NOW HERE’S A TIP

* To store asparagus, trim the ends and wrap them in a few paper towels that you have dampened. Keep it in the fridge for two days max. This will keep it very fresh and tasty.

* “To stretch your food dollar -- especially now that the weather is colder, and soups and stews are daily fare -- substitute peas, beans and lentils for meats whenever possible. Not only will this semivegetarian diet keep your food dollars down, it will make you healthier and it’s a more ecofriendly diet.” -- K.F. in Connecticut

* If you add dried fruit or raisins to your batter for cakes or muffins, roll them or shake them in flour first. This will prevent them from sinking down to the bottom of the pan.

* Bathroom fan reminder: When you leave your bathroom fan running excessively, you are pumping heat out of your house. Set a timer for 10 minutes maximum, and then turn it off.

* “Old pantyhose can be washed and cut up to use as stuffing for a toy. The same is true for other light materials. This can be a good way to get one more use out of something rather than putting it in the trash bin.” -- P.L. in Pennsylvania

* If your bathtub has a grainy or rough texture, try soaking the bath in vinegar, either by adding a large bottle to some water and plugging it up, or by laying down a towel and soaking it in vinegar. Scrub and remove.

VALENTINE’S DAY • TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH

Valentine’s gifters should focus on presents that will be meaningful to the recipient and something he or she may see as an indulgence.

Meet for lunch

If you can’t spare a day off from work, make a point to meet for lunch at a place halfway between your offices. This is yet another kid-free opportunity to enjoy meaningful conversation and time spent as a couple.

DID YOU KNOW?

Valentine’s Day symbols like heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, Cupid shooting his arrow and bouquets of roses are ubiquitous come February. Each of those symbolizes is meant to signify the love individuals have for their significant others, but perhaps no Valentine’s Day image is more symbolic of love than doves. According to LiveScience.com, doves have been a symbol of love since the Middle Ages, when many people believed birds chose their mates on Valentine’s Day. But the history of doves and their affiliation with love dates back even further and can be traced to the days of Greek mythology. Aphrodite is the goddess of love in Greek mythology, and she is often depicted as being surrounded by doves. Doves’ own traits also have helped them become symbols of love, as LiveScience.com notes that male doves help their female partners incubate and tend to their young, bolstering their image as caring, loving birds.

PAW’S CORNER

Crying in the Car Is Never a Good ing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My Border Collie, Sugar, gets very anxious during car rides. She is not one of those dogs who likes to stick their head out of the window! Instead, she whimpers, cries, drools and paces around on the back seat. I’m very worried that she’ll try to jump into my lap. How can I stop her crying? -- Wendy

DEAR WENDY: Poor Sugar! Anxiety in pets is o en tied to a distressing experience in their past. And her uncontrolled movement around the car is a safety issue.

Talk to Sugar’s veterinarian about her behavior. ey can provide advice and help determine if and when anti-anxiety medication should be given.

Adding a pet restraint system (like a doggie seat or seat belt) or kennel cage will keep Sugar from sliding around in the car and may help her feel more secure.

Next, help reduce Sugar’s anxiety by helping her associate car rides with good things. is will take a little extra time and e ort each day, but it’s worth it.

-- With the car parked in the driveway, sit in the back seat with Sugar (in her seat or cage) for about ve minutes. Give her a small treat and lots of praise when she does. Do this daily, without driving anywhere.

-- When Sugar regularly stays calm, shi to the driver’s seat a er sitting with her in the back seat.

-- Step up to the next level: Turn on the car, giving Sugar a treat when you do so. Put soothing music on the radio.

A trainer can be a good investment, as well. ey’ll work with Sugar (and o en the vet) to make her car rides bearable, and maybe even enjoyable.

How does your pet stand car rides? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner. com.

COLD WEATHER WILDLIFE IN HOMES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAMAGE RISKS

Many people may practice the “love thy neighbor” creed, but when it comes to four-legged wildlife such as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes when outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thinned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has found that many areas of the country continue to report increased encounters with nuisance wildlife.

“While it can be a unique experience to spot wildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be discouraged from taking up residence,” advises Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed to rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected with rabies. Because of the risks associated with these pests, homeowners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.”

-- Winston Churchill

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE

Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected.

HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY

Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day.

Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-shaped boxes or other decorative Valentine’s gifts.

Ways to Train Your Brain

ere are several “brain support” online programs out there, but many cost more than we’d like to pay.

Lumosity (lumosity.com) comes in seven languages and has games that promote memory, attention, exibility, problem-solving and more. A er you sign up, you’ll get three free games per day, and the Brain Performance Index monitors your progress. ere is a subscription plan, of course, if you want access to more areas of the site, and you can pay by the month or the year. Test the free version rst to see if you like it.

BrainHQ (brainhq.com) is another cognitive training program that you can access online. eir exercises explore brain speed, memory, attention and more. And you can design your own program. eir goals are to help you think faster, focus better and remember more. You can try it out by subscribing to their email newsletters, which have free daily exercises to sample.

As for me, I’ve found books that don’t cost much and are good at putting my brain through its paces on a daily basis. e New York Times series of puzzle books begins with the Monday editions, which are the easiest of the week. ( e crossword puzzles get increasingly di cult as the week progresses.) I found the whole series of spiral-bound puzzle books (50 to a book) on Amazon.

en there are the online jigsaw puzzles at eJigsawPuzzles.com. e puzzles (a new one every day) can be set in any number of ways, including the number of pieces in a puzzle. I’ve found that the 100-pieces level is plenty challenging when viewed on a computer monitor.

And then there is online chess, for those of us who used to play back in the day but would be embarrassed to lose to a small child now without serious brushing up of our skills. Try this for free at www.chess.com and play against their computer.

HOW TO INVOLVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AGRICULTURE

Encourage agriculture-based curriculum. After recognizing that the majority of Kenyan students had no access to farming training and education, the organization Farm Africa initiated a program to make agriculture more accessible to students. Students who participated learned about everything from keeping livestock to marketing produce for global markets. Similar programs can be encouraged in developed countries where opportunities in the field of agriculture figure to increase in the years to come.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Case of Hot Flashes Yet to Be Resolved Despite Therapy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78; I had a hysterectomy in 1976 due to excessive vaginal bleeding, but I still have my ovaries. I have had hot flashes since undergoing menopause -- they usually last three to five minutes, and I have them about every two hours around the clock (which obviously interferes with my sleep).

Over the last 28 years, I have tried Premarin (which gave me bad headaches), gabapentin, venlafaxine, Bellergal, melatonin, black cohosh, clonidine, DHEA, Pro-Gest cream (chamomile, hops and valerian root), progesterone and estrogen (together), avoiding caffeine, and eliminating dairy products. None of these have helped. I would appreciate it if you could offer any suggestions.

ANSWER: I’m sorry to hear of your difficulties. You have certainly tried about all the available therapies. There are two additional ones you might want to consider: Megesterol is a hormonal therapy that is helpful for some women, but the fact that you haven’t responded to estrogens and progestins is not promising. The other is called a stellate ganglion block. You can ask your physician about it. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: After a patient has had megadoses of IV and oral antibiotics, is there anything they should do to restore the balance in their body, such as eating probiotics or yogurt? Or is that all nonsense? -- N.W.

ANSWER: The idea makes perfect sense: Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria that is infecting us, they also kill many of the healthy bacteria that help us with digestion and other functions. (The whole suite of healthy bacteria living in our gut is termed the “microbiome.”) Why not help the gut return to normal by giving it some healthy bacteria, such as those found in yogurt with live cultures, or specific probiotics, which are just the healthy bacteria?

The answer is that it has been very hard to prove that there is any benefit in doing so. In people with no symptoms after finishing an antibiotic course, there probably aren’t any benefits.

At least one study showed what researchers called a “very severe disturbance” in the person’s microbiome and actually slowed the return to a person’s normal microbiome, which they had prior to antibiotics. Worse still, very rarely, infections have been transmitted through probiotics. Symptoms after antibiotic therapy, especially diarrhea and fever, could indicate a very severe infection called Clostridioides difficile (“C. diff”), which does not respond to probiotics and usually needs powerful antibiotics to treat. Probiotics have not been found to prevent C. diff.

EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Decreased or poor judgment. Individuals with dementia may make consistently poor decisions and may start paying less attention to their physical appearance.

FINDING THE RIGHT FITNESS FACILITY

Joining a gym can be a great way to get healthy. Monthly gym membership fees may provide the motivation sedentary men and women need to get off the couch and pursue their fitness goals, and the right gym can foster a love of exercise that lasts a lifetime.

Finding the right fitness facility is not necessarily as simple as signing up at the one nearest your home or office. Finding a facility that best suits you and your goals may require consideration of a host of factors.

Personal goals: Fitness facilities are not all one and the same. Before shopping around for a facility, men and women should make a list of their fitness goals and what they’re looking for in a gym. Aspiring bodybuilders may want a facility with an array of free weights and strength training machines, while men and women whose ultimate goal is to lose weight may prefer facilities geared more toward cardiovascular training. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends adults participate in both strength and cardiovascular training, so facilities should provide both options. But some gyms may focus more heavily on strength training, whileothersmayofferanextensiveselectionofcardiovascularequipment. Choose the facility that best aligns with your workout.

Amenities: Amenities are another important factor to consider when choosing a fitness facility. Facilities that offer a host of amenities like steam rooms, hot tubs and saunas might provide more motivation to visit the gym for adults accustomed to inactive lifestyles. In addition, such amenities might aid in adults’ recoveries.

Workout alternatives: Men and women who have never been very enthusiastic about traditional workouts may want to look for facilities that offer more options than weightlifting and cardiovascular training. Many gyms host classes like yoga, Zumba® and Pilates. Each of these are effective alternatives to more traditional workouts. When shopping around, look for facilities that offer classes for people of various skill levels, as exercises such as yoga can be very difficult for novices.

Swimming is another effective alternative to traditional workouts, and many facilities have their own pools. Adults are more likely to exercise if they enjoy their workouts, so people who love to swim may want to limit their searches to facilities with swimming pools.

Hours of operation: Hours of operation is another important factor that should not be overlooked. Working adults, especially those with families, may have very small windows of free time in which to exercise. Evenifthemostpristineandinvitingfacilitywon’tdomenandwomenmuch good if it’s not open when they’re available to workout. Before shopping for a facility, men and women should write out a weekly schedule, making note of when they’ll be working out and making sure to find a facility that accommodates that schedule.

Adults looking for a new fitness facility should consider a host of factors to ensure they find one that best suits their needs.

He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.... In winter the stars seem to have rekindled their fires, the moon achieves a fuller triumph, and the heavens wear a look of a more exalted simplicity. ~ John Burroughs, “The Snow-Walkers,” 1866

A Great Teacher

Kudos and thanks to Sara at the Livonia Public Library for using her computer skills to help patrons do what they need to do on the computer. A lot of people come in to the library needing to do this or that but don’t have the ability to do so. Sara is always willing to help and if she is unsure about how to do something, she will play around until she gets a resolution. In this day and age, a lot can be done on the computer but folks don’t always know how to do it and it is hard for some of us to learn it. Having Sara to instruct and guide us is invaluable. We deeply appreciate the time she takes to help.

Reading that sanctimonious crud last week reminded me of certain politicians who want to dictate every last freedom we’ve got left. Eat what you want! It’s no one else’s business. PET PRIDE CAT SANCTUARY & ADOPTION CENTER EXPANDS

Pet Pride Cat Sanctuary & Adoption Center, a no-kill sanctuary for cats on Route 251 in Victor, opened its expanded facility on January 21, 2023, with lots of space for cats to roam, play, and socialize with feline and human friends. Pet Pride is always open for visitors to socialize the cats, playing with them throughout the space and giving them lots of love and attention.

As human visitors enter the new space, the large vestibule allows for secure check-ins. Sta is friendly and welcoming, giving visitors space to casually meet and greet the cats throughout the facility, answering questions and giving anecdotal information about each cat.

Immediately inside the shelter is the Kitten Kingdom, a large room with lots of climbing structures and stimulating adventures for the littlest ones. Marlies Sullivan, Vice President of the Pet Pride Board of Directors and director of fundraising, says having a designated kitten space is crucial, as their immune systems are yet developing, so separating from the adult population is valuable.

Down the hall is the Community Room with oodles of cubbies for cats to explore or rest in as well as other climbing and resting spaces. Sullivan is so excited about the new Meet and Greet rooms for personal interactions between individual cats and potential adoptive parents/families. In the old space, people interacted with cats all in the same room, which was especially stressful for a lot of the cats, especially shy ones. With the new Meet and Greet rooms, Sullivan says they can have a proper meeting.

e new expansion includes a large kitchen with loads of cupboard and storage space for supplies. When my family visited on opening day, the kitchen was the centrally located place to be for the cats, as with humans in their homes. e previous outdoor enclosures (catios) allow cats plenty of fresh air and sunshine during nice weather, and the expansion includes additional outdoor space to enhance the cats’ experience.

Available adoptable cats now wear collars with their names, helping visitors bond. My daughters spent lots of time with Leila, who was ready to play even as she lounged, and Snickers, a plump gray cat ready to lay, be pet, and chat with the girls for hours.

Pet Pride currently has ve resident cats: Alli, Marge, Pine, Minnie, and Jonah. e sta says the expanded space makes Alli and other residents less grumpy. Herby, a long-haired with adorable, bright eyes has a spinal issue that impairs his movement, and while

it does not pain him, this impairment makes him sort of a resident cat. Because his brother passed away and they both have the same condition, Pet Pride sta may wait and see with Herby. Herby’s issue does not stop him from bounding a er toys and playing oh so playfully with the other cats and human visitors. We loved playing with Herby on our visit.

While the previous space could care for 30-35 felines at one time, the new 4,500 sq. . space allows a capacity of 75-80. Sullivan said Pet Pride’s goal with the expansion is to expand their impact. Sullivan says they always have a long wait list of cats needing homes, and for every cat adopted, Pet Pride can take in another from that wait list. Sullivan says Pet Pride adopted out 570 cats last year, “so with the expansion, imagine how many we can adopt out and how much of an impact we can have.”

Sullivan said the majority of cats taken in at Pet Pride come from the streets instead of from people’s homes, so a big problem the previous facility had was separating new intakes from the rest of the Pet Pride cats. With the expansion, new cats can enter, be observed for contagious illnesses or other conditions that would otherwise need tending, await surgery safely and securely, and then be introduced into the rest of the sanctuary.

Another bonus to the expansion, Sullivan says, is the designated Healing Paws Medical Center, where Pet Pride vets perform in-house care. She explained that previously, Pet Pride was at the mercy of long wait times for veterinary service appointments such as spay/neutering, essential to adopting cats out to new homes. With the new in-house surgical suite, their own veterinarian can perform these surgeries, minimizing cats’ stress in those situations as well. Less stress means higher adoptability, Sullivan says.

A designated sick room with separate heating and cooling excites Pet Pride sta as well, as they now can mitigate risks of upper respiratory illnesses that otherwise spread quickly from new intakes to the current cat population.

With only ve paid sta at Pet Pride, they are always looking for volunteers and donations. Anyone can come visit the cats. Anyone interested in adopting a cat should stop in and see if they nd a good match. ey also seek additional veterinarians and vet techs interested in volunteering to spay/neuter cats through the Pet Pride Veterinary Alliance. Anyone interested in fostering cats (usually kittens under eight weeks old or pregnant moms) should contact Pet Pride. And anyone interested in donating funds toward Pet Pride’s capital campaign may contact Marlies Sullivan at 585-402-9878.

WOMEN AND STEM

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence.

According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS

Remain positive throughout the interview. Even if you are changing careers because you’re unhappy and/or unfulfilled in your present line of work, avoid badmouthing that industry and your past employers. Doing so will only reflect negatively on you and raise a red flag with prospective employers. Instead, explain your reasons for pursuing a new career path in terms that excite potential employers about your candidate.

THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT

(NAPSI)—Anyoneinvolvedinrunningatheater, festival, orasportingorlive music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons.

Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by thehighfeesandlackofpersonalattention.Healsofoundthatthesolutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing.

By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.”

Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively.
