FUNERAL POLICY 1. OBJECTIVE 1.1 To provide adequate financial assistance for burial costs through benefits payable to members.

2. POLICIES 2.1 Eligibility Deceased Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nation (GNN) Member as identified on the Indian Registry as administered through Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) and/or the First Nation through a Membership Code in effect at such time and living on reserve.

2.2 Allocation Up to a maximum of $7,500.00 per deceased GNN member and $12,000.00 for a GNN Elder. Next of Kin or Estate Trustee may apply for funds associated with a GNN member, funeral expenses capped at: Community Member      

2.3 Process for Requesting Funds Next of Kin or Estate Trustee must submit a written request and the appropriate application form as attached to this policy as Schedule A, as well as original documents and receipts requesting access to funeral funding under this policy to the Band Manager for approval, processing and disbursement of funds.

2.4 Funeral Coverage Typical services and expenditures which are eligible but not limited to for coverage would include:

Funeral Services: o Funeral home services o Embalming o Casket o Urn o Cremation o Clergy or officiate (includes Traditional) o Transportation of remains o Medical certificate of death o Registration of death certificate o Burial or cremation permit

2.5 Disbursement of Funds: The funeral costs and associated costs upon approval of the application to be paid directly to the Funeral Home providing the services or to the Applicant if the costs owing to the Funeral Home have been paid. A portfolio of Council members will coordinate with the families the application of the policy.

2.6 Funeral Policy Limitations:   

 

Policy not applicable to non-members. Disbursement not to exceed $7,500 per deceased member, or $12,000.00 for an Elder Funds will not be disbursed without required documentation, authorization and approval of the First Nation. The First Nation will issue purchase orders for 2.2 Allocation of Funeral Expenses. Funds for this Policy are subject to allocations through the annual Operating Budget as approved by Chief and Council. This Policy supersedes all other such policies as administered by the First Nation as at the effective date and shall remain in effect until such time as notified by the First Nation.

FUNERAL POLICY GUIDELINE AND APPLICATION The purpose of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nation Funeral Policy is to assist member families with the costs of funeral expenses and arrangements for deceased members. It is the policy of the GNN to provide benefits of up to $7,500.00 per deceased member upon approved application. A death in any family is difficult to deal with and the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nation, has endeavored to provide a benefit which realistically reflects the costs associated with funeral arrangements.

PROCEDURES: 1. The Estate Trustee or Next of Kin, may apply for payment of funeral costs and associated costs as outlined in GNN’s Funeral Policy to a maximum of $7,500.00 per deceased member. If the deceased member had a Will, a Notarial Copy of the Will shall be provided to GNN in support of the application for reimbursement of expenses. 2. An original copy of the death certificate will be required. 3. A copy of the deceased member’s status card and a letter of confirmation of membership status. 4. Any and all Receipts or invoices for funeral services to be provided with the application to the Funeral Policy Administrator. 5. The Band applies for $2,500.00 to assist with funeral costs; or, if the Band Member applies for the $2,500.00, it will be deducted from the funeral costs in 2.2.
