DINING GWINNETTTASTES A selection of local eateries recently featured in the Gwinnett Daily Post: • Macky’s Carribean Cuisine The restaurant serves typical Carribean food, including the popular oxtail and jerk chicken dishes. The most popular dish is jerk chicken, marinated in Jamaican jerk spice and specially cooked in a charcoal grill for an original smoky flavor. Many different types of meat dishes are served with peas and rice or white rice, fried plantains and a choice of vegetables or McLeen’s special potato salad recipe. Most drinks are unique and can’t be found on a typical grocery store shelf, like Ting, a carbonated grapefruit beverage, and Agua De Coco, or coconut water. 1215 Scenic Highway,

• The Palace The restaurant offers authentic North Indian cuisine with Matron Manju Kothary in charge of the food using skills taught by her mother and mother-inlaw. Lunch is a buffet with three meat dishes and five vegetable dishes selected by Manju who varies it daily. One Sunday a month, they offer buffet food from an Indian state whose food they don’t normally serve. Dinner is sit-down a la carte, offering an even mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian (but no beef) options. They serve a wide selection of popular Indian dishes like biryanis (rice), curries and paneer (cheese). For kids, there are mild dishes. 6131 Peachtree Parkway N.W., Norcross. 770-840-

• Pizza Pub The menu provides customers typical American food with a real focus on pizza and wings. The pizza is made with a special sauce from the previous owners that gives it a unique flavor, and comes in specialty forms like barbecue chicken and chicken alfredo. Pizza Pub also offer salads like the popular Greek chicken and recently started soup/salad combos. Lunch specials, seafood and burgers and sandwiches are also available, but people mainly come in for the pizza and wings. 554 W. Main St., Building E, Buford. 770-831-0272. www.thepizzapub.biz

• From Page 3 • Maya Fresh Grill Co-owner Guillermo Gonzalez-Patron calls the cuisine offered by Maya Fresh Grill a north and south Latin fusion. The restaurant’s menu is a combination of Mexican dishes — tacos (listed on the menu as takkos), burritos and quesadillas — and American selections — burgers with a Latin flavor, hot wings with a twist. The menu was influenced by Gonzalez-Patron’s parentage — his mother is from the southern part of Mexico, where food is flavorful, bold and spicy, while his father hails from the north, where the cuisine is more tame, often served plain and grilled. Combining the two — grilled selections with flavor — Maya Fresh Grill offers the best of both worlds. 960 Pleasant Hill Road, Suite A, Lawrenceville. 770279-3748. www.mayafreshgrill.com • Olive’s Oven and Grill While pizza is certainly on the menu, Olive’s Oven and Grill is more than a pizzeria. The restaurant offers madefrom-scratch Italian and American cuisine with the most popular selections falling under the categories of paninis and wraps. The Olive’s panini is a popular menu item, along with the Greek wrap and the Good Old Boy burger. Olive’s specials change every three months to coincide with the current season. Summer specials include the Sicilian chicken flatbread made with grilled chicken, roasted eggplant, roasted tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. 1386 Indian Trail-Lilburn Road, Suite 300, Norcross. 770-935-2611. www.olivesoven.com • Barnacles Changes in ownership at Barnacles resulted in a downsizing of the restaurant’s menu and a shift from the original focus on

All food is cooked to order so customers can expect a minimum 10 minute wait. Bushels Seafood Cafe also serves a variety of fish — flounder, grouper, red snapper, catfish, salmon and tilapia — lobster, alligator tail, gumbo, chicken fingers, burgers, po’ boys, wings and a bevy of sides, including corn on the cob, hush puppies, fried okra, green beans, potato salad and more. 1495-G Duluth Highway 120, Lawrenceville. 770910-7710. www.bushelscafe.com • Gimza Polish Restaurant The menu at Gimza Polish Restaurant changes daily, but the focus on freshly prepared, authentic Polish food remains consistent. ARTS Music festival in Duluth features lineup of Ga. musicians The Duluth Festival Center Amphitheater Stage will showcase nine musical acts beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday in what is hopefully the first year of many for the Duluth Music Festival. What is special about this festival is that all the performers are Georgians and they represent a variety of musical styles. Best of all, there is no admission fee. The fun isn’t just on the stage, however. The entire Duluth Town Green will be filled with fun things to see and do for the whole family. For example, from 2 until 8 p.m. the “Kid’s Zone” will offer young ones pony rides, inflatables, games, activities, a Kindermusik demonstration, face painting and more. From 3 until 6 p.m., Open Mic Atlanta will be on-site to host a special stage for aspiring vocalists and other musicians. But get there early to sign up for a performing time! Of course, there will be food. Vendors will be serving American, Asian, Mexican, Caribbean and

Jamaican cuisine. (Beer and wine cannot be brought into the park but will be available for purchase at the festival.) Specialty vendors will be on hand as well for your “shopping pleasure.” But the spotlight is on the music itself. Beginning at 2 p.m. a roster of diverse musical acts will entertain the crowd on the main Festival Stage. First up is Katelyn Pope, a 15-yearold country singer from Powder Springs. Her debut album, “Unshaken,” was released May 1. Visit her at www.myspace.com/katelynpopemusic. At 3 p.m. the mic will be turned over to ZAKA and her style of “glam rock.” Also known as Kate

Powell, ZAKA was inspired by David Bowie, Grace Jones and Lady Gaga to name a few. Check her out at www.myspace.com/kateka. The Green Flag Band performs at 4 p.m. This Celtic folk group is Athens-based and stays “close to the heart” of traditional Irish and Celtic music. Visit them at www.greenflagband.com. The Metro Jazz Club will take the stage at 5 p.m. This 17-piece band plays many different types of jazz and features vocalist Maxine Cummins. For more about them, visit www.metrojazzclub.com. The 6 p.m. slot will bring James Weaver to the mic with his unique presentation of “rock, surf and country” guitar. He is also an award-winning songwriter. Visit him at www.jwsmusic.com. Angel “La Tumba” Estrella will hit the stage at 7 p.m. Raised in various parts of the world, Estrella is billed as a reggae/tumba artist and is the pride of the Dominican Republic.

Learn more about him at www.tumbamusic.com. Valentine and West will perform at 8 p.m. as a hip hop/pop act, featuring Atlanta and Athens citywide “Battle Rap Champion” Tommy Valentine. Visit www.valentine-

andwest.com for more about this dynamic team. The final act at 9 p.m. will be Gary Harris and Friends performing R&B, jazz and pop. This group has performed at the legendary Café 290 and has been featured on CNN

and PBS. Visit www.cafe290atlanta.com for more information. Holley Calmes is a freelance writer and public relations consultant specializing in the arts. E-mail her at hcalmes@mindspring.com.

LOCAL EVENT

2 local musicians to perform at 106 West Levi Lowrey, Clay Cook to take stage together in Winder BY DEANNA ALLEN STAFF WRITER deanna.allen@ gwinnettdailypost.com

Two singer-songwriters that Gwinnett calls its own will perform together in an event music lovers will not want to miss. Dacula native Levi Lowrey and South Gwinnett grad Clay Cook will take the stage together at the Winder m u s i c venue 106 W e s t tonight. Cook is an accomplished musician Levi who has Lowrey recorded and toured with Sugarland, John Mayer, The Marshall Tucker Band and Shawn Mullins. His latest group gig is playing guitar in the Zac Brown Band, while he still performs solo. Lowrey can trace his musical roots back to his greatgreat-grandfather and Georgia Music Hall of Famer Gid Tanner and has been making music since he was a child. His signature brand of alternative country drew a standing room-only crowd to 106 West the last time he played there in January. “It was just an electrifying show,” said Becky Tollerson. She and her husband, Thom, manage the Winder music venue, where Lowrey played as a teen and as a young man. Friday evening’s perfor-

Lowrey will return Saturday night for a show with The Community House Band, the group he started in 2006 that’s named after the Harbin’s Community House in Dacula. “Drummer Daniel McGill and bassist Jon Daws ... Smooth tunes Singer Anthony Hamilton to bring soulful sounds to Chastain BY TORI BOONE COPY EDITOR tori.boone@gwinnettdailypost.com

Anthony Hamilton knows soulful music. The Grammy Award-winning R&B singer said growing up in church in Charlotte, N.C., helped him learn to appreciate the emotion and

feelings in songs. “We had a lot of Baptist churches and radio played more stuff that was Southern driven like Al Green and Gladys Knight and all the good stuff,” Hamilton said during a recent interview. “And with the church stuff — it had a lot of heart and soul in it, so it was all easy listening and lots of emotion, so it allowed me

His three children are out on the road with him now and he said they love it (Hamilton and his wife are expecting twin boys in the fall). But it wasn’t always so easy for Hamilton. His biological father left when he was young and his mother suffered from alcoholism. His

mother eventually remarried and Hamilton said he got that father figure in his life that he always wanted. He has since reconciled with both parents and said he definitely draws from those experiences and puts it in his music. “It’s like I never really lost them, so I can speak

about the pain from both sides and the joys from both sides,” he said. It’s with those experiences that Hamilton feels he’s been successful and so relatable to the public with his music. And with that, he said he plans to be around for a long time. “I just do what I do and

know that great songs can open up doors that wouldn’t normally open up for you,” he said. “So if you have a great song, whether it’s R&B, country or rap, it’ll open up a door because people want to hear a great song with a great story. Just staying true to that and myself — it’s been working.”

FALL MOVIE PREVIEW

FALL features

This season’s roster filled with action, comedy, horror At this point we’re just about three-quarters of the way through the year and the consensus of virtually every critic and industry insider is about the same: 2010 is the worst year for movies in nearly half a century. There has been a scant few memorable releases (most of them animated) and the majority of what Hollywood has served up so far is horrifyingly subpar. The good news (in theory) is that the last four months of the year is when the industry carts out its most promising (read: award-seeking) titles. For people who don’t care much for serious, browfurrowing, Oscar-hopeful dramas, there’s more good news. This fall’s roster is heavily peppered with lots of action, comedy and horror titles. There’s also just a handful of sequels and at least one bona fide, fourstar masterpiece (“Red”

As always, all opening dates are subject to change. Sept. 1 “THE AMERICAN” — George Clooney is back in the action/adventure saddle again with this thriller in which he plays an assassin trying to com-

plete his final assignment in Italy before retiring. Sept. 3 “GOING THE DISTANCE” — Real-life off/on partners Justin Long and Drew Barrymore play a couple trying to maintain a bi-coastal, long-distance relationship in this romantic comedy. “MACHETE” — Robert Rodriguez directs Danny Trejo (as the title character), Robert de Niro (as a U.S. Senator) and Lindsay Lohan (as a nun!) in what will surely be a non-stop action bloodbath. Sept. 10 “I’M STILL HERE” — Casey Affleck makes his directorial debut with this documentary centering on the personal and professional meltdown of actor Joaquin Phoenix.

Clockwise from top left, Helen Mirren stars in “Red,” Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristen Bell and Betty White star in “You Again,” Daniel Radcliffe stars in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1,” Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr. star in “Due Date” and Justin Long and Drew Barrymore star in “Going the Distance.”

Atlanta rapper T.I. stars in heist film ‘Takers’ FROM STAFF REPORTS T.I. is back in the spotlight — but not for his legal troubles. After spending almost a year in jail for felony weapons charges, the Atlanta rapper-turned-actor is returning to the big screen with his third film. “Takers,” which opens today, also stars Idris Elba, Paul Walker and Hayden Christensen. The film centers around longtime friends who live an extravagant lifestyle by robbing banks, but only once a year, and have always avoided being caught. But their latest successful heist, worth $2 million, attracts the attention of LAPD detective Jack Welles, played by Oscar nominee Matt Dillon. Welles makes it his mission to try and nab the crew of thieves. T.I. plays Ghost, the only member of the crew arrested for an earlier heist. Upon his release from jail, he offers his friends one more job worth $12 million, but it has to happen within five days

or it will evaporate. Although T.I. said his character isn’t necessarily a positive role model for his fans, he wants the public to learn to separate art from life and fact from fiction. “I don’t think I should be held any more accountable for the character I play in ‘Takers’ than Arnold

Schwarzenegger should be held for doing ‘Terminator’ or him playing ‘Commando’ or any of these other violent characters that any other actor has played,” T.I. said during a recent teleconference interview. “No one questions Pacino’s values for playing Scarface, so

what makes me any different? I’m an actor. I’m really just being used to tell a story and to convey a message — the message of the writer of the script.” With Ghost’s moral standards in question throughout the film, T.I. said he still admires some things about his troubled character. “I like his ambition. I like the fact that Ghost refuses to take no for an answer,” he said. “I like that Ghost is looking to top himself in every way. Everything that he has done — he’s looking to do better.” Along with lending his acting skills to the project, T.I. also has a song featured

in the film and on the “Takers” soundtrack. He said the single “Yeah Ya Know” wasn’t written specifically for the film, but once it was finished in the studio, it seemed to fit best. “I was just recording records, working on my album (due out Sept. 28) and I went into the studio and played a selection of three or four records,” T.I. said. “‘Yeah Ya Know’ was the song that (the producers and director) felt best embodied the energy and the symmetry of all the action from the film, and they felt that was the one that was best integrated into the film.”

Aniston acted as a foil to his story, instead of being the main attraction. Love of a good book has the power to change lives. This is a belief shared by the foursome behind the latest festival to be added to Suwanee’s busy events calendar — a community-wide celebration of reading, writing and literacy. Organized entirely by volunteers, the Suwanee Festival of Books owes its creation to four co-founders — author and publisher Nicole Smith, Kolinda Scialabba, president and CEO of She Writes LLC, Georgia School Book Fairs owner Jay Devries and Barry Coates, owner of Knowledge Point in Suwanee. This weekend’s inaugural event is a project that has been officially in the works since October and stemmed from a desire to offer the community something new and unique. “Suwanee is such a great town and has so many wonderful festival offerings, but it was missing one related to books and authors,” Scialabba said. “A book festival gives us an opportunity to grow as a community of readers and writers. It sends a strong message, especially to our children, that we recognize and value the power of the written word.” For Smith, the two-day event is an opportunity to showcase the talents of local and regional authors. “Many of us have a story to tell, but writers take it a step further and write, so others receive encouragement, inspiration, education, entertainment and more,” she said. “Writing is a way the author and the readers connect with each other over a message. If a book’s message is strong enough and is

Saturday’s keynote speakers is award-winning Georgia author Terry Kay, who will make a presentation at 2 p.m. “His prolific writing and advocacy of literacy combined to make him the perfect keynote choice,” Scialabba said. “As the 2009 recipient of the Governor’s Award in the Humanities, and a 2006 inductee into the Georgia Writer’s Hall of Fame, Terry Kay is one of Georgia’s finest writers of all time. To have him join us for the festival is a true honor.” Giving Sunday’s keynote presentations is writer and entrepreneur Rick Smith, who will also present at 2 p.m. “He’s had an incredible career an innovative business man and his book describes how people can make the leap to a career they’ve always dreamed of,” Scialabba said. “In these hard economic times, we wanted to bring his message of inspiration and innovation to the community.” Some of the other well-known authors who are expected to attend the festival are New York Times bestselling author Patti
