GWINNETTTASTES A selection of local eateries recently featured in the Gwinnett Daily Post: • Mazzy’s Owner Lee Christiansen has set up an open, spacious place to watch your favorite teams play on TV. But he also wanted a menu that strived for more than traditional pub fare. Mazzy’s does just that, with wings and burgers being joined by daily specials and signature dishes such as grouper, fish tacos and meatloaf, which is made from his grandmother’s recipe. Other customer favorites are the bourbon chicken platter and the Old Fashioned burger. Mazzy’s has 19 beers on tap and 53 varieties available in bottles. 7160 Jimmy Carter Blvd., Norcross. 678-822-9888 • Brown Bag Deli

Inspired by his son-in-law’s deli business in Pennsylvania, owner Joe Stackhouse created the Brown Bag Deli with a specialty in creating a variety of New York style sandwiches. The breakfast menu offers a diverse amount of options to choose from, such as a spinach, egg and a cheese sunrise sandwich. For lunch, customers prefer the California club, reuben and hot pastrami. Brown Bag Deli's desserts include brownies, cheesecakes, the Big Apple Pie and the Big New York black and white cookie. 340 Town Center Ave., Suite A2, Suwanee. 678-682-3496 • Luciano’s Executive Chef John Soilis revamps the menu of the upscale eatery every three to four months to coincide with seasons and what

ingredients are available fresh. A popular dish is the scallops and artichokes, which is made with linguine, pancetta and a garlic lemon butter sauce. Another popular menu item is the flatbread, which comes with a variety of toppings, including pepperoni, smoked chicken, prosciutto and more. Pasta, salads, steak and seafood dishes round out the dinner menu, while the lunch menu includes paninis. 6555 Sugarloaf Parkway, Suite 309, Duluth. 770-2551727 • Three Blind Mice The restaurant uses all fresh ingredients and makes all dishes from scratch, requiring menu changes to keep with what is in season. The breakfast menu changes daily, and each day they

write what is on the menu for the morning on the large chalkboard in the bar. This gives the restaurant more of a coffee shop feel in the morning. If you are looking for a large breakfast, try the Sunday brunch. The restaurant offers many great items including eggs Benedict. Dinner and lunch are the busiest meals. The food has a homemade quality. Some of the customers’ favorites include the Steak Diane, lump crabcakes and the iceberg salad. All three of these items have survived all menu changes. 1066 Killian Hill Road, Suite 101, Lilburn. 770-696-4139. www.tbmrestaurant.com

MOVIES DISC SPOTLIGHT MICHAEL CLARK

Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 (4-disc Blu-ray + DVD) (G) Movie: ★★★★ Disc: ★★★★ When it was first released in 1940, “Fantasia” was both a critical and boxoffice flop and it’s easy to understand why. Still one of the poorest performers in the Disney catalog, the film was unlike anything that had come before it and it defies categorization. It has animation without dialogue set to often obscure classical music and features mostly serious subject matter. The sequel was far more light-hearted but never wavered from the daring, groundbreaking format and makes for an ideal companion piece to the original. Technical specs: aspect ratio: Full

Classic night Gwinnett Ballet Theatre presents performance of ‘Nutcracker’ BY HEATHER DARENBERG STAFF WRITER heather.darenberg@ gwinnettdailypost.com

DULUTH — You don’t have to wait for the ninth day of Christmas to see ladies dancing in Gwinnett. The Gwinnett Ballet Theatre’s annual “Nutcracker” show opens Saturday at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center. The two-act ballet, based on the story “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice,” tells the story of a young girl who dreams of a Nutcracker prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King. The show features more than just dancing. Commerce resident Bill Kress, who plays magical uncle Drosselmeyer, will be performing his 200th consecutive show this year. He’s never missed a performance in 13 years. Kress, who is a magician, brings some real magic and illusion to the stage. “I do five minutes worth of magic in a minute and a half,” he said. “It’s in time to music. It’s hard because I’m also working with animals. I don’t want to give too much away ... but timing is everything.” Kress said, to him, the show has become a holiday tradition. “(The audience) will see the spectacle and grandeur and excitement of true

HOLIDAY MOVIE PREVIEW

WINTER WONDERLAND

After a slow year, Hollywood set to release notable films After 11 months of mostly disappointing productions, Hollywood girds its collective loins and delivers what will hopefully be their strongest titles of the year. Also included are some of the more notable, higher-profile movies scheduled for early 2011 release. As always, release dates are subject to change. Dec. 10 BLACK SWAN — Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (“Requiem For a Dream,” “The Wrestler”) gets back to form with this psychological thriller about a ballerina (Natalie Portman) and her understudy (Mila Kunis) who butt heads while preparing for a production of “Swan Lake.” THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER — With a new studio (Fox), the highly lucrative fantasy franchise based on the

VIEWPOINTS MICHAEL CLARK

works of C.S. Lewis goes 3-D and will try, probably successfully, to make everyone forget about the letdown that was “Prince Caspian.” HEMINGWAY’S GARDEN OF EDEN — This long-delayed 2008 drama — based on a posthumous 1986 novel by Ernest Hemingway — centers on well-to-do American newlyweds (Mena Suvari and Jack Huston) who both fall for a dangerous and mysterious French girl (Caterina Murino).

THE TOURIST — Johnny Depp plays an American on holiday in Italy who is used by an English woman (Angelina Jolie) to throw off authorities pursuing her fugitive lover. Even if it’s bad (which is unlikely) the talent and beauty of the leads and the Venice setting will generate huge returns. Dec. 17 THE FIGHTER — Slightly recalling “Raging Bull,” Mark Wahlberg stars as real-life boxer Micky Ward with Christian Bale as his half brother and dedicated trainer. This is the third collaboration between Wahlberg and director David O. Russell (“Three Kings” and “I Heart Huckabees”). HOW DO YOU KNOW — Romantic dysfunction vet James L. Brooks (“As Good As It Gets”) aims for a slightly younger demographic in this tough fluff dramedy

starring Reese Witherspoon torn between two lovers (Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd) who takes advice from a sagely Jack Nicholson. I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS — This fact-based comedy/drama is either going to be a complete winner or a total bust. Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey star as prison cellmates who fall in love. After one of them is released from jail the other attempts multiple escapes in order to be reunited. MADE IN DAGENHAM — Practically a remake of “Norma Rae,” this fact-based period drama is set in 1960 England when underpaid female textile workers went on strike demanding equal pay. There’s already strong Oscar buzz for Sally Hawkins and Miranda Richardson. THE TEMPEST — If

it’s anything like “Titus,” expect director Julie Taymor’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s final play to be controversial, electrifying, mind-bending and visually stunning. TRON: LEGACY — The decades-delayed sequel to an original that wasn’t all that great to begin with catches up with original leading man Jeff Bridges who has been stuck in a computer program and could be sprung by the son he’s never met. YOGI BEAR — Based on the trailer, this looks to be another tired, overblown, unfunny, heavy CGI retooling of yet another borderline ’60s cartoon series trying way too hard to be hip. Dan Aykroyd voices the title character with Justin Timberlake tagging along as trusty sidekick BooBoo. For more of the Holiday movie preview, see Page 13.

Clockwise from top left, Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw star in “Country Strong,” Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller star in “Little Fockers,” Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp star in “The Tourist” and Natalie Portman stars in “Black Swan.”

HOLIDAY MOVIE PREVIEW Dec. 22 GULLIVER’S TRAVELS — In this “reimagining” of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novel, Jack Black lands in a strange land populated by 6-inch tall inhabitants who take him prisoner and tie him up on a beach.

LITTLE FOCKERS — This second sequel to “Meet the Parents” looks exactly like the last one which is probably a good idea. Hollywood rarely tinkers with winning formulas. Fans of the franchise will be glad to hear the entire principal cast will reprise their roles.

SOMEWHERE — Sofia Coppola’s latest bears quite a strong resemblance to her moody Oscar-winning “Lost in Translation.” Atlanta native Stephen Dorff takes the lead playing a popular action star who is starting to doubt whether or not he’s happy with fame and riches.

Dec. 25 THE COMPANY MEN — In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, three newly unemployed white collar business men (Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper) must come to terms with their bruised egos, fragile family lives and starting over again. THE KING’S SPEECH — The story of King George VI (Colin Firth) and his sudden ascension to the British throne is already being heralded by most who have seen it as the front-runner for next year’s Oscars. The stellar cast also includes Guy Pearce, Helena BonhamCarter and Geoffrey Rush.

death of their young child.

power-wielding conservative ’80s lobbyist whose unbridled greed and gargantuan ego brought him and scores of others crashing down.

TRUE GRIT — For their first remake, the Coen Brothers overhaul what was just an average 1969 Western and seemed to have turned it into a riveting black comedy thriller. The cast includes Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and, playing the same character that delivered John Wayne his only Oscar, Jeff Bridges.

Dec. 31 ALL GOOD THINGS — Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst are the leads in this long-delayed factbased romantic thriller about one of the most infamous unsolved murder mysteries in U.S. history.

Dec. 29 CASINO JACK — With full-blown, Oscar-seeking Jan. 7 fervor, Kevin Spacey stars as BLUE VALENTINE — Jack Abramoff, the once Recalling “91⁄2 Weeks,” this

RABBIT HOLE — If the trailers are at all accurate, expect to get real bummed out after watching this tear-jerker about a married couple (Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart) who must move on after the

erotic, sexually-charged, NC-17 rated drama traces five tumultuous years in the life of a married couple (Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams). COUNTRY STRONG — Gwyneth Paltrow gets the chance to flex her considerable pipes when she plays an alcoholic country singer who bottoms out, doesn’t quite do the rehab thing and attempts a comeback. Tim McGraw co-stars as manger/husband. SEASON OF THE WITCH — In the wake of

the dismal and underwhelming “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” Nicolas Cage again plays a time-travelling wizard, this time in the 14th century waging war against the Black Plague.

Jan. 14 THE GREEN HORNET — The long-in-development pet project of producer and leading man Seth Rogen has already come under fire from fans of the comic book and TV series who think he’s unsuitable for the role of the svelte and debonair crimefighting title character.
