2-17 was Random Act of Kindness Day. I didn’t know. Thank you, Mr. Phone Serviceman for helping me get to the end of my driveway on Wednesday 217. I was shoveling; you came to fix a phone in house. Then came out, picked up a shovel and helped me get to the road in the last 1/3 of driveway. We talked and shoveled together. You made my day proving that chivalry is NOT dead. Thank you far more than you will know.

few. They are always professional, courteous, prompt, and attentive to the needs of others. They give back to the community in so many ways. They give a sense of security to those who have to call 911 in the night for help, knowing that they will be at your home in a very short time, assisting you during some medical crisis. Thank you all! The Italian Red Head and family in Hamlin

As of late, paramedics and volunteers/ the ambulance, have been called to our home for our son who had back surgery. Every one of these individuals are WONDERFUL and special people who go out of their way to respond to the needs of others. My family and I are truly appreciative of them, and can’t thank them enough. Andrew, Kyle, John, Kristina Alport, to name a

I would like to give a HUGE thank you to the guy in the tow truck who saw me stuck on Bright/ Hen TL road during that snow storm on Tuesday and stopped to pull out my tractor trailer! Also, to all the police, ambulance, fire department, tow companies and state/local plow companies who took the time to help everyone that day. THANK YOU! I want to thank Kirstin Flass and the staff at the Rush Library for all they do to make the library such an inviting place. The fireplace, sitting area, artwork and whimsical “Yarnstorming” pieces are just a few examples.

found! My neighbor and I are disabled and as our neighbors helped each other dig out, they left us snowed in. No emergency personnel could have made it to our house if we needed help. So where were these fine, good Samaritans????

Yes, the ambulance is there for medical purposes and not personal use. The reason for the ambulance to be taken on a “food run” is because if they receive an emergency call, they will immediately have access to the ambulance. If their “own transportation” is used, this will delay the emergency more. That being said, these volunteers have the right to eat a lunch or pick up food, don’t you eat? These volunteers you are complaining about, save lives on a daily basis. Give them a break! I find it funny that on the news the day following the big snow storm (2-1516) they showed how wonderful people are in (local town) helping each other out. Where were people like that in my neighborhood in (local town)? Nowhere to be

Please, if you see a tow truck, police car, fire truck, ambulance, or highway truck with its lights flashing, MOVE OVER or slow down. Give us room to work on the highway. There are too many close calls. Every six days a Tow truck operator is hit or even killed, due to motorists not moving over or slowing down. We are begging you - PLEASE GIVE US ROOM TO WORK. We don’t speed past your office, so don’t speed past ours. We have family, too, that we would like to go home to. (Editor’s note, It’s the law) Just think before you go vote on Election Day. If you’re going to vote for free education (higher taxes) remember this country has had “free education” for many years it’s called the GI bill. Remember everything has a price including FREEDOM. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

On February 16, a snowstorm made roads icy and difficult to travel. On my way back home from a doctor’s appointment, I was unable to stop my car at the railroad crossing and slid into a snowdrift. My car was very close to the crossing gate. When the gates came down, they hit my car and went back up. I could not move the car forward or back. The Corfu Police responded when I called 911. Friends and neighbors on Snipery Road came to help. Within an hour, my car was pushed out of the snow and I was safe at home. Thank you to everyone who came to help, especially my neighbor Adam who was the first to come to my aid and my daughter Rachel who tried her best to shovel me out. But the obstruction does not need to be complete in order to cause kidney damage. It’s the high pressure in the urethra, bladder and ureters (the tubes that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder) that causes kidney damage. Placing a catheter allows the urine to drain at low pressure if the problem is in the urethra. Normal bladder capacity is between 300-400 ml. At 880 ml, you would experience very abnormal bladder drainage and would be at high risk for ongoing kidney damage. Thus, I completely agree with your urologist that something, probably surgical, needs to be done quickly. It’s not completely clear to me whether your inability to drain the bladder is due to obstruction from enlarged prostate, even though an elevated PSA suggests that this might be the case. It also is possible that there is something wrong with the nerves that go to or from the bladder. I suspect your urologist has done additional bladder tests to help sort this out. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement as well as cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

ANSWER: Discontinuing an antidepressant such as sertraline (Zoloft) certainly can cause symptoms. Dizziness, fatigue, muscle aches, anxiety and irritability are common. It happens more frequently if the drug is suddenly stopped versus tapered down over weeks. Paroxitine (Paxil) seems to have the highest incidence of symptoms on stopping.

Go to www.seymourlibraryweb.org, click on Program Calendar, for more info.

ANSWER: The bladder is drained via a tube called the urethra, and in men, the urethra runs right through the middle of the prostate. As men get older, the prostate commonly enlarges, and this can cause resistance to flow. The symptoms can range from mildly annoying to complete obstruction. Complete obstruction is an emergency, since the kidneys will fail within a few days of being unable to drain urine at all.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have weaned off Zoloft, and I noticed a swelling of my fingers -- I can’t get my rings on. Do you think it is related? -- E.P.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion on enlarged prostate. My primary-care doctor sent me for a blood test and said my PSA number was too high, then sent me to a urologist. He said my bladder is not emptying and that I am having urine retention in the bladder. After one week of medication (Rapaflo), I had a catheter inserted for another week. He measured the urine in the bladder, and it was 880 ml. Now he is suggesting surgery. Is he going too fast? What are your thoughts on the procedure and side effects? Will this correct the problem? -- D.G.

Published last week of the month. Visit myhometown@ gvpennysaver.com to view volunteer opportunities.

However, I haven’t seen swelling as a result of stopping sertraline. It may be related, but I doubt it. Is it possible that you are consuming more salt? That’s the most common reason for increased fluid in the fingers over a short time. I would see your doctor if it doesn’t go away in a week or so. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Mini Homes a New Housing Trend Urban apartment dwellers may not be the only people residing in small spaces. The new trend in American home living is housing downsizing, when individuals decide to live in significantly closer quarters -- some as little as a walk-in closet. Move over McMansions, microhomes are the latest craze for cost- and eco-conscious individuals looking to capitalize on the American dream of home ownership. On the heels of homes doubling to over twice the size of traditional European homes in the last half century, the scale is tipping in the other direction. The national average house size dropped for the first time in nearly 15 years, about the equivalent of one room.

4 bedroom, 2.5 bath home is loaded w/character & charm from the living room fireplace & gleaming hardwoods to the newer additions! A large deck overlooks a beautiful park-like setting! Newer 2.5 car garage! Enjoy 2,400 sq. ft. of fine living space! $169,900

Kendall Schools Open Satellite Office For Mental Health In response to the national concern about mental health issues and the impact they have on student performance and school district climates, Kendall Central Schools have partnered with Orleans County Mental Health to offer a satellite office at Kendall Elementary School two days a week. Kristen Acquilano, a mental health counselor with the county, works out of the satellite office at Kendall on Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Kendall elementary through high school students are eligible to be referred to the counselor by the district’s Student Referral Team. Transportation from the high school to appointments during the school day is provided by the district for the older students. “By having the mental health collaboration, it helps us address the stressors and the root cause of a student’s behavior at school,” said Kendall Superintendent Julie Christensen. “This is a real boost to our side of the county to offer mental health services here. Coming here rather than traveling to Albion saves our families time, plus it supplements the services provided by our district’s counseling staff. By having the satellite office at the Elementary School, students can use the services provided to help them concentrate on their studies and be positive contributors in school. This new service opportunity also encourages our parents to further engage with the district on students’ academic issues.” Acquilano has a master’s degree in social work and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Students are referred to her by Kendall counseling staff. After receiving the referral, Acquilano begins the process by obtaining parent/guardian permission and insurance

information, then scheduling an hour-long initial assessment. Parents/ guardians can also contact her for guidance on receiving mental health services for their children. Once an assessment is complete, Acquilano works Mental Health Counselor with the student’s Kristen Acquilano schedule to make regular appointments. Appointments are available in the late afternoon and early evening hours for students and their families. Parents/guardians may have the opportunity to attend counseling sessions to support their child, but parents/guardians will not be able to schedule counseling appointments for themselves. Acquilano welcomes contact from parents/ guardians through email or phone if they have feedback, questions or concerns about their children and are unable to attend an appointment with them. Acquilano’s email address is Kristen.Acquilano@orleanscountyny.gov and her Orleans County Mental Health office phone number is 585-589-2787. “I am absolutely loving my experience at Kendall,” said Acquilano. “All of the staff have been warm and welcoming. I am finding it so beneficial to coordinate care with teachers and counselors. We are able to work together on case plans in order to address student needs.”

Eating right can improve quality of life Legend states that on April 2, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was the first European to discover modern-day Florida when he traveled on a quest for the mythical “Fountain of Youth.” While modern science has proven that there is no mystical fountain or body of water that can reverse or slow down the aging process, there are many steps people can take to age well and prolong their lives. Eating the right foods is one way to age well. According to Ralph Felder, M.D., Ph.D., coauthor of “The Bonus Years Diet,” reversing the aging process internally is more difficult than outward cosmetic changes. But the right foods can go a long way toward increasing both life expectancy and quality of life. Those who want to employ diet to increase their life expectancy may want to start adding more of the following foods to their breakfast, lunch and dinner plates. · Broccoli, grapes and salad: According to Health magazine, researchers have found that compounds in these three foods boast extra life-extending benefits. · Berries: In addition to their abundance of antioxidants, berries have other benefits. A 2012 study from Harvard University found that at least one serving of blueberries or two servings of strawberries each week may reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. · Fruits and vegetables: Produce is good for the body because it’s low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. Berries and whole grains are nutritious foods that can help men and women live longer, healthier lives.

healthy weight and protect against cardiovascular disease. · Whole grains: Whole grains pack a lot of nutrition into a low-calorie food. Whole grains help protect against type 2 diabetes, and researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center found study participants whose diets included plenty of whole grains and fruit cut their heart disease risk by almost half compared to those whose diets favored meat and fatty foods. · Red wine: A glass a day for women and no more than two glasses daily for men can be beneficial. Moderate consumption of red wine has been shown to slow age-related declines in cardiovascular function, according to the American Heart Association. · Fiber: Increase your fiber intake for a longer life. Research from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that the more fiber you include in your diet, the lower your risk of coronary heart disease. The daily recommendation is 25 to 35 grams. While there may be no such thing as the fountain of youth, a healthy diet can help men and women prolong their lives.
