A Tradition of Christmas History Snippets Poinsettias Beautiful plants (tree) that became associated with Christmas from an old Mexican legend. A young girl did not have a gift to leave for a Christmas Eve Service for baby Jesus. She passed by some weeds on the way to the service and picked them, laid them, they changed colors and from there we have the beautiful red and green colors of Christmas. They became known as the flowers of Holy Night. it was named after the first US ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett.
