Electric Shopping Carts
I felt bad for this elderly lady (80+). She was dropped off at the door. She could hardly walk or stand and had an oxygen tank. She had to wait, quite a while, until an electric handicap cart was brought in from outside by an employee. Everyone of the handicap carts were being used by other people. Most walked ok from their vehicles that were parked far out in the lot. Yes, some do require the use of a handicap cart but it amazes me that they feel more entitled to one than to someone who really does need one.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation
One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a puppy about two months ago. “Spencer” seemed to housetrain just fine, but for the last couple of weeks, he has been pooping on the bathroom rug. It’s not diarrhea, just regular healthy poos. He does it between walks – even though he poops as normal during walks! What is going on?

DEAR JOHN: Even though Spencer seems healthy, take him to the vet to rule out any underlying health issues. In the days prior to the vet appointment, get out a notepad and write down his behaviors, what time he poops each day, if he’s doing a lot of barking –anything. Bring that to the appointment; it might give the vet additional insight.
Puppies go through phases during their growth, and it’s not too unusual to see some regression in housetraining periodically. For example, when they’re teething, or as they enter their “teen” phase at around 8 months or so, you may see a change in behavior patterns or “forgetting” commands you know they’ve learned. If there is no health issue to worry about, focus on training. Go back to basics and teach him how to alert you when he needs to go outside. Work on his basic commands. Observe him closely when you’re at home to see whether his behavior is changing.
You may need to adjust your schedule as well. If he’s an especially young puppy, his body is changing rapidly and he may need more potty breaks than the training guide says. Be prepared to make those adjustments as you patiently retrain him. And don’t worry, he will fully housetrain, as long as you remain diligent.

THE RESILIENT LEGACY OF the Morgan Manning House

In the heart of Brockport stands the Morgan Manning House at 151 Main Street, a cherished emblem of local heritage and community resilience. Built in 1854 by John Ostrom and later purchased by Dayton Samuel Morgan, a pioneering industrialist, the stately Italianate home has long been a symbol of Brockport’s rich history (as well as one of the region’s architectural treasures of the Victorian era). Despite suffering devastating fire damage in 1964 and again last week, the house’s story exemplifies not only historical significance but also the unwavering spirit of the Brockport community.
e house became central to Brockport’s industrial narrative when Morgan, a key figure in mechanized agriculture, moved in during the late 1860s. According to History of Rochester and Monroe County, Morgan’s partnership at Globe Iron Works played a pivotal role in producing some of the earliest mechanized reapers, shaping the era’s agricultural landscape.
According to the Western Monroe Historical Society, the Morgan family remodeled many of the rooms on the main floor of the house in the late Victorian style, embellishing rooms with oak and cherry paneling and trim as well as stained glass windows.
Sara Morgan Manning, third of seven children born to Dayton and Susan Morgan, later inherited the home and became its most enduring steward, embodying a deep respect for tradition and community.
Following the early death of her husband, Frederick Manning, Sara returned to the home with her son, Arnold, who tragically passed away at 21. Despite personal losses, Sara remained committed to preserving the home and its heritage. Her enduring wish was that the house “would stand forever as a monument to the fine old traditions that are so important to our heritage.”
A er a 1964 fire that severely damaged the home and killed Sara at age 96, Brockport residents rallied to restore the landmark. e formation of the Western Monroe Historical Society marked a turning point, as volunteers and historians meticulously worked to return the house to its Victorian grandeur. Furnished to reflect the lifestyle of a wealthy canal town resident from the late 19th to early 20th century, the house became a living museum showcasing Brockport’s past.
Dedicated to educating diverse audiences on the life and times of the Morgan family in the late 19th century, the historical society aims to preserve and interpret the family legacy and time period through tours, educational programs, community events, school partnerships, and scholarship. By 1968, the Society received its official charter with the NYS Education Department Board of Regents, and in 1991, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. e National Parks Service has also designated it a Point of Interest on the Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor.
Over the years, the Morgan Manning House has hosted educational tours, community events, and annual celebrations such as the Outdoor Summer Pops Concert, Old-Fashioned Fourth of July, the Winter Market, Candlelight Christmas and Santa photos, Shakespeare on the Lawn, and a wide array of author and historian talks, underscoring the house’s role as a cultural hub.
Tragedy struck once again on January 14, 2025, when a four-alarm fire engulfed the house. Yet, the response from Brockport residents highlighted a profound collective resolve. Social media posts captured the community’s determination. One resident reflected, “Even in darkness, Brockport shines,” commending the “goodness and heroism” of those who supported firefighters and emergency personnel during the crisis.
e fire has rekindled efforts to safeguard Brockport’s historical narrative for future generations. Many residents recall childhood tours through the Morgan Manning House, where they learned invaluable lessons about local history and heritage. is tragedy has galvanized a renewed commitment to restoring the house, ensuring it remains a beacon of Brockport’s legacy.
e future of the Morgan Manning House looks hopeful. e Western Monroe Historical Society and Brockport’s residents have already begun rallying support to rebuild and restore this historic site. eir dedication ensures that the house will continue to educate and inspire, standing as a testament to the resilience and unity that defines Brockport.
As Sara Morgan Manning wished, her home remains a monument—not just to history, but to a community’s enduring strength and pride in its heritage.

COLD WEATHER WILDLIFE IN HOMES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE RISKS
Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.
“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

Probiotics May Help Restore Good Bacteria in the Gut
DEAR DR. ROACH: You recently wrote that you do not recommend probiotics in healthy people. I am a 78-year-old male who, three years ago, underwent an esophagectomy to remove my esophagus and part of my stomach because of cancer. I was put on 30 mg of pantoprazole, which was later increased to 40 mg. I’ve read that prolonged use of this medicine isn’t recommended. My understanding is that this medicine is used to reduce the chance of acid reflux. I have read that it also kills bacteria (both bad and good) in the stomach. I asked my primary care physician about this and whether she was OK with me starting probiotics to help restore the good bacteria. -- E.M.
ANSWER: Proton-pump inhibitors like pantoprazole are often used in people after surgical treatment for esophageal cancer. They reduce acid reflux and consequently prevent a stricture where the remainder of the esophagus meets the remainder of your stomach. While it is true that proton-pump inhibitors do have the potential for side effects with long-term use, there are times when the benefits outweigh the risks. Many esophageal cancer experts feel that the benefits outweigh the risks in esophageal survivors like you.
Long-term acid suppression does lead to changes in the gut bacteria, called the microbiome. Using probiotics to improve the quality of the microbiome has been studied, and preliminary studies showed that taking probiotics daily can get more healthy bacteria in the gut. What isn’t clear is whether this translates to better outcomes for the patient or whether any of the long-term adverse effects of proton-pump-inhibitor therapy will be reduced. It makes sense that it might help, but it is unproven as yet.
There is the potential for harm in probiotic treatment, but it’s not common. A very few cases of infection have been shown to be transmitted by probiotics. The main harm is mostly financial, since some probiotics are expensive.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 81 years old and in pretty good health. I often have a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep. A couple of months ago, I was dealing with a sore lower back from overdoing yard work, so I took two ibuprofen tablets before going to bed for several nights in a row. What I noticed is that I was able to get to sleep quicker.
I have continued to take ibuprofen as a sleep aid, and it continues to help me get to sleep. But I am wondering if there might be any medical issue that could arise from the continued daily use of ibuprofen. -- J.T.N.
ANSWER: Most people don’t find that ibuprofen helps or hurts their sleep, so I don’t recommend it as a sleep aid in general. In fact, some people find that ibuprofen can be disruptive to their sleep. Others, however, find that it makes them sleepy.
In any case, the risk of two ibuprofen tablets at night, or even every day, is small. A person with a history of ulcer disease or abnormal bleeding shouldn’t take ibuprofen daily without discussing it with their doctor.
COLD MEDICINE INGREDIENTS CAN RAISE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE
(NAPSI)—There’s a reason it’s called the “common” cold: Adults have an average two to three colds per year and children even more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Problem
Most people recover from a cold within a week to 10 days. But decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications, according to the American Heart Association.
Read The Label
Be sure to read labels on over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have high blood pressure (HBP). Some contain decongestants such as oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine.
You should also look for warnings related to high blood pressure or HBP medication and talk to your health care professional before taking OTC medications or supplements.And don’t stop taking prescribed medications without talking to your doctor.
Some OTCs are also high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. So look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for the words “sodium” or “soda.” If you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources—and one dose of some OTCs can contain more than a whole day’s allowance.
Be Careful With Supplements Or Natural (Naturopathic) Remedies Special pills, vitamins or drinks don’t substitute for prescription medications and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your health care provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised and may interfere with other medications. Some, like natural licorice and diet pills, can even raise your blood pressure.
What Else To Watch For
Other drugs and substances that can raise your blood pressure include:
• Alcohol
• Amphetamines
• Antidepressants
• Atypical Antipsychotics (such as clozapine and olanzapine)
• Caffeine
• Oral Contraceptives
• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, for example)
• Illicit Drugs
• Systemic Corticosteroids (for example, prednisone and methylprednisolone)

Sharon Root (nee Bullock) of Brockport, NY passed away on January 20, 2025. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and Christian. Sharon is survived by her husband, Gene; daughters, Kim (Ron) Dalheim of Geneseo, NY, Tammy (Sachin) Barot of San Diego, CA and Debbie (Rob) Patton of Hilton, NY, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Jonathon and Alaina Dalheim and Madeline and Nathan Patton.
Over the years the Root family hosted 14 exchange students who became and remain important members of our family.
Sharon was blessed to travel to many places in the US and around the globe. Among her favorite destinations were Israel, which she visited 3 times, Japan, and South Africa.
For over 20 years, Sharon was a speaker for Stonecro Ministries, sharing her Christian faith with ladies across New York and Pennsylvania.
e memorial service will be held at the family’s convenience.
