The Surveyor George Washington 1776 Lodge #337 F&AM Trestle Board November/December 2005 Message from the East Practice Leadership For many of us, there are limited opportunities for us to demonstrate leadership. So, where can we learn leadership? There are occasionally leadership training opportunities at work, but the Lodge offers us a friendly classroom of brothers who are eager for each of us to succeed. We urge our brothers to tackle tasks that they feel are difficult. As they succeed, the sense of accomplishment spurs them on to greater opportunities to practice leadership. There is an amusing question that applies to many topics, including leadership. The question is: How do you get to Carnegie Hall? The answer is: Practice, practice, practice! Leadership in our Lodge takes practice. Practice makes perfect. Practice makes permanent. What we practice, we tend to display in all we do. The key to successful leadership is practice, practice, practice. Our lodge gives us a safe and friendly environment to practice leadership. The honor and reputation of our Lodge depends on the skill with which the leadership of the Lodge manages its concerns. The general happiness of its members grows in proportion to the zeal and ability with which its leaders demonstrate the principles of our Fraternity. In many businesses, the CEO stays the leader until he or she retires or leaves for various reasons. There is little chance to rotate roles, to try other jobs within our firm, and to practice leadership. By using our method of annually rotating chairs in Lodge, we give different brothers a chance to lead. Where else can you be a Steward looking after the needs of other brothers and visitors; and the next year you are a Deacon leading candidates around; and the next a Warden or Master guiding your Lodge to greater light? This doesn’t happen often in our everyday world. But it does in Lodge. As we move into election season for new officers in November, I hope that you will be eager to practice leadership in our Lodge and be willing to attempt roles you feel apprehensive about trying. Where else will you get to practice leadership if not in our Lodge? Fraternally, Dick Marcus, Worshipful Master

Thank you for your willingness to help whenever you were called upon. There will be no assembly in November. The December 8th assembly at 7:30 pm will be followed by installation of officers for 2006. Zealously Yours, Ken Savadil, PTIM Thrice Illustrious Master

'Trusty News' News you can use from the Board of Trustees As planned and noted in previous Trestleboard issues, a new furnace has been installed in our building. It is compact, uses a spark ignition system rather than a pilot light, has a high efficiency rating and is connected to the temperature control system previously installed. We expect a substantial reduction in gas usage. By everyone observing the 'don'ttouch-the-controls/don't-touch-the-thermostats' instructions, we hope to receive maximum results from our investment. If there are any heating problems, please contact one of the Trustees. The Past Masters' nameplate project, displaying names of all Past Masters of our four consolidated Lodges, is now nearing completion. The name-boards will be mounted on one of the walls in Stegner Hall. Please note again that signs have been posted on exit doors reminding all concerned to turn off the electricity (lights) before leaving the building. In these days of higher and higher energy bills, it is incumbent on all of us to be conscientious and switch off everything before leaving. Lights are still being left on in an unused building!!! Bob Porath, P.M. Chairman, Board of Trustees.

Pot Luck Dinner Join us for Christmas Carols and good cheer. Please bring a dish to pass.
