(Money Magazine) If you’re struggling to see a silver lining in the beaten-down real estate market, consider this one: It may be a rotten moment to sell your house, but if you’ve postponed a much needed renovation project on your home - replacing a rotting deck, repairing a leaky roof or updating an antiquated bathroom - now just might be the best time in years to tackle that task. The reason: Costs are starting to drop.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

Tips to Speed through Airport Security * Pick the fastest security agent. If you are a pro at picking the fastest checkout line at the grocery store, now is the time to use your skills. Sometimes it isn’t about the shortest line, but the most efficient agent. * Don’t push the 3-1-1 rule. Peanut butter, jam, gravy and cranberry sauce won’t make it through security even if they are your lunch for the day. Treat these items just as you would lotions, toothpaste and other liquids and gels. * Keep gifts unwrapped. No one wants to have their Christmas presents greedily torn apart by TSA officers, but if they need too, they will. Wrap your gifts after you’ve flown. * Be a neat packer. Carefully packed suitcases are frequently easier to scan with the X-ray machine. If TSA agents do need to open your bag, you will be saved the embarrassment of your suitcase’s contents exploding all over the airport. * Organize carry-ons. Once you get to the X-ray machine, it’s best if you are ready to go. Stow your laptop in an easy-to-reach space and have your 3-1-1 bag ready. A few moments of planning beforehand can save you hold-ups and stress while you’re in line. * Plan a sensible outfit. Your airport outfit might have to be a little boring in order to speed through security. You don’t want to have to take off jewelry, belts, scarves, coats and lace-up boots, so today is the day to wear slip on shoes and a simple, one-layer outfit with no accessories. * Have your documents ready. Get out your drivers’ license, passport and boarding pass before you reach the agent. This keeps you from having to root around in your pockets and bags while you make others wait.
Santa Clauses Have Come to Town! By Pat May, Perinton Historical Society Director of Communications
Perinton Historical Society member Margaret E. “Peg” McGee has generously loaned over 70 pieces from her extensive Santa Claus collection to the Fairport Historical Museum, located at 18 Perrin St. for their holiday in Fairport. The collection will be on display until December 17. McGee’s collection numbers in the hundreds, and items range from decorative Santas to books and toys featuring the jolly old elf. A mechanical Santa on a motorcycle that Peg purchased for her father in the early 1960s spurred her love for Santa collecting. Although her purchasing pace has slowed due to a lack of space in her home, Peg still enjoys displaying her collection and adding an occasional piece. Peg McGee lives in the East Rochester house that was originally purchased by her grandparents in about 1920. She
Photo courtesy of Keith Boas attended schools in Rochester and East Rochester and had a long career in the banking industry before retiring. Today, Peg spends her time volunteering for various organizations. All are welcome to this free exhibit. More information and museum hours at: www.perintonhistoricalsociety.org

Thank you to the kind lady ahead of me at the HOG who passed her store credit on to me. It was about $5.00 - and your thoughtfulness made my day. By the time the clerk told me what you had done, you had already left. I hope you see this because it is NEVER too late to say “Thank you”!!!!!!
Thanks to the unknown person who stayed in the parking lot at a local grocery store after my son finished work and everything was closed to make sure I made it through the snow storm to pick up my son. It was very much appreciated!
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who took part in the benefit at Jones Hall for our grandson,

Geordan Mitchell. Whether you donated your time in the kitchen or a basket, attended the spaghetti dinner, bought raffle tickets or were just present to show your support, we thank you. We are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the residents of Cal-Mum and surrounding communities. It warms our hearts and we feel very blessed knowing that our friends, acquaintances and many others care. Many thanks again and we wish you all a very Happy Holiday season. Sincerely, Ron Roth and Marian Graney-Roth Earlier this week we had dinner at the Village Inn, corner of 98 and 104, and I had the best Prime Rib I’ve ever had. Mark and his staff are some of the friendliest people you would want to meet and the service is excellent. You need to pay them a visit, lunch, supper or Sunday Brunch are all excellent, I know you won’t be disappointed. I’ve eaten in a lot of places in WNY as well as down the east coast, this is the best. Ron Montague Brockport NY

When and why did the relatively new custom of the bridal couple “smashing” pieces of their wedding cake into each other’s faces become acceptable, expected and/or cute? In most cases, within hours of the performance, the couple has stood “in the presence of God and this company” and promised to care for and honor each other. Are they breaking a solemn vow almost immediately? If at another time, they acted in a similar manner in any public place, at the least they would be asked to leave. In a more serious instance someone could be charged with assault/ battery. I think this is so hypocritical whenever I read about fundraisers for schools, sports & sponsored by healthcare organizations, and the tickets for sale note ‘alcoholic beverages’, like wine, beer, cocktails. Alcohol is becoming the top killer of young people and innocent victims. So many people need help through health care

facilities for alcohol addiction, and yet, fundraisers still include alcoholic beverages. In today’s tumultuous society, alcohol exasperates problems instead of reducing them. Is it time for “Alcohol-Free Communities”? It has worked for Smoke-Free communities, now we need to do the same for alcohol. Healthcare costs are higher from alcoholrelated costs, inc. domestic violence, addiction, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, mental health, car/boat accidents, etc. You may not agree with this young man’s protest, but the FIRST Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives him and every other American the right (and some might point out also the duty) to free speech. Those who fought and died for this country fought and died for this very right. And exactly why does his protesting injustice mean he has to give up his living? The very fact that he is a famous football player gives him a larger voice to use in protest so that maybe more people will listen. Also, if you had bothered to “Google” his name, you would have found out that he was born in Milwaukee, WI, which, last time I checked, is still part of the U.S.A. The more you know...

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel
• On Dec. 20, 1995, the United Nations peacekeeping force formally transfers military authority in Bosnia to North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces, allowing the deployment of some 60,000 NATO troops.
• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? A prediabetes diagnosis means you have higher than normal blood glucose levels, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Excessive glucose in the blood can damage the body over time, and those diagnosed with prediabetes are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the majority of people with prediabetes do not have any symptoms. The condition is typically revealed after blood tests indicate blood glucose levels are higher than normal. Being overweight and living an inactive lifestyle are two of the biggest risk factors for prediabetes, and doctors may recommend that men and women 45 and older, especially those who are overweight, be tested for prediabetes. Those who have been diagnosed with prediabetes will not necessarily develop diabetes down the road. In fact, the NIDDK notes that men and women who lose at least 5 to 10 percent of their starting weight can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and may even be able to reverse prediabetes.

I was hiding under the neighbor’s house and they gave me food. Now I have a home, good food, and lots of cozy places to nap. Napping with my dad is my favorite thing to do. They call me their Princess.
