Welcome to the supporters of Runwell Sports FC, we hope you have an enjoyable, and warm, afternoon.
At the time of writing this, I am somewhat happy after securing the Media Manager of the Month award for January by the Essex FA. I was nominated by a number of people from the club and won the public vote with 34.7% of the votes.
I do everything for the club voluntarily, with no budget and using my own knowledge and experience with some Adobe software. I do not have any media background nor do I work for a media company so the award is personally, lovely recognition at long last that I am doing something right!
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took time to vote for me. You have no idea just how much a simple little thing like this means after 15 years of being a football volunteer.
Last weekend we faced a tricky away trip to Canning Town, where we hadn’t won a match since 16th December 2017. A first half goal by Joe O’Kane and a somewhat lucky goal by Louie Hay with a deep cross that went in off the far post, secured the points.
Looking back at appearances, the Canning Town match marked Aaron Baldwin’s 99th appearance for the club. During that time, he’s managed to chalk up 65 goals (4 of which are pens), giving him an average of 1.5 goals per game, a superb return, for him and the club. This season alone has seen him score 16 goals in 17 appearances and he is only one goal away from equalling his best season total of 17 in the 2018-19 season.
Today we face Runwell Sports and suprisingly we have only played Runwell on four occasions since the 1st October 2011.
Of the four matches, we exited the Essex Premier Cup in October 2011, losing 3-1 at home. In Feburary 2015, another home fixture, we took a form of revenge, in a 3-0 win in the 4th round in our second and last Essex Premier Cup matches against them.
The two remaining fixtures were played in the EOFL and both in 2017, and strangely, both in March in Division 1. We won both home and away fixtures 3-1(a) and 2-1(h).
Runwell currently sit mid-table, three points behind Catholic having played three games more. Today’s game should be a close affair but hopefully we’re on the right side of a good result.
Enjoy the game and most importantly, have a safe journey home.

Hello and welcome to the management team and players from Runwell Sports football club.
The last couple of weeks have been mixed for us in the sense we lost in the quarter finals of the County Cup but then bounced back last week with a win in the league.
Losing to Rayleigh Town in the Premier Cup was a tough one for us all to take but fair play to Rayleigh, they came and got the job done. On the day they were physically stronger and did the dirty work better than. They scored 3 quick goals in the second half after we were a goal-up at half time, which sucked all momentum out of us. We managed to grab a goal late on and were very much on the front foot and as much as we pressed, we couldn’t find an equaliser before the end.
Last week we travelled to a hard working Canning Town side, a place where we have not had much joy over the years. There were no hangovers or feeling sorry for ourselves, it was back to business. We had to graft and dig-in deep to take home three points which was all that mattered on the day. I was delighted with the response in getting the job done and getting some more points on the board which was much needed.
I have expressed to the team that we have a relentless period of games now, which appears we’ll have 8 games in the next 32 days, certainly a lot for this level of football. I’ll be looking to rotate the team around for most games and share the minutes to keep everyone engaged and switched on to the task in hand.
Today we face a hard working Runwell team who had a fantastic result last week beating Sungate and have settled very quickly into the EOFL Premier Division after their promotion last season. I am sure this will be a great game of football today and I’m looking forward to the battle.
Enjoy the game today and have a safe journey home.
Taking the leap from a reserve to a first team at any level is always going to take some time to adjust. For Joe O’Kane, the phrase ‘duck to water’ is one that can quite easily be aimed at the young attacking midfielder.
Manager Simon Thomas promoted O’Kane to the first team after good performances and a glowing reference from reserve manager Eammon Kearney, it was only a matter of time before he earned his first appearance.
O’Kane commented “while it may of been challenging, Simon and Tom both showed patience with me, and allowed me to settle in with the squad last season. Since my first game back with the first team this season, my confidence has grown throughout each appearance, and hopefully, this has been reflected in my performances”
When asked about the reserve and first team changing rooms, Joe stated “both sets of teams have a strong management team and a great group of players, who all set high targets for both the club and themselves. In terms of changing room atmosphere, there isn’t much difference as everyone knows when to have a laugh and when to switch on for a game”.
“There is great quality and competition in this team, so it was always going to be tough to secure a place in the starting 11. However, all the boys showed faith in me, and helped me grow into a more established player in the squad. Whilst this is the case, it’s still important for me to fight to my place in training and games each week, to prove to Simon and Tom that I deserve a starting spot on game days.”
In repaying the faith shown in him, Joe went on “scoring my first goal since being back with the first team, was a great feeling, as I got to repay the faith that Simon and Tom showed me.
However, this is a team game, and securing 3 points each week or progressing through the cups feels amazing. Hopefully, we can get ourselves into a cup final which will repay all the time and effort for everyone involved in the club”
It was only right to ask if Joe had a close teamate such is grassroots football. Joe stated “I have a good relationship with all the boys in the team. However, my favourite team-mate who I’ve known for many years has to be Owen Wells. He is a a great lad and goalkeeper, who has ability to secure his position in the squad, and push on to have a good non-league footballing career”
“This is one of, if not the strongest squad I’ve been part of, where every single player has the ability to be part of the starting 11 each week. Whilst not all of our results have reflected this, we are still in the latter stages of two cup competitions, and have the chance of finishing high up in the table.”
To finish it was good to understand if anyone had a positive influence on his football. “Many people have had a positive impact on my recent footballing career which if it wasn’t for them, I probably wouldn’t be playing. These include Eamon Kearney, Tom Harding, and Simon Thomas, where they have continued to show faith in me, despite my lack of consistency.
“Another influential character who has been present in my footballing career since I can remember is my grandad Jim, who has always supported me, and shows up to my games, however far away they are”
We’re rightly pleased to have Joe with us at Catholic United and we hope we can do all we can to help continue his flourishing football career.

Sharing club values of being open and inclusive to all, to encompass and represent all members in the community and society in which we operate
As our ties with Celtic Football Club grow stronger following Calvin Carter-Vickers permanent transfer from Tottenham, we’ve created a tie with Lurgan Celtic, making them an official allegiance club. We share the same values of being open and inclusive to all, and do our utmost to represent all members in our community.
In this programme we hear about their start to 2023.
2023 kicked off for Lurgan Celtic with a return to league action away to Armagh Blues. Blues had only 1 league defeat in the lead up to the game so were not to be taken lightly, and so it proved as Armagh Blues struck first in the early minutes of the contest from a long ball forward that beat the offside trap and saw the Armagh striker hit the back of the net.
Celtic hit back shortly afterwards courtesy of Reynolds, and had the chance to take the lead when a goalbound effort was blocked on the line by the hand of a Blues defender, that saw the home side reduced to 10 men and a penalty awarded. Unfortunately, the Toman penalty was well saved by the Armagh keeper and halftime came with both sides locked at one apiece. The Hoops started the second half in menacing fashion and two early goals put the game to bed. The first came from the head of Gilmore from a teasing Crawford cross, whilst the second and Celtic’s third, came when a Crawford inswinging freekick was met by captain Lavery to slot home and secure the win and 3 points. The remainder of the game so no further scoring and the match ended with a 3-1 away victory for the Lurgan team
The second game of the month saw Celtic travel to Loughgall to face Division 1 outfit Sandy Hill in the quarter final of the Mid Ulster Shield.
In testing conditions against a well organised Sandy Hill side, Celtic were finding chances hard to come by, and their task was made all the more difficult when with the last kick of the first half they found themselves a goal down, when a Sandy Hill corner somehow ended up evading everyone and nestled in the back of the Celtic goal. Celtic were undone again early in the second half following a quick counter attack, and despite plenty of effort, the home side were able to repel the threat and the game became more stretched as Celtic pressed forward and Sandy Hill sought to counter. Celtic did eventually pull a goal back late on via a strike from the dynamic McConville, although there was not to be extra time as the game ended with Sandy Hill progressing to the semi finals of the competition.
The month of January ended with a return to league action against Glenavy Youth for the Hoops in Lurgan. Glenavy had put together a series of results to serve notice of their quality, however on the day whilst they contained Celtic initially, they fell behind and struggled to get back into the contest. Celtic struck through the potent Reynolds, who then proceeded to double the teams tally and his own personal feat in the first half to leave them 2-0 to the good at half time. Celtic were soon back on the goal trail in the second half and the impressive McAlinden and Judge both got goals deserving of their performances.
Glenavy did pull a goal back courtesy of a corner that was not cleared, but substitutes Douglas and Withers soon had Glenavy on the back foot again and the latter struck two sublime late goals to leave the final scoreline reading 6-1 to Lurgan Celtic and thus end the month on a high.
The Dubai Celtic Supports Club give us an introduction to their club.........
Founded in 2003 by a group of expats residing in Dubai and still lead by the club President Martin McGinty, the Dubai Hoops CSC has been an integral part of the Celtic Community in the Middle East. The go to place to watch the matches for resident members here in Dubai or welcoming Celtic fans visiting from all over the world either on holiday or in transit.
However, the choice of the Dubai Hoops as our name was not a given. The original Committee made up of the club President, Paul Scott, Franny McClure (RIP), Ivan White, Laurie Elder, Derek Keegan (RIP), Andy Karacinski and Pat Canning had to select from the following:
1. The Emerald Exiles
2. The Yasser Arafat No.1 and
3. The Dubai Hoops
Fortunately they chose wisely and with the Charlie the Camel logo, designed by Derek Keegan, the Dubai Hoops have gone from strength to strength over the last 20 years mirroring the success on and off the park which has been enjoyed by Celtic FC.
The Dubai Hoops CSC were inaugurated when Billy and Liz McNeill attended a gala dinner. With over 300 in attendance, Cesar took great pleasure in explaining to some followers of the forces of darkness what the European Cup looked like.
During the 2006/2007 season, the Dubai Hoops became the first CSC in the world to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of that famous win in Lisbon. We were very honoured to welcome Celtic Royalty to our Club. Our most famous son Billy McNeill along with the mercurial Bertie Auld, Tommy Gemmell, Jim Craig , Willie Wallace, John Yogi Hughes, Charlie Gallagher, Joe McBride , John Fallon and Willie O’Neill together with the widows of Jimmy Johnstone (Agnes), Bobby Murdoch (Kathleen) and Ronnie Simpson (Rosemary) spent a week in Dubai with the supporters.
The week culminated in a dinner dance in the Great Ballroom where Billy and Tommy paraded the European Cup, leaving not a dry eye in the 500+ attendees. The week was that much of a success that Billy McNeill left Dubai with a steak pie named after him…
We have welcomed so many stars past and present to our club and will continue to do so. This being our 20th Season together we will celebrate with another Gala dinner and be joined by Brian McClair , Peter Grant , Roy Aitken ,Derek Whyte and over 150 guests . This promises to be a great night and hopefully one of many celebrations this season.
Dubai, like many major cities in the world, has seen massive changes over the past 2 decades and the Dubai Hoops CSC has had to adapt to these changes. Many members have come and gone, economic progress may take a plunge, but the Dubai Hoops CSC is there and will always be there. We have approx. 160 members and welcome tourists from far and wide each week to watch the games. We are based in McGettigans Bar Dubai World trade centre and show every game no matter the day or time.
We would like to wish Catholic United all the very best for the season and hopefully we can welcome you to our club if any club member or fan visits Dubai in the future.

A new feature for our programme is ‘FantasticFives’, a 5-a-side dream team chosen by a player, committee member or a supporter. The only rule is that ONE player must be a player from any of our teams.
This week we’ve asked first team player, Aaron Clark, for his FantasticFive and his reasons why they’ve made his side.
Easily the greatest player to watch play the game, would tie people up in knots, absolutely unplayable.
