Message from the East A Bear Story Andy Paradowski, Worshipful Master
B
rethren,
I would like to share with you a story I once heard: There was a small bear that lived in the woods with his mother. His mother had taught him to find food: grubs in logs, berries on the bushes, salmon in the stream, etc. One day a traveling circus was camped near the woods and they trapped the small bear and took him away in a cage.
Now the trainer was a very good person. He taught the bear many interesting tricks. Every time the bear properly performed the tricks he was rewarded with treats. The little bear loved the children that came to see him. He learned to love his new life. One day the trainer accidentally left the cage door unlocked and the little bear wandered off. The little bear lay down and slept for the night.
When he awoke the circus was gone. He discovered that he was right back in the woods where he was born and he was hungry. So he stood on his head and waited for food, but nothing came. He tried rolling over, but still nothing. He tried all the tricks he had learned but nothing. The other animals of the forest watched all this with quite some amusement. Finally a squirrel asked him what he was doing. The little bear told the squirrel that he was hungry and was doing tricks for food. The moral of this story is that while growing up we all learn tricks that don't serve us in our current situation. As we grow and strengthen our Lodge, let us be on the lookout for organizational behaviors ("tricks") that no longer serve our needs and be open and flexible to new ideas and different ways of doing things.

From the Secretary’s Desk
Brethren, We have started our fall with some beautiful weather. Look in your mailbox for your 2007 Statements of Dues at the end of November. Grand Lodge of Wisconsin has raised the per capita tax by $5.00 from $26 to $31. Our Lodge did not raise it’s share of the dues which is still at $34 so the total will now be $65. I wanted to get word out to all our members so that you are not surprised when you get your statements. Please call me at 414-964-4080 if you have any questions or concerns. Fraternally, David Haase, PM

THE LEVEL & THE SQUARE
September/October, 2006
We meet upon the Level and we part upon the Square What priceless words of meaning these words Masonic are Come, let us contemplate them, They are worthy of a thought; In the very walls of Masonry the sentiment is wrought. We meet upon the Level and from every station come The rich man from his palace and the poor man from his home, For the rich must leave their wealth and state outside the Mason's door, And the poor man finds his best respects upon the Checkered Floor.
We meet upon the Plumb, 'tis the order of our Guide We walk upright in every way and lean to neither side; The All-Seeing Eye that reads our hearts and doth bear us witness true, That we still try to honour God and give each man his due. We part upon the Square, for the world must have its due, We mingle with the multitude, a faithful band and true, But the influence of our gatherings in Masonry is green, And we long upon the Level to renew the happy scene. There is a World where all are equal, we are hurrying to it fast, We shall meet upon the Level when the Gates of Death are past; We shall stand before the Orient and our Master shall be there, To try the blocks we offer with His own unerring Square.
Robert Morris Poet Laureate of Freemasonry
We shall meet upon the Level there, but never thence depart, There's a Mansion, 'tis all ready for each trusting, faithful heart, There is a Mansion and a welcome and a multitude is there; Who have met upon the Level and been tried upon the Square. Let us meet upon the Level then while labouring patient here; Let us meet and let us labour though the labour be severe, Already in the western sky the signs bid us prepare, To gather up our working tools and part upon the Square. Hands round Ye faithful Brotherhood, the bright fraternal chain, We part upon the Square below and meet in Heaven Again; And the words of precious meaning, those words Masonic are, "We meet upon the level and we part upon the square".
