Gijsbert Hanekroot

Dutch photographer Gijsbert Hanekroot (Brussels, 1945) began his career in 1969 and spent the ’70s working for magazines and newspapers. His career as a photojournalist perfectly aligned with the explosion of the rock scene, and he masterfully documented this golden age of music history— photographing many of the era’s greatest icons.

Gijsbert strove to capture images that revealed the human being behind the musician. Trying to express a deeper truth about his subjects resulted in portraits that are natural and intimate, relaxed and sincere. He retired from music photography in 1983 and became an entrepreneur.

Twenty years later, he began to digitize his image archives. This led to the publication of Abba…Zappa: Seventies Rock Photography (Rotterdam, 2008)—uniquely designed to recall a stack of photos—and exhibitions in Paris, London, Moscow, Tokyo, Bologna and Amsterdam. While working on his book and exhibitions, Gijsbert felt a desire to return to photography. He https://spark.adobe.com/sp/design/page/2697cdff-99c5-4d88-89d7-b0bf66996788

began again by traveling and shooting his way through India, China, Eastern Europe and the USA.

Three Shadows Photography Art Centre

Three Shadows is looking forward to bring Gijsbert Hanekroot’s photography works to audience in China. His works witnessed the glorious history of Western rock music in the 1970s, allowing us to take a peak at the live scenes of David Bowie, John Lennon, The Rolling Stones etc. It would be a wonderful opportunity to make a panoramic observation and retrospect of these bands. At the same time, Gijsbert’s keen perspective and artistic instinct not only bring us an immersive experience of the time, but also preserve those precious moments of these rock stars different from common portraits. Rock music as an independent music category first appeared in China around the 1980s, ten years later than the golden age of rock in the West. The earliest Chinese rock musicians sang songs of the Beatles and other bands. Over the years, we found that more and more Chinese audiences are interested in music, and music has also been associated with many other art forms, such as online music talent shows and music movies (e.g. ‘China Rock’, ‘Rock in Berlin: THE CHINESE AVANTGARDE’). In 2017, Three Shadows exhibited photography works of Chinese https://spark.adobe.com/sp/design/page/2697cdff-99c5-4d88-89d7-b0bf66996788

folk musicians in the 1990s, which were filmed by French photographer Annais Martine. The exhibition was well received by the audience and has won many good reviews, and we are happy to see the vitality and more possibilities that art gives out when it is presented in different kinds of ways.

At its Beijing premises, Three Shadows covers 4,600 square meters. The main building, designed by Ai Weiwei, is a combination of three galleries— about 876 square meters in total—surrounded by 2,600 square meters of landscaped gardens. In 2015, a new branch of Three Shadows with 4,600 square meters of space opened in Xiamen, Fujian Province. Each branch includes a café, a photobook store, a professional darkroom open to the public, and the commercial +3 Gallery. Including both its Beijing and Xiamen locations, the Centre attracts 100,000 local and international visitors every year.

Three Shadows has an active educational program, hosts an artist-inresidence program for international photographers and scholars, collaborates annually with the famed French photography festival Les Recontres d'Arles for the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival in Xiamen, and has a collection of over 300 works by respected Chinese and https://spark.adobe.com/sp/design/page/2697cdff-99c5-4d88-89d7-b0bf66996788
