Reasons

S

Why Summer Camp Is A Good Choice For Kids

ummer vacation offers students a respite from lessons and the routine of school. Children might once have eagerly awaited those final days of classes so they could lounge poolside, skip rocks across ponds and spend the long days of the season playing with friends. But many of today’s youngsters spend much of their summer vacations indoors playing with their digital devices.

following are five reasons why summer camp might be the right fit this year.

Perhaps that’s why one of the last vestiges of the classic summer vacation escape — summer camp — remains such a viable option for parents who want their children to get outdoors once the school year ends.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Lots of camps build their itineraries around physical activities that takes place outdoors. Campers may spend their time swimming, running, hiking, playing sports, climbing, and so much more. This can be a welcome change for kids accustomed to living sedentary lifestyles. Regular physical activity has many health benefits and can set a foundation for healthy habits as an adult.

Although kids needn’t be in camp all summer long, a week or two can benefit campers of all ages. The

1. EXPLORE TALENTS. Summer camps help young people explore their unique interests and talents. Under an organized, yet often easygoing, camp schedule, kids can dabble in sports, arts and crafts, leadership, community support, and so many other activities that may not be fully available to them elsewhere.

QUESTIONS C

hoosing the right camp for your child can be a challenge. Here are some of the best questions that you should ask a camp director about his or her camp.

1. UNDERSTAND THE BASICS. Is this a single-gender or co-ed camp? How long are the sessions? How does the camp handle teasing & bullying? What is the camp’s counselor-to-camper ratio? What are the pricing options? 2. WHAT ARE THE CAMP’S CORE VALUES AND/OR MISSION? What does the camp strive to add to the life of each camper, and do their values match those of your family? Every camp should know their primary goals for the lessons that their campers will pick up during camp, those goals should match your own.

4  SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

3. GAIN CONFIDENCE. Day and sleep-away camps offer campers the opportunity to get comfortable in their own skin. Camps can foster activities in self-esteem by removing the academic measures of success and fill in with noncompetitive opportunities to succeed. Campers learn independence, decision-making skills and the ability to thrive outside of the shadow of their parents, siblings or other students. 4. TRY NEW THINGS. Camp gives children the chance to try new things, whether that’s learning to cook, exploring new environments or embracing a new sport or leisure activity. Opening oneself up to new opportunities can build character and prove enlightening for children. 5. MAKE NEW FRIENDS. Camp is a great place to meet new people and make lifelong friends. Campers flood in from areas near and far. This provides kids with a chance to expand their social circles beyond their immediate neighborhoods and schools. Camps benefit children in a variety of ways. Lessons learned in camp can strengthen values, build confidence, develop coping mechanisms when adversity strikes, and enable campers to make lifelong friends.

To Ask The Director When Choosing A Camp 3. WHO TENDS TO THRIVE HERE…AND WHO DOESN’T? This answer should tell you a lot. No camp should be all things to all people, so a good camp director should have a thoughtful answer to this question. 4. WHERE DO YOUR COUNSELORS COME FROM? A camp is only as good as its role models, so you should feel confident in the process a camp uses to hire its counselors. 5. HOW DO YOU TRAIN YOUR STAFF? Some camps do shockingly little in this department. How long is the camp’s staff

training? Do they bring in recognized experts? Asking to see the staff handbook can tell you a lot about who will be supervising your child during his or her session. 6. HOW IS THE CAMP DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHERS YOU ARE LOOKING AT? What makes this camp different? A thoughtful camp director should be able to tell you how their mission, values, approach to staffing, and camp community set them apart from other camps in their area. Good Luck finding the right camp for your family.

Theatre Camp is Enriching Lives By Beth Slaughter Sexton, Staff Correspondent

O

ne only has to look at Carson Skidmore’s theatre resume to see this young man is talented, accomplished and ambitious— and it was summer theatre camp at The Aurora that first gave him a big push. “I was in middle school and this was the first theatre camp I’d ever been to,” the Gwinnett County native said. “It was a good start because one of the most important things about it was learning that, ‘O.K., here it is outside of school. Here’s how things run. Here’s what I can do...Here’s how theatre is in the real world.’” His theatre education in school began in 5th grade when he said he auditioned for chorus as a way to make friends and get involved. “I remember at the audition, it’s funny to say that now because it was 5th grade and the bare bones of an audition,” he said. “But I remember doing all these crazy voices and accents and our chorus teacher was, ‘Wow, Carson. Where was all this?’” He loved watching movies and impersonating the characters and often entertained his friends by sounding like Obi-Wan Kenobi and C-3PO of Star Wars. Skidmore, the son of Chip and Kathy Skidmore of Lawrenceville, graduated from Rock Springs Elementary, Creekland Middle and was a 2019 6  SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

honor graduate at MARCIGLIANO PHOTOGRAPHY Collins Hill High School. While he continued to perform after that 5th grade chorus program, it was on stage at CHHS that he took his skills to another level. High school audiences awarded standing ovations to his castmates and Skidmore for his portrayal of Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors; Harlequin in Changes of Heart; the baker from Into the Woods; multiple characters in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Unabridged; Link Larson in Hairspray; Dr. Galen Gray in Anatomy of Gray; part of the ensemble in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and Lord Farquaad in Shrek. He’s taken part in many other theatre productions, festivals and camps and is already making his mark as a freshman at Columbus State University where he’s played Wilbur in Charlotte’s Web; the butler in The Importance of Being Earnest and will soon star as Jessie Tuck in Tuck Everlasting. Now majoring in theatre, Skidmore said he has fond memories of theatre camp and the friends he made there—some for life and others now re-connecting. He was walking down the hall at Columbus State one day when someone came up to him and said, “Hey, you were in my Aurora camp years ago.” “In theatre camps, you’re all working together,” Skidmore said. “You make connections as friends.”

Tips For Acquiring A Summer Camp Scholarship

T

he majority of camp organizations offer some type of scholarship opportunity in an effort to make their experience more accessible to all families. So what can you do: 1. START EARLY. Do your research on what summer camps you hope to attend and start making phone calls, plus ask about any unadvertised discounts. 2. CONSIDER CAMPS OUTSIDE YOUR PRICE RANGE. Sticker shock is real, however, you should be evaluating camps on more than just cost. 3. BE FLEXIBLE. If you do qualify for a summer camp scholarship, you might not get first pick on what dates your child will attend camp. 4. BE PREPARED. Camps typically use families latest tax returns to determine summer camp financial aid, so be prepared to provide them.

5. RESPOND PROMPTLY AND ENGAGE the summer camp throughout the process.

8  SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

OTHER WAYS TO PAY FOR CAMP USE YOUR FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT FSA accounts let employees use pre-tax dollars to pay for child care expenses for kids under the age of 13. If enrolling a child in summer day camp allows the parent to work, then the camp tuition qualifies as an eligible expense. USE THE CHILD AND DEPENDENT CARE CREDIT Like the FSA, the Child and Dependent Care Credit gives parents a tax break when they need to pay for child care so they can work. Eligible children must be under 13, live with you for more than six months each year, and depend on you for more than half of their support. This credit will help you at tax time by reducing the amount of money you pay in federal taxes dollar-for-dollar. OUTSIDE SOURCES Don’t forget to check outside sources like your church or local social organizations. They may have a general camp fund they draw from to sponsor local kids who want to attend summer camp.

Summer Campers Turn into Cast Members at

Aurora Theatre W

By Beth Slaughter Sexton, Staff Correspondent

hether it’s Jedi training, heroes and villains, Disneymania or musical theatre bootcamp, Camp Aurora at the Aurora Theatre welcomes kindergarteners through 12th graders to join the many casts of its summer theatre camps. The Aurora offers one-, two- and three-week camps divided by age groups for students on its downtown Lawrenceville campus beginning June 1.

“Acting camps provide students an opportunity to work toward a common goal by learning a variety of skills,” says Renita James, the Aurora’s director of education and summer camp director. “Our campers might come in and start their day with improv and then move on to stage combat and then work on choreography or dialects. There’s so much opportunity to learn so many skills and immediately put their newly learned skill to use.” At the end of camp, the students perform in a showcase or present a full performance in front of an audience. Most camps begin daily at 10:30 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., with time out for lunch. The costs range from $300 for a one-week camp; $500 for two weeks

and $625 for three weeks. There are opportunities for scholarship funding and scholarship auditions for the musical theatre camp. June camps include a three-week summer musical camp where 60 students will work to produce the one-hour Disney musical, Moana. Other June camps include Battle Acts, Heroes and Villains, Musical Theatre Bootcamp and Disneymania. July’s camps include a two-week musical theatre camp where students will explore the works of Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of Hamilton. Other July camps include Heroes and Villains—Magic and Mischief Edition and a bi-lingual camp for 1st-5th graders which is taught in English and Spanish for both native and non-native speakers with a performance presented in both languages. Right before summer camps start, The Aurora will offer a Jedi training workshop May 4, where students learn basic combat moves and the Jedi code. For registration and more information on all these camps and events, visit www.auroratheatre.com. “Students can expect to have fun,” James said. “We work hard, but we have a blast.”   SUMMER CAMP GUIDE  9

SUMMER CAMP GUIDE  17

Where do dinosaurs and sloths hang out for the summer? SEE THEM ALL AT FERNBANK By Beth Slaughter Sexton, Staff Correspondent

W

ith already so much to see and do at Fernbank, visitors are in for a special treat this summer as new exhibits, activities and live animals help make the home of the world's largest dinosaurs such an exciting place to spend the day, the week—or the season. Membership does indeed have its perks and a special benefit for members of Fernbank Museum of Natural History is having first choice in choosing a weekly camp for their kids. There are only a few spots left as summer camps fill up quickly for young explorers and scientists at Fernbank. But not to worry. There are plenty of museum opportunities to enjoy throughout the summer, including outdoor exploration and activities along its 75 acres of wooded trails and fun in the Fernbank Forest. No matter the weather, Fernbank offers as much to do inside as it does outside. “We have three floors of exhibits of science, fossils, dinosaurs,” Brandi Berry, Fernbank’s vice president of marketing said. “…We’ve had live animal exhibits before, but this may be the first time we’ve had mammals. We’ve had frogs and reptiles, 18  SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

but everybody loves a furry cute animal. We’ll be able to bring out some of the animals and have an encounter with our visitors. I think it will be a lot of fun.” With such titles as “Nature’s Ninjas” and “Survival of the Slowest,” the two newest live animal exhibits promise to entertain while teaching “you can be fast or slow, nature finds a way to survive,” according to Fernbank’s Allison Trice. Trice, who is vice president of membership and guest services said there will be a variety of animals for guests to enjoy, but one that is getting a lot of buzz is the sloth. Not just a cartoon character any more, the sloth is making its live Fernbank debut this summer.
