PATIENT TRAVEL
I would like to thank all the people who have brought me the doctor’s notes.
Notes:
Bed Bugs:
I need all the doctor’s notes back from everyone who goes away for Medical appointments please and thank you. It needs to be signed by your doctor’s office, plus it shows me your next appointment on there.
Off-reserve Members:
I’m asking everyone who is off reserve to please be honest with me if you are living off reserve, if so I can do my best to help you. Send out your paper for travel. I have been getting a lot of people telling me they are living on reserve and I find out later they are living in town. I got a news letter from Sacred Wolf and it says on this paper that Violet Alfred also helps with patient travel for off-reserve her number is 902-0552 if you would like her to help you out. I know this must be getting on everyone’s mind but I have to keep reminding you because I am not getting those back. It is needed for audit purposes. Again, travel will not be covered if your child has an appointment with the dentist here or Alert Bay. They need to say why they are unable to do your child. I’m not doing this to be mean I’m only following Medical Services policies. When our members have moved off reserve you will have to wait at least a month before I am able to do travel for you. I really don’t want to start putting your meals back on hotel, but I will have to if appts aren’t kept.
I also want to mention to everyone not to be ashamed if you have bed bugs in your home. I just want to share with you all I had it in my house and no kidding I had to buy at least 8-10 cans of raid to try and get rid of it. This does not mean you are dirty at all. I just want you to know if you call us I know Victor Walkus & Robert will do their best to get fumigation done at your home. We all need to think about our young children so they don’t get all these bites from those things. No kidding I had lots in my bed room and now I get really paranoid when I see one. So I just wanted to mention to you all who may have that in your home not to feel ashamed about this.
Bunny Away: I will be away on April 25 & 26 for medical appointment for myself. Just want to let you know ahead of time. I also will be away on March 30th using some OT I really don’t want to miss out on my OT so I need to use it.
Cancellations: And once again if you are not going to your appointment/s. you must return your travel and to make sure you cancel your hotel, or you will be billed for that night.
Elders’ Escorts:
We are still in need of escorts for our Elders if you are interested please call Christy at front desk. You also will need a reliable vehicle. When taking them to their appointments you must stay with them until they are done. Please leave your name and phone number so we can get in touch with you. PAGE 4

GUARDIAN WATCHMAN UPDATE We are looking forward to another season of being the eyes and ears for our Nation out on the water and lands of the Traditional Territories. We are steadily gaining knowledge and experience that will help us to perform our jobs and continue to give us a growing respect with all those that we meet. This year’s crew is still to be finalized but we know that with the success of our Junior Guardians program from last summer that we are hoping to run the same program this year. Our focus this year will be gaining more knowledge of our territories. We hope to work closely with our Elders to gain their knowledge and wisdom to guide us on our return to the land. We would like to have a protocol with our Elders that will assure them when we are out documenting the lands this information will stay only with our Nations. We would like to be able to go to sacred places and document their current condition and use this information as a “baseline” where we will return regularly to monitor them. We also hope that we can bring Elders and community members with us on some trips.
For sale Kingcome Wolf Track suits $85.00 for a suit. Thank you! See me at the Health & Family Services office
We are excited to get back out on the water but before we do that we will be having a number of meetings with different government agencies to find out what it is that they will be inspecting and patrolling for. We will look at what their objectives are in comparison to what our objectives are and make a season plan for inspections. We will continue to work closely with the fisheries program to help them with some of their transportation and logistical opportunities.

COLLEEN HEMPHILL CHIEF NEGOTIATOR
Treaty Negotiations for the GN involve many potential areas of law making and jurisdiction over our affairs. As we prepare for the future we also have an opportunity through treaty negotiations to address interests and opportunities that are presented now. One very important area is Culture, Heritage and language preservation. The GN School Culture Preservation Program has been strongly supported by the GN Treaty Office in the past, also the Elders Center and Elder Coordinator position.
DEAN WILSON REJOINS THE GN TEAM!
Greetings to everyone, it's good to be home again! I am working for the band again, now as the new Director of Child & Family Services. Although I am not doing work with clients, I am part of a team with Eleanor, Laura, Maggie, Cathy, Malong & Willie. I am leading our team as we work on three main goals for this year:
Our leaders have said that what is done in Treaty Negotiations must be based on a strong foundation of our culture and heritage as taught by our Elders. To this end we have researched to find collections of carvings, artifacts, and other objects including ceremonial blankets and aprons that may be located at museums, private collections or other areas as identified. One day we want to build our own
1. We are reviewing how we need to improve services to support people in the community. We want to ensure that we are being effective and want to change anything we need to improve our services. We have already begun this part of the work.
Cultural Center to display the incredible carvings, paintings, regalia and other material items created by our ancestors. We want our young people to have an opportunity to see first hand, the amazing artistic creations their forefathers/ mothers did.
2. After the review is done we want to develop a plan to get input from the community about the best ways to work. We want to ensure that we are using Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw values when we act as helpers, so we would like to talk to the community about what those values are and how to use them.
One Museum that has been cooperating and working with us is the Museum of Anthropology at UBC where more than 200 treasures are carefully stored and displayed. Recently we met with the curators to talk about the possibility of our Elders to visit the museum to privately view collections of the GN Nations. It has been agreed that this visit will happen. Last week, the Museum invited a ‘Nakwaxda’xw Elder residing in Burnaby to view the work of his grandfather, father and collections once owned by his parents. Henry Seaweed was given a private viewing. In the fairly near future we will take more Elders who are able to travel to view the collection at University of B.C. Arrangements are under way to sort out the logistics of transportation and accommodation so that the trip will be as comfortable as is possible for those who wishing to attend.

3. We want to improve our working relationship with the Ministry for Children & Family Development so that we can do better work with our families and work to ensure children from here are always connected to family, community and culture. I look forward to working with our team and the community as we work to provide the best services possible.

floating structure that we are hoping to tie up to the summer floats at the Seagate wharf. I encourage all artists to contact Gary or myself about getting your pieces for sale in this great location. We are looking for any and all high quality handmade art from cedar weaving to jewelry; carvings and paintings, if you’ve made it and want to sell it let’s talk! I am also looking for some help to operate this venture for the summer, if you have interest in this please contact me.
ECDEV UPDATE Ec Dev Corporation Hello from the ecdev department!! Sorry it has been a while since my last update…There is quite a bit happening right now within economic development, I am currently finalizing some agreements with an accounting firm that Chief and Council have asked me to work with, making sure in our agreement letter that all of the work that is required to have a functioning and long term Economic Development corporation are in place. One major item coming out of this work is how much the accountants can do and how much a lawyer has to do. I am being cautious in these discussions so that I can gather as much information to present to our decision makers. With that all said it is looking like the work of creating our ecdev corp. should begin within the next few weeks. I will give you regular updates about the process as we move along.
Water Taxi
Nakwakto Rapids Tours Another project that is getting off the ground is our Nakwakto Rapids Tours. We are working closely with an online marketing firm that is going to help us present our tour to the world through the computer. This company will work with us to build capacity so that our band employees can do most of the updating. The boat is getting some final “touches” put on it (finishing the new bathroom, putting in a state of the art audio and visual package, as well as spring maintenance) and should be ready to go in the next few weeks.
Art Needed! Another project that is happening right now is an arts project that I am working very closely with Gary Walkus to make happen. Gary is working with the cultural group artists to finish some pieces of art so that we can sell them! The artists are creating beautiful pieces that we will be selling in our floating artists “shack”. This is a PAGE 7
GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS
I have also been working closely with one of the aquaculture companies over the last few months on taking over the water taxi runs that traverse through the homelands. I am happy to say that we are in the final negotiations of this deal. If we do not run into any major obstacles we should have a deal that will see us having a regular 2 day a week run to do crew changes as well as resupplies. This type of deal is crucial to supporting our vessel. If we are successful at the operation of this run we may have to look at acquiring another vessel and expanding our water taxi crew. Please do not think that this is happening right away! We must be able to successfully deliver our services every time before we can look at expanding. I believe with a great training plan and a mentorship program we will be able to achieve the highest standards of service and safe operation. There are other initiatives in the very early stages that have great potential, as we work these ideas through and it looks like we may have the opportunity for success I will keep you informed. I will be having an open house soon to talk about the projects mentioned in this update. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the above projects please contact me.
