Dutch and Belgian delights abound on this cruise. Do you dream of seeing Rembrandt’s paintings in the city where he created them? On this itinerary, you’ll walk from a museum exhibiting Rembrant’s works out to a canal boat and cruise along Amsterdam’s waterways past houses built by the people in his portraits. Stroll through acres of tulips and understand why the Netherlands went mad for these blooms centuries ago. Sit at a table on an ancient city square with a Belgian ale and watch Antwerp’s students fl aunt the latest fashions. The Netherlands and Belgium have always been closely linked, sharing a Golden Age in the 17th century that resulted in a flowering of artistic genius that has never been equaled, producing Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, and Hals, to mention only a few; their work is celebrated the world over, and it hangs on the walls of the museums you will visit. This perfectly paced springtime cruise takes you to picture-perfect villages where you can climb the steps of a working windmill and try on a pair of clogs. Walk the cobbled streets of beautiful Bruges, so well preserved it is almost a living museum; explore vibrant Antwerp and shop for diamonds in the city that has long been the diamond capital of the world.

At the same time, you’ll find trendy boutiques and brilliant contemporary architecture, the continent’s busiest port, and a pan-European spirit in forward-looking, sophisticated cities. Who will enjoy this cruise: Those who wish to step back in time may visit living history villages, Medieval city centers, and 20th-century battlefi elds. Art lovers will enjoy three guided museum visits, and garden lovers will find a host of delights as well. A number of the country’s cultural icons and museums will mark milestone anniversaries with special exhibitions and events in Amsterdam's famed canal district.

Experience Dutch flower culture at its height among the acres and acres of tulips carpeting the Keukenhof Gardens. Cruise past vine-covered hillsides burgeoning with new leaves in the great Riesling-growing districts of Germany. Water has always been a dominant element in the Netherlands, both in its long struggle to hold back the sea and keep its land habitable and in its history of global trade. Now, though the 17th-century Golden Age may be gone, the Netherlands’ cosmopolitan outlook and entrepreneurial spirit remain. This cruise will show you both the most traditional side of Dutch life and the most contemporary. From the Netherlands, journey into Germany. Though modern Germany is better known for its industrial might than for its romantic landscapes, artists of all kinds have celebrated the beauties of the Rhine landscape for hundreds of years. Cruise along the Rhine— Germany on one side, France on the other—and savor French joie de vivre and German Gemütlichkeit. Bicycle beside the river, passing Roman ruins and Romanesque churches. Everyone believes in fairytales at Christmas time. Once upon a time, people gathered on cobblestone squares to buy the special tools and ingredients they needed to make the treats of the season. They kept warm with hot spiced wine, music, and games while they shopped and chatted with tradespeople. Those were the first Christmas markets, 500 years ago. Today, though the light comes from twinkling electric bulbs rather than torches, bonhomie and fun still prevail.
