Sponsors are festival, community heroes There’s nothing like an economic downturn to serve as a reminder of the critical importance of event sponsors. Despite the economy, these generous, community-minded sponsors stepped up in 2010 to ensure that Suwanee’s annual “celebration of community” continues to be a high-quality event. This year, especially, please be sure to thank these sponsors with your patronage.

Hugs for Soldiers embraces Suwanee Day An Outreach Ministry of Duluth First United Methodist Church aving grown up as an Army brat and then marrying a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, Angie Doerlich had very personal reasons for founding Hugs for Soldiers in 2003. An outreach ministry of Duluth First United Methodist Church, Hugs for Soldiers supports troops who are deployed overseas. The program is, accord-
H
ing to its website, “dedicated to offering comforts from home and brightening a soldier’s day with a care package, card, or personal letter of encouragement.” The organization provides an avenue for citizens to demonstrate support for those serving in the military and their families, especially during holidays. The ways in which Hugs for Soldiers supports members of the U.S. military are impressive and varied and include writing cards and letters to servicemen and women, coordinating prayers with various faithbased organizations, col-
lecting cash donations to provide care packages to the troops, and organizing fundraising opportunities in conjunction with local service organizations. Hugs for Soldiers played a significant role in last year’s festival and will do so again this year. The group has coordinated the participation of 2-69 Armor “Panther” soldiers from Fort Benning. In addition to leading the 10 a.m. parade, the soldiers will be at the Hugs for Soldiers booth throughout the festival, receive special recognition from the City of Suwanee, and attend a special dinner
in their honor hosted by Ippolito’s. Also, a couple of the soldiers will stage a brief performance prior to the 8:15 John Berry concert. For more information about Hugs for Soldiers or to get involved, visit www.hugsforsoldiers.org.

Army vet to ride at front of parade by Todd Renner, Suwanee Day Marketing Chair hen the Suwanee Day festival welcomed about 50 soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 2-69 Armor Battalion based at Fort Benning last year, it was a bit bittersweet as the soldiers were to ship out a few short weeks following the festival for a tour of duty in Iraq. This year, Suwanee Day welcomes back soldiers from the 2-69 with an attitude of gratitude, relief, and celebration as the soldiers are returning from their nearly yearlong deployment as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Leading the group this year and serving as the 2010 honorary grand marshal is Capt. Lars Harstad, the battalion’s rear detachment commander, who is standing in for Lt. Col.
W
Capt. Lars Harstad
Robert Ashe (last year’s grand marshal), who still is deployed in Iraq but will be returning stateside shortly. During his 12 years of service to his nation, Harstad has received numerous awards and honors, including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Drill Sergeant Badge, and Parachutist Badge to name just a few. Harstad also has held many positions during his Army career. As a drill sergeant for three years
(one as senior drill sergeant), he trained more than 2,000 soldiers. As a military transition team member, he conducted about 80 combat patrols with the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps and trained more than 400 Iraqi soldiers in Kirkuk, Baquoba, and Tikrit. Joining Harstad will be his wife and two of his four children. Also in attendance will be Ashe's wife, Andrea, and their two children. In addition to marching in the parade, the approximately 50 soldiers of the 269 Armor attending Suwanee Day will receive special recognition both after the parade and before the 8:15 p.m. John Berry performance. The soldiers’ presence at Suwanee Day is made possible through Hugs for Soldiers. Learn more at www.HugsForSoldiers.org

ower balladeer John Berry, noted for the intense passion he has brought to such hits as “Your Love Amazes Me” and “Standing on the Edge of Goodbye,” will headline a varied Suwanee Day entertainment lineup with an 8:15 p.m. performance. Berry had a string of country hits in the mid1990s. He continues to record and tour today and his annual Christmas concerts remain extremely popular. Born in South Carolina and raised in Georgia, Berry kick-started his career 30 years ago by recording his own albums and performing
solo acoustic shows throughout northeast Georgia, including performances in the parking lot of Sanford Stadium after University of Georgia home football games. He quickly became a regional favorite. Berry made his majorlabel debut in 1993. In addition to the songs mentioned above, Berry hit the charts with “A Mind of Her Own,” “Kiss Me in the Car,” “What’s in It for Me,” “You and Only You,” “I Think About It All the Time,” “Change My Mind,” “I Will If You Will,” and “She’s Taken a Shine.” A fireworks display will immediately follow Berry’s performance.

Suwanee Day will entertain you T
he 2010 Suwanee Day entertainment line-up offers a selection of rhythms and styles, from an easygoing country flavor to the smooth harmony of a women’s a capella barbershop-style chorus, from the enthusiastic chants of national champion cheerleaders to the sounds of nature that are an integral part of Andean music. More than a dozen organizations and performers will take the Town Center stage throughout the festival. Atlanta JayHawks – 11:30 am The national champion Atlanta JayHawks cheerleading and dance teams are proud to call Cheer & Dance Atlanta, located in Duluth, home. The JayHawks perform locally and compete regional-
ly and nationally. The Dance Loft – 12:15 pm Creativity, artistry, and individuality are celebrated at The Dance Loft, located in downtown Suwanee. Students will offer performances in a sampling of The Dance Loft classes, which cover all areas of dance and music, from classical ballet to hip-hop and from musical theater to singing. Magical Fires of Polynesia – 1 pm Based in Augusta, Magical Fires of Polynesia is a family group that shares Polynesian culture and artistry throughout the Southeast. The group’s performances include songs and dances from various Polynesian islands, including Hawaii, Fiji, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Samoa, and Tahiti. Tiger Martial Arts – 1:45 pm Tiger Martial Arts students,
both children and adults, will demonstrate combat and selfdefense techniques associated with Tae Kwon Do, one of the world’s most popular martial arts forms and the national sport of South Korea. Atlanta Harmony Celebration! – 2:15 pm A women’s four-part a capella barbershop chorus, Atlanta Harmony Celebration! has qualified for internationallevel competition the past four years. Formed in Gwinnett County in 2003, the group is dedicated to performing at its highest level and promoting an understanding of the barbershop art form throughout north Georgia. North Gwinnett Schools Foundation: 15 Minutes of Fame – 2:55 pm A perennial favorite item at
the North Gwinnett Schools Foundation auction, this year’s “15 Minutes of Fame” will feature North Gwinnett Middle School student Claire Willingham. Llajtasuyo – 3:20 pm Based in Atlanta, Llajtasuyo performs the music that members grew up with: Andean music. This unique, melodydriven music is created by instruments that replicate sounds of nature, such as that of air going through the Andes Mountains, the summer rain or a waterfall, or animals and insects found in the tropics. Shadowbrook Church Praise Band – 4 pm This band has a long history in the Suwanee community, performing at Suwanee Day, neighborhood gatherings, the annual Easter sunrise service, and school banquets. The praise band plays contemporary Christian music, hymns,
oldies rock and roll, and more. Fisheye – 5 pm Warm, easygoing, countryflavored acoustic rock is Fisheye's specialty, according to Jeff Clark with the website Stomp and Stammer. The band’s four members blend talented vocals and instrumentals with rhythm and harmony. Fisheye has produced two CDs, Bigger Than Your Head and A Totally Different Disaster. Wild Wing’s Battle of the Bands Winner: Square One – 6 pm Square One took the crown in the 2010 Wild Wing Battle of the Bands competition. With its victory, Square One earned the right to perform at Suwanee Day. Edens Edge – 7 pm This talented trio
offers a unique musical blend deeply rooted in country and bluegrass. Between opening dates this summer for A-list artists such as Lady Antebellum, LoneStar, and Gloriana, Edens Edge has been writing and recording its Big Machine Records debut with the creative direction of Kye Fleming Publishing.

early 200 exhibitors and vendors will fill Town Center Park on September 18. They’ll offer a tempting array of fine art, handmade crafts, inflatable fun, and festival food. The cornerstone of the Suwanee Day festival are those exhibitors who use their hands – and their imaginations – to create hundreds of unique items. Here you’ll meet three of the artisans who will be at the 2010 festival.

Refiguring flatware Peggy & Grady Nolan Long-time Suwanee Day vendors Peggy and Grady Nolan have “carved out” a unique niche with knives – forks and spoons, too – turning vintage flatware into handcrafted treasures. The couple refashions silver-plated flatware into beautiful jewelry pieces, including bracelets, necklaces, watches, and earrings. In addition, the Nolans craft wind chimes, lamps, and bud vases utilizing teapots, creamers, and sugar bowls. Although she can’t remember exactly where,
it was Peggy Nolan who first came across this art style and felt that she could recreate it. She asked her husband for a little assistance, and now, she chuckles, “Well, that was the end of it for me.” Grady Nolan eventually took over the artwork and has been producing these unique pieces for a decade. In addition to their own design ideas, Peggy Nolan says that a lot of ideas come from customers. “We love the interaction with the people in the design process.” The Nolans, who live in Demorest, Georgia,
are both retired – Peggy from years of service as a customer service representative at Standard Telephone Company (now owned by Alltel) and Grady from the U.S. Forest Service. “Suwanee Day is our favorite show,” Peggy Nolan says, noting that it was their daughter-in-law, who lives in the Suwanee area, who first made them aware of the festival. This year marks the Nolans’ tenth Suwanee Day. Known for keeping their prices low, the Nolans won’t disappoint this year, keeping prices in a range from $6 to $45.

Just four years ago Duke received a kidney transplant, which in and of itself would significantly impact anyone’s
outlook on life. However, it was the donor’s humanity that exceeded his imagination. After learning of his plight, Duke’s donor, a stranger to him, got tested specifically to determine if she was a match with him. Results showed that the only way that they could be a closer match is if they were twins. This uncommon act of kindness helps Duke tell a compelling story about everyday things via his paintings. Duke became a fulltime artist after losing his job in the printing industry, where he had worked for 20 years. “I was initially told to do birds on beaches,” says Duke about advice received in those early days. While his initial interest was in surrealism – things bigger than life – the artist’s primary focus today is on “realism with just enough abstract to make it art.” Subjects for his works are diverse, ranging from pets to flora. Watercolors are Duke’s medium of choice, but he also does pencil portraits with graphite and color, etchings, and silk screens. “I tend to take photographs of things
that interest me – different locations in nature to everyday things.” Now in good health thanks to the kindness of a local stranger, it’s easy to appreciate Duke’s keen interest in the beauty of the things around him. Duke has been a part of the Suwanee art scene recently, participating in an Art Walk event at Town Center in July.
