Dear Potential New behalf of the more than 1,200 Member, On members who make up the GW

A LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF RECRUITMENT

4

Panhellenic Association, I want to welcome you to Recruitment 2018. My name is Elizabeth Jessup, and my job is to make Recruitment 2018 a success for everyone involved - that includes you, the potential new member. Consider me a guide, liason, and advocate for you throughout this process. The GW Panhellenic Association strives to be a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive place. Our organizations are filled with passionate individuals who come together to help each other become the best versions of themselves. Together, we positively impact each other, our communities, and the world. When I was a freshman, I had no idea what Greek Life would come to mean to me. I never would have expected to be here, just a couple of years later, writing this letter to you. Being a member of the Greek community has been an integral part of my personal, professional, and academic development throughout my time at GW. Through relationships I’ve formed within the Panhellenic Association, I’ve gotten jobs, internships, academic assistance, life advice, and some of the best friends I could have ever asked for. I’ve been challenged, inspired, supported, and cared for by members of this community, and they have truly changed my life for the better. In these pages, you will find information about the Panhellenic Association and each of our 11 chapters. I encourage you to read through it to get a sense of what our community is all about. When it comes to Recruitment, my best advice is this: keep an open mind and trust yourself. The people you meet during this process could become some of the most important people in your life.

Sincerely yours, Elizabeth Jessup VP of Recruitment

RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE OPEN HOUSE ROUND Friday, January 19th

On the first night of Recruitment, you will attend parties at all 11 chapters. You’ll get a brief introduction to each chapter and its values, and you’ll have the opportunity to share a little about you and your values with members of the chapter. You’ll be given a tshirt by the Panhellenic Association to wear on this night.

PHILANTHROPY ROUND Saturday, January 20th

During this round you will attend a maximum of 8 chapters. Chapters will tell you about their national and/or local philanthropies and they’ll describe the opportunities they have to get involved with philanthropy and service. This is a great time to talk about the service work you may have participated in before, and to think about the kind of service and philanthropy you would like to engage with at GW and in D.C. We recommend you dress casually again tonight, but slightly nicer than on the first night.

SISTERHOOD ROUND Sunday, January 21st

You will be invited back to a maximum of 5 parties on this night. You’ll get the chance to learn about what sisterhood means to each chapter. It may be helpful to think about the type of sisterhood community you want to be a part of, and to think about the things you value in your existing friendships. Attire is business casual.

PREFERENCE ROUND Monday, January 22nd

You will attend a maximum of 2 parties during Preference Round. Chapters will share with you their preference ritual. Really try to picture yourself in the each of the chapters you attend, and imagine what it would be like to join them. Semi-formal attire is recommended for tonight.

BID DAY

Tuesday, January 23rd After PNMs and chapters make a mutual selection following Preference Round, chapters will extend invitations of membership, also called bids. You will be able to pick up your bid from the Marvin Center during a designated window of time.

Pi Rho Chi Panhellenic Recruitment Counselor

Pi Rho Chis are active members who temporarily step away from their chapters prior to and throughout Recruitment to serve as guides for PNMS throughout the process. Pi Rho Chis answer questions and help PNMs make values-based decisions. After you register for Recruitment, you will be assigned to a Pi Rho Chi group shortly before the start of Recruitment.

7

VALUES-BASED RECRUITMENT Our organizations are values-based which means that they are each built upon a unique set of ideals and principles that help to guide the organization. Our Recruitment process aligns with this values-based foundation. Chapters don’t recruit new members based on surface-level characteristics, but rather based on a deeper understanding of the things that matter to the PNM and to the chapter. In the “Meet the Chapters” section of this book, you can read a little bit about each chapter’s unique values. Throughout Recruitment, you’ll have the chance to speak to a variety of chapter members to better understand their personal values and those of their chapter. In addition, GW Greek Life is collectively dedicated to our core values of active leadership, scholarship, community, service, and accountability

HAVING VALUES-BASED CONVERSATIONS It may seem odd to think about having a conversation with someone you just met about something as serious and personal as your values. However, to really make sure you’re getting the most out of Recruitment, it’s important to be able to have those kinds of deep conversations. Here are some ideas about how to have values-based conversations: • Focus on the bigger picture: instead of just talking about the activites you did in high school, talk about why those activities matter to who you are now. Did track teach you about hard work? Did mock trial help you to build confidence? • Ask sisters why they chose their chapter. They’ve definitely thought about it, and their answer will probably give you a pretty good insight into what their values are and how they align with their chapter’s. • Think seriously about your values ahead of time. What’s important to you? What do you hope to get out of joining a Greek chapter? Thinking about your values ahead of time will allow you to more readily focus the conversation on things that are important to you so that you can get the information you need to make an informed decision. It will also show the chapters that you’re serious about joining a chapter for the right reasons.

THE PANHELLENIC CREED We, as undergraduate members of women's fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving to the best of our ability our college community. Cooperation for futhering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as fraternity women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendships of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live. 8

ACTIVE LEADERSHIP We strive to build leaders who will go above and beyond to serve their organizations. To us, leadership is not inherent in a title, but rather something that individuals earn by seeking out opportunities to help others and their organizations reach their highest potential. Our members gain leadership experience in Greek Life that they take with them throughout the rest of their lives.

SCHOLARSHIP As GW students, our academics always come first. We are committed to attaining high levels of academic achievement, and we pride ourselves on consistently maintaining an all-Greek GPA that is higher than the GW average. Our organizations work to facillitate our members’ success through measures like study hours, class resources, and textbook libraries.

COMMUNITY Joining a Greek organization means becoming a part of something bigger than yourself. Our organizations foster bonds that last a lifetime, both within chapters and across chapters, and provide networks of support that lift our members up. Membership in a Greek chapter extends beyond your time at GW and will continue to provide you with a community even after you leave college.

SERVICE Service is an integral part of the Greek experience at GW. Our members give thousands of hours each year in service around the D.C. Metro area. Each chapter supports their national philanthropy through fundraising events that regularly generate thousands of dollars annually. Additionally, Greek members often participate in other service activities and organizations at GW and beyond.

ACCOUNTABILITY As a Greek community, we are committed to taking responsibility for the culture we create. We have accountability measures in place to ensure that we are holding our organizations and our members to the highest standards. Additionally, we work to constantly improve our community through intiatives like the Panhellenic Sexual Assault Task Force which was created in April 2017. 9

Since 1979, Alpha Delta Pi has been committed to raising money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. This organization helps provide comfort, care and “a home-away-from-home” for the families of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. We sponsor a room in Children’s National Hospital right here in DC. Twice a month, we visit local RMHC houses, where sisters take time out of their busy schedules to make home-cooked meals for families, interact with children, decorate for holidays, and many more interactive volunteer projects that help us make the house feel like a home to the families staying there. Additionally, we hold two philanthropy events a year to raise money for RMHC. Diamond Heist, held in the Fall, is our annual volleyball tournament on the National Mall, and Lion’s Share, held in the Spring, is our campus-wide field day where we have a dunk tank, kickball tournaments, “Pi an ADPi”, and more!

One of our core values is philanthropic service to others. Our philanthropic service focuses on our international organization’s cause: literacy. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and currently has no working treatment or cure. Our sisterhood is dedicated to help change that. We support our philanthropy by hosting Ultra Violet Days in the fall and Sigmalympics in the spring to raise money for our cause. As a chapter, we also take part in the DC Walk to End Alzheimer’s and volunteer at a local nursing home right near GW’s campus. Hands-on service in our community is so special to our chapter because it allows us to see exactly who our philanthropy is impacting and brings us together as a sisterhood.

Service is the way that we are able to give back to our community, while also encouraging and spending time with sisters.

Why is Recruitment in the Spring? In 2015 the GW Greek Life office launched a Greek Life Task Force. One of the recommendations of the task force was to move primary recruitment to the Spring so as to allow freshman more of an opportunity to get settled at college before joining a Greek organization. The change will also allow freshman to better understand the expectations and requirements of membership before joining.

Can I be in a sorority and be involved in other In fact, our organizations recommend it, and some even organizations? Absolutely! require it. We pride ourselve on the variety of organizations in which our members participate and lead. Our chapters are strong because our members are passionate and involved leaders across the hundreds of student orgs at GW.

Can I join more than one Greek organization? You can only join one Panhellenic or MGC (Mulicultural Greek Council) chapter. However, you can join an “alternative Greek” organization like a professional or community service sorority or fraternity in addition to a Panhellenic or MGC chapter! A lot of our members choose to participate in both types of Greek Life, and you’ll probably find Panhellenic members in most alternative Greek organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions Do I need letters of recommendation?

Nope! We want you to go through recruitment with an open mind, and none of our organizations require letters of recommendation. However, if you have a letter of recommendation you would like to submit, please email it to Kim Shirrell at gwupnmcomm@gmail.com.

Will I have to live in Greek Housing?

9 of our 11 Panhellenic chapters currently have chapter housing. The policies regarding whether or not members have to live in the house differ depending on the chapter, so this is a great questions to ask during Recruitment!

Are there scholarships available for dues?

Yes, both the National Panhellenic Conference and individual chapters offer some financial assistance based on need and/or merit. Information regarding these scholarships can be found at tinyurl.com/NPC-Scholarships and tinyurl.com/Chapter-Scholarship. However, most chapter scholarships are only available for initiated members, so you may not be able to get one for your first semester dues. This is another great question to ask during Recruitment! 25
