Another New Master Mason At GW1776
Br. Wollen with his mentor, Dick Marcus, PM
WHITEFISH BAY, WI Taking advantage of a fifth Tuesday in September, the brethren of GW1776 raised a new Master Mason, Br. Terrence Wollen. Present at the meeting was District Lecturer, Frank Mayer who was heard to comment that he always enjoyed the degree work at the George Washington Lodge. Of
course he was given an opportunity to join in and did an excellent job as well. After the special communication, the brethren retired to the dining room and enjoyed the fellowship of stimulating conversation over ice cream and cake.

A Visit by the District Deputy WHITEFISH BAY, WI Worshipful District Deputy Bob Strader joined the brethren of GW1776 at a stated communication on September 15th. He announced upcoming District events as well as carrying greetings from the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin. Brother Strader also discussed the degree competition in Wausau which turns out to be on Mother’s Day weekend. The brethren on the GW1776 degree team decided it would not be possible to make the trip as it would entail staying over for the weekend and no widow’s son should neglect Mom on that special day.

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST Franklin Nuernberger, Worshipful
This will be my last official writing as your Worshipful Master. I hope others have made some connection with a relative with Masonic background. The more you look the more you'll find. Brethren, it has been an honor to serve you as Worshipful Master. I pray you will give as much support to my successor and his officers as you have given me. As I have said in the past, we would like to see more of you sitting on our sidelines. In November, we have elections, and a Thanksgiving dinner. In December, we have our Christmas party where wives and other guests are encouraged to attend.
Master
We have started having meetings at Laurel Oaks as outreach to some of our more elderly members. By the time this is out, we will have had a second meeting. If you know of a Mason who otherwise is unable to attend his lodge, make the effort to bring him to one of these meetings. Over the past six months we have raised six to the sublime degree of Master Mason. In October, we started a new with an EA degree. We are looking forward to additional petitions to continue our growth. Again thank you for your support. May the Great Architect of the Universe be with you, your family, and friends.
Greetings from the West Walt Smith Senior Warden
More Masonic Awareness No public relations agency or advertising campaign will substitute for the personal journey that will establish the presence of Masonry in the public view. Each of us has a responsibility to steward our respected fraternity into the future, calling on our spirit rather than deferring to those of our predecessors. Consider the rough ashlar that hides the natural beauty of the stone within. We must uncover the Mason within us so that we can expose Masonry to the public at large.
Relying on the rough ashlar as a metaphor for the Mason’s journey toward enlightenment, please consider the natural resources dormant in Masonry. From the value of the individual brothers who sit among us to the lodge-centered assets and systems linking us on a national and international level, there lies a wealth of untapped resources. We must uncover these resources for the immediate and long-term good health of our fraternity.

From the Secretary’s Desk
Trustees
Thank you for your confidence in this past year. We have accomplished many things. With elections this November, we will have a new core of officer; let’s support them. It is that time of the year.... dues are due. It seems as if it is a year-round job. Some have received a letter recently, others a dues notice. Please, if possible, send your dues A.S.A.P. Now is a great time to think about Perpetual Membership. A one time fee for life and you help the lodge. Call if you are interested. Along with help from Br. Andy Paradowski and Br. Josh Armstrong, we are on a new program from Grand Lodge called M.O.R.I. This will make communications between me and the Grand Lodge much more efficient. Thanks to all who have helped with this.

My Dear Brothers, Our job as Trustees this past year has been very easy. All our committee chairmen have done their jobs so well as to make ours better. Thanks to all who helped wax the floors and clean the carpet; we are in good shape. Thanks to our maintenance committee. We will have elections November 3, 2009 to elect three Trustees. If you would like to nominate someone, even yourself, please come to the meeting. Our last meeting was October 6th. If you have concerns, please call. Your opinion is valuable! by Terry Johannes This is the third in a series about Masonic Temples no longer being used for their original purpose. These abandoned and reclaimed structures remain memorials to our glorious past. Dedicated to this quest, the author investigates the Lost Temples of Wisconsin. -ed.
Kilbourn Lodge No.3 No other lost temple is seen more but rarely recognized as the Kilbourn Masonic Temple. It is seen by thousands of commuters every day as they pass through the Marquette interchange. The old lodge building overlooks the interchange on 11th street just north of Wells Street. Kilbourn lodge was the third Wisconsin Lodge to be chartered in 1843( Older lodges were Melody Lodge #1 in Milton and Melody Lodge No. 2 in Plattville). At that time it was known as Milwaukee Lodge No. 3 and Byron Kilbourn, one of the three founders of Milwaukee, was elected Master that year. Throughout his life Kilbourn was a major benefactor of Milwaukee Lodge and built them a Temple in 1859 on present day Plankinton Avenue, North of Wisconsin Avenue. The rent was $1 per year. Milwaukee Lodge changed its name to Kilbourn Lodge in 1869. Upon his death in 1870, Byron Kilbourn's estate gave Milwaukee Lodge a 999 year lease on the Temple at $1 per year. For nearly fifty years the Plankinton building was home to Kilbourn Lodge. By 1880 they were the largest Lodge in the state of Wisconsin. Tragedy struck in 1910 when fire destroyed the old Temple. In 1911 the present Kilbourn Masonic Temple was built between Wells Street & Kilbourn Avenue on 11th Street.
Cornerstone showing both building dates.
It was down the street from the Ivanhoe Commandery which stood at 10th & Wisconsin Avenue until it was demolished for the Marquette interchange construction in the 1960's. Kilbourn Lodge occupied this building for the next ninety years until they merged with another lodge. In 2004 the building was sold and plans were announced to turn it into a banquet facility. Today the Kilbourn Masonic Temple sits vacant. The banquet plans have yet to materialize. However "KILBOURN MASONIC TEMPLE" can still be seen along the roof line and the corner stone shows the construction dates of the two Kilbourn Temples Next time you're driving through the Marquette Interchange look to the West before Wells Street and catch a glimpse of Kilbourn Lodge. If you miss it look at the "Stated Communications" page of the Masonic Journal. A drawing of Kilbourn Lodge is used in the heading.

Recent Events At and About the Lodge GW1776 Welcomes Masons from Afar The lodge has been especially blessed this year with many distinguished guests and visitors. Most recently we were visited by Fred Shortreed of San Diego, California, a member of La Mesa Lodge No. 407. Br. Shortreed was in Wisconsin visiting his wife’s family and took advantage of an invitation by his brother-in-law, Senior Deacon Chuck Carroll, to attend the raising of Br. Wollen on September 29. On September 15, the lodge was visited by Br. Marcos Campos, from Sao Paulo, Brazil. He came at the invitation of Chuck Carroll who had been informed that Secretary Dave Haase had received a letter from the Grand Lodge, along with a letter from the Grand Lodge in Brazil. Brother Marcos was thrilled to see how we did some things the same, but much of the ritual was different from that in Brazil. Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, so naturally titles and words are different, as are certain signs.
Brothers Keith, Horace and Tyler chat with their Brazilian brother, Marcos.

District 12 Meeting by Andy Paradowski, PM, AA 12-2
Wisconsin Job’s Daughters’ 50th Anniversary Jamboree
Jamboree 2009 50th Anniversary Fireworks, crafts, sports, Jamboree Jog, dance, hot dog feast and commemorative lanyards, Miss Wisconsin Job’s Daughters Pageant, and the Grand Bethel meeting and installation made up the activity filled weekend as Wisconsin’s Job’s Daughters celebrated their 50th Anniversary in Jamboree 2009. According to Mom Dorothy Cigale, PHQ, RPE the 50th anniversary Jamboree “is etched in the memories of so many as the greatest weekend of Wisconsin Job’s Daughteres. This enthusiasm has given renewed momentum to other future Job’s Daughters activities.” Also in attendance was Most Worshipful Grand Master Craig S. Campbell and his officers and ladies, as well as Worthy Grand Matron Bobbi Jo Oyen.
Nathan Hale Lodge hosted the fall District 12 meeting on Saturday October 3, 2009. Five Brothers from George Washington 1776 Lodge #337 as well as 35 Masons from throughout the district attended. District Deputy Bob Strader presented an ambitious agenda that included updates on M.O.R.I., Schools of Instruction, Lodge Inspections, and the Traveling Gavel as well as group discussions on Communication Modes and styles and Lodge Best Practices. Grand Lecturer Ken Gorgon gave a talk on our Ritual and how quality work distinguishes us. The Right Worshipful Joe Harker, Deputy Grand Master led a discussion about the Lodge Excellence Award and Worshipful Brother Don Hensiak, Junior Grand Steward, led a discussion about Posting and the Ashlar Award. Although the next district meeting is scheduled for March 6 at Palmer Lodge, the assembled brethren of District 12 have found enough value in these meetings to request that they be offered quarterly. Please watch for an announcement of another meeting for the early Spring. All Lodge officers are encouraged to attend the district meetings, but any Mason will find attending to be a worthwhile experience.
WM Frank Nuernberger presents 50 year certificate to Br. Jim Weber.
50 Years of Service On October 6, 2009, Brother Jim Weber was honored for 50 years of Service to the fraternity, having been made a Master Mason in 1959. He was awarded with a 50 year pin, a Grand Master’s pin, certificate, and best of all, a paid up dues card for life!
