WHITEFISH BAY, WI On Friday evening, February 12, 2010, GW1776 opened its doors to Job’s Daughters, Bethel 6 of Lake Lodge. Led by Honored Queen and Grand Bethel Junior Princess Erin Athy and her entourage, Senior Princess Megan Bertram and Junior Princess Samantha Campagna, the officers of Bethel 6 conducted the installation of Choir member Katie Zalinski and the initiation of two new members. Once seated in their places, the girls waited patiently while Chaplain Colleen Athy led first-time attendees in an oath of secrecy. The initiation of new members went very smoothly. The various officers involved demonstrated skillful command of their parts, excelling in memory work while proud parents and visitors watched from the sidelines. (Continued on Page 7 )

Lion Dance Saturday, February 6th. Three Lion Dances and a Kung Fu Demonstration were performed by the world-renowned Whitefish Bay Kung Fu Club, led by GW1776 Junior Warden Chuck Carroll. The group began with a traditional Lion Dance known as “The Moon and Seven Stars,” which portrays the birth of the spirit of the Lion, a heaven-sent beneficent creature who comes to earth through the Big Dipper and crosses the Milky Way to consume the moon and a star. M ESSAGE FROM THE E AST

Walt Smith, Worshipful Master Our lodge is made up of many different personalities and brothers from all walks of life. W e all bring many talents and abilities to our lodge. This represents most lodges in the Masonic Fraternity. Let’s look at the meaning of personality. The Merriam-W ebster Dictionary defines it as “the collection of emotional and behavioral traits that characterize a person.” Having so many different personality types, we must learn to work with each other to achieve the goals we set for our lodge. W e must respect each other’s opinions and rely on good judgement when dealing with the brothers of our lodge. In spite of our differences, we maintain our ties to each other.

Drinks at 6pm followed by dinner and lively conversation. All are welcome at Dinner Club including ladies, friends and family. Please RSVP by the Thursday before each Dinner Club meeting. Dick Paradowski at 262-782-8835.

THE SURVEYOR

Fortunately, we have many talented members who, when asked, will step up and take charge of the many tasks we face. Being ready to help in the case of a brother’s illness or inability to serve in his officer’s chair is paramount. This is an important step if we are to continue to function as a lodge. I would like to thank all the officers who, when asked, were willing to step up to new chairs. This is the type of team work that fosters good attitudes and the well-being of our lodge. In spite of recent set-backs we will surely move ahead and do an outstanding job. All this is possible with your continued support for this year. Many lodges look to us with great respect for all that we are able to accomplish. At the recent Friends Night, our Junior Grand Steward, Don Hensiak, said our lodge “has a nice balance of social activities and ritual work.” W hat a nice acknowledgment for our lodge. Let’s continue to put forth the effort needed to achieve the best that we can for our up-coming events. W e must all remember that a lodge is only as good as we, as brothers, can make it.

by Terry Johannes This is the fifth in a series about Masonic Tem ples no longer being used for their original purpose. These abandoned and reclaim ed structures rem ain memorials to our glorious past. Dedicated to this quest, the author investigates the Lost Tem ples of Wisconsin. -ed. North Shore Masonic Center, 7800 N. Green Bay Ave., Glendale, Wisconsin Milwaukee and James Hayes Lodges had met at James A. Garfield temple for many years when they decided to build their own temple in 1964. The two lodges were able to purchase an odd sized lot in Glendale that was bordered by Milwaukee and River Hills. At the time of purchase, the lot was considered undesirable because of its pie shape and as a result was "priced right" Ground was broken and the corner stone was laid in 1964. The lodges moved into their new Temple in 1965. The new Temple was built in tan brick and trimmed in black granite with Square and Compasses facing Green Bay Avenue. The symbol of Masonry quickly became a landmark to all driving North on Green Bay Road. The only windows were facing the parking lot and were in the common areas. The first floor consisted of the main lodge room, posting rooms and a Masters Board meeting room. Downstairs was divided into large and small dining rooms By 1969 the neighborhood had changed around Garfield Temple at 27th & Chambers. The members decided to sell the

Joint Lodge Cornerstone

old Lodge building and buy 1/3rd interest in the Milwaukee-Hayes Temple and it was renamed Milwaukee - Hayes - Garfield temple. Along with Garfield Lodge came Garfield Chapter RAM, Milwaukee Chapter DeMolay, Eastern Star, and Jobs Daughters. In 1982 Harmony Lodge, which met at Silver Spring Masonic Temple merged with Milwaukee Lodge to form Milwaukee-Harmony Lodge. Around the same time Hiram Sawyer Lodge merged with Hayes Lodge Eventually the building was re-named the North Shore Masonic Center. W ith aging members, the three lodges decided to install an elevator in the late 1980's. W hat seemed like a good idea at the time, this expensive project eventually bankrupted Garfield lodge and they were forced to disband by the late 90's. Milwaukee-Harmony and Hayes lodges decided to put the building up for sale. The not so old Temple was sold to the Mandel Group in 2004 and was slated for demolition to make way for a condominium complex. Slow sales and a recession ended the condominium project. The Mandel

Group put the property up for sale in September 2009. Today, the Milwaukee - Hayes Garfield Temple sits empty and is slowly falling into ruin. After selling the building Hayes now meets at the Humphrey Scottish Rite Center and Milwaukee-Harmony meets at the Sheridan on Brown Deer Road. Neighbors told me that the roof leaks and the basement has standing water. The day I stopped to take pictures maintenance workers had been clearing water-damaged furniture, carpeting and other debris. Though the outside still looks good, the Temple is a complete wreck inside and demolition will be its eventual fate. George W ashington Lodge has several connections to the Milwaukee Hayes - Garfield Temple. Bro. Jim Roberts is Past Master of Sawyer lodge and your Temple hunter was raised in this building in 1983. The most visible connection is the landmark Square & Compasses that Bro. Dave Haase saved from MHG Temple that now can be seen on the East side of our Lodge building.

Recent Events At and About the Lodge

2010 GW1776 Officers Installed WHITEFISH BAY, WI Saturday, January 16, the 2010 officers of George Washington 1776 were installed in what District 12 Deputy Bob Strader called, “a perfect installation.” The morning event started with an impressive flag presentation by Specialist 4th Class, Br. Joe Fahrenkopf, flanked by Frank Nuernberger, PM and Lost Temples contributor, Terry Johannes. Installing Marshall Mark Truesdell, PM and Installing Master Andy Paradowski, PM demonstrated flawless skills as they installed this year’s officers. Brethren of the lodge were happy to see Br. Tony Busalacchi, PM who has been absent from the lodge meetings this past year due to

his exemplary involvement as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee. His devotion to the men and women of our Armed Forces has been an inspiration and fine example for all. Also attending, Br. Dave Reber, PM led the assembly in singing the National Anthem and also sang a moving solo version of the Lord’s Prayer while kneeling at the alter. A delicious brunch was served afterwards in the lodge dining hall, where a lively crowd gathered to enjoy one another’s company. All in all, it was a fine event which will be remembered in years to come.

CHINESE NEW YEAR (Continued from Page 1 ) The Whitefish Bay Kung Fu Club, led by Brother Chuck Carroll, the sifu or teacher of the club, performed a lion dance at Three Pillars Senior Living Communities in Dousman on February 6 to celebrate Chinese New Year. The audience of about 80 residents and guests enthusiastically applauded the performance. Lion dances are traditionally performed by kung fu practitioners as a show of strength, agility and stamina. Since the lion bestows good luck on all in attendance, lion dances are a part of many celebrations, especially the

Chinese New Year, birthdays, weddings, store openings, and even funerals. The lion must solve a puzzle or chang in order to get to the lettuce or choi in which the payment or lei see is hidden. The lion must be paid or no luck will be given. The club received a payment of $250 for the performance, but they promptly returned a check for the same amount to Three Pillars to benefit special programs for the seniors in residence.

As it is written in the Book of Job, “And in all the land were no women found so fair as the Daughters of Job.” If you had seen them at our lodge that night, you would have agreed that indeed, there are none fairer than these.
