George Washington Stein Club st Membership Soars on 1 Anniversary GLENDALE, WISCONSIN – Thursday, March 19, 2009 Amid the roar of laughter and numerous toasts, the George Washington Stein Club managed to conduct a fair amount of business in under 20 minutes. This left more time for good conversation, good food, and of course good Sprecher beverages. The club meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month and whoever is celebrating a birthday for that month must bring something for everyone to eat. March’s feast included beer & cheese soup, sausage, cheese, and three kinds of beer bread. Stein Club members picked up membership cards and brass nameplates engraved by Jesse Culbertson. Bürger Meister Dave Haase announced that the custom steins have been manufactured and are sitting in a crate in a little German village waiting to be joined with another order before being loaded into a container and shipped to Wisconsin. All in all, sixteen new members joined in March bringing the total membership of the George Washington Stein Club to 80 after only one year.

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST Franklin Nuernberger, Worshipful

Ah‌ Spring is finally here. Flowers are up. We get an occasional rain instead of heavy snow, more sunlight than darkness, more sightings of neighbors, new and old. In March we had our first offsite meeting at Laurel Oaks for those members who are physically unable to travel to our regular meetings. We are tentatively planning on quarterly events even during when we are dark. The meetings will be open to all, so if you have been unable to attend regular meetings, please join us. Our practices are continuing on Monday nights. It's another way to remain or again become active in your lodge. We mostly practice degree work, but include opening and closing in the various degrees. Have you ever seen Lodge opening in the FC? Oh, when was the last time you brought in a petition? We can always use new brothers. The old rule was "Wait to be asked." If you know a good man, ask. To quote our Grand Master, "Masons take a good man, and make him better." How are you doing looking for Masonic members in your family? I've had two connections in the past few weeks.

Kings Jacks Jokers Are you a Square Dealer? Come play cards with your brethren! After a long hiatus, the Square Dealers will be meeting again at 7pm on April 30th at the Lodge. Join us as we play our favorite card games, enjoy refreshments and Masonic fellowship.

Master

From the Fort Winnebago Lodge in Portage, I received pages from their ledger in 1916 when my maternal grandfather received his degrees. I find my Masonic heritage is from both sides. Having some time to spare at a meeting, I was in the lodge library. I found a book listing the 1957 Robert Camp Class joining the Scottish Rite. Within the group, I found many men that I knew. These men from school, church, business and included our DeMolay advisor. Speaking of DeMolays: Many Masons are Senior DeMolays. Within our Lodge, I and Chuck Roeder were members of Longvic Raon Chapter as was Al Iding from Grand Lodge. PM Andy Paradowski was a member of Wauwatosa Chapter. If you are a Senior DeMolay, let one of us know. It's part of our Masonic Family. For the summer: We do go dark for July and August. EXCEPT: We will be having our ANNUAL Picnic at the Lodge on July 19th, RAIN or SHINE. Cards will be sent out. If we have the opportunity, we will have a special meeting to do degree work.

Greetings from the West Walt Smith Senior Warden Masonic Rings Recently, I came across this very inspiring poem, which in poetic form really brings light to what our craft is really all about. How we carry on in our daily lives with those we meet, be it strangers or family members, says a lot about you and our Masonic craft. This poem makes for enjoyable reading; we can all learn from it.

Masonic Rings Those men who wear those Mason rings by Michael R. Strampe Those men who helped my dad each day, They wear those Mason rings. A Square and Compass set in gold The praise of which I sing.

My mom she cried from happiness, The time the Masons came. To aid our family in distress, Without a thought of gain.

And one last time his comrades came, To aid my weeping mother. They praised and bid a fond farewell, To our fallen Brother.

My dad, he hurt his back you know, One cold and wintery day. He slipped and fell upon the ice, The insurance would not pay.

And when I’m big just like my dad, Of this it must be told. I want to wear a ring like his, A Square and Compass gold.

And after which my son did ask, About their aprons white, And of the rings upon their hands, Of gold so shiny bright.

And since that time those rings I see, On hands that help us much. With mowing lawns and hauling trash, Each day my heart they touch.

Long years have passed since when My dad was in that plaster cast. And since I swore that Solemn Oath, Which unites us to the last.

With tearful eyes I said with Pride, They’re men of spirit pure, Those men who wear those Mason rings, Of that you can be sure.

They even built a house for me, Amid our backyard tree. Where all the neighbor kids Would play with laughter full of glee.

But more than that I am proud to say, I wear his Mason ring. The one dad wore for many years, Until his death this spring.

And before he went to bed that night, The family he foretold. “Someday I’ll wear a ring like dad’s, A Square and Compass gold.”

James A. Garfield Lodge was chartered in 1914 and moved in to their newly constructed lodge on 27th street in 1921. Throughout the twenties and thirties Garfield conferred an average of 200 degrees annually. Most of its members came from the immediate neighborhood and A. O. Smith Corp. which was down the street earning it the nickname "A. O. Smith Lodge." Garfield also sponsored Milwaukee Chapter DeMolay and Job’s Daughters Bethel 5. James M Hays, Hiram W. Sawyer, and Milwaukee Lodges also met in this building. My grandfather, Herbert Johannes was raised in this building in 1922, and Uncle Ernest Johannes was Roof line detail raised here in 1947.

Garfield Lodge sold the 27th street Temple in 1969 and moved into a new building constructed by Milwaukee and Hays Lodges in Glendale. Today the old building is used by the El-Shaddai Church of God in Christ and with the exception of a square and compass on the roof line all Masonic symbols have been removed or covered.

WM Frank Nuernberger meets GM John Wilkes

At the March 7th District 12 Meeting at Lake Lodge, Right Worshipful John W. Wilke, Grand Master of Masons in Wisconsin, pointed out that our donations are not our greatest achievements. Rather, our greatest achievement is making GOOD men BETTER! The meeting addressed many interesting topics.

Targeting Master Masons Some Lodges need some "Courtesy Degree" work. The Lodges have more candidates than they process and Grand Lodge has been asked to help. We have the ability to help On Monday nights. Grand Lodge or the local will call when needed. We could earn "extra credit" toward Excellence Award. Lectures and charges are to be given at "Home Lodge". Workshop Proficiency - Degree teams- (We are ahead of the game with our practices. Could use more brothers at practice.) Mentoring - the Ashlar Award. Each candidate should have older and newer members as mentors -earn the award.

Easter Bunny’s helpers included Bill Huegel, Rosemary Shimeall, Barb Carroll, Dee Fredrich, Randi Whitsell, Lura Tesch, Marilyn Mattias and EA Keith Sargeant.

In all, over 1400 eggs were stuffed for the big event.

Matt’s first assignment as a Master Mason in 1992 was the Easter Egg Hunt. I can’t remember who was the Easter Bunny at the time, but she gave out candy and greeted the children as they arrived at the Temple. A short talk was given by the Master, telling the parents what Masonry was all about and hoped the men would consider joining. The children were excused by ages. We used to hide the eggs in the basement as well as outdoors for the older kids. This didn’t work out so well as it took the toddlers too long to manage the stairs. Later we divided up the yard by age groups. Helen Howard, wife of former treasurer Bartos Howard, and I boiled 48 dozen eggs. Later that evening the membership and ladies would dye them. The next year a brother volunteered to boil the eggs, but when he poured the water off many eggs fell into the sink and cracked. They survived the dying, but the day of the Easter Egg Hunt someone dyed raw eggs and some of the children’s clothing and hands were soiled. I found plastic eggs at K-Mart on sale after Easter for ten cents a bag, so I bought as many as I could and Dave Haase found some more. That’s how we came to use the plastic eggs and fill them with candy. The Easter Egg Hunt has been a long tradition to the residents of Whitefish Bay and is attended and enjoyed by many.

Woman of the Year Award– “and the Winner is...” Dee Fredrich On a cold February night on the year the market crashed, four avid pinocle players sat around a table in a modest home in Cleveland, Ohio. The four players consisted of a doctor, an expectant mother, her husband and a friend of the family. Whenever the mother-to-be had a pain she would get up and walk around the card table and then sit back down and continue playing. That night, Dee was born. It’s no wonder she likes to play cards so much. Dee’s father was master of his blue lodge and her mother was a star point with Eastern Star. When Dee was 14 she joined Rainbow Girls and when she joined Eastern Star at the age of 18 her mother took part in her initiation. As an officer in Eastern Star she held the station of Woman of the Year, Dee Fredrich Esther. In 1992, after 45 years with Eastern Star, Dee took a dual membership and joined Faith Chapter with her husband, Matt; Tony and Pat Busalacchi; and Bob and Kathleen Smith. She held the offices of Marshal and Treasurer for the next five years. When Matt Fredrich was appointed Grand Warder, Dee traveled with him as his Escort. Their travels took them throughout the state as well as to Minnesota, Michigan and the Grand Chapter in Louisiana. This April marked the 62nd Anniversary of Dee’s involvement with Eastern Star. Her dedication and commitment to the craft has been noted and appreciated by everyone who has had the pleasure and honor to know her and to work with her.
