Yo Wiksas? I have updated the Elder’s May Calendar. I know some may have misplaced theirs that were delivered last week. That is ok. It is a long weekend this weekend. Offices will be closed on Monday May 22 for Victoria Day. On Tuesday we will head to Quatsino to have lunch with the Elders. Please be here at 11:45am if you would like to go. It will be fun. Elder’s Mother’s Day celebration on Monday May 15 was a hit. We had 14 ladies come on out and enjoy the afternoon. We had lunch, a yummy dessert and then did some therapeutic colouring. The Ladies all got to take home their colouring books and pencils to enjoy at home.
I have sent off the Registration cheque to BC Elders Communication centre in Campbell River. Everyone that was signed up is now paid for to attend the 2017 BC Elder’s Gathering. Please remember that the Conference is in Campbell River, but we will be staying in Nanaimo. There were no available hotels with enough room for such a large group. The GNN Elder’s Council has been meeting on a regular basis and have been discussing everything that comes to their table as humbly and as neutral as possible. Everything that has been discussed and decided, has been by them as a Elder’s Council. If you have any questions or concerns to bring up with them, please feel free to call the Elder’s Centre and request that this be brought up in the next meeting, (250) 949-7406. Gilakalsa I have some pictures for your enjoyment.
Cathy Swain took a bunch of photos, as did I. I will have those printed off for you that were there, next week. Kwalilas Hotel Grand opening was a hit. It was such a joy to be able to be there and witness. A job well done to all of those that had part in planning such a big event.

Logo contest for Indigenous, Métis & Inuit Youth under 30 living on Vancouver Island
Please circulate to your connections Logo Design Competition – Ignite Your Spirit The Representative for Children and Youth is searching for a unique logo for this year’s Ignite Your Spirit Indigenous Youth Forum. The successful logo will be used on all items related to Ignite Your Spirit including promotional materials, reports and give - away items. Ignite Your Spirit seeks to amplify the voices of Indigenous young people in B.C. through youth-led forums where they are able to share their needs, experiences and ideas for improving the child-serving system within a safe and supportive environment. The upcoming Ignite Your Spirit event will be hosted on Vancouver Island for Indigenous youth in care and in out- of- care options. Ignite Your Spirit is about sparking a sense of strength and connection. It is about taking a match and starting a fire within a person and helping that person to grow their flame into something magnificent. The logo should represent a resurgence of culture and history in the youth of Indigenous peoples, something we are encouraging by helping youth to reclaim their spirit through knowledge and exploration of who they are. Details: The competition is open to First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth under the age of 30 residing on Vancouver Island. The logo should represent the meanings and intentions behind Ignite Your Spirit.
