THE LIFE OF
CHARLES LEACH
Saturday, November 30th • 1PM -4PM
HAMMONDSPORT AMERICAN LEGION 8425 NY ROUTE 54 HAMMONDSPORT, NEW YORK
What to know about hospice at home e philosophy behind hospice is that people should be able to live as fully and as comfortably as possible through the last days of their lives, surrounded by loved ones and friends. Hospice treats the symptoms of illness rather than trying to be curative. Hospice also does not try to postpone nor accelerate death.
e American Cancer Society says hospice care is offered by a team of professionals who work together to manage distress, symptoms and spiritual issues. Services also are offered to family members, including access to counselors and bereavement experts.
Hospice workers help family members make decisions and plan care. Hospice is a form of care, rather than a place. Saying a person is going into hospice means he or she will begin to receive this type of palliative care. While hospice can take place in a center that only offers this type of service, a hospice team can work in a variety of settings, including one’s home.
Many people receive hospice care at home. VNS Health provides care in spaces patients call home and says that hospice care can include administration of medications, arrangement of equipment (like beds and oxygen) and visits from a hospice care team. A hospice team may include nurses, social workers, physicians, therapists, and even clergy who come to the home to offer support and care.
Home hospice care begins with a team member visiting with a terminally ill person and his or her family. During a visit, needs will be addressed and the hospice team can arrange for desired services.
Members of the hospice staff will visit regularly to check up and make sure that any symptoms are under control.
Families are urged to do their homework to find the best program for their needs.

“If I Can’t Have a Nielsen Granite Memorial, I’m Not Going!”
BATH, NY: Chester L. Dowdle, a man of kind spirit and thoughtful nature, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on August 8, 1946, in the Town of Urbana, NY, Chester grew up to become a pillar of his community in Bath, New York, where he eventually said his goodbyes surrounded by the love of his family.
Chester’s life was one of dedication and service. After graduating from Hammondsport Central School, he honorably served his country as an Army Veteran. His post-military career saw him working as a Machine Mechanic at McConnell’s in Prattsburgh, NY, where he was not only respected for his work ethic but also cherished for his camaraderie.
After retirement Chester found joy in camping every chance he and Patty got. The memories and stories from camping trips were a focal point in Chester’s life. He was always up for anything with his camping family. Chester was an avid race fan. From watching the boys for years, to cheering on his best friend Dave Dubois on Saturday nights. Chester was deeply involved in his community. He was a proud member of the Bath V.F.W. Post 1470, Charles E. Wescott American Legion Post 173 in Bath, and the Savona Rod and Gun Club. His commitment to service and community was a testament to his character and his desire to make a positive impact on those around him.
Chester’s passion for the outdoors was a defining aspect of his life. He raised horses and was a fierce competitor in Horse Pulling competitions, a sport where he found both challenge and joy. His love for coon hunting was equally well-known, often seen with his loyal dog by his side, enjoying the tranquility of the woods. These interests were not just hobbies; they were integral parts of Chester’s identity and the way he connected with the world around him.
Family was the cornerstone of Chester’s life. He is survived by his loving life partner, Patricia K. Lee and children Robert D. Buckley Jr. (Karla), Fred Buckley (Carol), Lucretia Buckley, and Douglas Buckley (Tambi). His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Nicole Anderson, Kaili Solinas, Kristal Dvorak, Kelsi Buckley, Samantha Buckley, Trent Buckley, Garrison Cole, Brooke Buckley, and Casey Buckley, as well as several great-grandchildren; his siblings, L. Ruth Dowdle (Jim) and Bruce E. Dowdle (Florence), and his camping family.
In remembering Chester, we recall the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Chester’s life was indeed a success by this measure, as he touched numerous lives with his kindness and thoughtfulness.
Chester L. Dowdle’s story is one of love, service, and unwavering commitment to the things he held dear. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of those who knew him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his influence will continue to be felt by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. Chester will be dearly missed, yet his spirit remains a guiding light for his family, friends, and community.
A graveside service with military honors was held on Thursday November 7, 2024 at 11:00AM at the Bath National Cemetery.
In 1968, John graduated from Le Moyne College in Syracuse with a degree in Political Science. From January 1969 to November 1970, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, including a 13-month tour of duty in Korea. Upon completion of his military service, he continued his education at the Syracuse University College of Law, receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1974.
John joined the Henry J. Scudder Law Office in 1974, which eventually became the McCarthy Law Office. He practiced his entire legal career in Bath, NY; a member of the NYS Bar Association and a past President of the Steuben County Bar Association, he was legal counsel for numerous Towns, Villages and School Districts, as well as being counsel to various business organizations. In the latter years of his practice, he served in an “of counsel” position with Mullen & Associates Law Office. John was most proud of the fact that for over 40 years he represented the interests of children in Family Court. In recognition of this service, he was awarded the Michael F. Dillon Law Guardian Award for the 7th Judicial District.
As much as John enjoyed the practice of law, his greatest joy was his family, particularly his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Patricia Harris McCarthy; his children, Allison McCarthy (Alexander Jones), Jeffrey McCarthy (Kymberly Morris McCarthy) and Mathew McCarthy (Jolie Riekofski McCarthy); and his grandchildren Nevan McCarthy, Sophia Jones, Vivian McCarthy, Elise McCarthy and Genevieve McCarthy. He is also survived by his brother, Timothy F. McCarthy of Gainesville, VA; his brother-in-law, Thomas G. Harris of Wellsboro, PA; his niece, Tara McCarthy and nephews, Ryan McCarthy and Philip McCarthy; and many cousins. The funeral service was at St. Pius V Catholic Church, 35 Maple Avenue, Cohocton, New York at 11:00AM on Friday, November 8, 2024. The burial was private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Cohocton Food Pantry, 37 Maple Avenue, Cohocton, New York 14826 or to the Church or charity of your choosing.
The Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home, 22 North Main Street, Avoca is honored to assist John’s family with the arrangements.
Online condolences or remembrances of John are welcome at www.bishopdesanto.com or on the Facebook page of Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home.

Steel door replacement: Remodeling magazine notes that a steel entry door replacement is worth double what it was worth in 2023. This project offers a 188 percent ROI on an average investment of $2,355.
Set a realistic budget and expect to offer over asking price. A financial planner and/ or real estate professional can help first-time buyers determine how much they should be spending on a home. In the current market, buyers should know that they will likely need to pay more than asking price for a home. For example, the NAR reports that 28 percent of homes sold for above list price in October 2023. With that in mind, firsttime buyers may do well to look for homes that are under budget in anticipation of offering more than list price after seeing a property.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had all the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) when I was younger. I could go six months without having my period. I had all the other symptoms, too, like oily skin and facial hair. It’s a terrible thing for a young teenage girl. I also had trouble getting pregnant; though, fortunately, Clomid worked well for me during both of my pregnancies. My question is, how does PCOS affect older women? My doctor doesn’t know. Is this why my hair is thinning so badly? What else can I expect now that I’m older? (I’m 66 now, and I had menopause at 51.) What can I do about it?
I still have hot flashes and thinning hair. - L.L.P
ANSWER: I’m sorry that you aren’t getting good advice. PCOS doesn’t go away after menopause, but it’s harder to diagnose. There aren’t good data to help guide treatment, so understanding what’s happening at a biochemical level is important.
Although cysts in the ovaries are usually seen with PCOS, the most important parts of the diagnosis have more to do with androgen excess (male hormones) and abnormal ovulation. Insulin resistance is also an important part of PCOS, with or without obesity.
The androgen excess is responsible for oily skin and facial hair, and it’s partially responsible for insulin resistance. As women age, most androgen levels tend to return to normal, but women still may have some residual symptoms. Although any woman can get female-pattern hair loss (overall thinning of the hair, often worst in the center part), women with PCOS are at a higher risk for developing this type.
However, women with PCOS may also occasionally develop male-pattern hair loss (a receding hairline and thinning on the crown) when the ovaries produce excess male hormones and fewer female hormones. Treatment with the antiandrogen medication finasteride seems particularly promising, and topical (or low-dose oral) minoxidil can be helpful. A dermatologist who specializes in hair loss should be the expert in the management of PCOS-associated femalepattern hair loss.
In addition, the excess male hormones may play a role in increasing a postmenopausal woman’s risk for heart disease. HDL cholesterol levels tend to be lower in postmenopausal women with PCOS. The standard calculators to help a clinician decide when to start medication (such as a statin) to reduce the risk of heart disease are likely to underestimate the risk. Thus, diet and exercise are very important for women with PCOS. Hot flashes do not seem to be worsened by PCOS. Although hormone replacement can be used in women with hot flashes and PCOS, it is especially risky in a woman of 66 due to the increased risk of heart disease. Nonhormonal treatment, such as venlafaxine or fezolinetant, is my recommendation.
Finally, insulin resistance is present in over half of all women with PCOS, so regular evaluations of blood sugar levels and A1C levels are important to diagnose prediabetes or overt diabetes as quickly as possible. Again, diet, exercise and sometimes medication are even more important for women with PCOS, to help reduce the risk for developing diabetes.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

* “I have to wear my hair tied back for work. With all the ponytails, I get lots of little broken hairs that stick up all over my head when it’s very dry or very humid, especially when I go from a wet, yucky outside to a dry, heated inside. I have tried lots of styling products that don’t work very well. en a co-worker suggested a fabric so ener sheet. I can’t believe it, but it works.” -- P.G. in Michigan
* If you have an ink stain on fabric, try blotting it with hairspray. Saturate the ink spot with hairspray and blot using a clean white cloth or non-decorated paper towel. Repeat until all the ink is gone. Make sure you test on an inconspicuous area first.
* For every degree you lower your thermostat during the heating season, you generally reduce your energy costs by 3% daily. Also, turn down the temperature setting on your hot water heater.

ALL YOU NEED FOR A MEMORABLE NIGHT OUT
Sendinvitations: It pays to give people ample notice of an upcoming evening out so they can plan their schedules accordingly.Waiting until the last minute to see if people want to hang can diminish turnout. Send a text around a week or two in advance to lock down the date and time. Better yet, make it a regular event, such as the last Thursday of each month.
ALL YOU NEED FOR A MEMORABLE NIGHT OUT
Add a touch of adventure: Experiences with perceived risk or adversity can elevate the sense of enjoyment and camaraderie. While no one is condoning doing something illegal or dangerous, incorporating a bit of adventure into the night can bring about growth and make the experience worth talking about in the future. This may be a reason why escape rooms have grown in popularity. One idea is to explore a new city or town and let other tourists suggest places to visit. Don’t stay in one place too long so the adventure keeps evolving.
Thank you to the kind and generous lady who paid for my groceries at Tops.
Thank You!
Thank you to the gentleman at the local full service gas station. You helped fill my tire with air and brightened my Monday morning! I always appreciate the employees willing to stand in all weather to fill my gas tank.
To the people who think our local cemetery is a public park. From people who walk dogs there, to the people who take coins from the headstones, SHAME ON YOU! A cemetery is a place to remember and honor your past loved ones. Not a place for your dog to do its business, or for you to pick up change!
Money spent on political campaigns
It is unbelievable the amount of money spent in and on political campaigns. Millions are spent with the conventions and all the campaign mailings, along with the traveling and campaigning. All of that money could be spent in so many needed areas.
