New Menus for Light Dinners Reservations Required WHITEFISH BAY, WI Lodge members are looking forward to the new and improved light dinner menus planned by this year’s Junior Warden, Chuck Carroll. Some of the new menu items include: Chicken Cordon Bleu, Spaghetti and Meatballs, Hawaiian Chicken and Baked Tilapia. Back in September, Br. Chuck circulated surveys among the brethren in order to find out what they like and don’t like, or what kind of dietary restrictions, if any, might require special attention. The surveys will become part of a new Junior Warden Planning Guide that Chuck will compile over the year. The survey also addressed the problem of cleanup time. With the dinners starting at 6:30 pm and the meeting starting at 7:30 pm, there was no time for the Stewards and Junior Warden to clean up before the meeting and so they found themselves pulling “KP” after the meeting, often at very late hours.
This year, the dinners will begin at 6:00 pm, and the Stewards will stop serving at 7:00 pm to have time to clean up before the stated meeting. Also, in order to prevent waste or shortage, our Junior Warden is requiring reservations for any that intend to attend the light dinners. To place your reservation, simply call Chuck Carroll at 414-336-4252 or email: sifuchuck@aol.com, no later than the weekend prior to each stated meeting date. Even though the menus have been improved, we are still only asking for a free-will offering to help offset costs. Everyone is encouraged to bring friends or family members, just be sure to let Chuck know how many so that he can make enough. Anyone who might arrive late, between 7:00-7:30 just has to call ahead and a plate will be put aside before cleanup begins. The key to this program’s success is communication. As long as everyone makes reservations and attends, it will work!

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST Walt Smith, Worshipful Master My congratulations to all the new officers for the year of 2010. We look forward to a new year with much anticipation for the many lodge functions and events. I am very excited about this new year as your new Worshipful Master. It is both an honor as well as pleasure to serve and a humbling experience. I am sure we will have a good year, with the continued support of the officers and lodge members. Being Master of George Washington 1776 Lodge No. 337, I will focus on the following: Ê Ê Ê
Strong ritual work Getting new members involved in lodge activities Establish Friends Nights
Thanks to all who elected me to the position of Senior Warden. my recent medical troubles have not let me work out too much detail for the coming year, but I am working on it. We will want to continue the schedule of degree practices. Remember in May there is to be a competition of degree teams on part of the Entered Apprentice Degree. If we want to compete we need to be up on that degree. We also want to be up on degree work to do degrees in our own lodge. We have an EA who will want to move up and one or possibly 2 people who may petition the lodge for degrees in the coming weeks. Please also keep in mind and attend ,if possible, the Installation of Officers on January, 2010.
Ê Programs to attract quality men Ê Visitation between lodges Let’s all work together to achieve these goals. I am extending an open invitation to all lodges, especially those in District 12 to attend our Installation of Officers, Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Silver Spring Masonic Center which is located at 517 East Beaumont Ave, Whitefish Bay, just behind Sendiks Food Market. A light lunch and entertainment will be provided after the installation of officers. Finally, I would like to say to all our members, if you haven’t been to lodge in a while, please come and join us. I am looking forward to meeting with you.
Greetings From the West
Otto Tesch, Senior Warden

by Terry Johannes This is the fourth in a series about Masonic Temples no longer being used for their original purpose. These abandoned and reclaimed structures remain memorials to our glorious past. Dedicated to this quest, the author investigates the Lost Temples of Wisconsin. -ed.
Myron Reed Lodge was formed by a group masons in the Town of North Milwaukee in 1908 and received its charter in 1909. For years they met in a converted boarding house at 33rd and Villard, the current location of the Villard Library. In 1957 Myron Reed Lodge moved into their new Temple on the corner of Sherman & Villard. The Town of Milwaukee was incorporated into the City of Milwaukee in 1958.
Myron Reed Lodge #297, 4300 W. Villard Avenue
Wrought Iron Square & Compasses and Eastern Star emblems can still be seen at the front door.
For years Myron Reed Lodge was active in the neighborhood, provided scholarships to students at Custer High school, and laid claim as" The Friendliest Lodge in North Milwaukee". The Lodge building was sold in 1996 and Myron Reed moved to the McKinley Masonic center in Brookfield. Today true heart Missionary Baptist Church occupies the old Lodge. Wrought Iron Square & Compasses and Eastern Star emblems can still be seen at the front door.

Laying the Corner Stone by Terry Johannes As I research the former Masonic Temples of Wisconsin, I have found references to the ceremony involved when laying the cornerstone of the Temple. This was a big event with reports of up to 2,000 Masons marching from the old meeting place to the site of the new Temple. These parades were often led by a band with Masonic groups such as the Knights Templar, Royal Arch Masons, and the Scottish Rite Bodies represented. What a sight this must have been for the people living on the parade route! I came into possession of a series of photographs showing the Masonic parade and the laying of the cornerstone for James A. Garfield Temple on 27th & Chambers in 1921. The parade started at Garfield's old
In the last issue of The Surveyor, Lost Temples, the following parenthetical was printed: ( Older lodges were Melody Lodge No. 1 in Milton and Melody Lodge No. 2 in Plattville). Deputy Grand Master Joseph B. Harker brought to our attention that Lodge No. 1 was in Mineral Point and that it was named Mineral Point Lodge. He was indeed correct in the location, however, Mineral Point Lodge No. 1 was originally called Melody Lodge No. 1 and only changed its name when Melody Lodge No. 2 was formed. –ed.
meeting place at St. Paul's Mission Hall on 12th & Center streets (The building still stands across from North Division High School). The parade marched up Center to 27th and then four blocks north to Chambers Street. The Church in the background of many of the pictures still stands at 26th & Center. Little else in these photos remains today.

Recent Events At and About the Lodge Chili Today Hot Tamale!
Chuck Carroll fills in for Otto Tesch at the JW Chili Cookoff
By Barb Carroll The Henry Palmer Lodge challenged other area lodges to a Jr. Warden Chili Cook Off held on November 7, 2009. As Otto Tesch was incapacitated at the time, my husband, Chuck Carroll took up the gauntlet with Otto’s blessing. Chuck never does anything halfway; he puts everything he has into whatever he does. Since the rules stated that more than one kind of chili could be entered, he chose to make three. The first was Green Chili made with pork, green chili peppers and tomatillos, which are kind of like green tomatoes in a papery husk. Next was LBJ’s Pedernales River Chili, a beef chili developed by Lady Bird Johnson. The showcase was his own Texas Red Chili, which was inspired by the San Antonio Chili Queens who cooked their chili all day over open campfires and served it to hungry military personnel at the end of their shifts. Chuck’s Texas Red Chili has both beef and pork and is moderately hot due to the liberal use of spices, herbs, onions, and of course peppers. Real Texas chili never has beans. Beans are considered a side dish or accompaniment to the chili. Chuck learned his chilimaking skills from his father who entered and won several Texas chili cook offs! Our kitchen was transformed to “chili central” for three days prior to the cook off as recipes were refined, ingredients were gathered, and pots large enough to hold five gallons of chili were sought out, with little success. The activity spilled over into the dining room where Chuck put together an educational and colorful display including the history of chili making, pictures of Chili Queens, quotes about chili, samples of various herbs, spices and peppers used to make chili, and an authentic Chili Queen’s dress. On the day of the cook off, with Keith Sergeant’s help, Chuck prepared his Texas Red Chili at GW Lodge, where he could find an over-size pot and a stove large enough to accommodate his special recipe. The other
two chilis he made in small two-gallon batches at home. They transported the chilis and display to Henry Palmer Lodge to compete with several other chili afficionados. The various kinds of chili in competition were as diverse and distinct as those who offered them. I was privileged to sample some excellent offerings. At the risk of sounding biased, however, I truly believe Chuck’s Texas Red Chili was the finest in the cook off. It was meaty, thick and hot, but not too hot as to mask the good balance of flavors. The Chili Cook Off sponsored by the Henry Palmer Lodge was a wonderful event which was wellattended by many people associated with lodges throughout Milwaukee County and beyond. In the end, Chuck only lost by four votes. As this was a “People’s Choice” competition, the lodge with the most people attending was the most likely to win. Next year, let’s all go out to support George Washington Lodge at the Henry Palmer Lodge Chili Cook Off.
Masonic Education Night Big Hit WHITEFISH BAY, WI Friday, November13th marked the second Masonic Education Night at GW1776 lodge. The evening started with ice cream and caramel apple blossoms. GW1776 Lodge To Host Joint Breakfast With Prince Hall by Mark Truesdell Over the years we've developed a sense of the possibilities that Prince Hall and WI Grand Masons may accomplish together and we are calling on all interested Brothers and Lodges to attend breakfast on Saturday, January 9th at 8:00 AM for a discussion. The breakfast is informal but adherence to the Masonic protocol of no politics is important. For the past 5-6 years representatives from George Washington, Aurora and Prince Hall and other area Lodges have met for informal breakfast meetings at local restaurants. The purpose has been to use our bond as Masons to foster better communications within our often divided community. We've learned a lot from each other and our
