TAILGATING DO AND DON’T THIS SEASON

DO pay attention to food temperature. One way to tank the experience is to get food poisoning. When dining outdoors, it is essential that cold food remains cold and hot food is cooked to the proper temperature. Plenty of ice, coolers and a way to heat up food will be needed. Portable gas or charcoal grills can cook food quickly.

DON’T ignore the weather. Everyone hopes for beautiful weather on game day, but Mother Nature isn’t predictable. Plan accordingly by layering clothing and bringing ponchos or other protective gear if it is going to rain or even snow.

The pupil can only educate himself. Teachers are the custodians of apparatus upon which he himself must turn and twist to acquire the excellencies that distinguish the better from the poorer of God’svessels.

ENJOY A FUN DAY AT A LOCAL AQUARIUM

Prepare to dine in. Be sure to factor food into your budget for a day at the aquarium. Many facilities do not permit outside food and drink as selling in-house treats is clearly a way for them to increase revenue. Prices are what you may expect at any museum, amusement park or other attraction, which means eating inside will be more costly than dining outside the building. Either eat heartily before you arrive or bring cash or card to split a meal.

An estimated 10% of Europeans are immune to HIV infection because they have an ancestor who survived bubonic plague.

The sixth grade seemed to please him from the beginning: he went through a brief Egyptian Period that baffled me — he tried to walk flat a great deal, sticking one arm in front of him and one in back of him, putting one foot behind the other. PAW’S CORNER

Make A Winter Training Schedule For Your Pet

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German Shepherd, “Dante,” is smart but stubborn, and constant training is essential. But I wanted to share a method I use to make sure I keep up with his basic obedience training and work on advanced skills year-round.

Every three to four months, I sit down with a new notebook and make a training journal for Dante. It helps me organize my thoughts around how to best train him in the late fall and winter, when going outside every day isn’t always possible, or the weather is so unpleasant that Dante won’t listen to my commands.

RABIES CLINIC

National Zoo - Parents will love Smithsonian National Zoo for any number of reasons, perhaps none more than the free admission. More than 400 species of animals are represented at the Smithsonian National Zoo, which is located in the heart of the Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. Families who want to get a glimpse of what they’ll get to see before visiting the zoo can access its animal webcams, which are live 24/7, at nationalzoo.si.edu.

I write down the training goals I want to accomplish during this period. I note any behavioral or training issues that Dante has had up to now. Shepherds, like many big dogs and herders, have a lot of energy and need at least an hour per day of exercise, so I figure out the best times to do that. ere are also a lot of holidays during this period, and the journal gives me a place to figure out in advance how I will handle travel, training, parties and other schedule challenges.

I hope my method will help other readers who are trying to maintain their dog’s obedience skills while having a busy life. -Cheryl K. in Eau Claire, Wisconsin

DEAR ZACK: at’s fantastic advice! ank you for sharing your journaling method. It sounds like it provides a space to write down much more information than jotting notes on a wall calendar. Creating a training schedule and journal also is a big help in monitoring how well your dog is progressing with their training, and noting areas where improvements can be made.

Learn To Adjust Your Body To A New Sleeping Schedule

DEAR DR. ROACH: I just retired from working the graveyard shift for 40 years. I am hoping you can share some information on how to safely learn to sleep at night once again. -- E.H.

ANSWER: Changing your body’s circadian rhythm isn’t always easy, and after such a long time, it will take longer for you. But it shouldn’t be as difficult as you might fear. When people fly to the other part of the world, they need to get accustomed to a new sleep schedule, and it usually doesn’t take more than a week or two for them to get accustomed. For you, it will be difficult learning to be up during the day, which is more of a behavioral issue than a circadian-rhythm issue.

The first advice I give is to push your internal time clock forward, not backward. Try to stay up two hours or so later each day until you get to a bedtime that works with your family (if appropriate) and goals. Your body has an easier time moving forward than backward. Bright light can be your friend or your enemy. You want bright light when you wake up, not right before bed. Computers, phones and tablets all put out light that signals your brain to wake up, so don’t use these before bed. Making sure that your bedroom is dark when you want to sleep is something you probably have already done, but it’s still worth mentioning.

Caffeine is very helpful to a lot of people, so if you partake, do so when you awaken, not before bedtime. Some people metabolize caffeine slowly, so if you do, don’t have any caffeine for at least 8 hours before planning to go to sleep.

Creole/Cajun - Creole and Cajun cooking have similar influences but are not entirely the same. Creole originated in Louisiana and uses cooking techniques from Spain and France, but spices and ingredient combinations passed down from African cultures and Native Americans. Gumbos and bread puddings are popular Creole dishes. Cajun cooking originated when French Canadians migrated to Southern Louisiana in the mid-1700s. Popular Cajun dishes incorporate crawfish, alligator and frog.

HOW TO SPEED UP YOUR GOLF GAME

Line up your putts while others are putting. Read the green while your fellow group members are putting and line up your shot accordingly so you spend less time on the greens. The USGA recommends leaving clubs on the side of the putting green that is closest to the next tee to save even more time.

Train Your Brain

Write the numbers in empty circles so that each triangle and each straight line will have different signs from 1 to 6.

3 ways National you can train your brain

3 Solve a lot of puzzles or riddles | Play games, such as treasure or scavenger hunts, that use intellect. By playing this type of game, you are training your brain and improving your cognitive abilities. Day

With the power and ability that this day possesses, it has the potential to impact a large number of lives. The importance of brain exercise cannot be overstated. Routine tasks do not maintain mental sharpness. This day urges us to use more of our brain’s potential capacity by expanding and exercising it.

1 Change things around in your routine | You'll not only notice changes in your area, but you'll also be giving your brain a chance to shake off some rust.

2 Extend your interests | Consider joining a new sport or music class. Both will aid in the development of your brain as you acquire new abilities.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, I had COVID and was given Paxlovid. I am a 74-year-old woman with a 25-year history of a fibromyalgia-type disorder, along with rheumatoid arthritis and a few other problems. I was expecting to feel worse after taking Paxlovid, but I was quite surprised that I felt much better. The COVID symptoms were gone in 24 hours, and for the first time in years, I had energy. The fibromyalgia symptoms were gone, too. This lasted for four days, then it was back to reality. Once I stopped Paxlovid, the symptom relief halted as well. Have you ever heard of this? -- F.P.

ANSWER: Yes, this is well-reported among the fibromyalgia community. It’s not at all dissimilar to what I have heard from some patients about feeling better after getting antibiotics for an unrelated condition.

As far as I know, nobody has a definitive answer as to why this happens. I doubt very much that it is an effect of Paxlovid. Many people have tried using antivirals or antibiotics for fibromyalgia, but it does not seem to be helpful. Some authorities have speculated about it suppressing other viruses, but this isn’t likely either. It seems that not only do people feel relatively better after being very sick with COVID, people report being able to do activities that they hadn’t been able to do before.

I’m sorry that I don’t have an answer as to why this happens. A diligent search doesn’t lead me to any great insight. Obviously, a better understanding of these types of conditions would be great if it could lead to more effective treatments.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc.

TIPS TO DINING OUT AS A FAMILY

Check for food allergies/ restrictions: Nowadays it is essential to be mindful of people’s diets, including foods that they may have to avoid. Individuals will want to alert the restaurant staff of any special needs well in advance to ensure their needs are accommodated.

Weather: If migrainesufferersfeeltheweatherplaysaroleintheirheadaches, they’renotnecessarily wrong. According to the Mayo Clinic, weather changes can produce chemical imbalances in the brain that can trigger a migraine. Weather-related triggers may include bright sunlight, extreme temperatures, high humidity, and barometric pressure changes, among others. Individuals who feel certain types of weather have triggered past migraines are urged to stay indoors when similar conditions arise.

Cabernet, and Bordeaux are ideal with steaks and lamb dishes. The tannins in cabernet will cut through the protein and fat in these red meats, while the fat balances out the rich tannins.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR HURRICANE SEASON

Speak with your insurance provider. The weeks or months prior to the start of hurricane season is a good time to contact your insurance provider to ensure you have adequate coverage should your home and/or possessions be damaged during a hurricane. The NOAA notes that homeowners and renter’s insurance policies do not cover flooding, which requires a separate policy. Providers may not even write flood insurance policies, while others may do so but at a very high cost. Confirm the details of your coverage prior to hurricane season so you can purchase any supplementary insurance if necessary.

Awesome Red Cross Staff

Hoarding Already

The Red Cross put out a request for blood donations to help hurricane victims. I made an appointment with the Local donation center. I can’t say enough about the wonderful staff at this location. I was treated like I was the #1 blood donor but I noticed that ALL OF US WERE TREATED like we were #1. Thank you to all the staff for their care, compassion and help.

A Heartfelt Thanks

It’s laughable seeing people already hoarding toilet paper and other items because of the dockworkers’ strike. Didn’t we learn anything from Covid? Buy more throughout the year. Stock up. With costs rising, most items cost less 6 months or a year ago. Now they run into stores and buy in bulk before anyone else does. Planning ahead helps everyone.

The volunteers of the Friends of the Batavia Peace Garden would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers, patrons, donors and friends for their unwavering support. The Peace Garden looks amazing, thanks to the dedicated volunteers who weeded and watered throughout the summer.

Our famous Friday hot dog stand had an outstanding season. Our hot dog stand volunteers worked diligently to serve our new and repeat customers. We thoroughly enjoyed everyone who stopped by for lunch and to visit.

Loud Blue [Vehicle]

We are grateful for the community support afforded to us. You all had a hand in keeping the flags flying and the flowers blooming.

A heartfelt thanks to all and we look forward to seeing you next year.

To the person who drives the blue [vehicle] all over town: your loud, obnoxious, obtrusive driving is a distraction and nuisance to numerous people. I recently saw a fleet of [vehicles] and they were quiet, so the noise level is something within your control. I think it would behoove you to find another, more productive way to spend your time; it’s curious how you are able to drive around aimlessly all night and all weekend.

* ere are many uses for empty Tic Tac containers. Here are three: Wrap with pretty paper and use as a tiny vase for a single-stem flower. Or, separate small scrapbooking supplies in them. Last, thread two needles with a length of thread -- one white and one black. Poke the needles through a small square of paper and wrap the thread around the paper. Slip into the container for a travel sewing kit.

* “We have a playroom, and the kids argue about who made what mess and who should clean up which toys. We made a cleaning schedule for the room, having one or two children per day responsible to clean up at the end of the day. It was a rough start, but the kids have learned to clean up as they go rather than leave a big mess for someone else. (Pay back is not kind.)” -- A Mom, via email
