The Surveyor George Washington 1776 Lodge #337 F&AM Trestle Board April/May 2005 Message from the East The Trowel of Teamwork If we were to think about a simple trowel for a few moments, we would quickly discover several levels of meaning. As most know, a trowel is a handy tool that operative masons use to spread mortar when doing brickwork or stonework. The handle fits comfortably in the hand. It can be used to scrap off excesses or to contour mortar into a beautiful structure. But at this level, a trowel is merely an operative tool for a single person to use. Freemasons look deeper for symbolic interpretations of our tools. We learn that a trowel is used symbolically for the noble purpose to spread the cement of brotherly love and affection. Here we begin to see that the trowel as emblem of teamwork skills. It is used to edify others, to cement affection, and to build greater harmony among the brothers.
Our April and May Calendar April 2 is Masonic Day-Light at 8:00AM at the Scottish Rite building downtown. Come to cheer on the Man-to-Mason class for two new brothers duly elected by George Washington 1776 Lodge. April 5 at 7:30PM: Memory skills for names, mnemonics, and for the monitor. Light supper precedes Lodge at 6:30PM. April 19 at 7:30PM: Follow up session on the Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threats analysis led by Br. Mark Truesdell, PM. Light supper precedes Lodge at 6:30PM. May 3 at 5:45PM: is our Ladies of the Table (which is an open Lodge). See additional information elsewhere in the Surveyor. May 17 at 7:30PM: Teamwork exercises on giving compliments and receiving criticism with grace. Light supper precedes Lodge at 6:30PM. Fraternally, Dick Marcus, WM Congratulations to Brother Chris Adamec, our newest Master Mason. Chris (pictured with Lodge Counselor, Bob Smith, PM) was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on March 15, 2005. (Photo by Dick Paradowski)
When building a brick wall, the mason takes a good dollop of mortar on the trowel and then butters the new brick that he adds to a wall. As we build our Masonic edifice, the trowel is used to butter up each one of us with cement, which connects us into one sacred band of friends and brothers. We see the trowel as a symbolic tool that unites us as a team. The trowel adds the cement that promotes brotherly love and avoids contention. It reminds us to seek those who can best work and best agree to accomplish our work. A team uses all team members where they best can contribute to our goals. The trowel is traditionally designed as an oblong triangle, which points away from the craftsman. It never points directly at the worker — it points to others. It points to those for whom our care and brotherly love is most needed. Spiritually, when pointing the trowel toward the Heavens, it further alludes to the due reverence and love for Deity and His works in our hearts. The multiple levels of interpretation are rich as we progress from operative to symbolic meanings. As you reflect on these levels of interpretation, the symbolic meanings of the trowel are successively more involved in creating a team, a team that works in a spirit of brotherly love. Let the trowel this year be our symbol of teamwork as we work together in brotherly love.
Secretary’s Corner Thank you to those who have sent their dues. For those who have not, please send them. If there is a problem, please contact the Worshipful Master or myself. Congratulations to Brother Chris Adamec, who was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on March 15 and to Mr. Charles Caroll and Mr. Robert Schlack who will receive their degrees on April 2 at Masonic Day-Light 2005. Fraternally, David Haase, PM Secretary

'Trusty News'
Companions,
News you can use from the Board of Trustees Meteorologically, winter ended February 28th. Like farmers and gardeners, whose interests at this time of the year involve planning ahead, the Trustees have begun to discuss replacement of the building's gas furnace. The furnace has exceeded its theoretical life expectancy of thirty-five years by almost six years. It needs to be replaced. We are on-target for the anticipated three-year recovery of the cost of the new heating control system installed in 2003. The price of a new furnace will be somewhat greater and will necessarily take a longer period of time to recover the cost.
Our third convocation of the new year will be in “The Merry Month of May,” on the 12th at 7:30pm to be exact. I will try to keep the meeting short so that we may view color slides of the magnificent 132 year-old Philadelphia Masonic Temple. Come for the fellowship, the slide show, and a special spring light fluffy dessert. Courteously,
However, a new furnace will be more efficient, require less space because it will be smaller in size and would avoid potential expensive repairs to the old unit even if spare parts could be found if a breakdown occurs.
George H. Burgess, P.H.P. High Priest
