Let’s s

From The Editor - Rob Lilley So we’re back here again to face Sporting Bengal for the second time in the space of 5 days. Last Saturday we saw a cracking game of football which Rovers narrowly edged it 3-2 to maintain our position at the top of the Essex Senior League. We also found out that Hullbridge defeated Enfield 1893 to inflict their first league defeat of this campaign, They’ve still got a game in hand but it gives us a slight upper hand at this early stage. I think those of you who attended the game would have seen a goal which will go into the hat for a goal of the season contender. Stand up a certain Mr Dave Collins, who’s left footed scorcher was good enough to win any match, let alone a Step 5 game. As good as Billy Johnson’s overhead kick against Bowers, or Billy’s run and shot against Halstead? I’ll leave it up to you to discuss and come up with your own answers. It was also another match where Ashley Hawkins and Billy Radley put in a good stint, two of Rovers best players this season. But I won’t harp on about individuals. Results speak for themselves and we’re at the top of the league in a team sport so it’s a case of the team pulling together for everyone.

Trenks stated in a recent interview that the league will start to take shape in the next 2-3 games and now that Enfield 1893 have tasted defeat, it will be interesting to see how quickly they get over that defeat. I, for one, shall be keeping an eye on their next match to see if they bounce back. More club news now and our injury list continues to grow, with Nick Skelton and Gary Paterson picking up slight knocks. They join, Billy Johnson, Ty Benjamin, Adam Holmes & Carl Read. Last Friday we heard live on BBC Radio Essex that we were going to face Colchester United at home in the 3rd round of the Essex Senior Cup. It’s a game that will probably see a more ‘youthful’ side being fielded by Colchester but they’re a League One side nonetheless and having spoken to Enrico after last Saturday’s game he remarked “we want to win every game. We’ll go into the game just like any other and give it 100%. That all we can ask every player”. Back to Sporting Bengal and everyone I spoke to last Saturday stated just how impressed they thought The Tigers were. Just like last season, I think they’ll remain one of the best passing sides we’ll see at Burroughs Park this season.

This coming Saturday, we face a tough game at Stansted. After last season’s ‘interesting’ match, in which Spazza decided to take a bite out of a Stansted player and then get sent off in the second half. That match ended 2-2 and was a game we needed to win in order to maintain our push for automatic promotion. It’s also another nice ground to attend within the ESL of course. So if you’re not attending, we’ll be posting match updates on Twitter from 2:45pm onwards, inclusive of a team sheet if one is made available.

From The Dugout - Dan Trenkel

Well my predictions of a difficult game on Saturday were true and once again we’ve seen Sporting Bengal to be a very very good footballing side. They’re unorthodox, to which I mean I don’t think they have a set formation, but it works for them. I actually spoke to their captain at half time and he said that when they play a grounds with good pitches, their intention is to have a go and pass the ball. Full credit to them because that’s what they did. The first half was a bit of bitty game and if I’m honest, they shaded that half. But we came out in the second half more determined and Dave’s goal was enough to win any game. We could see that he was lining up the shot but to target it precisely was superb. Dave is easily capable of that sort of finish and he’s done it so many times. This season he hasn’t got the goal return, as yet, but after the penalty he was full of confidence and that was required to finish a shot like that.

I was asked by Graham about Ashley’s contribution this season and I’m more than happy to agree that he’s having a great season so far. We’re playing Ash in a new position and we can’t forget that. He’s a striker and has played as a striker for most of his career, as well as a winger perhaps, and we’re utilising him to his strengths in a position he’s still getting used to and he is getting better and better at it. What he’s got to learn from it is that sometimes team will look at him and think right, we’re going to put a man on you, or even two men really tight on you. And we always say to him it is about working out how best to get the better of your direct opponent. First half I think their number 8 did a good job on him and because of our play, we were quite slow and methodical and it didn’t give Ash a lot of space. But second half I think he was our most outstanding player. We started the game with just 15 fit first teamers and unfortunately Nick Skelton pulled up with a small twinge in his groin so we caught him quickly and replaced him with Spazza. But with Pato still out, again with a groin problem, it means we’re close to bare bones with 13 players who are fully fit. Don’t get me wrong, Gary Ansell could probably come on for 10-15 minutes and do a job for us, but the fact he would never let us forget it, is the reason why he’ll never step foot on that pitch!!

Gary is a real asset to have in the dugout and we really missed the information coming from him at the Enfield game. He’s played at a professional level and see’s things which a lot of people miss and has the ability to adapt things accordingly. We’ve got some good lads on the bench and we’ll take a look at the likes of Pato and Skelt’s injuries and Ty get’s the results back of his MRI scan this week, so we’ll take a look to see if any of these guys will be back soon, but Adam Holmes and Billy look to be on the sidelines a little longer. We’ll take stock and if we have to we’ll look to bring in some new faces. As you’ll already know we’ve been drawn against Colchester United in the Essex Senior Cup. The selfish part of me as a player you always want play at big grounds, but from the club’s point of view, we’re at home and hopefully we can get a few fans through the gate for a welcome bit of finance. It will also be nice to show of Colchester United to see our pitch, to showcase it to them in the hope that they might look at it and say, yeah, we’ll come back here. We’ll give it a good go in the game and they’ll probably bring a youthful side but that will even things up I’m sure, so there’s no reason why we can’t go for it. On the night, who knows what will happen! Trenks

Sporting Bengal Utd The Bangladeshi community started to arrive in the UK during the 1960’s. Initially the community consisted of single men. •The 70’s saw the formation of small Bangladeshi communities throughout the UK. In London, like many other immigrant communities the East End became their home. However, there were very few sporting opportunities for them •The 80’s saw the influx of Bangladeshi families. This resulted in a large Bangladeshi youth population and organisations were formed to cater for the needs of those young people. Gradually young people started to organise themselves into local football teams. •The 90’s saw the development of these teams as they ventured into Sunday League football •The Asian League offered an opportunity for these teams to compete against each other •The Summer League offered less established teams to play football which helped the rapid expansion of new teams to the current level we have now

History of Sporting Bengal United FC It all began with a football tour to Bangladesh in 1996 by a group of the best Bangladeshi players in London. There was a realisation that talent was being wasted with the divisions that existed and that nothing had been achieved by individual teams. It was agreed that a selective team, consisting of all the best players in the community would form Sporting Bengal United FC Over the Years Sporting Bengal played in the Asian League for 3 years between 19961998. After winning the league for 3 years in succession and cup for 2 years they moved to the London Intermediate League. They entered the Kent Senior Football League in 2003 despite opposition from the FA and other football bodies. The Kent Leageu was very helpful and supportive in the early years. In 2011, Sporting moved to the Essex Senior Football League as it was difficult to travel to away games in the Kent League. Sporting has also been competing in the UK Asian Championship in Glasgow since its inception in 1998. Sporting has won the tournament 3 times and been runners up 4 times.

Rovers v Sporting Bengal The competitive history

There’s not been much competition between the sides, just three games. However, those games have seen an average of 8 goals in each match. The clubs first faced each other on the 1st September 2012 in the ESL, a match which Rovers won 5-2 at home. In the return on the 11th March 2013, a Danny Heale goal secured a point for Rovers in a cracking 4-4 draw. Of course we can also include last Saturday’s 3-2 win for Rovers in the ESL.

Match Report Enfield 1893 2 - 1 Rovers Essex Senior League Premier Division - Saturday 5th October By Dave Sexton Rovers kicked off proceedings on a perfect day for football in mild calm conditions and the pitch looking superb for this ESL match vs Sporting Bengal. Just down the road we were also hoping that neighbours Hullbridge could do us a favour and put one over on fellow pacesetters Enfield 1893. Rovers changed things slighty from our midweek derby at Southend Manor with Billy Radley replacing James Pugsley at right back, Joe Skeels given a start as was Player Manager Dan Trenkel. On 25 minutes Bengal won a free kick out wide which was played short to Shahed Ahmed who struck it perfectly with his right foot wide of Dale Brightly into the right hand top corner to give the visitors the lead. It was a great strike and the visitors were well worth their lead. On 39 minutes Rovers struck back after some great work down the right from the ever energetic Billy Radley who then delivered an inch perfect cross onto the head of Dan Trenkel who couldnt miss and headed past Jason Hartles in the Bengal goal. Scores were level and thats how it remained at half time and if im honest we were lucky to go in even. Rovers came out more positive however Hartless in the Bengal goal was in inspired form and his antics also helped build a rapport with us fans behind the goal so much so we were on first name terms with 'Jason'. He produced a fine save from a goal bound Hepburn header on 55 minutes earning applause from all behind the goal. Both he and his defenders were standing firm as Rovers continued to dominate. Bengals resilience was soon to run out when 'Jason' came rushing out of his goal bringing down Jay Smith giving referee Edward Smith no option but to award the spot kick and issue 'Jason' with a yellow card. Dave Collins took the spot kick and placed it to 'Jasons' left into the corner for a 2-1 lead to Rovers. To be fair it was coming. On 77 minutes the moment everyone was talking about occurred. Dave Collins picked the ball up some thirty yards out on the right and moved to a more central position and you could see by his eyes he knew exactly where he was going to put the ball and boy did he? His left foot shot was millimetre perfect into the top right hand corner of the net. As Andy Gray would have said 'what a hit son' and 'you dont save them'. That goal will be talked about for sometime. Well done Dave. To be fair 'Jason' took it all in his stride especially when he was asked 'did you have that covered Jason?' he replied 'did I f***?' Fair play to the guy. Bengal weren't out of this and came out a little more after that and on 80 minutes Abdul Bari pulled one back after Hepburn had cleared of the line to make it a twitchy last ten minutes for Rovers.

Sunday 22nd Sept 2013 saw the U16’s travel to Enfield for the 1st round of the U16’sChallenge Cup, with two league defeats behind them the boys were determined to put t heir bad form behind them. With a different starting 11, straight from the kick off the difference from the previous 2 games was obvious; the boys were first to the ball and fought to win every tackle. After going 1 – 0 down Enfield came back fighting and scored the equaliser with a very good shot that the Wakering keeper could do nothing about, but instead of sitting back the boys again attacked from kick off and within seconds scored again 1 – 2 Wakering. At the end of the first half the score is 1 – 3 to Wakering. Again from kick off the boys were determined not to give Enfield any chances but despite their best efforts conceded a second goal, with substitutions made mid field lost a bit of their shape and Wakering were lucky not to concede again when Enfield fought back. Final score 2 – 5 Wakering. The game was well fought and Enfield a very good team. Well done to all the team and congratulations on getting through to next round.

Arsenal staged a remarkable comeback in a League Cup tie against Reading at the Madejski Stadium. The Gunners trailed 4-0 after 35 minutes, and some of their supporters began heading for the exits and driving home along the M4 back to London. They would miss another eight goals and an unlikely victory for Arsenal. Theo Walcott gave Arsenal a glimmer of hope when he lobbed Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici just before the interval, but at half-time Arsenal trailed 4-1. Second half goals from Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny, and Walcott tied the game at 4-4, and when Marouane Chamakh scored in extra-time, Arsenal led for the first time in the match at 5-4. But back came Reading. Pavel Pogrebnyak made it 5-5 with a header, only to see Walcott complete his hat-trick, and Chamakh score again in the dying moments. Arsenal had won a bizarre match 7-5. 5 Years Ago…….October 2008 Tottenham Hotspur were rock bottom of the Premier League and experiencing their worst start to a season since 1912, the year the Titanic sank. But their fortunes were about to change. Manager Juande Ramos was sacked, and 61 year-old Harry Redknapp was appointed as his successor. He got off to a good start when Bolton Wanderers were beaten 2-0 at White Hart Lane. 10 Years Ago…...October 2003 In their final qualifying group match of Euro 2004, England drew 0-0 with Turkey in Istanbul. England were awarded a penalty in the 37th minute, but David Beckham slipped as he took the spot-kick, and ballooned the ball over the crossbar. Turkish player Alpay goaded Beckham for missing the penalty, and there were ugly scenes in the tunnel as the players left the pitch at halftime. Nevertheless, the draw was good enough for England to finish top of Group 7.

John Hartson, the West Ham United and Wales striker, landed himself in trouble following a training ground incident with fellow West Ham player Eyal Berkovic. Hartson kicked the Israeli midfielder on the chin at the club’s training ground at Gidea Park in Essex. He was immediately disciplined by the club, and further penalties were threatened by the Football Association.

On one of the blackest nights in England’s history, Poland achieved a 1-1 draw at Wembley, a result that eliminated England from the 1974 World Cup finals. The Poles took the lead in the 57th minute, and although Allan Clarke levelled the score from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute, England were sent crashing out of the competition.

Our managers don’t escape the statto and as you can see, current manager Dan Trenkel is beginning to move up the table following Rovers great start to this 2013/14 season. He still has a fair way to catch Eddie Nash and Kevin Maddocks in second and first respectively but Ben Embury’s 46.8% win margin is a possibility this season if the current form continues.
