Membership CLIMBS AT Lodge WHITEFISH BAY, WISCONSIN Tuesday, July 14th was a magical night. Although in darkness, the lodge held a special communication to raise Brother Joe Fahrenkopf to the sublime degree of Master Mason. A surprise appearance by Brother Craig S. Campbell, Most Worshipful Grand Master
of Masons in Wisconsin put the pressure on for the degree team. Also in attendance were Joe Lieungh of Freemasons Lodge No. 363 and Andy and Mark Pachefsky from Milwaukee-Harmony Lodge No. 261. Joe was the fourth Master Mason raised at GW1776 this year. (Cont. Page 6)

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST Franklin Nuernberger, Worshipful Master
Summer is gone. Summer? Did we have one? How did you spend summer? While we were dark, we did have a Special Communication at which we raised our fourth Master Mason in three months. We were privileged to have as a special visitor, Craig S. Campbell, Worshipful Grand Master for the State of Wisconsin. Brother Campbell, both in his opening speech and his article in the summer issue of the Masonic Journal, stated that he sees a rebuilding of the Craft. We are part of that rebuilding, raising four new Master Masons in May, June and July. And we have another MM degree on September 29th. Keep the date in mind. We would love to have a full lodge that night. I've suggested that you research your family for Masons within your family. Have you had any success? Actually, we have a lot of family in
Masonry, WE ARE ALL BROTHERS!! We would appreciate it if those who live within a reasonable driving distance, consider becoming more active in the lodge. We all have something to add. We can all gain from the activity. With that in mind, if you live in or near the metropolitan area, attend some meetings. I realize that illness and weather can be a problem. Talk up the fraternity with sons, brothers, nephews and friends. We have something to offer all men. Our Lodge cannot become too large. Or could we? We became one from four. Have we the nucleus to help Masonic growth? We did it before. Come become active again, if you can. Keep your lodge in your prayers, remember the fraternity to your family and friends.

From the Secretary’s Desk Brethren, Greetings to all. Hope 2009 has been a great year so far. Welcome to our newest Master Masons; our lodge is beginning to be more active. Please come and join us.
September/October, 2009
Trustee Corner Our maintenance committee chairman, Br. Bob, has done a great job this past summer in making the lodge look great. Our Berm committee has been doing a super job in controlling the weeds. We think within a season it will be better than ever. A special thank you to Br. Jack Weiland for all his help with taking care of our sign outside. Thanks to all who helped with our lodge clean up day. With many hands our lodge will continue to look great.
A few of our brothers are still behind with dues. We will send out a 60 day notice with possible suspension to follow according to the Grand Lodge. If you have concerns, please call and I will do what I can.

Greetings from the West Walt Smith Senior Warden Masonic Awareness I want to take this opportunity to thank all the officers involved in the degrees we put on in the past months. As we guide more good men to become Masons, we must look squarely into the challenge of performing Masonry to the betterment of our fraternity and ourselves. We should discover our own Masonic calling and our own place in Masonry. Masonic imagery is a very valuable resource and it really inspires us to take some new action for personal growth and a different way of thinking. Our identity as Masons, in life, improving ourselves in body, mind and spirit, cannot be replaced by even our best known symbol, the square and compasses. We must bring forth the Mason within each of us so that the public at large can better understand Masonry and our fraternity.
Kings Jacks Jokers Are you a Square Dealer? Come play cards with your brethren! Square Dealers will be meeting again at 7pm on October 3rd at the Lodge. Join us as we play our favorite card games, enjoy refreshments and Masonic fellowship.
Dinner Club The next Dinner Clubs will be Friday, September 25th at Pandl’s, 8825 N. Lake Dr. in Bayside and October 23rd at the Bavarian Inn, 700 West Lexington Blvd , Glendale. Drinks at 6pm followed by dinner and lively conversation. All are welcome at Dinner Club including ladies, friends and family. Please RSVP by the Thursday before each Dinner Club meeting. by Terry Johannes This is the second in a series about Masonic Temples no longer being used for their original purpose. These abandoned and reclaimed structures remain memorials to our glorious past. Dedicated to this quest, the author investigates the Lost Temples of Wisconsin. -ed. Henry L. Palmer Lodge No. 301 was chartered in 1910 as Milwaukee's first North side lodge and moved into their new lodge on First Street in 1914. By 1921 Palmer had raised its one thousandth Master Mason and averaged 330 degrees a year through the 1920's. The Palmer Temple was too small for their social events so they held them at the auditorium downtown and summer picnics had to be held at State Fair Park. Palmer is also credited with originating the "Master's Board" which is used as the final interview for new candidates.

By 1921 Palmer had raised its one thousandth Master Mason...
Palmer Lodge moved to their new building in 1962. There are no signs in front of the old lodge building, but a neighbor told me that it is now a church. Palmer Lodge is my favorite lodge building. I encourage anyone who has an interest in Masonic symbolism to make a trip to First Street to study the facade, as it is completely covered with Masonic signs, tokens, and quotes in stone and stained glass. All is intact. It makes one wonder what Masonic treasures still can be found inside.

GW1776 Degree Team Initiates Five EAs for Freemasons Lodge On Saturday, May 16, 2009, members of the GW1776 degree team gathered at the Milwaukee Scottish Rite Temple and helped the Brethren of Freemasons Lodge No. 363 by initiating five new brothers into the ancient fraternity as Entered Apprentices. Present from GW1776 were George Burgess, PM; Andy Paradowski, PM; Bill Huegel, PM; Frank Nuernberger, WM; Walt Smith, SW; Chuck Carroll, SD; Will Cekosh, JD; Josh Armstrong, SS; and from Milwaukee Harmony Lodge, Andy Pachefsky, JS. Annual Lodge Picnic Huge Success by Otto Tesch, Junior Warden Our Annual Lodge Picnic was held at 1:00 pm Sunday July 26, 2009. There were about 32 present to eat the hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, and corn on the cob provided. And of course there were the usual condiments, as well as potato salad, seasonal fruits, jello, cool whip, cake and muffins.
Fun for young and old alike.
Good friends and brothers–the joy of life.
There were a bean bag game, and something called "ladder ball" and whiffle ball and bat and a Nerf football to play with after the gorging. And there was pleasant conversation. In addition to our activities, there were bicycle races making a turn at our northwest corner. There was also an air show at the lakefront from which single and multiple jet and propeller aircraft occasionally roared over the lodge. I am told by several sources that it was quite a pleasant afternoon.
Senior Steward Steps Down Terry Johannes has stepped down from the Senior Steward position. Family and time constraints have made it difficult to perform the duties of Senior Steward and for the good of the Lodge he is making way for someone else to take his place. Josh Armstrong will be assuming the role of the Senior Steward in September and will be replaced at the Junior Steward position by one of our new Master Masons, Keith Sergeant. Good luck to all!

RAY THE MAGNIFICENT'S SECOND RETIREMENT by Br. Dick Marcus, PM Before the merger of our several lodges in 2000, Brother Ray Courtnage was the custodian of Shorewood Lodge. After the merger, Brother Ray became the custodian of George Washington Lodge from 2000-2005. Brother Ray Courtnage recently celebrated his second retirement, this time from the custodial staff of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Over thirty well-wishers gathered to sing, "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," and to present him with a framed proclamation, which includes in part: Whereas, Raymond K. Courtnage set a standard for helpfulness, courtesy, dependability, and courage; and, Whereas, Raymond K. Courtnage was a friend to management, faculty, and students alike; Now Therefore, the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business does proclaim July 31, 2009, to be Ray the Magnificent Custodian Day. After 36 years, Brother Ray first retired from Northwest Airlines. After which, Ray worked for a time at Walgreen's before joining UWM in 2006. He so thoroughly impressed everyone at UWM to be honored with a UWM Distinguished Service Award in 2008 and now again with his second retirement party. Ray said at his retirement party something familiarly Masonic, "I always stay on the level." Congratulations, Ray.

Degree Team Looks Forward to Competition in 2010
You won’t want to be absent on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, when GW1776 will host Area Lodges Aurora, Palmer, Wisconsin 13, and Milwaukee Harmony for a stated meeting with a bonus. Josh Armstrong will reprise his fascinating lecture about the History of the Masonic Apron, and Will Cekosh, his talk on the Letter “G.”
When the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Craig S. Campbell visited GW1776 Lodge in July, he mentioned that there will be a Degree Competition in 2010. Apparently the competition will be on the EA degree and our degree team is excited about it since they have been practicing every Monday night for over a year now. If you would like to be part of the competition, or if you just want to lend your support to help our degree team be the best in the state, then check the calendar and come to the Monday night degree practices.
Return to Laurel Oaks According to Terry Johannes, we will be meeting at Laurel Oaks, either in November or December for dinner and a social meeting with our Masonic Brothers who are living there. Keep your eyes peeled in the next issue of the Surveyor for more information on this event.
Don’t forget Elections for next year’s officers take place Tuesday, November 3, 2009.
Raising a Master Mason in September We need everyone and then some to attend a special communication on Tuesday, September 29th for the purpose of raising Br. Terry Wollens to the sublime degree of Master Mason.
DICK MARCUS & DAVE BOWEN PRESENT A Casting Call for
Murder! A Play at George Washington 1776 Lodge For the past several years, the lodge has hosted some musical cabarets in October. This year, we have been planning to mount a short play, with interaction and cooperation with the audience, in a fun whodunit murder with 12 players. This play will not be ready for October, but we would expect to be able to present it early next year. If you would like to be a cast member (we need 8 guys and 4 gals), please contact either David Bowen (dbowen@sprecherbrewry.com ) or Dick Marcus (414-228-7731 or Dick.Marcus@mve.org) if you would like to offer your thespian efforts. Stay tuned to your Surveyor to come to our first ever theatrical endeavor.
