SEAL OF T HE CO LU M B I AN CO L L E G E In 1819, the Reverend Luther Rice, Obadiah B. Brown, Spencer H. Cone, and Enoch Reynolds (all Baptist ministers) set in motion the reality of a college in the District. These men raised the needed funds to purchase land in the nation’s capital, petitioned the Congress for a charter, and began organizing a college. On February 9, 1821, President James Monroe signed the Act of Congress which created the College. By design of the Congress, a special provision was included which required that “persons of every religious denomination shall be capable of being elected Trustees; nor shall any person, either as President, Professor, Tutor or pupil, be refused admittance, or denied any of the privileges, immunities, or advantages thereof, for or on account of his sentiments in matters of religion.” The original seal was designed by James Peale in 1821, at the time of the founding of the Columbian College. This is the seal that the graduates are wearing today as medals. The seal features a Biblical lion lying down with a lamb and Greek text in an open book. The Greek translates to “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God.” In 1873, the name Columbian College was changed to Columbian University and the seal was changed slightly to reflect this. The Latin text around the outside was changed from “Columbiani Collegii” to “Universitatis Columbianae Sigillim.” In addition, some text was added to fill up the rest of the open book, since the Greek phrase only took up part of one page. In 1905, after the name changed to the George Washington University, the old seal was replaced by a completely new one. The original Columbian College seal is currently on display in the Memorabilia Room of Gelman Library.

2020 DIST ING UIS HED S C H O L AR S LT Brendan Danner is graduating with a Master of Arts degree in the field of Leadership Education and Development (LEAD), an interdisciplinary program offered jointly by CCAS’s Department of Organizational Sciences and Communication and the Division of Leadership at the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA). A commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, Brendan is currently assigned to the USNA as an instructor in a congressionally mandated leadership course that approximately 1200 midshipmen take every year. For his capstone project in the LEAD program, Brendan worked with a fellow student and a research advisor to develop three carefully researched, contemporary case studies to which students in the USNA’s moral reasoning course will now apply the moral theory they have learned in class. Brendan’s research will make a significant and lasting contribution to the USNA’s mission to train professional and ethical military leaders and provides an example of the “impressive scholarship, indefatigable work ethic, and conspicuous commitment

to the education and moral development of USNA students” that LEAD faculty members cited when nominating him for this award.
Sarah-Anne Gresham is graduating with a Master of Arts degree in the field of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS). A Fulbright student from Antigua and Barbuda, Sarah-Anne has completed a master’s thesis focused on postcolonial literature and feminist historiography that, according to the WGSS faculty members who nominated her for this award, employs “a truly original, interdisciplinary methodology” to address “sophisticated questions about voice, the archive, subaltern histories, and feminist storytelling.” Sarah-Anne’s scholarship is motivated by a political commitment to create lines of understanding across difference and to encourage others to see women of the Global South as authorities on their own lives and experiences. This commitment is also displayed in Sarah-Anne’s activism on behalf of women of color in Antigua and Barbuda as the co-founder of a feminist organization called Intersect, which has raised awareness about domestic violence, human trafficking, rape, and sexual harassment throughout the Caribbean, and in her

advocacy for the legalization of abortion in Antigua and Barbuda.

FAC ULTY MENTO RING AWAR D AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN GRADUATE FACULTY MENTORING The Award for Excellence in Graduate Faculty Mentoring is given to a faculty member nominated by graduate students. Mentoring and advising are crucial to the intellectual life and career trajectories of graduate students across the arts, sciences, and professions. A good mentor is a source of wisdom and expertise, an inspiring role model, a compassionate critic, a sounding board, an advocate, and a career counselor. The 2019-20 Award for Excellence in Graduate Faculty Mentoring is presented to Dr. Eiko Strader, Assistant Professor of Public Policy, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Sociology. Dr. Strader joined the faculty of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences in the Fall of 2017. A sociologist who studies gender inequality and public policy, she is engaged in research that seeks to understand how and under what conditions gender becomes relevant in predicting life chances across different levels of geographical location. In studies focused on the regional wage effect of immigration, marriage and motherhood penalties in the U.S. military, and the job performance of ex-felons, she employs intersectionality-informed multilevel models to examine intersecting sources of inequality, such as race, ethnicity, parenthood, and class, while simultaneously analyzing labor market policies or conditions that impact gender inequality. Dr. Strader teaches graduate courses in policy analysis at the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration, the graduate capstone seminar in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Program, and a graduate course focused on women, welfare, and poverty that is offered jointly by the WGSS Program and the Department of Sociology. She holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Students speak highly of Dr. Strader’s work as an instructor, academic advisor, and “practical example of what the future may hold for us as scholars.” She is recognized as “passionate teacher” who “wants everyone to succeed and meet the degree requirements of the program” but who “also wants everyone to do their best individual work so that they will be set up for success later on.” One student remarks that Dr. Strader has a particular knack for “draw[ing] knowledge out of students, assisting when they need it, but also pushing us to work a little bit harder.” Dr. Strader’s students are especially grateful for the care that she takes to monitor not only their academic progress but also their personal wellbeing. “I really enjoy the fact that she has asked me personal questions about myself and career interests,” one student reported, and “the fact that she starts each class asking if we are doing okay personally, acknowledging that this semester has been hard because of COVID-19 both academically, and in our personal lives,” is especially valued. In short, students report, “Dr. Strader goes above and beyond to offer counsel to her students….She steps up and makes herself available in a way other professors don’t.”

20 | GRADUATION CELEBRATION 2020
NATION A L CO UNCIL L E T T E R Dear Graduate: On behalf of the Columbian College National Council for the Arts and Sciences, I offer my congratulations on your significant achievement and welcome you to the George Washington University alumni community. As an alumnus of this great institution, I can fully appreciate the excitement of this very special moment in your lives. You are now a member of a select group of accomplished individuals, bonded by a college for which you will forever be proudly associated. I encourage you to remain involved in the life of the university and become engaged in activities of interest to you. The opportunities to make a difference are endless—from becoming an active member in the Alumni Association and organizing

regional and local alumni events, to mentoring a student, offering services as a career advisor or guest lecturer, and providing philanthropic support. My work as a volunteer in the National Council—which is comprised of alumni, parents, and friends who advise the Dean of the Columbian College—has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. I hope you find similar avenues of engagement and have a role in advancing GW’s promise and potential. Finally, we recognize your time here has required a high level of personal dedication and financial commitment. We are grateful for your investment and hopeful that your degree will lay the groundwork for future success in whatever career you choose to pursue. Again, congratulations! It is both an honor and a pleasure to welcome you as a graduate of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. Sincerely,
Benjamin Klubes, Esq., B.A. ‘87 Chair, Columbian College National Council for the Arts and Sciences Partner, Buckley Sandler LLP
