SAN DIEGO As most everyone in lodge knows I'm a member of the US Army Reserves and am on occasion called to do missions around the country to facilitate deploying units. In late February I was sent on a mission to Concord, CA (near San Francisco) to assist in the rehabilitation of an ammo depot there. After a few weeks of hard work, the work slackened a little and we had time in the evenings for ourselves. Realizing from my calendar that our stated meeting was coming up I thought to look for a local lodge, thinking perhaps they may be meeting before we left to return to Wisconsin. (Continued Page 5)

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST
Worshipful Master I would like to welcome the officers and brethren of George Washington 1776 Lodge back from our summer break when the lodge was dark during July and August. In the upcoming months of September and October we have many events to fill our calendar. At our first stated meeting we will be honoring a brother mason for his 50 years of membership in the Masonic Fraternity. His name is Albert Krueger; let’s give him a nice welcome to our lodge. Looking back at our Lodge picnic in July, I believe we were very successful and everyone enjoyed the day. Thanks to all the officers and brethren who helped with the picnic. I’m looking forward to this fall and know we will have a very successful and challenging time. By working together we can achieve many things. Let’s keep working to become the best we can be. See you this Fall so we can renew our brotherly friendships.
Welcome back to a very active second half of 2010. Many of you received notice of many dates of activities. I hope you can make some of the dates. We have had some bookkeeping this Summer. Our Assistant Secretary, Br. Andy Paradowski, PM, and I have met to help in running the lodge more efficiently. As we start the Fall, we have an edict from Grand Lodge and the Annual Communication that as of January 1, 2011, the per capita tax will go up from $31 to $37 which will raise our dues to $71. Be prepared for the change. We have a few of our brothers who have not paid their 2010 dues. We will be sending a note out. To those who have not paid, if you do not have a yellow 2010 dues card, please call or send a note in the mail. If you have a concern about your dues, a perpurla membership is available through Grand Lodge. If you are interested, please call. Dave Haase, PM Secretary

We would like to have more members come to our meetings. JB is also hoping to do more work in the craft, not only in opening and closing, but if possible the degrees. Our next meetings will be October 14, & December 9. We thank the GW1776 Trustees, especially the maintenance committee and the past masters for cleaning and disinfecting the lodge lower level. This is the sixth in a series about Masonic Temples no longer being used for their original purpose. These abandoned and reclaimed structures remain memorials to our glorious past. Dedicated to this quest, the author investigates the Lost Temples of Wisconsin. -ed.
Lake Lodge No.189, 2535 S. Kinnickinnic Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Lake Lodge had its early beginnings at the Bay View Rolling Mills. Experienced Immigrants from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland worked as "Puddlers" at the Rolling Mills. Puddling is the process of turning pig iron into cast iron. Some of these workers were Freemasons or members of other lodges throughout the city. In 1872 Grand Master Henry L. Palmer issued dispensation and the first meeting was held at Puddlers Hall. In 1873 the Grand Lodge issued a Charter to Lake Lodge #189. Lake Lodge started with twenty-two

members and twelve more that demitted from Excelsior Lodge. By 1907 the members had saved enough money to build the Temple that still stands today. The Puddlers went on to strike for the forty-hour workweek in the 1880's at the Bay View Rolling Mills. The strike ended badly for the workers with a number of them being shot and killed by the Wisconsin Militia. When it was over, the Bay View Rolling Mills strike was one of the deadliest strikes in United States history. I find it amazing that this important moment in history also has a Masonic connection. Lake Lodge occupied the Kinnickinnic Ave. building until it moved to its new location on E. Howard Ave. in 1965. Today the old Temple is occupied by a Chinese restaurant on the ground floor, and the "Bay View Brew House" which proudly serves Sprecher products according to their sign, on the main floor. The only clue to its Masonic past is an ornate cornerstone with the year"1907" cast on it. Otherwise, no Masonic symbolism remains. Thanks to Bro. Dave Bowen for the lead on this Temple. He told me about it when discussing the "Lost Temple" Series with me.

Junior Steward.... (Continued from page 1)
The Grand Lodge of California's website quickly revealed that there was a lodge meeting that very evening not more than 15 minutes from where I was staying. After requesting permission from my Platoon Sergeant, who readily agreed, I attempted to contact the Brothers. After emailing their Secretary I quickly received a phone call and was encouraged to attend their lodge. The Brothers of Diablo Valley No.448 F & A M welcomed me with great warmth and hospitality. I attended the meeting, which happened to be their annual inspection from their Grand Lodge representative, very similar to our District Deputy's visit. I had an opportunity to ask a few questions about Masonry in California and they, in turn, inquired about how things were in Wisconsin. We discussed relations with Prince Hall and I explained our "Breakfast Club" that we do each month. The Brothers there were very impressed and expressed interest in reaching out to their Prince Hall Brethren as well. I have to say, being raised not yet a year ago this was an incredible demonstration to me of how strong our obligations and Brotherhood truly are. Not only was I greeted with fellowship and kindness but numerous offers of assistance should it be necessary and invitations to come to their homes for dinner, meet their families, attend other Masonic functions. I can not say how comforting my visit was with about a week left in what was a very frustrating and trying mission. I can only imagine what comfort our Brothers of the past and present have taken in Military Lodges while participating in numerous campaigns
throughout history. My great thanks and appreciation to Bro. Tom Slivinski WM, Bro. Steven Glazier, PM Senior Deacon, Bro. Martin Carlson PM Secretary and all the Brothers at Diablo Valley No. 448 for their hospitality, their fellowship and for demonstrating unequivocally the strength and reach of our Brotherhood.
Honor Mason Night Hosted by Bethel 6 at GW1776 Lodge WHITEFISH BAY The fourth and final meeting of Bethel 6 at GW1776 Lodge, before returning to Lake Lodge, was Honor Masons Night. Masons from lodges throughout SE Wisconsin attended the light supper and special program hosted by the Daughters of Bethel 6. According to Honored Queen, Erin Athey, it was “the most Masons we ever had at Honor Masons Night in the history of Bethel 6!” Officers of the Bethel selected Masons to sit with them during the meeting and further honored them by forming the square and compasses with blue ribbon and presented each Mason present with a

gift bag containing a mason jar mug, pen, and packet of forget-me-not seeds. At the end of the meeting, HQ Erin Athey presented a 49 star banner with an engraved brass plaque to GW1776 in appreciation for support during their time of need. JW Chuck Carroll accepted the award on behalf of the lodge and WM Walt Smith who could not be there.

by Chuck Carroll At the first sight of the girls of Bethel 6 and their families filling the halls and rooms of the Silver Spring Masonic Center, I said to myself, “We need one of these!” And when I was called up at the last meeting of Bethel 6 at our lodge, I expressed my feelings in their tradition of stating a “sunshine” and a “rain,” telling our guests that my rain was that they were leaving us to return to their home lodge. But then I told them that I had a sunshine, which was that I had dedicated myself to the task of re-instating Bethel 13 at GW1776 Lodge. That was Friday, March 26th, and on the following Monday Barb and I met with Bethel 6's Dorothy and Leo Cigale, Nancy Saggio, and Judie Hurst to lay the foundation for the return of Bethel 13. Dorothy and Leo are Past Bethel Guardian and Past Associate Guardian of Bethel 6, Nancy Saggio is a Past Grand Guardian, and Judie Hurst was Vice Grand Guardian at the time of that first meeting, but is currently Grand Guardian. The first meeting was an introduction to Job’s Daughters for me and Barb and it was overwhelming. My first task was to assemble a Bethel Guardian Council. Barb told me that our church financial secretary happened to be a Past Honored Queen of Bethel 72 in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. After some cajoling, she consented to become our Guardian Treasurer. Barb volunteered as Guardian Secretary and I took the job of Associate Bethel Guardian. Dorothy Cigale had already offered her talents as Director of Epochs which left us needing only one position, the most important one, Bethel Guardian. Luckily, Judy Paradowski, Brother Dick’s wife and Andy’s mom volunteered for the job! The fact that she was also a Past Grand Guardian
boosted my confidence that we were indeed on the right track. Then the kidney stones struck! I lost two months battling pain and pain killers, followed by pancreatitis and a gall bladder operation, set-backs for which I wasn’t prepared. Nevertheless, we have since had a successful council meeti ng a nd ar e pl anni ng promotional events to recruit members for the new Bethel. We invite everyone to step up and help us in our recruiting efforts as we prepare for this exciting new aspect of Masonry at George Washington 1776.
Tuesday, May 4th GW1776 hosted the annual Ladies at the Table Dinner, honoring Ms. Joan Brenk of Whitefish Bay, our recipient of the George Washington 1776 Woman of the Year award. Although many lodge brothers had made other plans and did not attend, there were enough brothers from other lodges to fill the seats and make it a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable evening. The honoree, Ms. Brenk, is a graduate of Shorewood High School with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Milwaukee State Teachers College and a graduate degree in Administrative Leadership from UWM. She has been Senior Citizen Programmer for the Whitefish Bay School District Recreation Department since 1984 and has taught for the Shorewood Opportunity School and Shorewood MATC Center and was the
Supervisor for the Shorewood and Whitefish Bay MATC Centers. Her dedication and service in the community includes: member of Old St. Mary Parish, St. Anne Society, Old St. Mary Cathedral Conference of St. Vincent De Paul; volunteer for the Badger Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired; volunteer for Historic Milwaukee Annual Spaces and Traces Tour; donor & luncheon volunteer for Habitat for Humanity; member, Milwaukee County Historical Society, Shorewood Historical Society, Friends of the Whitefish Bay Library; and Secretary and Chair of the Annual Celebration of the Athletes Dinner for the Wisconsin Senior Olympics.

by Dave Haase WHITEFISH BAY – It was Thursday, July 22nd in the evening. By the time I arrived at the lodge we had gotten 8-10 inches of rain in a matter of two to three hours. In front of the lodge, Beaumont Avenue was a three foot deep raging river. I had come there from my barber shop where the maintenance committee chair, Bob Batchelder and I had been assessing the damage in my basement which consisted of knee-deep sewer water. We decided that we should also check on the lodge and when we went into the lodge we discovered the lower level was submerged in over 5 inches of water with more flowing in from the sewer backup. We thought the sump-pumps were either off or broken, but discovered they were both running full tilt but couldn’t keep up with the deluge. By then we realized there was nothing we could do until the water stopped coming in, so we went across the street to have “refreshments” and figure out a plan. The next morning, Br. Bob and his lady, Nancy mopped up the filthy water and began the task of drying out the lower level. The cleanup continued through Saturday and into Sunday. Sunday was supposed to be a fund-raiser run by the Past Masters, but after a call to Past Master President Andy Paradowski, it was decided to cancel the fund raiser and make it a major cleanup day. Everyone pulled together, the past masters, trustees, members of Aurora Lodge, North Shore Kenwood Chapter and North Shore Council, and last but not least, the brethren of GW1776. All the carpet has been removed and the floors cleaned and disinfected along with microbial odor killer applied. The same treatment was used on the tables, chairs, cabinets, files, doors and other furniture. We worked as a team and we got it done. Br. Bob is continuing to clean the baseboard heaters to make sure there is no more bacteria anywhere. Back in the Spring of this year, Grand Lodge required all lodges to get a blanket insurance policy from Grand Lodge. Two things were lacking that we know of. First is a rider for lodge officers, and second, there is nothing in the policy covering sewer backup or flooding. Which means that with all the damage and loss, we essentially have no insurance. Chuck Roeder is in communication with Grand Lodge to rectify the situation for the future. In response to the flood, the Trustees will hold a joint meeting on Wednesday, September 22nd at 6:30PM. On the agenda will be a wrap-up of the flood,

its cost and how to pay for it. It has been brought up to have a fund raiser to defray the costs, maybe a district-wide table lodge. We as the Silver Spring Masonic Center will discuss this among other ideas. Please come, one and all and feel free to suggest topics to add to the agenda. Please get your suggestions to me by September 19th in order to get them on the agenda by the 22nd. We will welcome any donation toward the repair of our lodge. Send all donations to the lodge address, marked and noted for Flood Damage. Thank you in advance. This Summer our committee has been very busy with carpet cleaning as well as dealing with the flood. If you know any of the committee members, thank them for their hard work. It is one of the reasons we have always had one of the best lodges. If you have any concerns or suggestions for the betterment of the lodge, please contact me or any other trustee. We are always open to any and all ideas.
