Does copper kill a cold virus?
D
EAR DR. ROACH: What do you know about copper killing the cold virus? I’m of the opinion that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Yet, there is a copper product on the market that says it kills the cold viRoach rus on contact. Many people have claimed it is effective. Are all these reviews fake? If preventing a cold was this easy, wouldn’t everyone know about it? — J. ANSWER: Copper does have antimicrobial properties. Bacteria will die on contact with pure metallic copper. The amount of time needed ranges from a few minutes for some Staphylococcal species to 5-15 days for the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. Viruses, which are somewhere between alive and not alive, being only able to replicate within a cell, can be destroyed by copper as well. For the influenza virus, 99.99% can be destroyed by keeping it in contact with metallic copper for six hours. Unfortunately, cold viruses and flu viruses can be inhaled and then taken up by cells, allowing them to replicate and further infect a person. There is simply no way a piece of copper can prevent infection by viruses when rubbed on the nose. That’s why there are no clinical trials showing the copper to be effective: It isn’t. I don’t think most of the people responding are fake. The power of believing that something is working is incredible. I suspect many of the people writing testimonials are also not being exposed often to cold viruses. There is no way to prevent a cold with 100% certainty. Handwashing and avoiding sick people remain the best treatments we have. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with granuloma annulare by two dermatologists. The rashes are on my hands, arms, legs and the back of my neck — and they’re spreading. Online research tells me that the cause is unknown and therefore there seems to be no cure. I have used two prescribed steroidal creams and taken high-dose niacin with no success. What can you tell me about the prospects of a cure? — K.M. ANSWER: Granuloma annulare indeed has no known cause. Infection has been long suspected, but many attempts to identify an infectious agent have been unsuccessful. It varies quite a bit in appearance but most commonly looks like a ring, anywhere between skin color to dark red. It is sometimes itchy. The kind it sounds like you have, called the generalized form, affecting many areas of the body, happens more commonly in people over 30; children and adults into their 20s tend to have the limited form. It is more common in women. I refer cases to a dermatologist, and my patients often have had success with injection of steroids. It is more effective than steroid creams or ointments. Some people require systemic treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil). The vitamin A derivative isotretinoin, most commonly used for acne, is also sometimes used. GA can disappear as mysteriously as it comes. About 75% of people will be free from disease in five years.

COLUMNIST I AMY DICKINSON
Wonderful grandson is terrible at table
D
EAR AMY: We have recently been reunited with our son’s child after 10 years. He is 13 — and is delightful, well behaved, and intelligent. However, unfortunately, he has terrible table manners. We went to a restaurant and it soon became apparent that he has never been shown how to use a knife, a napkin, etc. I didn’t want to be critical, so I tried saying things like, “I find it easier to cut my food if I hold the knife this way,” or, “I put my napkin in my lap so I can wipe my mouth,” — that sort of thing. This was met with a blank look and the behavior resumed. It won’t be possible to speak to his mother about it, and again, I don’t want to be critical. How can I teach him table manners, other than modeling good behavior? — Mannerly Grandmother DEAR MANNERLY: You have just met this boy. I infer from this that there has been substantial upheaval in his life — perhaps a parental split and possibly a custody shift. If his father is on the scene, it would be most logical to speak with him about it. You might assume that he has mainly eaten directly out of fastfood bags. I wouldn’t present this as a top-line concern, however — be-
cause the whole family is readjusting to your grandson’s reemergence, you should step carefully and kindly into his Dickinson life. Adolescent boys are sensitive and tender creatures, with acute awareness about being judged by others, and they are surrounded by conflicting and confusing messages about how they should behave. For now, don’t correct him, hint, nudge, or use body language to convey your disapproval. You want to be the people in his life who completely accept him, right now — just as he is. When he is feeling more comfortable, he will relax and start watching how you comport yourselves, and over time you can model and offer gentle instruction. A great way to introduce table manners is to involve him in cooking a meal. All teens should know how to make a stack of tasty pancakes. Show him how to set the table. And then sit down and eat together. DEAR AMY: My boyfriend has made a habit out of using birthdays and holidays as an opportunity to upgrade his own lifestyle — under the
guise of generous gift giving. After buying himself the latest upgraded laptop, he gave me his used laptop for Christmas. (He did spend money getting it cleaned up.) For my last birthday he took that opportunity to upgrade his own set of scuba gear and gave me his used gear. The thing is, I’m not a diver, and my current laptop is perfectly adequate for my needs (the one he gave me is much less portable). He gets upset if I politely decline these gifts, so these items are really just taking up valuable closet space at this point. Am I ungrateful or am I justified in feeling a bit stuck in an ungrateful recipient position? I’m also not able to figure out why exactly this irks me, and it seems ingenious to fake enthusiasm as I’m walking gifts over to the closet. Your reaction? — Gift Horse DEAR GIFT HORSE: This irks you because it is irksome. There is nothing at all wrong with giving a loved one a reconditioned, used, vintage, second-hand gift (in my opinion), as long as the item is personal in nature, wished for or asked for — and not the direct descendant of the giver’s own upgrade!
(I’m talking about you — unwanted, unloved, and unused scuba gear!) You should convey to your guy, “Honey, if you want to give yourself new stuff, then good for you! But I don’t want your castoffs. In the future, you should sell the stuff you don’t want and use the proceeds however you wish.” You might be able to drive this point home the next time you upgrade your phone. Wrap up the old one and present it to your guy. He might say, “Thanks, babe — but I don’t need this. I don’t want it. I already have one! And you can say, “Exactly.” DEAR AMY: Thank you for your empathetic reply to “Survivor,” the abused person who wanted to confront a childhood bully, years later. You wrote: “Vengeance doesn’t quiet rage; it stokes it.” Put another way: Revenge is like drinking poison and hoping the other person will die. — Beth DEAR BETH: Yes! This profound statement rings so true. You can contact Amy Dickinson via email: ASKAMY@ amydickinson.com. Readers may send postal mail to Ask Amy, P.O. Box 194, Freeville, NY 13068. Britain threatening to walk away from UK-EU trade talks Monday Britain has threatened to walk away from trade negotiations with the European Union if sufficient progress hasn’t been made by June, raising the stakes just days before the country begins crucial talks with its largest export market. Negotiators will sit down Monday for the first round of discussions on a trade deal between the UK and the EU after they staked out sharply divergent positions this week on what should happen when a Brexit transition period expires at the end of 2020. The British government on Thursday committed itself to pursuing a basic free-trade agreement that would maintain zero tariffs and quotas on goods but still introduce new friction at borders, an outcome long feared by business. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the “broad outline” of such an agreement must materialize quickly. “If that does not seem to be the case at the June meeting, the government will need to decide whether the UK’s attention should move away from negotiations and focus solely on continuing domestic preparations to exit the transition period in an orderly fashion,” the government said.
WORLD & NATION Trump claims coronavirus only partially responsible for stock market plummet By Paul Leblanc and Maegan Vazquez CNN
President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that concerns over the novel coronavirus are only partially responsible for the U.S. stock market plunge this week, insisting that the dive is also related to the Democratic presidential debate that took place after markets plunged. “I think it took a hit for maybe two reasons. I think they look at the people — you watched (the debate) last night and they say, ‘If there’s even a possibility that that could happen’ — I think it really takes a hit because of that. And it certainly took a hit because of this,” Trump told reporters at the White House, referring to the coronavirus. He later reiterated that investors hearing Democratic candidates “had a huge effect” on the markets. “I think you can add quite a bit of selloff to what they’re saying,” Trump said. “I really believe that’s a factor.” In fact, the debate took place after a two-day sell-off that caused a nearly 2,000-point drop in the Dow, and Dow fu-

Scientists have discovered for the first time that there are two distinct species of red panda, not just one — and the find could have important ramifications for conservation efforts. The small mammals, which are already endangered, are native to China, Nepal, India, Bhutan and Myanmar. Although red pandas’ physical differences have led many to speculate that two species did exist, this research is the first time the theory has been proven. Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and Kunming found there are Himalayan red pandas and Chinese red pandas. Using data from 65 wild red pandas from across Asia, researchers found each species had distinct DNA.
U.S. stocks faced another sharp selloff on Thursday as worries about coronavirus mounted, with the three main indexes dragged into correction territory and on track for their worst week since the financial crisis. The Dow fell up to 960 points Thursday before bouncing back a bit and briefly reemerging from correction territory. The index has fallen more than 10% below its most-recent peak, putting it in correction, and was down 620 points, or 2.3%, in the early afternoon. Similarly, the S&P 500 briefly bounced back from the worst of its selloff but continues to flirt with falling into a correction. The index was down 2% in the early afternoon. Both indexes are on track for their worst week since the fall of 2008, the midst of the financial crisis.
The British government’s contentious plans to build a third runway at London’s Heathrow Airport have been blocked by an appeals court on environmental grounds, in a landmark victory for climate campaigners. Judges in the closelywatched case at London’s Court of Appeal said the UK government, which threw its support behind the proposal, had failed to take into account what impact the move would have on Britain’s commitments under the Paris Agreement. The decision could scupper plans to expand one of the world’s busiest airports, and was celebrated on the court’s steps on Thursday by a number of climate groups that had brought the legal action against the UK’s Transport Secretary. — From wire reports
tures also turned from positive to negative during Trump’s coronavirus news conference Wednesday evening. The index’s gains for the year had been wiped out Monday, and Tuesday marked its fourthlargest swing from highest to lowest point in a single session — all before the Democratic debate started.
At its lowest, the Dow was off by 963 points. Still, Trump held Wednesday that the stock market — which he uses as a signpost of the strength of the economy, a pillar of his reelection campaign — will bounce back. “I think the stock market will recover. The economy is very strong,” he said.
CDC confirms first US coronavirus case of ‘unknown’ origin For the first time, a U.S. patient has contracted novel coronavirus with no clue as to where it came from. The California patient didn’t travel anywhere known to have the virus, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. And the patient wasn’t exposed to anyone known to be infected. That means this could be the first U.S. case of ”community spread” of the virus. The Solano County resident was admitted to UC Davis Medical Center last week but wasn’t tested for coronavirus until Sunday, according to a letter sent Wednesday to UC Davis staff and obtained by CNN. UC Davis had requested coronavirus testing for the

Shark Tank host loses $400,000 in a scam

The MPC is “the single worldwide location for receipt and distribution of positional measurements of minor planets, comets and outer irregular natural satellites of the major planets.” “Orbit integrations indicate that this object is temporarily bound to the Earth,” according to the announcement on its site. “No link to a known artificial object has been found.
Further observations and dynamical studies are strongly encouraged.” The asteroid is likely between 6.2 feet and 11.4 feet in diameter, the researchers said on Twitter. “Over the next few weeks, more observations are likely to come in,” Pruyne said in an email to CNN. “This will better help us understand the origin of the object, as well as a more accurate timeline of when the object came into orbit.”

Earth has a new mini-moon — but its presence in orbit is only temporary By Ashley Strickland CNN
It’s not the moon, but you can call it mini-moon. Earth has captured a tiny object and pulled it into orbit. The asteroid, known as 2020 CD3, is only the second asteroid known to orbit Earth. And while it won’t last, this asteroid acts as a temporary mini-moon whirling around our planet. The asteroid is expected to drop out of orbit around the

The discovery was made by Kacper Wierzchos and Theodore Pruyne, researcher specialists for the Catalina Sky Survey. This will help them determine if it is a rocky asteroid or an artificial object, said Eric Christensen, director of the Catalina Sky Survey. home at approximately 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Police said Benjamin Clarke was found safe overnight in Forsyth County. Police said arrangements were made to reunite him with his family. A relative said he was located in Cumming at ap-
proximately 1:30 a.m. on Thursday after he had gone missing for nearly 12 hours. Police said Clark was last seen at his home on Burnt Oak Way in Dacula at around 1 p.m. He left the home in his black 2011 Ford Escape.

From A1 Bennett and his classmates learned about some of the intuitive digital features in new Mercedes-Benz GLAClass and E-Class vehicles, cars with features likely to become more standard in the future. “We get a general look at cars, but most of these cars are older, so it’s cool to see new cars that we’ll actually be working on,” Bennett said. “If we go into the industry, we’ll actually see more cars like this than the ones we work with on the lot.” Students learned what makes the digital systems inside new Mercedes-Benz models tick. They also got a demonstration of some of the new cars’ auto-parking mechanisms. Maxwell’s automotive course is becoming a Mercedes-Benz STAR Connect school. Students can take Mercedes-Benz courses and earn certifications while at Maxwell. Maxwell has similar partnerships with manufacturers like Ford and Subaru.
LILBURN From A1 we have faster response times to calls and things like that and repurpose the building or maybe replace it with something different and more in line with their vision of the downtown redevelopment.” The new building is located on what Mayor Johnny Crist said is “the busiest thoroughfare” in the city, at 4600 Lawrenceville Hwy. Hedley said he thought the day would never come when the Lilburn police officers and personnel would get to walk into a new building with more space and flexibility to do their work. A few years ago, he said, the department had six supervisors in one office sharing one computer and

The goal of the partnership is to encourage and facilitate local dealer involvement with corporate support from Mercedes-Benz. Students will have access to current year model vehicles and resources and become more appealing candidates for technician jobs and postsecondary programs. “To a dealership, it’s great because they’ll get training and some of the hands on, and Mercedes-Benz will support us with products and resources,” Maxwell automotive instructor Max Chavez said. “It would be great for a Mercedes-Benz dealership to pull students out of here, because they already have
some exposure.” From the manufacturer’s perspective, Mercedes-Benz is creating its own pipeline of certified technicians. The manufacture, which has a corporate office in Sandy Springs, established a similar program at Gwinnett Technical College. In the post-secondary program, students receive a two-year associate’s degree while balancing an internship with a local dealer. The idea is that the dealer partners will eventually hire their already experienced interns after graduation. Experienced technicians are a commodity that all car manufactures are search-
ing for, according to Mercedes Technician Recruitment Program Specialist Michelle Ahima. “There is a huge shortage for any technician, not just Mercedes-Benz,” Ahima said. “We’re doing our part to get them in early, which is why we’re targeting Atlanta high schools.” Bennett had a prior interest in cars before choosing Maxwell High School’s automotive pathway. Now he’s fascinated by the increased voltage required for selfparking vehicles and other digital programs. Cars are more than a hobby for Bennett, now. Bennett said he’s already received some pre-certifications from Ford and is considering doing so for Mercedes-Benz after seeing some of the vehicles. “Probably now that I just found out about this Mercedes-Benz one, I will probably do more units,” he said.
one phone. “That’s how fast we outgrew that building, and this is a well-deserved compliment to the hard work that they provide to our citizens day to day,” Hedley said. On Wednesday, the building was not completely finished, but Hedley said it was important to hold the ribbon cutting ceremony then so that Crist could see it as the sitting mayor. Crist resigned earlier this year to seek a seat in the Georgia General Assembly. “It was that important to us that you say what you have to say today in front of all of us, and I wanted to thank you for everything you’ve done for me and the PD,” Hedley said to Crist. “You’ve been an amazing mayor, and I hope your replacement does the same for us.” Crist said the facility was
like giving the Lilburn Police Department “one of the finest tools the county has seen.” He said while the old facility served the department and the city well, it reached its lifetime effectiveness. “With this new tool, officers will have a real office, not a converted jail cell…,” Crist said. “This new tool is located right here on the busiest thoroughfare in our city so our officers can further reduce response time to pursue calls without screaming through the downtown neighborhood with sirens and flashing blue lights.” And the department will no longer have to convert the city council chambers or the judges’ chambers into a training facility with this new tool, Crist said. In fact, Hedley said the most recent citizens police academy will get to train out of
the new building. “We hope the public enjoys this easy access and takes advantage of the many great programs our department offers from this building,” Hedley said. “We are excited to soon occupy this beautiful building and roll up our sleeves to get to work making Lilburn the safest city possible.” Emily Harvey, municipal court administrator, also said the new building will allow the department to have a more public presence with newer technology, as well as to expedite things electronically for the courts. “This is as close to completion that we’ve seen,” Harvey said Wednesday. “It’s beautiful.” She said the municipal court’s first session inside the new building will be March 10.

ARC From A1 and was approved by the ARC board on Wednesday. “The Atlanta Region’s Plan offers a balanced, strategic approach to keep our region moving forward, even as our population continues to grow,” ARC Executive Director Doug Hooker said in a statement. “This plan will help metro Atlanta remain competitive, with a high quality of life, in the decades to come.” There are few items that Gwinnett commuters will actually see included in the plan to address the county, including the intersection to interchange conversion on State Route 316, the new interchange on I-85 and the widening of Jimmy Carter Boulevard. There are also, for example, long range projections in another $10.9 billion area of the plan, involving transit improvements, that show an eventual bus rapid transit line in Gwinnett, connecting the Sugarloaf Mills area to the Doraville MARTA station. Bus rapid transit, also known as BRT, is one of the items Gwinnett County officials hope to accomplish as part of the county’s transit expansion plans. The intersection conversion, new I-85 exit, road widening and BRT route could individually be considered big transportation projects for Gwinnett County

in the regional plan. The widening of Jimmy Carter Boulevard, for example, would take place between Buford Highway and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, an area prone to backups and congestion. The plan calls for widening Jimmy Carter from four lanes to six lanes. This is listed as a long range project in the Atlanta Region’s Plan. Meanwhile, Gwinnett County and the Georgia Department of Transportation have been working for years to turn State Route 316 into a limited access highway through the county. Work is already underway on such a conversion at Harbins Road, and an intersection to interchange conversion at Hi Hope Road is another part of that ongoing effort. The proposed interchange at I-85 and McGinnis Ferry Road has also been in the works for years, with construction still about three years away. This falls in the same part of the plan that the State Route 36 and Hi Hope Road interchange comes from. Another project, which may not get as much attention as the other projects is a bike-ped bridge — the replacement of the old Rogers Bridge — that will connect the cities of Duluth and Johns Creek, as well as the Western Gwinnett Bikeway. The ARC included $10 billion for bike-ped projects in the Atlanta Region’s Plan. Runners in the 10K portion of last year’s Run the Reagan in Snellville take off from the starting line. This year’s race — which also includes a half-marathon, a 5K and a 1K fun run — will take place on Saturday. as an untimed 5K run/walk and 1K fun run. The halfmarathon is expected to be the first race run, and it is slated to kick off at 9 a.m. The registration fees through the end of Wednesday are $55 for the halfmarathon, $40 for the 10K, $35 for the timed 5K, $30 for the untimed 5K and $20 for the 1K fun run. The registration fees for each race increase by $5 after Wednesday. The Run the Reagan is a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race. “If you’re a racer, it’s a great race,” Weber said. “We get a lot of talent. I believe we have people from 17 states now that are entering and it’s a competitive race ... However, the local attraction — you know, Gwinnett County does not have a lot of featured events and this is one of the few that puts southern Gwinnett County on the map. “We’re just excited about it.” Runners can register online at bit.ly/2wN9EQI, or in person from noon until
8 p.m. Friday at Academy Sports, which is located at 1585 Scenic Highway, or starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the race course starting line, located at the intersection of Ronald Reagan and Presidential parkways. A family festival with music, food, vendors, inflatables and yard games will also take place along the race route from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. After the races, anyone who wants to stroll along the length of Ronald Reagan Parkway will be allowed to do so until 3 p.m. Weber said the race’s organizers are able to stage the annual event due to partnerships with Gwinnett County and the city of Snellville, as well as a long list of sponsors, including Eastside Medical Center, E.R. Snell Contractors, Canon United Methodist Church, Georgia Power, Mazzawi Family Dentistry, Kroger and Coca-Cola. Additional information about the race can be found at runthereagan.net.

It’s almost time for runners to find their mark, get set and start running up and down a busy Gwinnett County road. The 26th Annual Run the Reagan will take place Saturday on Ronald Reagan Parkway in Snellville. Online registration is underway, but the fees increased Thursday. Run the Reagan board chairman Ron Weber said the number of people registered for the race is already looking strong, and organizers expect it to get better in the final days before the event. “As of (Monday) there were 1,300, which puts us several hundred ahead of last year,” Weber said. “Most of the signups come in these last three or four days and we usually get a few hundred on the last day depending on people waiting to see what the weather is going to be like. “So, we’re hoping for 2,000 (participants). We think we’re gonna get 2,000. If God gives us a bright, sunny day, then it might be more.” This year’s race will raise funds for the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, the Lilburn Cooperative Ministry and the Brookwood Schools Foundation. Schools in the Parkview, Central Gwinnett, Shiloh and South Gwinnett clusters will also receive some money based on the number of runners they get signed up. Runners are also asked to bring non-perishable food items to the race to be donated to the co-ops. The Run the Reagan includes a timed half-marathon, 10K and 5K as well

metro Atlanta traffic. The teams’ roads through the state tournament bracket have been just as different. Lanier routed Sprayberry 7645 in the first round, but reaching Friday’s 4 p.m. semifinal got significantly tougher from there. Both the second-round and quarterfinal games went to overtime. The Longhorns (25-5) have pulled through back-to-back tight
games, 60-58 over Stephenson in the second round and 58-55 over Langston Hughes in Tuesday’s quarterfinals. Senior Sion James, a Tulane recruit, was big in both wins. He made a gamewinner in the waning seconds against Stephenson, then fueled the quarterfinal win with a game-high 23 points along with eight rebounds. See LANIER, B2
Buford grinds its way to another playoff win By Will Hammock will.hammock@gwinnettdailypost.com
On most occasions, the Buford girls basketball team’s full-court pressure works as planned and rushes opponents into mistakes. It didn’t this week. That said, the Wolves did what they usually do — in a different way — win in the state tournament. They didn’t play their best in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals, yet still gutted out a 58-47 victory over Carrollton to reach Saturday’s semifinal round at Fort Valley State. The three-time defending state champions have won 18 straight games in the state playoffs dating back to a Final Four loss Feb. 27, 2016 to Americus-Sumter. Their latest outing was not a thing of beauty. “What we really tried to get the girls to do is flush (the quarterfinal win), leave that one behind and go back to playing our style of basketball,” Buford girls coach Gene Durden said. “Make sure we dictate tempo and not let tempo get dictated to us.” See BUFORD, B2

The moment Gwinnett County’s two remaining teams in Class AAAAAAA state basketball tournaments felt like they were built for since they first came together during summer workouts and tournaments has arrived. As much work as Grayson’s boys and Collins Hill’s girls have put in the ensuing nine months or so since, the toughest work may still be ahead when the top-ranked Rams (29-1) take on No. 8 and defending state champion McEachern (20-5) in an 8 p.m. boys semifinal, preceded by the second-ranked Eagles (30-0) meeting No. 5 Campbell (23-7) in a girls semi at 6 p.m. Saturday at Buford City Arena. Both teams have plenty of recent history with the Final Four, but limited success in it.
However, the infusion of new talent through transfers and younger players coming up through the system to already solid core of returning players has given both squads reason to believe this year could mark a breakthrough to finally getting to the top of their respective state championship ladders. “I feel like we’ve always been underdogs,” said Grayson guard Deivon Smith, who finished with four points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the Rams’ 65-27 quarterfinal win over No. 5 Norcross on Wednesday night. “I feel like this year, especially after this game, the script has flipped a little bit. … I feel like everybody’s been talking about us since the summer and everybody wants to beat us. Everybody’s going to give us their best shot.”

Wesleyan coaching tree extends to three of four semifinal teams By Christine Troyke christine.troyke@ gwinnettdailypost.com
Just a few years ago, three of the four head coaches in the Class A Private girls basketball semifinals were on staff together. Nichole Dixon and Carolyn Whitney were assistants to Jan Azar at Wesleyan for several seasons together. They’re also both former players of Azar’s. Dixon was hired away by Holy Innocents’ and won the state title last season. The Bears beat Azar’s Wesleyan team in the championship, a year after losing to the Wolves in the final. Whitney was an assistant at Lambert and then got her first
head coaching job at Brookwood in 2017. When Azar left Wesleyan last spring, Whitney was picked to replace the only coach in Wolves’ history. Azar is now at Hebron Christian and all three women have their teams in the Final Four. Azar and Dixon face off once more at 6 p.m. today at Georgia College in Milledgville. Whitney’s Wesleyan team plays St. Francis in the 2 p.m. game. “Girls basketball over the years has evolved greatly,” said Azar, who guided Wesleyan to 13 state titles and 18 finals appearances during her 22year tenure. “Hopefully we had something to do with that. I love the way the way coaches
out there are pushing their girls to play faster. All four teams going into Final Four play the same pace.” Holy Innocents’ is led by junior Jillian Hollingshead, Rachel Suttle and Jada Farrell. Hebron has Super Six selection Malia Fisher and sharpshooting Nicole Azar, also in the Class of 2021. Senior Avyonce Carter, a Georgia Tech commit, and Alyssa Phillip have Wesleyan in the semifinals for the 17th straight year. St. Francis, coached by Aisha Kennedy, has seniors Amirah Abdur Rahim and Savannah Samuel, who both top 6-feet. See WESLEYAN, B4

Fresh faces rising to top of NASCAR standings By Holly Cain
NASCAR Wire Service
Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney was a bit frustrated Sunday having narrowly missed — again — a chance to hoist a winner’s trophy. Only two races into the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season and Blaney has been a major factor in both checkered flags. But there is some solace for the popular and talented competitor. Blaney is the NASCAR Cup Series championship leader entering Sunday’s Auto Club 400 (3:30 p.m. on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Auto Club Speedway. Near-misses, triumphant rides and a sense of it being “anyone’s race” have been the order of business in the young NASCAR Cup Series season. Only two drivers have scored top-10 finishes in both the opening two races. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick finished fifth in the Dayton 500 and was eighth last Sunday at Las Vegas. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson has finishes of 10th at Daytona and ninth at Las Vegas. Sixteen other drivers have scored at least one top-10 finish — ranging from Corey LaJoie to Matt DiBenedetto.

NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Blaney waits in the garage during practice for the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Race winners Denny Hamlin (Daytona 500) and Joey Logano (Las Vegas) did so in dramatic form. But, Chris Buescher, who was third in the Daytona 500 and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who was third Sunday in Vegas are both ranked the highest they’ve ever been entering the third race of the season. Buescher’s finishes are third and 14th (at Las Vegas) and the driver of the No. 17 Roush-Fenway Ford is ranks eighth in the series

standings — 24 points behind leader Ryan Blaney. Stenhouse, who started on the pole for the Daytona 500, has finishes of 20th (Daytona) and third (Las Vegas); and is ranked fifth in the NASCAR Cup Series standings — only 19 points behind Blaney. “So far, so good,” Stenhouse said Sunday. “Two weeks we’ve been fast. This week, we weren’t bad and we know what we need to work on and I know (crew chief)
Brian (Pattie) and the boys will tune it up.” Austin Dillon, driver of the famous No. 3 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, is a former Daytona 500 winner (2018) which is the ultimate in season good starts. Yet his early consistency, not a trophy this year, has landed him seventh in the NASCAR Cup Series points standings. He trails Blaney by only 22 points. He finished 12th in the Daytona 500 and answered it with
real,” a proud DiBenedetto said Sunday standing alongside his No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford. “Tough to be that close, but hey, this is only the second race of the season. So it was the strength of this team. “It’s so cool to have the backing of all the people that allow me to drive this thing.” Looking forward to the two-mile Auto Club Speedway, where the series races this weekend, only half the current top 10 in the standings earned a top-10 finish in last year’s race — Logano (second), Harvick (fourth), Blaney (fifth), Hamlin (seventh) and Dillon (10th). Kyle Busch, the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion and defending Auto Club Speedway race winner, is still looking for his first top-10 finish of the early 2020 season. He finished 34th at Daytona with an engine problem and 15th at Las Vegas. Busch is ranked 27th in the standings, 60 points back from the standings lead. Busch is one of the best at Auto Club Speedway — with four wins — three in the last seven races. A victory in California this weekend would automatically earn him a Playoff berth and right his ship.

Although the popular driver of the famed No. 43 Chevrolet earned big headlines for his runner-up finish in the 2018 Daytona 500; he is actually higher in the championship standings after two races this season with a 15th-place showing at Daytona and a sixth-place run last Sunday at Las Vegas. He’s ranked 12th in the standings a 26 points behind series standings lead. Sunday’s race runner-up Matt DiBenedetto, 2020 Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson are all tied in in points from ninth-11th. DiBenedetto is another who is riding high after an extremely positive start in his Wood Brothers Racing inaugural season. He equaled a career best mark finishing runner-up Sunday in Las Vegas. Add that to a 19th-place finish in the Daytona 500 and DiBenedetto is ranked in the top 10 in the points standings after two races for the first time in his career. “This is all just too sur-

40 years after ‘Miracle on Ice,’ socialism making comeback
M
embers of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” U.S. Olympic hockey team have come under fire for joining President Trump at his Las Vegas rally last week wearing “Keep America Great” hats. In fact, their appearance was highly appropriate. Forty years ago, those players’ victory over the Soviets helped restore our nation’s faith in American greatness. A more troubling development in Nevada occurred the day after the rally, when Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. — a socialist who embraced Soviet-backed regimes — won the state’s Democratic caucuses, making him the undisputed front-runner for the party’s presidential nomination. Only in a country where many have forgotten the lessons of the Miracle on Ice would this be possible. The Miracle on Ice came at a time when many believed the Soviet Union was ascendant and that the United States was on the decline. President Jimmy Carter bemoaned a “crisis of confidence . . . a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will.” Then, on Feb. 22, 1980, a bunch of American amateurs — most of them college kids — defeated the mighty Soviet team in Lake Placid, New York, and millions of Americans thought: If we can beat the them on the ice, we can beat them in the Cold War. and he is still wrong today. On Sunday, Sanders defended Castro in an interview with CBS News’s “60 Minutes,” saying, “When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing?” Regarding Venezuela, a brutal Cuba-backed socialist narco-dictatorship, Sanders has opposed the recognition of opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the country’s legitimate interim president. Asked by the New York Times, “Is it appropriate for the United States to provide nonmilitary support for regime-change efforts, as the Trump administration did in Venezuela?” (emphasis added), Sanders replied “No.” And while Sanders now rails against Russia for its 2016 election interference, during the Obama administration he voted against the Magnitsky Act imposing sanctions against Russia for its human-rights abuses. The idea that a man who embraced communist tyrants could soon be elected president of the United States is stunning — and would have been unthinkable 40 years ago during the Winter Games in Lake Placid. So, spare us the outrage if some of the heroes of those 1980 Olympics want to “Keep America Great.” Marc Thiessen is a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the former chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush.

Gwinnett winners of photographic competition on display at Hudgens By Chamian Cruz chamian.cruz@gwinnettdailypost.com
The Gwinnett Chapter of the Georgia Nature Photographers Association recently named the winners of its 5th annual “Stand in Ansel Adams Footsteps” photography competition. For the first time this year, their work will be available for viewing at an exhibition at The Hudgens Center for Art and Learning. The exhibition will run until April 25 and is free to the public. The Georgia Nature Photographers Association is a club made up of eight chapters with members of every skill level. It hosts an annual expo, competitions, workshops, field trips and events. Of the winners whose work will be featured at the exhibition, five are from Gwinnett, including: ♦ John Barfield, first place for “Winter Vista” (enthusiast division; landscape category); honorable mention for “The Wave” (enthusiast division; open theme category) ♦ Anna DeStefano, honorable mention for “Outer Banks” (enthusiast division; landscape category) ♦ Jeff Milsteen, honorable mention for “Snow and Stream” (enthusiast division; landscape category); third place for “Lotus Blosson” (enthusiast division; up close and personal category) ♦ Tony Madden, first place for
“Glacier Greens” (enthusiast division; up close and personal category) ♦ Maggie Dubeck, honorable mention for “Mushroom” (enthusiast division; up close and personal category) The concept and goal of the competition, which is meant to pay tribute to Adams, is to shoot in black and white photos to emulate the style, look and feel of his work. “It has grown each year, with not only more participating amateur only photographers, but with the tremendous quality and quantity of the work submitted,” Steward Woodard, GNPA Gwinnett Chapter coordinator, said. Adams is known for his black and white images of the great American western wilderness. He was a founding member of Group f/64, which advocated “pure” photography such as sharp focus and the use of the full tonal range in a photograph. Fifty-seven GNPA photographers from all eight chapters made entries. Both novice and enthusiast divisions submitted 299 photos in three categories – landscape, up close and personal, and open theme. Woodard said the biggest and most diverse competition to date is now on display at the Hudgens, with 138 total framed photographs. This year’s juror was Mark Green, a commercial photographer who has traveled on assignments around the U.S. and the world. In 1976, he

major influence, Ansel Adams. He had a challenging and difficult task viewing and scoring the finalists.” The winners were recognized for their work at a reception held Feb. 19, which even served birthday cake since Adams was born in San Francisco Feb. 20, 1902. GNPA holds the competition in February each year as a small nod to Adams’
birth month. Founded over 35 years ago, the Hudgens Center for Art and Learning is a non-profit that offers art exhibitions, arts enrichment classes, self-guided tours, and community outreach programs for children and adults. It is located at 6400 Sugarloaf Pkwy #300, Duluth.
