The sixth grade seemed to please him from the beginning: he went through a brief Egyptian Period that baffled me — he tried to walk flat a great deal, sticking one arm in front of him and one in back of him, putting one foot behind the other. He declared Egyptians walked that way; I saidif theydidIdidn’tseehow they got anything done, but Jem said they accomplished more than the Americans ever did, they invented toilet paper and perpetual embalming, and asked where would we be today if they hadn’t? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am a brandnew pet sitter with four clients. I’m able to take one pet at a time into my home to care for them when their owners are traveling for long stretches, and I do home visits for the others. Well, the toy poodle I have in my care for the next three weeks brought an unpleasant surprise: fleas! Normally I would ask the client to clear up the flea problem before pet-sitting services can continue, but I’m already caring for the dog, so I’m stuck. What should I do?
- Jane H. in Wellesley, Massachusetts
DEAR JANE: Immediately contact the client to inform them. Then ask for their permission to treat the dog. If they only want you to use a specific treatment, follow their instructions. Save your receipts for any flea treatments purchased. A flea infestation can spread to the other pets you care for, so follow these steps to reduce infestation:
-- Isolate the dog from most areas of your home until he has completed treatment and you are brushing away only dead fleas.
-- Mop and vacuum your entire home daily, especially the corners. (Hint: Put a brand-new flea collar inside the vacuum cleaner bag to kill the fleas that are sucked in.)
-- Wash or steam clean area rugs and drapes, and the dog’s bedding.
-- Wash clothes that you have worn around the dog. (Set the clothes dryer to a medium or high heat setting, which will kill most eggs and fleas.)
This is a good time to review and update your pet-sitting contract. Add a clause requiring pets to be free of fleas, ticks and communicable diseases, as well as a clause that says owners must reimburse you for expenses incurred if their pet causes an infestation.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Live events have been in high demand in recent years. During the global COVID-19 pandemic, access to live events was limited, if not eliminated, in many parts of the world.
When such restrictions were lifted, consumers could not get enough live entertainment. As a result, live event revenue in the entertainment and media industry was estimated to reach $68.7 billion in 2024, according to the PwC Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2023-2027 report.
Fans of live entertainment like sports need not be told how costly it can be to see their favorite teams in person. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices for sports tickets surged 25.1 percent between October 2022 and 2023. That spike left many fans feeling priced out of seeing their favorite teams in person. However, fans can try a handful of strategies to score tickets without breaking the bank.
· Shop the secondary market. Great deals can be found on the secondary ticket market. Though there’s never a guarantee that the secondary market will be more affordable than buying directly from a team, websites and apps like SeatGeek, Vivid Seats and others typically feature inventory long after teams release tickets through their own websites. Professional football teams may have limited inventory available for non-season ticket holders, so the secondary market may be the best option for fans who want to attend just one game. Scour these sites and apps and comparison shop between them.
· Be patient. Fans would be wise to remember the adage “patience is a virtue” when shopping for sports tickets, particularly if kickoff is months away. Sellers come from all walks of life, and some might be forced to unload their tickets at the last minute at discounted prices due to scheduling conflicts. In such instances, fans keeping a watchful eye on the secondary market may be able to snatch up great seats without going broke. Especially flexible fans may be able to score the best deals by waiting until the day of the game and shopping an hour or so before kickoff. At that point, sellers may be willing to take any amount for their seats just to get something back.
· Utilize price alerts. Price alerts can do the legwork for fans. Popular secondary market apps let fans set up alerts that allow them to define how much (or how little) they want to spend. When prices reach a price point fans are comfortable with, they will receive an alert via their email or a smartphonenotification. Fans can then snatch up tickets right away.
· Go on the road.If time allows, following a favorite team on the road might be the most affordable way to see them live.Fans who live in densely populated cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco can expect to pay more to see their favorite teams in person than fans in smaller markets. If it makes financial sense, and it might depending on where some fans live, it can be more affordable to plan a weekend getaway to see a favorite team on the road than it will be to pay inflated prices to see them play at home. Sporting events are hot tickets, but fans can try various strategies to see their favorite teams in person without busting their budgets.
Santa almost got away
A huge thank you to the fella that stopped on Five Mile Line Rd. by Klem to pick up our Santa blowup the morning of 12/30. It drifted to the middle of the road from the wind and he brought it right up to our door. Hope you have an awesome 2025!
Thank you to the florist at the West Wayne Plaza (Macedon) shop ... You sent a beautiful rose in a beautiful vase directly to our door to celebrate our 71st anniversary. What a totally unexpected, fine gesture. The florist is a small businesswoman and she didn’t have to do that, but it was such a fine gesture, we want to thank you!
Express means fast I needed one more thing from the grocery store on Christmas Eve so off to [local store] I went. I ran in and grabbed the one thing I needed and headed to the checkout. Glancing over the express lines I got in the one where the people ahead of me only had a few items. It was a seven items or less line. The woman in front of me had seven items. Just as the man in front of her was finishing up, the woman’s husband came over and handed her seven gift cards to buy. I pointed out that the line was for seven items or less and got “thank you for telling me” and then she started to get rung up. After a few cards were put through she hit some sort of limit and a manager had to come over to override the rest of the gift cards. This was taking quite a long time. All the while the line was getting longer and longer. Activating seven gift cards is NOT an express lane transaction! Please be respectful of other people.
Integrity is lacking in so many TV commercials! It is impossible to read the small print on so many TV commercials. The print is too small or similar color to the background or way too long to read in the time flashed OR all of the above. If this information is required or necessary, then it should be readable so it could be understood. And as another note, products advertised on TV should require the country of origin to help consumers make their decisions.

What to know about hospice at home e philosophy behind hospice is that people should be able to live as fully and as comfortably as possible through the last days of their lives, surrounded by loved ones and friends. Hospice treats the symptoms of illness rather than trying to be curative. Hospice also does not try to postpone nor accelerate death.
e American Cancer Society says hospice care is offered by a team of professionals who work together to manage distress, symptoms and spiritual issues. Services also are offered to family members, including access to counselors and bereavement experts. Hospice workers help family members make decisions and plan care. Hospice is a form of care, rather than a place. Saying a person is going into hospice means he or she will begin to receive this type of palliative care. While hospice can take place in a center that only offers this type of service, a hospice team can work in a variety of settings, including one’s home.
Many people receive hospice care at home. VNS Health provides care in spaces patients call home and says that hospice care can include administration of medications, arrangement of equipment (like beds and oxygen) and visits from a hospice care team. A hospice team may include nurses, social workers, physicians, therapists, and even clergy who come to the home to offer support and care.
Home hospice care begins with a team member visiting with a terminally ill person and his or her family. During a visit, needs will be addressed and the hospice team can arrange for desired services.
Members of the hospice staff will visit regularly to check up and make sure that any symptoms are under control.
Families are urged to do their homework to find the best program for their needs.

Atrial fibrillation, often referred to as “AFib,” is more common among men than women. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes AFib is caused by extremely fast and irregular beats from the upper chambers of the heart. Males are more likely than women to develop AFib, though that does not mean the condition is not a threat to women. In fact, age is a significant risk factor for AFib, and a report from Henry Ford Health noted that women tend to live longer than men, which could explain why there were more women living with AFib in 2020 than there were men. The condition also manifests differently in men than women. HFH notes that high blood pressure and heart valve disease are more likely to lead to AFib in women, while coronary artery disease and a history of heart attack are most common risk factors for AFib in men.

Home buyers must confront a host of variables in the best of times, but in recent years buyers have been forced to contend with a real estate market marked by a significant increase in home prices. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the median home sales price in the third quarter of 2023 was $431,000. at marks a significant increase since the start of 2020, when the median sales price was $329,000. at 31 percent increase in a little less than four full years can be traced to a host of variables, not the least of which is the global COVID-19 pandemic, which officially earned that designation in early March 2020. But the rise in home prices is not as recent a phenomenon as some may think. In fact, data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis indicates the median home sales price rose by 576 percent between 1980 and the third quarter of 2023.

POSSIBLE MIGRAINE TRIGGERS
Stress: The AMF indicates research has found that between 50 and 75 percent of people had a significant association between their daily stress level and their daily migraine activity. Though elevated stress levels do not always lead to migraines, stress is a trigger for nearly 70 percent of people who experience them. Identifying sources of stress and then finding healthy ways to overcome it might help people avoid migraines or reduce their frequency.

It’s perhaps no surprise that le er writing and handwriting are soon becoming lost talents in our increasingly high-tech society. Text, instant messages, and email are fantastic for their ease, convenience, and speed. But nothing beats the thrill of receiving a le er or a handwri en greeting card in the mail.
Letters have existed throughout history, from ancient India, Egypt, and Sumer, to Rome, China, and Greece up till today. Letters were utilized to self-educate in the 1600s and 1700s. Letters were primarily used to provide information, news, and pleasantries.

RISK FACTOR FOR AFIB
Existing heart conditions: Heart valve problems; hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is marked by a thickening of the walls of the heart chamber; acute coronary syndrome, an umbrella term used to refer to conditions in which blood supplies to the heart are suddenly blocked; and a history of heart attack are just some of the heart conditions that increase a person’s risk for AFib. Anyone with a personal or family history of these and other heart conditions is urged to discuss AFib with their physicians.

RISK FACTOR FOR MOLD INFESTATION IN A HOME
Basements/crawl spaces: Basements and crawl spaces are vulnerable to mold infestations because they tend to be dark and cool, which can contribute to dampness that facilitates mold growth. The Rhode Island Department of Health recommends using a dehumidifier in basements and crawl spaces.

* Many people have written in the tip to use two similarly sized bowls, one larger than the other, to serve cold salads at picnics. You add a few cups of crushed ice to the larger bowl, then nestle the smaller bowl into it, making it “chilled.” In any case, remember: Don’t leave food out longer than two hours.
* If you are doing food platters for your barbecue, consider making several smaller platters instead of one large dish. e large ones are harder to store when you prep beforehand, but a better reason is that the items will not go stale/ too warm/too cold quite as fast, and it’s easy to switch out throughout the party.
* “Purchase a small cooler to use for large quantities of sides. I have a cooler advertised as fitting a six-pack of drinks. It’s perfect for holding macaroni salad at our summer beach gatherings with family. I do not use it for anything else, and it retains its cold temperature despite the heat (when everyone remembers to keep the lid closed, of course).”

Hooray for Puzzles!
Working on a puzzle reinforces connections between brain cells, improves mental speed and is an effective way to improve short-term memory. Puzzles increase the production of dopamine, a chemical that regulates mood, memory, and concentration. Dopamine is released with every success as we solve the puzzle.
Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from

TAILGATING DO AND DON’T THIS SEASON
DO pay attention to food temperature. One way to tank the experience is to get food poisoning. When dining outdoors, it is essential that cold food remains cold and hot food is cooked to the proper temperature. Plenty of ice, coolers and a way to heat up food will be needed. Portable gas or charcoal grills can cook food quickly.
DON’T ignore the weather. Everyone hopes for beautiful weather on game day, but Mother Nature isn’t predictable. Plan accordingly by layering clothing and bringing ponchos or other protective gear if it is going to rain or even snow.
Five-year survival rates for prostate cancer are notably high. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that approximately 80 to 85 percent of all prostate cancers are detected in the local or regional stages, which plays a significant role in improving survival rates for the disease. Johns Hopkins notes that many men diagnosed with prostate cancer and treated at the local or regional stages are cancer-free after five years. Indeed, the American Cancer Society reports that the five-year survival rates for localized and regional prostate cancers was greater than 99 percent. Localized indicates there is no evidence that the cancer has spread beyond the prostate, while regional means it has spread to nearby structures or lymph nodes. The high survival rates for local and regional prostate cancers underscore the effectiveness of screening for the disease. The ACS recommends men who are at average risk for prostate cancer discuss screening with their physicians at age 50, while those at high risk should open such a dialogue at age 45. Men at very high risk, which includes individuals with a first-degree relative who had prostate cancer at an early age, should discuss screening upon reaching age 40.When prostate cancer has spread to other parts of the body, the five-year survival rate is 34 percent

By Keith Roach, M.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent fall split the skin below my left eye. I went to the emergency room to see if it required stitches. Since I complained of a headache in the back of my head on the left side, they ordered an MRI, which showed “atherosclerotic vascular disease with mild small vessel ischemic disease.” They also saw plaque within my internal carotid arteries. The ER doctors said I should see a vascular specialist soon. Of course, I am scared. I am a 76-year-old woman on Bystolic, rosuvastatin, benazeprilandthyroid replacement. I also take sulfasalazine for my inflammatory arthritis. I am thin, take many vitamins and supplements, and exercise four times a week.
Does the MRI mean I have dementia or Alzheimer’s? What does it mean? -- R.M.
Consider past accomplishments, tasks and responsibilities that are applicable to each opening and emphasize those in the summary. For example, individuals aspiring to move up to management level can emphasize past experiences in which they took on a supervisory role to complete a project.
Drink more water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that drinking enough water each day provides a host of health benefits, including preventing dehydration. Dehydration can adversely affect mood and lead to confusion. Dehydration also can contribute to the formation of kidney stones, which the National Institutes of Health notes are more likely to affect men than women due to men’s diets and differences in urine chemistries. Symptoms of dehydration also mimic signs of hunger, which means men might overeat under the mistaken impression that they’re hungry when all their body really wants to do is hydrate. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine determined that men should consume about 15.5 cups of water per day.
ANSWER: No, the MRI cannot make a diagnosis of dementia. Dementia is diagnosed presumptively by a clinical exam that notes impairments in cognitive functioning such as memory, language and attention. (A definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is made by a pathological evaluation of brain tissue, which is almost never obtained while a person is alive.) WhattheMRIshowsisadiseaseoftheblood vessels of the brain caused by cholesterol plaque.High blood pressure, smoking, high blood cholesterol, a previous family history, and other factors put people at risk for this condition. Some, but not all, people with the kinds of blood vessel disease you have will develop dementia, which is caused by cumulative damage to the brain tissue from multiplesmallstrokes.Inyourcase, boththe largevessels(carotids)andsmallvesselsare affected, suggesting that your cholesterol and blood pressure haven’t been ideal. Your doctor has already taken some steps to slow or prevent the worsening of this condition. Careful control of your blood pressure (with Bystolic and benazepril) is essential. A statin drug (rosuvastatin) has been shown to reduce stroke risk and your overall dementia risk. I don’t know whether these are the best medicines for you or whether they are at the right doses, since only your doctor knows you well enough, but it is clear that your doctor is taking steps toprotectyourheartandbrain.Inflammatory arthritis (especially rheumatoid arthritis and lupus) increases the risk of blood vessel damage in the brain and heart, so early treatment is more important with people who have these conditions. Unfortunately, not all primary care doctors know how important inflammatory arthritis is when it comes to heart attack and stroke risk. I do not believe there are any supplements or vitamins that are both safe and effective at preventing stroke, but there are a handful of people who may benefit from them. For example, people with high homocysteine in their blood may benefit from vitamin B12, folic acid, or their methylated counterparts. A careful review of your overall health condition and diet is critical. You may be referred to a specialist for cognitive testing if there is any evidence of change in your thinking ability. A few blood tests will help further stratify your risk and may show a need for additional treatment.
