HOLIDAY HOSTING IN SMALL SPACES

Go small on decorations. If you know you’ll be hosting in advance of the holiday season, decorate with guests in mind. That might mean skipping a six-foot Christmas tree in favor of one that takes up less space. Avoid leaving any fragile decorations out, as adults or overexcited kids may knock them over as they try to navigate a cramped space.

1. A girl’s best friend this time of year!

2. Are you done with your nap so we can finish decorating the tree?

3. A snowy Friday morning and Springwater, NY Lakes!

1 1/2 cups fontina, mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese, shredded Dried red pepper flakes

3 Roma tomatoes, diced

4 whole eggs Pepper, to taste

1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped Preparation

1. Position oven rack in center of oven and preheat oven to 400°F.

2. Cut baguette in half and then slice it open to create four equal openfaced pieces. Remove the doughy center, leaving a half-inch border close to the edge.

3. In large skillet, sauté sausage until browned. Remove from heat, thinly coin slice and set aside.

4. Top baguettes evenly with 3/4 of shredded cheese. Shake on red pepper flakes to taste. Place sausage pieces evenly on top around the edges. Add the rest of the cheese and the diced tomatoes. Bake for 5 to 8 minutes and remove from oven.

5. Using the back of a spoon, lightly make 4 indentations in the center of the baguettes, not too close to the crust, pushing some of the ingredients to the sides. Carefully crack an egg into each depression. Grind pepper on each egg, and top with Parmesan cheese.

SIGNS YOUR PET HAS FLEAS

The presence of “flea dirt”: Black deposits within the fur near the skin are often flea droppings. If you’re unsure, drop a little into water and see if they turn it reddish-brown. If so, this is indicative of fleas.

PAW’S CORNER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read about a person who did not vaccinate their house cats, and a er one of them got out, lost all of them to feline leukemia. I can relate to this person. I only have one cat, and I thought, for a while, that I could get away without vaccinating her. Fortunately, a friend convinced me otherwise.

It turns out that it doesn’t take much to protect my baby when she depends on me to take care of her. I’ve never gone without just to pay for “Racquel’s” vaccinations, and in turn, she is a healthy cat who brings so much companionship to my life. Please tell your readers not to skip this important annual appointment. -- Donna in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

DEAR DONNA: You told them, and I thank you. Vaccinating indoor pets can seem like a pricey extravagance, but it pales in comparison to the cost of treating the diseases that they can contract if they’re not vaccinated.

To reduce the annual cost, check around for discounted shot clinics. ese are usually held on specific dates and places -- pet supply stores, public buildings or participating veterinary clinics. However, these clinics o en don’t advertise extensively due to costs, so you may need to search a bit. Contact your city or county government to see if any clinics are being held nearby, or stop in to major pet supply retailers like Petco, which o en sponsor shot clinics. If not, their workers o en know about pet health clinics nearby.

ese clinics offer required vaccinations and licenses, and sometimes have microchipping and a basic health exam available at a low fixed price per pet.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS?

The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

Oak ield Li hts Up the Holida s

for the 15th Year

The Oakfield Majestic Lights has been lighting up the holidays for 15 years, becoming a cherished tradition for residents and visitors alike. What began as a modest gathering of 10-15 trees in the town park has blossomed into a dazzling community celebration, now housed in Triangle Park, where it brings joy to everyone who drives or walks through the heart of Oakfield.

e idea was first introduced by Perry and Andrea Denton, who had moved to Oakfield from Albany. Inspired by a Christmas tree celebration in their former town, they proposed the idea to Allen Dennis, thenSuperintendent of Oakfield, and to Melissa Haacke, Oakfield’s Town Clerk and administrative assistant to the Highway Superintendent. “We went forward,” Melissa recalls, and though the initial location was convenient, it was not ideal for strolling. A suggestion from the former mayor led to the event’s relocation to Triangle Park, which has become the beloved home of the Majestic Lights ever since.

e event partners with Shetler Tree Farm in Brockport, ensuring a steady supply for the growing number of trees, which reached an impressive 95 last year. “I’d like to hit 100 trees before I retire,” Melissa says. e true magic of the Majestic Lights lies in the creativity and personal touches of the participants. Many trees are decorated in memory of loved ones, with each ornament telling a unique story. “One person decorates their tree all in purple to represent their loved one,” Melissa shares. Another features ornaments made from shotgun shells, a nod to the loved one’s passion for hunting. Businesses and organizations contribute their own festive flair: the lamb farm uses milk cartons for ornaments, the pharmacy incorporates empty pill bottles, and Farm Fresh First uses fruits and vegetables to create their display. “ ey really do a great job,” Melissa adds, emphasizing the creativity on display.

e event is much more than a visual delight. It’s a community effort sponsored by the Town and Village of Oakfield, with the Highway Department and Department of Public Works playing critical roles. “Without us all working together, we couldn’t do this,” Melissa notes, highlighting the teamwork behind the scenes. Snowy Decembers o en mean highway workers juggle snow-clearing responsibilities with assisting the Majestic Lights program, ensuring everything is ready for the festivities.

Melissa describes it as a festive time when the community comes together to celebrate the season and remember what makes Oakfield special.

Anyone can participate in the Majestic Lights event, whether by purchasing and decorating a tree or by simply enjoying the lights and getting out in the community. Churches, homeschool groups, and local businesses all contribute to the event’s vibrancy, from the living nativity to the cheerful carolers who fill Triangle Park with holiday spirit.

MajesticLightsalsospotlightOakfield’slocalbusinessesandcommunity pride. Explore the town, shop local stores, and immerse yourself in the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Come out for the December 6 festivities, but also enjoy the lights anytime during the season.

In addition to the lights, check out the “Magic Mailbox” at the Community & Government Center, where between November 15 and December 18, children can send letters to Santa and receive a personalized reply, adding a touch of wonder to their holiday season.

Majestic Lights’ success wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of so many people. Coordinators extend gratitude to every tree-decorating participant, as well as the Town and Village of Oakfield, the Town Highway Department, the Village Department of Public Works, and individuals such as Barry Flansburg and Kim Staniszewski.

“ ank you to the people who support the Majestic Lights celebration, walk the park at night, drive through, and everyone going through on foot,” Melissa says. She also gives a heartfelt shout-out to all who brave the cold to help with signs and setup, ensuring every tree is beautifully displayed.

As Oakfield celebrates the Majestic Lights for its 15th year, the event continues to embody the community’s spirit, creativity, and togetherness. It is a time to honor loved ones, create lasting memories, and share the joy of the season with neighbors and visitors alike.

e Majestic Lights officially kicks off with a tree lighting ceremony on December 6. is special evening features caroling, hot cocoa, and a living nativity, with the trees remaining illuminated each night through January 2. e event has become a cherished tradition for families, many of whom pick up and decorate their trees together over anksgiving weekend.

DOS AND DON’TS OF HOLIDAY SAFETY

HOW TO PET PROOF YOUR HOME WHEN DECKING THE HALLS

Secure the Christmas tree. Much like other residents of the home, pets may be mesmerized by a glowing Christmas tree. Pets may sniff around the tree or investigate it closely, which can increase the chances that it tips over. That poses a significant safety hazard and underscores the importance of using a sturdy stand. Fastening the tree to a wall, much like one might do with a television that isn’t mounted, adds a further layer of protection from tip-overs.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES

Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

Not just on Small Business Saturday...

Nosy

Here’s a shout out to all those small business owners who are going above and beyond to serve their communities. Especially at this time of year we should take the time to patronize the local shops, cafes, breweries and markets. These establishments are what make small towns unique, friendly and the place we’re proud to call home.

This has been on my mind and I need to say it, and I hope you read this: To the woman who called me a "nosy [expletive]," I heard you ask what your balance was on your SNAP, so I instinctively looked as customers in the past have asked the same and I checked for them. You stormed out before I could even explain why I looked at your receipt. If anyone is the [expletive], it's you.

Tow Company

Love my Penny Saver!

I just finished the current Penny Saver. Love what you do with all the articles, Did You Know, Trivia, Paws Corner, health articles, and more! Keep up the good work. I am already looking forward to the Penny Saver during the coming weeks. Have a Merry Christmas.

On Nov 14th, my car was towed to the tire place on [local road]. I trusted the tow truck driver to tow it there (1 or 2 miles) and at least lock the vehicle before giving the key to the tire associate. To make a long story short, when the car was fixed and I drove it home, the hatchback had been broken into. My camping canvas bag was missing with a kitchen set of knives worth $100-$200 gone. My insurance papers were missing from the glove compartment.

Never assume a towing company will lock your vehicle. The young man driving told me he had done this for 20 years and knew what he was doing. Really? Locking the car isn't included?

Here’s A Tip

* If you are serving hot rolls on a buffet, line the basket with aluminum foil before you line it with a towel. ey lose heat less quickly that way.

* “I’ve loved this little trick since I saw it used at a party years ago. I serve iced tea (or punch) at most of my get-togethers, and instead of ice cubes, I freeze several pounds of cleaned, destemmed white grapes. ey are a hit at every party.” -- M.A. in New York

* Need almost-instant party snacks? Try a package of storebought cheese tortellini. Cook according to package instructions (usually only a few minutes), toss with oil or salad dressing and stick each on a toothpick.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING

Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape.

Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS

Don’t overdo it. A cluttered stall at a festival or marketplace may make it difficult for consumers to browse or find what they’re looking for. NFIB® advises business owners to fill the space without it making it appear cluttered. Keep extra inventory on hand to restock displays as sales are made throughout the day.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Doesn’t Recommend Over-the-Counter Sleep Aids

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old man in reasonably good health. When I had trouble falling asleep, I would take a swig of Zzzquil, which worked perfectly every time. However, since then, my cardiologist told me to stop taking such products, so I turned to 5-mg tablets of melatonin in the evening to help induce drowsiness. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t.

One night, after I had three beers, I also took two gelcaps of Gas-X to alleviate the bloated feeling just before bed. It was about an hour or so after the melatonin, and I quickly dozed off to sleep. Since then, I noticed that if I awaken in the night and take another Gas-X, I shortly doze off again and have remarkable, complex dreams. Is this self-protocol of mine medically unsound in any way?

ANSWER: There’s a lot going on here. First off, I completely agree with your cardiologist that the sleep aid you were taking, like most over-the-counter sleep aids, contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that sedates some people. The problem with this medicine is that the quality of sleep isn’t good for many people. It also increases the risk of falls in older people and the risk of motor vehicle accidents in people who drive. It’s not a good choice for older adults.

Melatonin is safer and has fewer side effect, one of them being vivid dreams. However, 5 mg is a big dose. I usually recommend 0.5-1 mg in my older patients. Gas-X (simethicone) isn’t absorbed into the body and shouldn’t cause vivid dreams. A search found no reports of abnormal dreams with simethicone, so it was almost certainly the melatonin that caused the dreams. Maybe Gas-X allowed you to sleep while the melatonin was still around enough to give you vivid dreams.

In addition, three beers on a regular basis are more than what is considered healthy for anyone, and a man in his 80s will be affected by three beers much more than a younger man of the same size.

DR. ROACH WRITES: Seven years ago, I went to the emergency room and was told I had blood clots in my arms that traveled to my lungs. I started Eliquis. The doctor said I had a problem with factor V, but I don’t have my blood results. Do I need to stay on this blood thinner? I know it has severe side effects.

ANSWER: Factor V is a protein that is critical in making clots, and an abnormality in this protein can make a person bleed (although this is very rare). What’s more common is a condition called factor V Leiden (FVL), which makes the body resistant to the activated protein C, a natural anticoagulant. (Anticoagulants decrease blood-clotting and are sometimes referred to as “blood thinners.”) So, the net effect of FVL is that it makes blood clots a little more likely. Many people have FVL, but most will not develop a blood clot.

However, you apparently developed blood clots in both arms that caused the clots to move to the lungs, which are called pulmonary emboli. Determining the duration of therapy takes clinical judgment. Because you had clots in your arms rather than your legs, had a pulmonary embolus, and have FVL, some experts would treat you for the rest of your lifetime. I wouldn’t say that Eliquis has severe side effects. Because it reduces blood-clotting, there is a chance of bleeding. For most people with a low to average risk of bleeding, the likelihood is on the order of 1% to 2% per year. If the risk of a life-threatening clot is higher than the risk of bleeding, then continued anticoagulation is preferred.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES

What are the symptoms of peripheral nerve injuries? The Mayo Clinic notes that symptoms of peripheral nerve injuries, including pain, range from mild to severe. Severe symptoms can seriously limit individuals’ ability to perform and engage in daily activities. Symptoms differ depending on which nerve fibers are affected. Motor nerves regulate all the muscles under conscious control, helping people to walk, speak and hold objects. Sensory nerves relay information about touch, temperature and pain, while autonomic nerves regulate activities that are not consciously controlled, such as breathing, heart function and digestion. Since these functions are so different, it’s no surprise that injuries to each type of nerve produce different symptoms.
