DID YOU KNOW? Though the importing and use of asbestos has decreased dramatically since the mid-1970s, asbestos is still used in some products. According to the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration, more than a million American employees, many of whom work in the construction industry, face significant exposure to asbestos on the job. A group of minerals that occur naturally as bundles of fibers, asbestos has been linked to cancer, a connection that was ultimately discovered after evidence in the first half of the 20th century increasingly showed that breathing in asbestos caused scarring of the lungs. The most common way people are exposed to asbestos is through asbestos inhalation. Inhalation of asbestos occurs during the mining and production of asbestos and when people are involved in the making of products that contain asbestos. While such products are banned in many countries, including throughout the European Union, some countries have yet to ban the use of asbestos. Asbestos also can be inhaled when people are exposed to insulation that contains asbestos, which is generally found in older homes.

Wall Decor - While family photos are one of the easiest, cheapest ways to customize your wall art, sometimes a room cries out for an eye-catching canvas wrapped print. Home decor stores can yield some acceptable options, but for a bigger selection - and reasonable costs - head over to www.canvasyourway.com. The same folks who pioneered the concept of custom wallpaper murals now offer millions of image options online that you can customize in several different sizes. Perhaps you need a cityscape to add just the right touch of sophistication to a living room and haven’t been able to find it in local stores. Canvas Your Way has hundreds to choose from or you can make a custom canvas print by uploading your own image. With so many options, it’s possible to find exactly what you’re looking for at a reasonable price without the worry that you’ll ever see a similar piece in someone else’s home.

Trevor Toes and Tushies Drive Provides Essentials for Children in Crisis By Kathy George
The 3rd Annual Trevor Toes and Tushies new sock and underwear drive for children benefitting RCSD’s Roberto Clemente School #8, The Crisis Nursery of Rochester and Focus on the Children wrapped up on October 12th. The drive is held in honor of a special Little Helpers member Trevor George of Penfield, NY who passed away suddenly of SUDC in August 2014 at the age of 6. Trevor came to every Little Helper’s community service project with a smile on his face, a sparkle in his eye and a desire to make others happy. Trevor loved wearing mismatched socks, jamming on his guitar and making new friends. The group was pleased to hand off the Trevor Toes and Tushies Sock and Underwear donations to RCSD Roberto Clemente School # 8 and Crisis Nursery of Greater Rochester on October 20th. Each group received about 1,450 pairs of socks and/or underwear. While it was cold and rainy outside, the Crisis Nursery was very warm and cozy. To a family in crisis that has no local support, this house can make a huge difference in helping them manage their immediate emergency. Staff are available, or make themselves available if in the middle of the night, within hours of a client reaching out to them.
Clients are instructed not to worry about packing clothes or any needed items for the kids. This is where the socks and underwear that were donated in memory of Trevor help to ease the burden for every child who walks through their door. Focus on the Children will receive their donations at a future date. Great job Little Helpers, Greece Central Schools, Penfield Central Schools, Latta Long Liquor LLC, Bright Start of Fairport, Master Kim’s Taekwondo Institutes and Pittsford Central Schools!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Chelation Therapy: Tests Can be Flawed DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please comment on chelation therapy? A urine test for mercury, lead and arsenic was done that showed abnormal elevations after I was given DMSA. I also was prescribed a long list of vitamins and supplements. This testing and treatment have caused me great confusion. -- Anon. ANSWER: Chelation is the process of using a medication to rid toxic chemicals, especially the heavy metals you mention, from the body. DMSA is a chemical that binds to mercury and lead, and is then excreted into the urine. We all have some amount of these metals in our bodies, because they are present in the environment, but few people have toxic amounts. Toxicity happens mostly in people with industrial exposure to the heavy metals. Toxic levels usually, but not always, are associated with symptoms. The DMSA you took before the urine test will cause these small amounts to be rapidly excreted by the kidney. The problem I have with this type of testing is that comparing your urine toxin levels after DMSA with urine toxin levels in healthy people who have not had DMSA is not valid, and I would not recommend treatment based on this faulty analysis. Unfortunately, the analysis you had is commonly done, so that nearly everybody tested will show falsely abnormal results. Thus, I recommend strongly against testing without a clear reason to do so, and never using this method. Chelation treatment of heavy metals is appropriate only if there are symptoms and a history of exposure, and if blood levels not obtained after administration of a chelating drug are high (or urine, for mercury). An occupational medicine physician has expertise in this area and would be a good consultant if you still are confused. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My relative is a 69-year-old who has smoked for 55 years. She has a terrible cough. I want her to cover her mouth with a hankie or tissue when she coughs. The coughing can go on for a few minutes. She insists that she is not sick, and that it’s just allergies. I say she is spraying her sputum, and I might catch what she doesn’t know she has. -- S.B. ANSWER: You don’t need to be worrying about yourself. Although it is possible that she has pneumonia, most pneumonias are not transmitted from person to person, so the risk to others is low. You need to be worrying about your relative. With this degree of cough, it is very likely that she has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. What’s worse, a small number of smokers with a cough like this have lung cancer. In all probability, she is fooling herself that she has only allergies. She needs to quit smoking, now, and also get evaluated. The booklet on COPD explains in detail both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 601W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2016 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Your Power of attorney protects loved ones Life is full of the unexpected. But just because the future is unpredictable does not mean adults cannot prepare for what lies ahead. Estate planning is important, and establishing power of attorney can be essential for men and women looking to protect their financial resources and other assets. What is power of attorney? A power of attorney, or POA, is a document that enables an individual to appoint a person or organization to manage his or her affairs should this individual become unable to do so. According to the National Caregivers Library, POA is granted to an “attorney-infact” or “agent” to give a person the legal authority to make decisions for an incapacitated “principal.” The laws for creating a power of attorney vary depending on where a person lives, but there are some general similarities regardless of geography. Why is power of attorney needed? Many people believe their families will be able to step in if an event occurs that leaves them incapacitated and unable to make decisions for themselves. Unfortunately, this is not always true. If a person is not named as an agent or granted legal access to financial, medical and other pertinent information, family members’ hands may be tied. In addition, the government may appoint someone to make certain decisions for an individual if no POA is named. Just about everyone can benefit from establishing an attorneyin-fact. Doing so does not mean men and women cannot live independently, but it will remove the legal barriers involved should a person no longer be physically or mentally capable of managing certain tasks. Power of attorney varies Power of attorney is a broad term that covers various aspects of decision-making. According to the legal resource ‘Lectric Law Library, the main types of POA include general power of attorney, health
care power of attorney, durable power of attorney, and special power of attorney. Many of the responsibilities overlap, but there are some subtle legal differences. Durable power of attorney, for example, relates to all the appointments involved in general, special and health care powers of attorney being made “durable.” This means the document will remain in effect or take effect if a person becomes mentally incompetent. Certain powers of attorney may fall within a certain time period. What is covered? An agent appointed through POA may be able to handle the following, or more, depending on the verbiage of the document: · banking transactions · buying/selling property · settling claims · filing tax returns · managing government-supplied benefits · maintaining business interests · making estate-planning decisions · deciding on medical treatments · selling personal property · fulfilling advanced health care directives Although a power of attorney document can be filled out and an agent appointed on one’s own, working with an estate planning attorney to better understand the intricacies of this vital document is advised.

On “Halloween Nite” the Town of Riga Recreation Department along with the Churchville Lions Club hosted their annual Halloween Parade to provide the community’s young “Trick or Treaters” a safe environment in which to participate. The parade started at the Churchville Commons and was led up Main Street by the Churchville Fire Department’s fire truck and followed up by the Churchville Volunteer Ambulance to the Church Lodge in Churchville Park. Once there the youngsters were treated to apples, cider, donuts, and of course bags of candy. A costume contest was also held. All involved were thrilled that the ghoulish characters were able to participate in a safe and secure environment. HUGE “Thank Yous” go out to the following people and organizations that continue to make this event memorable year after year… Lions Ruth Stewart, Parade Assistant, Tine Bruton, the

Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville Fire and Ambulance Departments, the Churchville Fire Police, the Monroe County Parks Department, and parents of all the “Trick or Treaters”. David Thomas Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga I had either left my IPad in a shopping cart at Wal~Mart, or it fell out of my mom’s truck as I was getting in. I want to thank the honest people who found it for turning it in instead of keeping it. I pray that God will give you some WONDERFUL blessing, and that you will know it was from Him. Thanks again! My husband and I would like to thank the neighbor who drives by regularly in his red truck down Chick Rd. in Darien. Your dog can be heard barking loudly out of the open window as you approach and then go past our home. We assume your pet barks the entire ride. Bless your heart for putting up with the noise, but know we really enjoy the show. When our grandchildren visit they run to try to catch a glimpse before you pass. “Dog in truck” is always a pleasant moment that makes us all smile!
Some local fire departments are happy to receive contributions in memory of recently passed department members - but are very delinquent in thanking contributors in a timely fashion - if at all. I am well aware of two cases where several months have passed without any acknowledgment of the generosity extended but it is interesting to note that the checks were cashed within four or five days after they were mailed. I have also learned that some families have been unable to write individual thank you notes because they have not been provided with a list of contributors. In one case, after repeated requests, the family received a partial/haphazard list of last names only! All of us are truly grateful for our local fire departments and the dedicated volunteers; however, this is one issue that should be addressed and resolved. A Concerned Citizen

Medical Appointments - Be prepared when scheduling or arriving to your medical appointment!! Expect to review all your personal and insurance information both on the phone and yes, again in person. Yield to Pedestrians - I cross [local] intersection almost daily after pressing the crosswalk button and waiting for the “Walk” sign. In less than two months I’ve almost been struck by cars turning left at least five times, always in broad daylight. Cars at the intersection don’t have a green arrow, meaning they must yield to ALL traffic crossing, be it car, bike, or pedestrian. I obey the traffic signs and am vigilant as I cross by foot. Please do the same and be as vigilant, drivers. My life is at stake.

DID YOU KNOW? Six of the 10 college majors with the highest salaries for new graduates have something to do with engineering. So says a survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which notes that computer engineering majors earned the top spot with an average starting salary of $70,400 for graduates who finished school in 2012. Chemical engineering majors came in second with an average starting salary of $66,4000, while computer science majors, with average starting salaries of $64,400, came in third. The NACE salary survey relied on information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the United States Census Bureau and Job Search Intelligence, a compensation management firm. In addition to computer science, the survey, which examined starting salaries for new graduates in more than 90 fields of study, found that finance, construction science/management and information sciences and systems were the only majors outside the field of engineering to crack the top 10.
