MESSAGE FROM THE EAST Back to Basics

Andy Paradowski, Worshipful Master

Happy Holidays! I am both humbled and honored to serve again as Master of George Washington 1776 Lodge #337. This year, in the tone set by our Most Worshipful Grand Master, we will get back to the basics. We will focus on two things this year: Making new Masons, and community service. We were off to a strong start in 2007 making new Masons. In the last three months we have initiated 4 entered apprentices. We will be busy conducting degrees as they continue on their Masonic journey. We also need to continue to attract high quality men so we can keep the momentum going. We will also focus this term on new member education and mentoring to help our new members become an active and vital part of the Lodge. This term we will have opportunities to serve our community. We will attempt to participate in some projects that will benefit our community. We will also set a charitable goal for a worthy organization and seek to meet it by the end of the year. Even getting back to the basics we will have a busy year. If you have not been to Lodge in a while, please come visit. I look forward to meeting you.

January/February 2008 The Trustees want to remind all lodge brothers that the lodge can be used for more than lodge meetings. The lodge is available to groups for any gathering at a small cost.

GW1776 Masonic Fund Gives Charitably

3 new EAs flanked by Worshipful Masters Andy Paradowski & Dick Marcus (L to R) Dan ““Butch”” Chaudoir, Ryan Augustin, and Brian Bromberek.

Degree Awards November 20, 2007 marked an unusual yet delightful event at the lodge. Not one but three Entered Apprentice degrees were awarded on the same evening! The three candidates are Ryan Augustin, Dan "Butch" Chaudoir, and Brian Bromberek. Kudos to the Lodge Degree Team for an excellent job!

GW1776 Masonic Foundation Dissolved The GW 1776 Masonic Foundation was dissolved as of December 31, 2007. Foundation Secretary Bill Huegel sent out a postcard notice on December 1st to notify all members of the decision and to inform them that “the remaining assets, after all outstanding obligations are met, will be transferred to the George Washington 1776 Masonic Fund...” Both the Foundation and the Fund are 501 (c)3 Charitable Organizations, under the IRS Code.

This decision has been discussed in lodge meetings and was mentioned in the last issue of The Surveyor.

Trustees Cut Costs Enhance Efficiency According to Dave Haase, President of the GW1776 Trustees, the group recently voted to remove the telephone from the lodge at a savings of nearly $800.00 per year. “We have a phone for 911 calls at the lodge” Brother Haase says, “To get hold of anybody, call 414-9644080.” In a move to further reduce costs and increase efficiency, the Trustees have directed building manager Bob Batchhelder to replace all light bulbs in the lodge with energy-efficient bulbs and set back the heat to 60E when not in use. Brother Batchhelder is doing an excellent job of maintaining the building and grounds, removing snow and ice in a timely manner. Thank you Bob!

The Holiday Season is a little brighter for many because of the generous donations by GW1776 Lodge members to the community. Says Dave Haase, “We have a lot to be proud of,” referring to the gift of more than $3300 to various local and national charitable organizations which include: Girl Scouts of America Boy Scouts of America The Red Cross The Salvation Army The USO Havenwoods Environmental Center Second Harvest Gilda’s Club Kathy’s House Daughters of Luke SET Ministry North Shore Library Whitefish Bay Library Shorewood Library Veteran’s Library in King, WI GW Memorial in Wash., DC The list was derived from requests, recommendations and suggestions given by Lodge members. For a copy of the recommendations please call or write Dave Haase at the Lodge. Prior to the stated Lodge meeting December 4th, members reelected Chuck Roeder & Dave Haase for the next three year term along with Senior Warden Frank Nuernberger. According to Haase the merging of the GW1776 Masonic Foundation and Fund will provide more opportunities for giving. “We as a Lodge,” Haase said, “wish to thank all of the brothers who donated money to the fund and foundation. Thank you!”

Christmas Party 2007 (continued from Page 1)

Tuesday evening, December 18th we gathered for a delicious pot luck dinner at the lodge to celebrate the Christmas Holiday Season. Newly elected Worshipful Master Andy Paradowski served up the holiday ham and attendees came laden with side dishes and desserts to share. The highlight of the evening as usual was the white elephant auction, MC’d by Br. Dave Haase. The lodge collected $225.00 to benefit the 32° Learning Center by bidding on wrapped gifts. brought by the party goers

Before and after dinner, Dick Marcus, WM led everyone singing Christmas carols. The evening became even more interesting when, after the auction, the brothers of the German Aurora Lodge joined in the festivities with carols sung in German. Despite all the planned events, the most pleasurable part of the evening was seeing old friends and sharing good times together, bringing up treasured memories and making more memories with old friends and new.

Grand Lodge Rep Comes to Christmas Party Joseph B. Harker, Jr. Warden of the Wisconsin Grand Lodge came to the Christmas party and shared his wisdom and experience with new Master Masons and even bid on white elephant gifts. According to Br. Harker, the focus of the Grand Lodge this term is getting back to basics. “We need to do what we are here to do,” he said, “make Masons!” Good degree work is what is needed. Wisconsin Masons need to look at what it takes to make an Entered Apprentice, a Fellowcraft, and a Master Mason. Without making Masons, who knows what will become of Masonry. Harker says that he is encouraged by the number of new Masons recently raised throughout Wisconsin. On the topic of degree work, Harker said that recently a Master Mason was

Jr. Steward Will Cecosh and Grand Lodge Jr. Warden Joseph B. Harker at the 2007 Christmas Party raised at the Hiram Lodge No. 50 and the entire degree team was made up of Grand Lodge Officers! For those who think that Grand Lodge Officers don’t have to keep up with the degree work, this should show them that no matter how high up the chairs, we never outgrow our responsibilities. After all, we still all meet upon the level.
