A word from our Food & Food Tourism Ambassador Matt Golinski Having grown up on a farm on the Sunshine Coast, I knew from an early age the joy of being surrounded by fresh produce. This exposure played a pivotal role in my decision to pursue a career in cooking. Now an adult and professional chef, that fascination and love of food and cooking is still with me. It’s one of the reasons why I am so passionate about quality, seasonal, local produce and why, when I was asked to become the Gympie Region’s Food and Food Tourism Ambassador, I was delighted to accept the role. The Gympie Region boasts a cornucopia of produce including some of the best seafood, beef, poultry, fruit, vegetables, nuts, oils and associated products you will ever taste. It’s a chef’s dream. Regardless of whether you are a home cook, backyard barbecuer or professional chef, I believe that it is so important to support our local producers in order to keep our health and our economy in good shape. I invite you to explore and enjoy the Gympie Region Food and Dining Guide and experience all this special place in the world has to offer.

Gympie is most famously known as the town that saved Queensland from bankruptcy when James Nash first discovered gold. Surrounded by charming historical buildings, it’s not hard to step back in time to the gold mining days. The town of Gympie is the golden gateway to many other treasures, such as the beautiful Rainbow Beach, which was recently named one of Australia’s top beaches. Travelling though Gympie to Inskip Point provides the fastest access point to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island when travelling from Brisbane or Sunshine Coast airports. The town of Gympie itself is beautifully presented with several well-maintained, manicured gardens, picturesque duck ponds with a state-of-art all abilities playground and family picnic areas. Visit the Gold Mining Museum or stroll though the main street, shop the many boutique stores and have a coffee at one of the gourmet cafes that line culturally-rich main street of Mary Street.

The Cooloola Coast is bordered by World Heritage Listed Fraser Island to the north, Noosa to the south and the lush green hinterland of the Gympie region inland. Part of the Great Sandy Biosphere, the calm waters of the Great Sandy Straight are famous for canoeing, kayaking, sailing and home to dugongs and an abundance of wildlife above and below the water. The coastal towns of Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach offer a different experience and pace. Tin Can Bay is a family friendly favourite with calm waters and a pod of friendly dolphins to feed every morning. Rainbow Beach is the gateway to Fraser Island adventure as well as 4WDing, horse riding, para-gliding, surfing and more. Why not take the back road, stop at a farm shop, and experience the lush hinterland east of Gympie at Goomboorian.
