SPRING ARTS PREVIEW 2011

Animated favorite comes to Fox stage BY CAROLE TOWNSEND Staff Correspondent

ATLANTA — For one week only, April 26-May 1, Shrek the Musical is coming to the fabulous Fox Theatre as part of the 2010-11 Broadway Across America season. DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions have created a family theater production that thrills and excites children and adults alike. “We are thrilled to send Shrek the Musical to theatres across the country, and for American families to experience their favorite ogre and fairy tale creatures live on stage,” said Bill Damaschke, president of DreamWorks Theatricals. The production tells the story of the beloved swampdwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. On his journey, Shrek and his famous sidekick Donkey battle a wicked dragon, rescue a feisty princess and learn about true friendship and love. David F.M. Vaughn, a member of the original Broadway company who plays villain Lord Farquaad in the musical, said that portraying his character to the audience “is a ton of fun. Well, a half-ton of fun. Performing the entire show on my knees (including dancing and singing) is hard, but the character is so incredibly colorful and loony, and to play the villain is always the most rewarding. You can

SPRING ARTS PREVIEW 2011

FUN ALL FOR

Aurora’s summer schedule full of events for the entire family LAWRENCEVILLE — The Aurora Theatre will end its 15th season in May with “Over the River and Through the Woods” and open its 16th season in August with “A Chorus Line.” In “Over the River and Through the Woods,” by Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro, Sunday dinner at the Gianelli’s house is not to be missed. Nick is the only grandson, so when he is offered a promotion that will take him to the West coast, the family goes into panic mode and no amount of cooking can solve the problem. In this heartfelt comedy about growing old, one generation struggles to understand another.

The show runs May 12 to June 5. After the show’s run, a summer break would seem understandable, but the theater has all kinds of events planned throughout the summer. Lawrenceville Ghost Tours return to the historic square for a seventh year beginning May 6. The 90-minute walking tours will take place at 8:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday May to September. Aurora Funny Fridays has a “Crazy Amazing Comedy Magic Mentalism Show” featuring Arthur Atsma on May 20. The show features an extraordinary exhibition of mental prowess with a thread of good-natured

humor throughout. Shows are at 7:15 and 9:15 p.m. The season finale of Funny Fridays will feature the Short Bus Heroes Comedy Tour on Junee 24. Swing Night at the Aurora Theatre, featuring music from the 1970s and 1980s, will take place on Junee 25. Aurora Academy Summer Camps and intensives for students from first through 12th grade will have several different sessions from Junee 6 to July 15. An open house is scheduled from 1:30 to 5 p.m. April 30. For more information about the events or for pricing information, visit www.auroratheatre.com or call 678-226-6222.

Array of artists light up area venues this summer FROM STAFF REPORTS Nothing says summer like a California girl, and pop sensation Katy Perry continues a string of major acts to visit the Arena at Gwinnett Center this summer when she brings her California Dreams Tour to Duluth Junee 7. Perry, whose “Teenage Dream” album has sold more than 5 million copies since its release last year and has spawned three No. 1 singles — “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and “Firework” — is just part of a hot summer for the arena.

The first female artist to have three No. 1 hits off the same album in 11 years, Perry’s current tour features interaction with fans through social media sites, including an option where fans can post their own photos of the show that will appear during the concert and on www.katyperry.com. The 26-year-old Californian, married to comedian and actor Russell Brand, first hit it big in pop music with her previous hits, “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold.” She’ll be followed by Josh Groban on Junee 8

while Ke$sha hits Duluth for a show on July 30. Later this summer country music star Keith Urban will play back-toback shows at the Arena on Aug. 4-5. Many familiar favorites will be gracing the stages at other metro venues, including the King of the Parrotheads himself, Jimmy Buffett. Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band will bring Margaritaville to Atlanta on May 24 at Aaron’s Amphitheatre. That venue will also host Kenny Chesney May 20 and Def Leppard with Heart on Junee 18.

Joseph Macauley, 6, and his sister Sofia, 7, test out a hands-on video display on Archaeology at the new NatureQuest exhibit at the Fernbank Museum in Atlanta. The exhibit offers more than 100 interactive encounters as visitors explore an immersive, nature-inspired environment.

ADVENTURE IN SCIENCE

Fernbank museum opens newest children’s exhibit ‘Nature Quest’ BY HEATHER DARENBERG Staff Writer

ATLANTA — Fernbank Museum of Natural History opened its expansive new children’s exhibition, Fernbank NatureQuest, on March 19. The nearly 7,000-square-foot exhibition is one of the most significant additions to the museum since the world’s largest dinosaurs moved into Fernbank’s Great Hall in 2001. The $8 million exhibition will offer Fernbank’s youngest visitors a different kind of museum experience, where children will be engaged through more than 100 interactive encounters as they explore an immersive, nature-inspired environment

filled with live animals and hands-on learning, according to a news release. Fernbank NatureQuest allows visitors ages 2 through 10 into a world that belongs to the young with a working clubhouse built among the giant trees. Visitors can climb up a tree and cross elevated rope bridges for an aerial view of the immense expedition that awaits. Special interactive opportunities exist in every nook and cranny. Highlights include “night vision binoculars” that reveal the landscapes and inhabitants in the twilight hours; a realistic archaeology dig with layered artifacts for exploration; a traversable cave filled with fossils, geodes, echoes and speleothems; a magic

mirror that brings objects placed in front of it to life, including an acorn that grows into a tree and a fossilized trilobite that suddenly stirs again after 500 million years; and a simulated river that ripples as you cross and scatters with fish when you “splash.” “When we set out to design a new children’s exhibition over four years ago, our goal was to create an experience where visitors would be challenged, engaged and able to explore in ways that cultivate curiosity — just like real scientists,” said Fernbank’s President and CEO, Susan Neugent. “This was our opportunity to create a museum experience like no other, where children are part of the exhibition, not just observers. The

sophisticated experiences in NatureQuest will inspire further investigation year after year.” Inside the clubhouse, visitors can find exploration cards that offer tips on how to explore, where to look and what to search for next, including suggestions for parents on how to investigate each habitat, special scavenger hunts for deeper explorations and “ologist cards” that provide a directed investigation of the exhibition through the eyes of different scientists, such as an archaeologist, geologist, a zoologist, a marine biologist and others. As visitors set off on their journey, they’ll be able to explore the clubhouse as well as six diverse ecosystems: the ocean/estuary, swamp, pine flatwoods, forest,

waterfall/river and caves. Each region offers a reflection of what can be found in Georgia’s ecosystems while revealing the habitats they provide for a variety of animals. “Fernbank NatureQuest speaks to visitors in a way that children’s exhibitions haven’t typically done in the past,” said Cindy Sheehy, Fernbank’s Director of Family and Children’s Programming and a key member of the exhibition design team. “The exhibition empowers children to learn without directions by featuring activities that are openended with something to see, something to investigate or something to do literally everywhere you go with no set path on how to get there.”
