Private School Public School
T
hese days the major concern of any parent is the education of their children. They start getting tense as soon as their children reach the school going age. Nowadays most of the American parents send their children to public schools but there is also a significant increase in parents who choose private schools. Amidst these schools are also increasing. Although parents generally like to enroll their child in Christian school depending on their beliefs, thinking and neighborhood but still there is confusion in choosing the best school for the child. The majority of children can excel in either public or private school. The choice between the two depends on the options offered and the price of enrollment. When making the choice between public or private schooling, consider all your available options. The major deterrent regarding Christian schools is the expense of tuition. You will have to consider your budget and look for scholarships that many schools offer. Thankfully, most private schools offer financial assistance or are willing to discuss the topic of tuition with parents. Many schools offer discounts on tuition if parents are willing to spend some time to assist in functions or activities. Christian schools impart religious instruction as part of the curriculum. If you desire to give religious awareness to your child and are not happy with public schooling, you will find a Christian school to be the perfect choice. If you are not a Christian but would like to incorporate religion into your child’s 10
Gwinnett Parents
life, you can look at other options in your community. The reason behind choosing private schools over other schools is that all parents want best education for their children. It has been evident that children with learning disabilities perform outstandingly well in a private school. Private schools generally have good teacher to student ratio that helps them to interact with one or more students at one go. When looking towards the future, private high schools tend to have a better placement rate in colleges and universities all over the nation. Certain private schools are associated with top level colleges and universities, including the coveted Ivy league schools. These private institutions are more like college preparatory schools instead of traditional high schools. Due to the programs like art, drama, sports, science, literature, mathematics, civics and music many children choose Christian schools. With the financial constraints and funding problems many public schools have reduced these specialized programs. Children at public schools generally find themselves at a disadvantage due to the absence of many important programs. So it is advisable to choose a school that fulfills your wards needs and curiosities and makes him or her successful academically and even in extracurricular activities. Finally when you have decided to enroll your child in Christian school rather than in a public school make a note of your child’s liking and opinion. As he is the one who will be attending the school. Look out for options in and around the area and only then zero in on the right school.

[ LEARNING & EDUCATION ]
How To Get The Most Out Of Class your time wisely. While you are in class, sit back and learn as much as you can and you will almost certainly get better grades and have more free time.
1
. If possible, try to sit near the front to eliminate distractions. Teachers will probably not have a problem accommodating you if you ask them to sit you in a specific location in order to help you focus.
2
. Avoid distractions such as chatting with friends, looking around the room, doodling, dozing, and daydreaming. Keep busy by participating in the discussion, asking or answering questions, and taking notes.
3
S
ome students spend too much time studying because they did not take the time to learn what was being taught in class the first time. If you follow these four tips, you will learn how to understand each lesson being taught in class so you will not have to put in extra time studying. This does not mean you will not have to study, but this will become a guide so you can use 12
Gwinnett Parents
. Contribute to classroom discussions. Raising your hand and offering your thoughts or ideas will help the discussion progress, make the teacher notice that you are actively taking a role in your education, and finally, help you sort out what you do and don’t know or fully understand. Try not to feel intimidated about raising your hand and answering questions. Start offering answers to questions or topics that you feel comfortable with and eventually this will become a habit. Eventually you will build enough confidence to contribute on a regular basis.
4
. Listen not only to what the teacher is saying but to what your classmates are contributing to the discussing. You can learn a lot by listening to your peers. Go to www.live-etutor.com to learn more about online tutoring and watch a virtual tour inside of our online classroom. Camps: What’s New for Summer 2008 by Brody PR
S
ummer camps can help children develop new interests, open their minds, choose a new direction, and make lifelong friends. With over 11,000 camps in the United States to choose from, how does a parent decide which is the right program for their child? Tips on Trips and Camps, a free camp advisory service, says that the summer camp industry has changed dramatically in the past few years and parents should learn about the different options in order to make a wise choice. According to Eve Eifler, Co-Director, Tips on Trips and Camps (www.tipsontripsandcamps.com) in Baltimore, MD, these are the camp trends for 2008: Increase in Specialty Camps – Parents 14
Gwinnett Parents
can find offerings such as rock music, creative writing, culinary arts, aviation, fencing, science, foreign language, horseback riding, tennis, golf, sports broadcasting, skateboarding, robotics, and even circus arts. Enrichment Programs For Younger Children - Starting in 4th grade, a child can live at a boarding school or college dorm, eat in a community dining hall, take classes of special interest, participate in recreational activities and take part in organized field trips while they are taking enrichment classes such as Lego engineering and the Science of Superheroes. Short-term “taste of camp” sessions - For the younger child, camps are of

fering short, introductory sessions that could last anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks. Even full season camps are offering 2 week sessions to allow parents to fit in a residential camp experience and other activities during the three-month summer break. Special Needs Camps - Today, many mainstream camps will admit children who are blind or deaf, as well as children with Asperger’s and cerebral palsy. Parents can also find dedicated camps for kids with all sorts of differences, like Prader Willi, Williams Syndrome, Downs Syndrome, and more severe forms of autism. Kids With Allergies - With the rise in allergies, some camps have moved to a peanut free environment to eliminate the risk completely and there are even gluten-free camps for kids with Celiac
disease. “Matching the right summer program to your child’s interest can help them develop life-long passions,” says Ms. Eifler. “Finding the right summer camp for your child can be a major and costly decision. Seek out a camp consultant or do your research online to find the best and most enriching program for your child.” About Tips on Trips and Camps Tips on Trips and Camps (www.tipsontripsandcamps.com) is free summer camp advisory service founded in 1971 with offices in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New York City, St. Louis, Chicago, Philadelphia, Princeton, Westchester, Connecticut, Los Angeles, South Florida and Paris.Call-866-222-TIPS (8477) for more info.

[ HEALTHY MOM ]
Women and Healthy Diets
I
n today’s modern world, women and healthy diets don’t seem to be making time for each other. Whether women are busier now or diets are simply more complicated, that may never be fully understood. What people do understand right now is that women and healthy diets are connected in ways that will affect their future health. Excuses that Women Use... All the Time If you were honest with yourself, the link between women and healthy diets is something you already know. However, you might be suffering from these normal excuses:
- Healthy food doesn’t taste good
- I just don’t have the time to (insert healthy habit here)
But with each excuse, you are pushing yourself further and further away from health and fitness. This is the time to realize that excuses are just that... excuses!
- I’m working longer hours
Creating New Habits Instead
- I’m too tired to cook
What most women don’t realize is that good health doesn’t have to take up a lot of time. By simply looking for ways to increase the nutrition in each day, women and healthy diets can work together – without being inconvenient.
- I deserve some ‘naughty’ foods for working so hard - I don’t want to make separate foods for myself and for my family
- Try adding a multivitamin to each day 24
Gwinnett Parents
www.gwinnettparents.com
to ensure you’re getting the nutrition you need - Add one piece of fruit as an afternoon snack - Add vegetables to every meal
they choose are based on convenience. Here are some ways that you can add convenience to your menu: - Try healthy frozen dinners when you don’t have a lot of time - Cook once a week, freeze the meals in single serve portions and reheat as needed
- Cut down to one drink a day - Try to drink more water each day - Let yourself cheat once a week, or have a smaller treat everyday When you begin to look at your health as being a series of small steps in the right direction, you can see that it’s not that hard or time consuming to start looking after yourself. Convenience Will Win in the End Many healthy women and healthy diets
- Try prepackaged salads and sandwiches - Pack your foods the night before - Only go to restaurants with healthy choices Good and healthy doesn’t have to mean that you’re sacrificing the rest of your life. These changes can apply to all women and healthy diets can affect all women’s lives.

He advises consumers to obtain referrals from trusted associates and to make sure that the dentist is a member of the Georgia Dental Association (Members are listed on the GDA website.) Dr. Lail is a successful father of two sons, 10 year old Carson and 7 year old Garret and of daughter, 4 year old Sidney. While admitting the difficulties of running a practice and raising a family, Dr. Lail remembers that “the practice helps provide for his family but that the children come first at all times.” But in this, he never forgets that the “practice must be nurtured as well.” In addition to being an astounding dentist, Dr. Lail is the 2008 president of the Gwinnett County Rotary Club. [ KIDS’ HEALTH ]
Keeping Oral Health of Children
O
ral hygiene is very important in children as poor oral hygiene may lead to poor health and other kind of dental diseases. The cavities and gum diseases not only affect the physical appearance of a person, but also lead to serious health problems such as insomnia, stroke and even hearing defects. It has been found from the studies that the poor oral care can contribute to the clogging of the arteries, problem of the lungs and even can damage the heart valves. This might be seen when an expectant woman having gum disease, makes a pre-mature deliver or the baby is very much in weight etc. Hence, it is very necessary to start a regular and good dental regime at the early age during childhood to avoid health problems and diseases at a later stage. For taking proper care of the teeth the child should be taught how to brush, clean and floss the teeth 28
Gwinnett Parents
properly.
Ways to keep the child’s oral health in pink: To keep the oral health at its prime, the child should follow all the fundamental steps recommended by almost all the dentists. This avoids the incidence of dental problems like gingivitis, halitosis, tartar and gum diseases. Apart from proper brushing, the other hygienic methods like the right method of flossing and using the mouthwash have to be taught. The American Dental Association even advises the parents of a new born to start
cleaning their newborn child’s mouth within few days after birth. It is very important for the clarity of speech and chewing action in the kids. Parents of young children schedule regular oral health checkups around the first birthday of the kid. A pediatric dentist should be ideal choice for children. The baby’s gums and teeth can be wiped with a wet washcloth after each meal to help removing plaque that gets accumulated on the gums and teeth. Soft bristle toothbrushes with pea sized fluoridated toothpaste can be used www.gwinnettparents.com
to brush the teeth. Also the children should be taught to spit the toothpaste at a very early age and until then the children should use toothpaste without fluorine. Till the kids are good and comfortable doing flossing and brushing, the parents should assist the children. The children should be fed with calcium rich foods and supplements along with a good oral hygiene to maintain good oral health of children. The children can be encouraged to brush by changing the color and appearance of toothpastes. Most of the children do like to brush with fluoride toothpaste but they should be able to spit after brushing. Also, the children need to brush twice a day. Eating snacks made of sugar and carbohydrates needs to be avoided if not at least the teeth should be brushed properly after eating them. It is a good idea to eat nutrition rich food like vegetable, fruits etc instead of sugar candies as they both provide the required nutrition and also strengthens the teeth due to the chewing action.

[ TEEN TALK ]
Role Models for Your Teen
B
y the time your children reach their teens, there is only a limited amount of time left to influence them and get them started in life in the right direction. The teen years are a critical time for role models in your children’s lives. Often you will find teens have a hard time talking to their parents. This isn’t always the case, but even in the closest families, teens often feel more comfortable talking to another trusted adult about some of the things going on in their lives. Of course you would prefer your teen would go to an adult when they need to talk something important out, instead of relying on their friends who may not have the insight an older, more experienced adult would have. 30
Gwinnett Parents
Obviously you have no real control over who your teen goes to for advice, but there are a number of ways you can steer your teen in the right direction. The best chance your teen has for interacting with other adults is in extracurricular activities. There are all kinds of activities your teen can be involved with, here are some that come to mind: church youth group, scouts, sports, music, school clubs, community service, just to name a few. Personally I don’t encourage parents to involve their teens in so many activities that it leads to burnout for both the parents and the teen, but carefully selected activities led by good and capable leaders will enrich your teen’s life in a way few things can, and will increase the likelihood that your teen will establish a relationship with one of the group leaders.
www.gwinnettparents.com
One word of caution, however. Talk to your teen about their activities and get a feel for yourself the effectiveness of the group leader. Not to say that they have to excel in every way, but just make sure that they are a good role model, and not a negative influence in your teen’s life. There is the potential of bad leaders in any activity, including in a church setting, and it is the parents’ responsibility to make sure their teen is in a positive atmosphere, influenced by mature leaders. Involvement in group activities is especially great for teens of single parents. Teens who don’t have regular contact with mature adults of both sexes often have a hard time later in normal adult relationships. Being exposed to “normal” at this age very much increases the teen’s chances of growing into a well-adjusted adult. I have seen this
digital
often with boys who are raised by their moms with not much influence or negative influence from their dads.
“I have found that often other adults can help my teen in ways that I can’t” Placed into group settings, with responsible adult male leaders, these teen boys have much less difficulty transitioning into adulthood. It also

takes of a lot of the pressure off the often-overworked mothers. From my own experience, I have found that often other adults can help my teen in ways that I can’t, mostly due to big differences in our personalities. I am more of a quiet introspective thinker, and my daughter is very outgoing, and has a lot of potential leadership qualities that are hard for me to help her develop because I do not possess those qualities myself. Knowing how important it is to help her develop her natural abilities at this impressionable age, I make sure there are other adults in her life who can help influence her in ways I can’t. My daughter and I are very close, but there are just a lot of things that I can’t help her with, so I encourage her in developing relationships with adults who do have those abilities.
My daughter and I both respect our different abilities. It is very easy to be critical of people who are not like us, and parents and teens very easily fall into this trap. The best thing to do is be honest about your own abilities, and of the abilities of your teen, and do whatever is necessary to find outside influences for your teen. The more you can help your teen develop their abilities now, the less they will have to do on their own later (often, the hard way). And don’t forget, you are a role model too. Get involved in the lives of your teen’s friends, or volunteer to help in a group activity in some way, even if only occasionally. There are teens out there who really need to hear what you have to say.

Choosing The Best Divorce Lawyer Can Help You Deal With A Painful Situation by: Damyel Flower
M
arriage is not just a bond between two individuals, but also between their families. Hence when a marriage fails, it can be a devastating experience for all involved, especially if there are children to be considered. A divorce can be either by mutual consent or else it could be that one partner has decided to sever the bonds of marriage while the other partner still hopes to carry on or give the relationship another try. It is always advisable to hire the best divorce lawyer to sort out all divorce proceedings, in case, you and your spouse have decided to go on your separate ways. The 34
Gwinnett Parents
www.gwinnettparents.com
emotional setback of undergoing a divorce can already be shattering; hence it is best to leave the legal aspects to a qualified and experienced lawyer. The legal nitty gritties and issues can be best handled by a competent lawyer who is used to dealing with the unpleasant aspects of a divorce. When love goes out of a relationship, matters can turn quite ugly, with the spouses blaming each other for all their miseries. In such circumstance, it would not be possible for any partner to make rational decisions for the divorce. The best divorce lawyer is used to such aspects of a divorce and can act as the rational advisor for the individual, guiding the person through all legal loopholes that may weaken the case for his client. If the custody of a child is involved, it can be a delicate and sensitive issue that needs to be handled with extreme care and caution. The best divorce lawyer will be well prepared to deal with such a situation and convince the judge to take a decision in favor of his client. Another important reason for hiring the best divorce lawyer to represent you in a divorce case is dealing effectively with financial settlement between the spouses. Major issues regarding the financial settlement can arise if the couple had not gone in for a pre-nuptial agreement. Deciding which assets belong to which spouse can turn quite nasty if much amount is involved in association with the private property and assets which may be jointly or individually owned by the couple. The best divorce lawyer would be well trained in settling the financial terms and conditions to suit his client. This is an important aspect as once the divorce proceedings are through, a spouse may find himself or herself left out in the cold, with no finances to fall back on. A good divorce lawyer could also act as the much needed moral and emotional support that a person undergoing a divorce might require in times of need. It is therefore advisable to select a lawyer after considering every aspect. A past record of the lawyer with successful divorce settlements should be looked into before you consider hiring him to represent you in your divorce case. Also, a reference from a known person could further add to your confidence in your divorce lawyer. A lawyer and client relationship is based on trust, so be selective while choosing the best divorce lawyer to represent you and successfully handle your divorce case. rginally from Salisbury, NC, Margaret Gettle Washburn attended Oglethorpe University and graduated from Emory University School of Law in June, 1979. As a law clerk to Chief Judge Thomas Camp in the Fulton County State Court, Mrs. Washburn gained a wealth of experience in different aspects of the law. After clerking for two years, she became the first female prosecutor for the Office of the Solicitor General in the DeKalb County State Court. Mrs. Washburn went into private practice in Lawrenceville, Ga. in 1983 and has practiced in the Lawrenceville area since that time. She has wo wonderful sons, one is a sophomore at Gainesville State in Athens and one is a junior at Vanderbilt University. Margaret Gettle Washburn, PC practices general law, including family law, juvenile law, traffic law, personal injury, workers compensation, small corporate and business law, wills, trusts and estates. “In our office, the attorneys and paralegals always put the client and his or her goals first, but we ask that the client put his or her children’s best interests first. I remind all of my clients that their children’s interests have to be their first priority, and then everything else will fall into place. “ says Margaret. “Gwinnett County has changed so much in the past five years. Our population is approximately 800,000. Our school system is the largest in the State, including Fulton and Atlanta. Civil filings in our State and Superior Courts have outnumbered that of any court in the State. Of course, this growth has impacted on our families and on our children. Our courts are very busy and it is important for the lawyer to help the client navigate these difficult, expensive and emotional waters.” says Margaret. Divorce cases, especially those involving contested custody, have become adversarial, and are financially and emotionally draining. “I have seen our Courts grow in numbers of judges and courtrooms, but this has been a good thing, as it helps families reach finality in their cases, so that the parties can move on with their lives.” “My advice to parents going through a divorce with young children is to be patient and kind with one another. Although this sounds imwww.gwinnettparents.com
possible, it is not. If both parties are responsible and loving parents, then they should each understand that both parents need to have time with their children. If you liked one another enough to be married and have children, then it is still possible to get along with one another to get those same children through school. I always try to remind parents that children see and hear everything. They tend to resent a parent that is overly critical of the other parent.” Parents should not “try” their case to the children. The kids are not getting a divorce and do not want to be judge, jury and caretaker of the parent. They want to be kids. Let them be the children and let the parents be the adults. When those kids are teenagers, you will be thankful if you took the time to repair your relationship enough to co-parent those “adorable” teenage children! “Also, my advice is to be mindful that you may lose the other parent to an untimely death. When this happens, the children need to know that you respected the deceased parent. At that point, you have, again, become a single parent, not only through a divorce but through the death of the other parent.” Mrs. Washburn’s office has handled several of these cases, whereby the surviving parent has not only the funeral to deal with but the guilt associated with any death and the bereavement of the children. Always allow your lawyer to guide you through that emotional situation. “The best thing about becoming a lawyer is that it has given me the opportunity to meet so many neat people, travel the State while trying cases in other counties, and gain perspective on our corner of the world and how it affects our children.” “My advice to my fellow Gwinnett parents is to join a civic club, such as Kiwanis or Rotary, March of Dimes, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or other organization that helps kids. We have so many great children in this County, but some are living below the poverty level, some are in Church co-ops, some children are in foster care, and some children live in apartments with no utilities and some we have found living in cars. Put your children and all children first in your priorities, and watch how you will prosper this year.” says Margaret Gwinnett Parents

[ FITNESS LIFE ]
Interval Cardio and why it’s so effective for WEIGHT loss
We call this ‘steady-state’ cardio – one speed, one level of effort, total boredom… If you really want to see a change in your body, you need to start upping the pace. What YOU need is ‘interval’ cardio. By ‘interval’ I mean a variety of speeds. By upping the speed or the effort in short bursts throughout your workout, your body will find it hard to adapt. Here’s a little known fact for you; performing cardio at one continual speed will only burn calories while you are exercising. With intervals you keep your body guessing. It never gets bored, you constantly adjust the pace throughout your workout and you chew through a whole ton of calories, both during and after your workout!
Most people trying to lose fat believe that cardio is the answer. Most believe that more is better, and proceed to spend up to 60 minutes sweating away on the treadmill, xtrainer or bike, keeping their fingers crossed that maybe this week they’ll lose another pound… The truth is, most of this hard work is a waste of time. Plodding along at one set pace for a prolonged period of time will only help you burn a few hundred calories. 38
Gwinnett Parents
Interval work will send your calorie burning into orbit, as your body has to work so much harder, and, like resistance work, will keep your calorie burning efforts sky high for up to 48 hours afterwards! The results have to be seen to be believed… This torching of calories is what is known as EPOC - Excess PostExercise Oxygen Consumption, if you want its full title. Without getting too technical, EPOC is important for fat loss and increased fitness. It basically indicates the amount of extra oxygen your body will need to recover from exercise.
www.gwinnettparents.com
The more oxygen you consume, the higher your metabolic rate will be. Regular intense exercise will persistently raise your metabolism, and keep it raised between sessions. The higher your metabolism, even if only temporarily, the more calories you will burn! Interval training involves using cardio equipment, such as the rowing machine, the bike or the treadmill, for short bursts of high energy exercise, interspersed with active recovery. Doing intervals effectively 2-3 times a week will see you frying body fat in less than 20 minutes at a time – guaranteed. First of all, understand that you will be working to different levels of intensity within this workout. 3 out of 10 = easy level of work, able to keep up a conversation, and feel like you are warming up 4 out of 10 = slightly higher pace, where you are starting to work harder but still not out of breath 8 out of 10 = working hard, having to concentrate and starting to feel breathless and tired Try this workout for size and tell me that it doesn’t work… Warm Up: 5 minutes 3/10 level of intensity.

Slow
Start with 3 intervals in the above fashion. As you feel fitter, start to increase the number of intervals up to 6. This is just one of many highly effective cardio workouts that you can do to shift body fat fast. For 3 intervals you are looking at 17½ minutes, including warm up and cool down! Even for 6 intervals you are looking at no more than 25 minutes in total! Stick to this type of cardio training and you WILL see results, SO LONG AS you recover between sessions with healthy, regular eating that fuels rather than fools your body’s fat loss efforts... Remember: cardio intervals will give you a metabolic boost for up to 72 HOURS after you’ve finished, whereas steady state cardio will only give you this effect for about 30 MINUTES!! How many of you have been guilty of 40 – 60 minutes laboring away with cardio in the past? No more! To get the results that you want, you must strive to work hard and be consistent! Gwinnett Parents

Fighting Pregnancy Insomnia nancy insomnia because of pregnancy induced pains and discomforts. A woman may have trouble sleeping simply because a big tummy makes nearly all sleeping positions uncomfortable. Pregnancy insomnia is more commonly experienced during the last trimester because the swollen uterus presses against body parts and organs and creates pressure in some parts. This results in common pregnancy complaints like nausea, cramps, heartburn, body aches and the need to frequently urinate. Fetal movement and psychological anxieties may also contribute to the incidence of pregnancy insomnia. Other Sleep Problems
Pregnancy may be one of the happiest moments in a woman’s life. Some pregnant women however may also come to experience physical pains and discomforts as their tummies expand. One such common complaint is pregnancy insomnia. The Figures 78% of pregnant women experience insomnia during pregnancy. Although some may not experience this sleeping problem throughout pregnancy, at least 97% of pregnant women experience temporary pregnancy insomnia near the end of pregnancy or at the last trimester. Aside from common pregnancy insomnia, 30% of pregnant women also develop snoring habits that could be a sign of sleep apnea. Pregnancy Insomnia Pregnant women may experience preg40

[ FATHERHOOD ]
The Importance of a Father Figure
A
father plays an important role in the life of children. The lessons they learn from their father are carried through adolescence and even into adulthood. Children who grow up without a father figure often have trouble in life including problems with relationships. Children look up to their father and admire him. They strive to get acceptance from him as children and even as adults. A father or father figure is important to children even as young as infants. They learn that they get unconditional love from both parents and take that lesson throughout their lives. Children like to know that they have two parents who
42

love them and will care for them no matter what. The father figure helps to keep children feeling positive. He provides them with the confidence to grow up and face the world as adults. While the mother usually demonstrates a softer side of love to the children the father demonstrates a more masculine love. He shows his love in other ways that help children to better understand people throughout life. The relationship with the father figure gives children the opportunity to gain self-esteem. Studies have shown that children who grow up without a father figure end up
www.gwinnettparents.com
in trouble more often than those whose father was there. Not only do they commit more crimes but they also have lower test scores in school. This may be due to the fact that these children were lacking the discipline and role model of their father to learn to distinguish right from wrong. The father is a role model for hard work. Since he is most often the main breadwinner of the family the children see that he puts in long hours to pay for the things they have. Younger children look up to their father as almost a hero. They put their dad on a pedestal and feel as though he can do no wrong. As children reach adolescence they test their relationship with their parents. The father is looked to for advice and they trust his judgment and decisions. Children look to the father and mother as a model for future relationships. Although they don’t realize it, children are taking
in all the relationship dynamics that they see everyday and processing that. As they become older and start to have their own relationships they use that bank of knowledge as a pattern for how a male/ female relationship should be. If they saw a loving partnership between the parents they are likely to be able to form good relationships with people of the opposite sex. Conversely, if they witnessed a dysfunctional relationship they will need to overcome those thoughts and rebuild their ideal of what a relationship should look like. Even fathers who are divorced play an important role in their children’s lives. The time spent with the children helps them to feel loved and wanted. Kids need to gain self-esteem by being built up by both parents throughout their childhood. Fathers who are not physically present should continue to take an active interest in their children’s lives.

hink potatoes are only America’s favorite vegetable? — Think again! — The potato is such an important food globally that the United Nations has declared 2008 the “International Year of the Potato”. Citing the potato’s strong nutrition profile, versatility, and ability to feed the masses, the year has noble goals. Jacques Diouf, the Director-General of the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), stated that the “potato is on the front line in the fight against world hunger and poverty.” According to the FAO, the world will need to increase food production by about 60 percent to meet the needs of its rapidly growing population. The potato is crucial to meeting this challenge because it’s fast-growing and nutritious. One medium (5.3 ounces) potato contains 110 calories, 45 percent of the daily value of vitamin C, essential B vitamins, and 2 grams of fiber. Potatoes contain no fat, cholesterol or sodium, and skin-on potatoes are a good source of potassium. Potatoes are grown in all 50

Red Cooking Pork and Potatoes “Red cooking is a traditional Chinese braise, a stew that used to be made with unfiltered soy sauce, which can take on a reddish cast when long-stewed. 2 cups chicken broth 6 tablespoons dry sherry 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1/4 cup minced, peeled fresh ginger 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest 1 tablespoon honey 2 1/4 pounds boneless pork loin, trimmed and cut into 1-inch cubes 2 pounds very small yellow-fleshed potatoes, halved 9 medium scallions, cut into 2-inch strips 2 serrano chiles, seeded and minced 3 garlic cloves, slivered 3 star anise pods 3 4-inch cinnamon sticks 1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 1/2 pounds Swiss chard, mustard greens or turnip greens, rinsed (but not dried) and chopped 2 tablespoons rice vinegar Stir broth, soy sauce, ginger, sherry, orange zest and honey in large pot until honey dissolves. Add pork, potatoes, scallions, chiles, garlic, star anise and cinnamon sticks. Stir well and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer slowly until pork is meltingly tender, stirring occasionally, about 2 hours. (Alternatively, stir all these ingredients in slow cooker, cover and cook on low about 8 to 9 hours.) Meanwhile, heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add greens and vinegar. Cover, reduce heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until wilted and tender, about 12 to 15 minutes. Cover and keep warm on stove. To serve, first discard star anise pods and cinnamon sticks. Divide greens among serving bowls, then ladle stew

Boxty is practically a national dish in Ireland. It can be served as a potato pancake, a dumpling or, as here, in a crunchy soda bread. 2 3/4-pound russet potatoes 1 large egg plus 1 large egg white 1/3 cup canola oil, plus additional for greasing the baking sheet 3/4 cup fat-free milk 2 tablespoons minced chives (or the green part of a scallion) 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus additional for dusting and kneading 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Bring 1-inch water to a boil over high heat in vegetable steamer or large saucepan fitted with portable vegetable steamer. Peel 1 potato and cut into eighths; steam pieces until tender when pierced with fork, about 15 minutes. Rice or mash pieces in large bowl; set aside to cool 15 minutes. Position rack in center of oven; preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly oil large bakwww.gwinnettparents.com
ing sheet with canola oil dabbed on paper towel. Peel other potato and grate it through large holes of box grater. Squeeze out any excess moisture; add to riced or mashed potatoes. Stir in egg, egg white, oil, milk, chives and caraway seeds until fairly smooth. Add 3 1/4 cups flour, baking powder, and salt; stir with wooden spoon until mixture forms soft but sticky dough. Lightly flour clean work surface as well as your cleaned and dried hands. Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead 1 minute, adding flour in 1-tablespoon increments to keep dough from turning too sticky. Too much flour and dough turns tough; it should remain a little tacky but workable. Shape into 8-inch circle, flatten slightly keeping loaf mounded at its center and place on prepared baking sheet. Use sharp knife to slash X in top of dough, cutting into dough about 1/2 inch. Bake until golden brown and firm to the touch, about 55 minutes. Cool 1 hour on a wire rack before slicing and serving. Makes 1 large loaf (16 slices). n honor of Glaucoma Awareness Month, we are urging people who might be at risk to be tested for a Glaucoma Screening this monh. It is estimated that over 3 million Americans have glaucoma and half are at risk for going blind because they remain undiagnosed. Glaucoma is a complex disease, because there are no symptoms in the early stages. By the time vision loss is noted by the patient, the disease process is quite advanced. If detected early enough, vision loss from glaucoma can be treated and prevented.

Who is at risk? AfricanAmericans have a higher

incidence of glaucoma, and it often appears at a younger age than in other racial groups. Anyone with a close relative - father, mother or sibling - with glaucoma is also at risk. Older people, those with diabetes and people who have had a serious eye injury are considered at risk as well anyone who falls into these groups should go to your eye doctor to have their eyes examined. Although glaucoma cannot be cured, early detection and treatment can usually preserve vision. Glaucoma is a condition in which the optic nerve, responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain, is damaged. It can be associated with elevated pressure within the eye and often leads to vision loss. It begins with the loss of peripheral vision and then advances to a reduction in central vision. Glaucoma can potentially lead to blindness.
Facts about Glaucoma * It is estimated that over 3 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it. * Approximately 120,000 are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness in the U.S. * Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African-Americans. * The most common form, Open Angle Glaucoma, accounts for 19% of all blindness among African-Americans compared to 6% in Caucasians. * African-Americans ages 45-65 are 14 to 17 times more likely to go blind from glaucoma than Caucasians with glaucoma in the same age group. * Other high-risk groups include: people over 60, family members of those already diagnosed, diabetics, and people who are severely nearsighted.

Top 10 Ways to Cut Spending
“Raise the deductible on your homeowners and auto insurance policies. It’s not wise Do you run to file claims for out of money before you run small losses out of month? anyway.” Do you wonder where your money goes each month? Do you struggle to find money to invest for retirement, emergencies and other financial goals? Here are 10 tips to cut your spending and stretch your dollar to the max:
1. Consider dropping your home telephone line. Your cell phone is probably all you really need, and most likely it has free long distance. You could save $30 or more per month by dropping your “land line”. 2. Cut back on trips to Starbucks or other premium coffee shops. Often called the “latte factor”, spending several dollars per day on luxuries like premium coffee can really add up. For example, if you spend $4 50
Gwinnett Parents
for a cappuccino five times a week for 50 weeks out of the year (you’re on vacation the other two weeks), you would spend $1,000 in a year. Try treating your trip to Starbucks as a treat instead of a habit. You’ll save money and probably lose weight too! 3. Pay your mortgage payment bi-weekly instead of monthly. You’ll pay less interest and pay off your mortgage faster. 4. Carry cash instead of credit cards. Psychologically it’s harder to spend cash than it is to use the credit card. You’ll spend less and save on interest charges. 5. Use the “envelope system” for groceries, dining out, entertainment, and other discretionary spending categories. This will help you track how much you spend in these categories as well as prioritizing your spending.
www.gwinnettparents.com
6. Raise the deductible on your homeowners and auto insurance policies. It’s not wise to file claims for small losses anyway (insurance companies love to raise rates after you file a claim), so a higher deductible will save you money now and in the future.

7. Buy regular gas instead of premium. Most cars don’t need premium gasoline. Also, take public transportation if it’s available in your area. Take advantage of “park and ride” and carpooling options. 8. Plan your purchases to avoid impulse buying. Take a list with you to the grocery store and stick with it. Studies show that impulse buying can add $10-50 to your grocery bill – ouch!

9. Go to the library instead of the bookstore. If you’re an avid reader, give yourself a book budget for books that you will want to keep, and go to the library for everything else. 10. Take a vacation at home. Check out all the local sites and happenings. You’ll rediscover your hometown and save on travel and hotel costs. These are just a handful of ways you can cut spending and stretch your dollars, but if you follow these tips you’ll discover you have more money at the end of each month to apply to other financial goals, such as saving for college, retirement or just for a rainy day. www.gwinnettparents.com

How to Organize Your Pet’s Toys, Food, and Treats still allow your pet to play with his/her favorite toy whenever the mood strikes. Have your pet help you decorate a basket or bin for its toys. Putting your pet’s own paw prints and furry drawings on a container can be a cute way to personalize the organizing container for your pet’s toys.
E
veryone loves his or her family pet. We love to buy them things almost as much as we like to buy them for ourselves. However, like all of the other ‘stuff’ in our homes, the things we buy for our pets need to have a place to live. Part of organizing your home is getting your pet’s toys in order. Ideas for Pet Toys Get a nice wicker basket with a lid where you can store all of your pet’s toys. An attractive basket that matches the decor of the room can help you completely hide your pet’s toys. I organized our dog’s toys in this way, and it made the room look much nicer and cleaner. If you want your pet to be able to get to the toys easily, a nice open round wicker basket can help the room look neat, but 52

Ideas for Pet Food and Treats Plastic containers work great for getting your pet’s food organized. Some specialty container stores even have containers made specifically to hold dog and cat food. The ones with wheels work great, because you can roll them anywhere. Any kind of clear plastic container works well for storing treats for your pet. Dedicated Cupboard/Cabinet Space If you have the space in your home, dedicate a cabinet, cupboard, or shelf in a cabinet or cupboard for your pet’s things. Putting all food and treats in the same place can help you easily find your pet’s favorite treat. Your pet’s toys, food, and treats are part of your home too, so do not forget them in your home organization plan.

The Best 2008 Model Family Cars! A Few Ideas and Suggestions for Families If you have a growing family, then you are probably constantly on the lookout for a brand new car. Specifically one that will accommodate your growing families needs. Well look no further, because there are some really great family cars for 2008. First up is the 2008 Buick Enclave, with a sticker price around $35,000. With this package you will get the basics such as six air bags, and lots of room and comfort for the whole family. This vehicle has a nice amount of space in it for the entire family and is sure to fit your shopping bags as well. The next 2008 model car is the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Two-Mode Hybrid. Even though this car is already being sold it is still considered to be a 2008 model and is great for families. It has 300hp, and has an eclectic motor generator, according to GM. This means that you have the option of using electric power by itself, or engine power by itself. The reason why this made out top family cars list is because it can fit a large family in addition, it is one of the most comfort54
Gwinnett Parents
able rides ever. In addition to the fact that since it is a hybrid you will definitely be saving money on gas. This truck has plenty of legroom for even the tallest member of the family, and plenty of storage space for those large shopping trips. Of course this truck may be a little more expensive than what most families may actually want to spend, but in the long run it would definitely be worth the money. Next to make the list is the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country. This happens to be a favorite among many families. The new model is both longer and wider than the older models. They also have added a third seating configuration to accommodate more people, and it can be easily folded down for more storage space. They have also made the second row chairs into swivel seats, which can face backwards so that you can chat it up with anyone sitting behind you. They also give you the option of having a table installed, which is a great option to have if you have children. One feature that many parents love is the rear view camera, which allows you to see behind you, and of course the entertainment system. To make this 2008 model even better for parents it has side window sunshades so you don’t have to worry about keeping the sun out of your babies face in this car. This minivan has even more features that you are sure to love so it is definitely worth it to check it out. The price is also very reasonable for the amount of options and features that you get. The only down side to the minivan is that when you turn the chairs around, and if you have the table installed, there is not that much
www.gwinnettparents.com
space to work with. Just some thing to think about when choosing options. The 2008 Dodge Caravan seems to be a twin of the town and country. They both have the same features, and offer very similar options. When choosing between these two, the only difference may be the price, and your personal preference. Another pick that is sure to be a favorite among moms is the 2008 Toyota Highlander. This happens to be one of the safest family vehicles on the market according to many magazine reviews. According to the manufacturer it comes with seven air bags, which is nicely spread out through out the vehicle, antilock brakes, trac-
tion control, an electronic brake force distribution, stability control, just to name a few. It has three rows of seating, which comes standard, and the best part is that the seats are leather, and every parent knows that leather seating definitely makes for an easier clean up. One feature I love is the fact that it has a sound system, which you can hook up your cell phone to. This way you don’t have to stop when you are in the middle of errands, to take a call. So if you are looking for a new family car try checking out some of the ones listed above. They definitely have a lot of the features that a growing family needs.
