Tuesday, October 16, GW1776 Lodge With a smile like Carol Channing, the charm and presence of Liza Minnelli, the wit of Bob Hope and a voice like Louis Armstrong, Lisa Edgar led her dixie-land band, RAZZMATAZZ to the sheer joy of the Lodge and guests! The evening of music began with a performance by The Spirals, consisting of our own brother Mark Truesdell, PM and the lovely and talented Candice Nokes accompanied by Tom Plutshack on rhythm and lead guitar. Darryl Thomas and his four piece jazz ensemble completed the evening. (See story Page 5)

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST Borrowed Time
Richard Marcus, Worshipful Master One of the most basic tools of the craft is a measuring rod. In the EA degree, we learn about the ruler, which we call the 24 inch gauge. While operative masons use rulers to measure their work, we find that the gauge is collapsible into three equal parts. "The twenty-four inch gauge is an instrument made use of by operative Masons to measure and lay out their work; but Free and Accepted Masons are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of dividing their time; it being divided into twenty-four equal parts, is emblematical of the twenty-four hours of the day, which they are taught to divide into three equal parts; whereby are found eight hours for the service of God and a distressed worthy brother; eight hours for their usual avocations; and eight for refreshment and sleep." When a day is compartmentalized into time for service, time for work, and time for sleep, we find that we are balanced. We keep work, sleep, and service to God and others in right proportions. With the modern creation of email, cell phones, and blackberries, many find that they take their work home with them. The intrusion of work into our service to God and others as well as refreshment and sleep leads to excessive stress, high blood pressure, and anger. We think that we can save time, but time cannot be bottled up to spend at a later date. We cannot borrow even one hour from today to spend it tomorrow.
But we can decide whether to use our time for one purpose or another. We can borrow some hours from sleep to spend it on more time in our avocations and vocations, but we do that in a manner that is unbalanced. While occasional extra work can achieve a goal you desire, to do this too often takes away from our equilibrium of time for work, time for your home life, and time for service of God and a distressed worthy brother. A reexamination of the lesson of the twenty-four inch gauge shows the wisdom of time management that comes in equal parts. It is wise for our health, our energy, and our happiness. *********** Our lodge continues to welcome new members, show a spirit of charity, and demonstrate fellowship that is needed on the North Shore. If you have interest in serving in one of the chairs or other tasks, please contact Andy Paradowski or me. Our phone numbers are elsewhere in this trestle board. Thank you for all the help I have received this year from the brothers and family members of our lodge. You made this a great year. We can confidently look forward to even more next year.

Worshipful Master Dick Marcus with newly degreed Entered Apprentice, Terrence Wollins. "We profess to confer initiation, but few Masons know what real initiation involves; very few, one fears, would have the wish, the courage, or the willingness to make the necessary sacrifices to attain it if they did." - W. Jazz Cabaret - October 16
Candice Nokes and our own Mark Truesdell, P.M., “The Spirals,” accompanied by guitarist Tom Plutshack opened the evening with their own version of songs by J. J. Cale , Ira Gershwin and others as well as original music in their own eclectic acoustical style. Their energy and exuberance was contagious! Mark has been playing and creating music since high school and first met Candice when they were students at Carroll College. After gigs with various bands in the Milwaukee area, they created The Sprials in 2000 and have been performing in coffee houses and festivals across the state. Framed by the opening and closing acts, Darryl Thomas ‘ four-piece smooth jazz ensemble mesmerized the audience with perfect rhythm and intricate melodies and harmonies as each member of the band was featured in numerous solo performances. Darryl Thomas, band leader and member of Blazing Star #4 Lodge, held his Gibson Les Paul guitar like it was a part of him. His fingers danced up and down the

neck weaving a musical tapestry out of thin air. Theo Merriweather is universally recognized as one of the finest and most versatile keyboard players in the Milwaukee area. Bassist Duane Williams turned simple bass notes into a complex revelry of sound and emotion while his brother Glenn Williams did more than just lay down a rhythm with the drums. Glenn’s percussion stylings were crafted perfection. The final act of the night was Lisa Edgar & RAZZMATAZZ! This five-piece group had the audience toe-tapping to music ranging from the Gay Nineties to the Roaring Twenties. Lisa’s wit and the band’s musical talent kept everyone on the edge of their seats! One of the highlights of their performance was when Tom Loss’ Sousaphone bell began twirling around at a dizzying speed, within inches of Tom’s head. When asked later if he had ever hit himself with the instrument he said, “I know it’s coming; it’s the trombone player who has to watch out!” Slide Trombone player Pete Runde’s dry wit and deadpan expressions were as vital to the performance as his masterful tones. Lisa Edgar pointed out his extremely large two toned shoes and joked, “Two more payments and they’re his.” Vince Picciolo played “the stuff.” That’s how Lisa described his percusion instrument which was made up of a cow bell, wood block, cymbol, and horn all attached to a washboard and played with spoon tipped fingers. A virtuoso on the clarinet, Joe Aaron has been playing since, “What’s 88 minus 14?” When asked when he started getting good at the instrument he answered, “When I start getting good, I’ll let you know.” Lisa Edgar asked, “Did Joe tell you what his Social Security Number is? Three! And it’s in Roman Numerals!” Lisa got her start in a straw hat and banjo performing at Shakey’s Pizza Parlor. Remember those? She and RAZZMATAZZ have been together for about twenty years now, keeping alive the traditions of Dixieland and Vaudeville to the intense pleasure of their audiences.

Love vanquishes time. To lovers, a moment can be eternity, eternity can be the tick of a clock. Mary Parrish
Time.... They say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. Andy Warhol How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. Annie Dillard Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that the stuff life is made of. Benjamin Franklin The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is. C. S. Lewis
To live is so startling it leaves little time for anything else. Emily Dickinson
No time like the present. Mrs. Manley ... we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless. Paul Bowles Reality is a question of perspective; the further you get from the past, the more concrete and plausible it seems -but as you approach the present, it inevitably seems incredible. Salman Rushdie Time makes more converts than reason. Thomas Paine
The hurrier I go, the behinder I get. Lewis Carroll The finest workers in stone are not copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time. Henry David Thoreau Lost, yesterday, somewhere between Sunrise and Sunset, two golden hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered, for they are gone forever. Horace Mann Time is the only comforter for the loss of a mother. Jane Welsh Carlyle Time is neutral and does not change things. With courage and initiative, leaders change things. Jesse Jackson By labor we can find food and water, but all of our labor will not find for us another hour. Kenneth Patton Time and tide wait for no man. A pompous and self-satisfied proverb, and was true for a billion years; but in our day of electric wires and water-ballast we turn it around: Man waits not for time nor tide. Mark Twain
If there must be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may have peace. Thomas Paine Half our life is spent trying to find something to do with the time we have rushed through life trying to save. Will Rogers
