptoms. If drugs or alcohol are being used to self-medicate, a doctor also may suggest safer alternatives that can treat issues that alcohol or drugs may be masking.

WHAT YOUNG ATHLETES CAN DO TO REDUCE INJURY RISK

Getasportsphysical. Most programs mandate an updated sports physical examination. This pre-participation physical allows for the screening, prevention and treatment of any conditions that can affect play and contribute to injury.

What to know about hospice at home e philosophy behind hospice is that people should be able to live as fully and as comfortably as possible through the last days of their lives, surrounded by loved ones and friends. Hospice treats the symptoms of illness rather than trying to be curative. Hospice also does not try to postpone nor accelerate death. e American Cancer Society says hospice care is offered by a team of professionals who work together to manage distress, symptoms and spiritual issues. Services also are offered to family members, including access to counselors and bereavement experts. Hospice workers help family members make decisions and plan care. Hospice is a form of care, rather than a place. Saying a person is going into hospice means he or she will begin to receive this type of palliative care. While hospice can take place in a center that only offers this type of service, a hospice team can work in a variety of settings, including one’s home.

Many people receive hospice care at home. VNS Health provides care in spaces patients call home and says that hospice care can include administration of medications, arrangement of equipment (like beds and oxygen) and visits from a hospice care team. A hospice team may include nurses, social workers, physicians, therapists, and even clergy who come to the home to offer support and care.

Home hospice care begins with a team member visiting with a terminally ill person and his or her family. During a visit, needs will be addressed and the hospice team can arrange for desired services.

Members of the hospice staff will visit regularly to check up and make sure that any symptoms are under control.

Families are urged to do their homework to find the best program for their needs.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Isn’t Recommended Based On Potential Harm

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m interested in consuming dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). I’ve read that it will destroy the root of cancer and hasten the healing of broken bones, ligaments and strained muscles. My question is whether it is OK to consume the suggested amount of DMSO? My aortic valve was replaced with a mechanical valve three years ago. After 12 months of followup exams, I was informed that the valve had sealed perfectly and was told to enjoy life.

PUBLIC HEARING

ANSWER: DMSO is indicated by the Food andDrugAdministrationforthesymptomatic relief of interstitial cystitis, a chronic and painful bladder condition. It is instilled directly in the bladder and is sometimes used for other urinary conditions, although there is no evidence of its usefulness. DMSO is often used topically for musculoskeletal injuries, and some people do note pain relief. Numerous studies on rheumatological conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis) failed to show a benefit, although a study from Germany in 1995 showed that DMSO gel with a 25% concentration reduced pain when applied to joints.Otherstudieswereunabletoconfirmthis. For cancer, there are no convincing studies that show benefit, and some studies have shown an increase in breast cancer cell growth with DMSO. Based on studies showingminimalbenefitandpotentialharm, I don’t recommend the use of DMSO.What’s moreimportantisthatthestudieshavebeen done with medical-grade DMSO, which is only available with a prescription. When you buy DMSO at a hardware store, you are getting industrial-grade DMSO, which is potentially contaminated with industrial toxins and isn’t intended for human use.

In addition, DMSO is very good at bringing other substances with it into the skin. This is useful as a drug-delivery system but dangerous when the DMSO you use is contaminated with chemicals or if you get thosechemicalsonyourskin.WhileIcanfind DMSO for sale that companies purport to be very pure, you are relying on the company that may or may not have purified it, as it isn’tindependentlytested. However,Idonot thinkthatthetopicaluseof DMSOislikelyto be a danger to your prosthetic heart valve.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, at an event sponsored by our community, an expert on the gut microbiome gave a lecture on how to keep it in balance. While the lecture was generally informative and useful, at one point, he stated that vaccines were detrimental to the microbiome. Is there any evidence (other than anecdotal) that supports such an opinion? -- W.G.

Level: Advanced

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ANSWER: The huge number of bacteria in our gastrointestinal tract is referred to as the microbiome, and our microbiome can have effects on many aspects of our functioning. How much of an effect it has is debated. COVID-19 infections were known to have a marked detrimental effect on the microbiome, but the effect of vaccination on the microbiome was not well-studied until quite recently. A 2024 study from the University of Cambridge found that the microbiome was only minimally affected by vaccination. Based on this recent study, I disagree with your community speaker and conclude that if you’re concerned about your microbiome, you’d be much better off getting vaccinated and taking other steps to prevent infection.

THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE

Get vitamin D: The body naturally produces vitamin D from sun exposure. The National Institutes of Health says it is optimal to have sun exposure for five to 30 minutes a day, most days a week, to absorb UVB rays and effectively make vitamin D. Vitamin D is a nutrient the body needs to build and maintain strong bones. Vitamin D also regulates many other cellular functions in the body, and may be able to prevent cognitive decline.

THESE DESSERT BARS ARE PEACHY KEEN

Summer is a time of year when people can enjoy their pick of fresh fruit at farm stands, supermarkets and other retailers. Many fruit trees, plants and bushes are ready for harvest in the spring and summer, meaning there’s no limit to the number of delicious recipes one can whip up with these sweet offerings

Peaches are a favorite ingredient in many different types of desserts, from cobblers to pies. But in this recipe for “Fresh Peach Crumble Bar,” peaches are presented as a cross between a cake and cookie.

Enjoy this recipe, courtesy of Saving Room for Dessert, as adapted from AllRecipes.com.

Fresh Peach Crumble Bars

Yield 20

Crust/Crumb topping:

1 cup granulated sugar

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 cup unsalted butter cold, cut into cubes

1 large egg, lightly beaten Peach layer:

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

5 large peaches, peeled and diced

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Icing:

1 cup powdered sugar

1/4 teaspoon almond extract

1 tablespoon milk (more or less for desired consistency)

1. Preheat oven to 350 F if using a glass pan or dark metal pan, or 375 F for a light metal pan. Lightly grease or spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan and set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup of sugar, 3 cups of flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Using a pastry cutter, blend in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Add the lightly beaten egg and mix until the dough starts to hold together, but is still crumbly. Gently press a little more than half the dough into the prepared pan. (Optional: Use a food processor to process these ingredients.)

3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon. Add the diced peaches and toss to combine.Drizzle the lemon juice over the peaches and toss to coat.Pour the peach mixture over the crust and spread evenly.

4. Using your hands, press together handfuls of the remaining crumb topping to create clumps. Scatter the clumps and remaining crumbled topping over the fruit layer, leaving some peaches showing through.

5. If using a glass pan, bake at 350 F for 50 to 55 minutes or until lightly browned. If using a metal pan, bake at 375 F for 40 to 45 minutes. Cool completely, then chill before cutting and icing.

6.Whisk together the powdered sugar, almond extract and milk.Drizzle on the bars just before serving

DID YOU KNOW?

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide. In the United States, one in five people will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, and more than two people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour, says the Skin Cancer Foundation. Roughly 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Melanoma also is inextricably linked to UV exposure. In the United Kingdom, nearly nine in 10 cases of melanoma can be prevented by staying safe in the sun. The American Cancer Society estimates about 100,000 new melanomas will be diagnosed in 2024, when roughly 8,290 people are expected to die of melanoma. The number of people getting skin cancer in Canada also has risen at a fairly constant rate over the last 30 years. One in 73 Canadian women and one in 59 Canadian men will develop the disease, according to Canada.ca. Early detection of skin cancer can improve prognosis.

TAILGATING DO AND DON’T THIS

SEASON

DO pay attention to food temperature. One way to tank the experience is to get food poisoning. When dining outdoors, it is essential that cold food remains cold and hot food is cooked to the proper temperature. Plenty of ice, coolers and a way to heat up food will be needed. Portable gas or charcoal grills can cook food quickly.

DON’T ignore the weather. Everyone hopes for beautiful weather on game day, but Mother Nature isn’t predictable. Plan accordingly by layering clothing and bringing ponchos or other protective gear if it is going to rain or even snow.

UNDERSTAND THE MENOPAUSE TRANSITION

What is menopause? The World Health Organization characterizes menopause as the end of a woman’s reproductive years. After true menopause, a woman cannot become pregnant naturally. Menopause is marked by the end of a monthly menstrual cycle often referred to as a “period.” Natural menopause is deemed to have occurred after 12 consecutive months without menstruation. Menopause can occur for other reasons, such as if the reproductive organs are damaged due to illness or removed for the treatment of a certain condition. This is called induced menopause.

Cold weather can be deadly for outdoor cats

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I care for a rescued barn cat who refuses to come indoors -- she will come onto the porch for food and water, and let me pet her, but that’s about it. I was able to get “Gertie” spayed a few years back, so that’s no longer a problem. However, I worry about her in the cold weather. What do you recommend to keep outdoor cats from suffering in freezing temperatures?

-- Caroline in Roanoke, Virginia

DEAR CAROLINE: Shelter is important during the coldest months of the year, and even if an outdoor cat has survived OK in past winters, that can change -- especially as they get older. Food, water and shelter are the three biggest things you can provide to help an outdoor cat survive and remain healthy during the winter. Place fresh water in a container that won’t freeze easily, such as a thick-walled dish.

The Humane Society of the United States recommends building (or purchasing) an outdoor cat shelter that is appropriate for their size -- not too snug, but not so large that it can’t hold in the cat’s body heat (www. humanesociety.org/resources/how-care-outdoor-cats-winter).

You can line the inside of the shelter with Mylar sheets that reflect body heat even better. For bedding, an old pillowcase filled with packing peanuts or crumpled newspaper is helpful, or you can use straw. Place the shelter near where you’ve observed the cat resting, or try placing it on the porch next to her food and water. (Don’t put water inside the shelter in case it spills.)

Remove and replace bedding every couple of weeks to keep things fresh and help maintain warmth.

DID YOU KNOW?

Peaches are tasty and good for the body as well. Peaches are related to apricots, cherries, almonds, and plums. They’re known as stone fruit because their flesh surrounds a shell with an edible seed. Peaches are packed with beneficial plant compounds, minerals and vitamins. Peaches contain about two grams of fiber in one medium-sized peach. Fiber helps to move food through the digestive system and reduce the likelihood of constipation, offers Healthline. Peaches also contain Vitamin A, an antioxidant that helps the immune system fight infection. They also have vitamin C, which the body needs to fight off infection. Peaches are good sources of potassium, which the body needs to regulate heart rate and blood pressure. Foods high in potassium also can help lower blood pressure, says WebMD. Vitamin K, which helps heal wounds, also is found in peaches. Research says that peaches may help to prevent cancer as well. One study indicated that consuming peach peels offers the highest level of anticancer phytochemicals, which assist in protecting cells from free radical damage that can lead to cancer.

DAILY HABIT THAT CAN HELP MEN IMPROVE THEIR OVERALL HEALTH

Drink more water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that drinking enough water each day provides a host of health benefits, including preventing dehydration. Dehydration can adversely affect mood and lead to confusion. Dehydration also can contribute to the formation of kidney stones, which the National Institutes of Health notes are more likely to affect men than women due to men’s diets and differences in urine chemistries. Symptoms of dehydration also mimic signs of hunger, which means men might overeat under the mistaken impression that they’re hungry when all their body really wants to do is hydrate. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine determined that men should consume about 15.5 cups of water per day.

CLASSIC WINE AND FOOD PAIRINGS

Congruent pairings, according to Wine Folly, create balance in the mouth by amplifying shared flavor compounds. For example, earth wines paired with earthy mushrooms. Contrasting pairings create balance through contrasting flavors. Therefore, a salad with acidity and bitterness may be complemented with a wine that is sweeter and not so acidic, or so may be the case with a fatty, salty food like foie gras.
