Seriously this is absolutely my most favourite time of year,I love, love, love Christmas.Much of this I can thank my family for. For generations it’s been the same:big is best and more is definitely more! It’s all about the food, the food and the food. The decorations, table spread, tree, carols, dressing up kids (and adults) presents under the tree, Pop dressing up as Santa and lots of Christmas Lolly mix. It’s got to be fun and over the top. For me it all started with my grandfather. He was the ladies’ Haute Couture buyer for David Jones Australia and his visits to Milan, Paris and New York for the fashion shows were things I dreamed of being a part of one day. His taste was impeccable and this extended to Christmas. Each

year he would decorate their home in a theme from DJ’s and transform their lounge into a showpiece worth of window display. What he created was exquisite and magical. In all this though, he never forgot those less fortunate and each year my mum and her brothers and sisters would deliver gifts to the local orphanage, every child received a gift. Christmas is a time of reflection for many of us and for so many more it is a time of immense pressure with the added financial strain and emotional stress this time of year can place on families. It is times like this where we can all share the spirit of giving and sharing; and you see this ignited in people at this time of year. It’s the tough old boots that normally grumble around the rest of the year that start to soften a little and the army of secret helpers that emerge to make Christmas special for everyone.

Human nature is so that this army is made up of all walks of life many of these people are the people who are doing it tough already, but ‘someone is always doing it tougher’. Maybe helping others for a time means they can forget even for a little while their own troubles. In this issue we celebrate all things Christmas - where to shop local, stay local and enjoy local! We also say thanks to those that are part of this army that represent all of you out there. Challenge yourself and look at the giving you can do that doesn’t take cash or credit card or interest free finance. Our community is woven together with people who create a blanket of service and care for those who need it – perhaps you will add a stitch or two to it this year?

Stephanie Vogler Senior Constable Mum to 2, Mother-in-law to 1 Avid Gardener and Experimental Cook Volunteer Co-ordinator Victory Church Christmas Day Community Banquet
F
or the past 12 years Stephanie has coordinated the Christmas Day Community Banquet which has helped more than 2000 people in Gympie who otherwise would have had nowhere else to go. From single mums escaping domestic violence to the elderly and families in financial hardship she brings the Christmas Spirit alive and each year helps these people enjoy a day with no worries or cares – just sharing, giving and receiving. This is one of Gympie’s shining examples of just how our community really looks after each other. Having lived in Gympie for 20 years, Stephanie, a local Policewoman jumped at the opportunity to coordinate the very first Christmas Day Lunch and hasn’t looked back. “Christmas morning with more than 20 volunteers and 250 people many children is magical you see the frowns of their everyday life go away even if just for a day. The atmosphere is one of laughter, celebration, sharing stories and forming friendships. Spending time and getting to know people from all walks of life is wonderful.” The aim of the lunch is simple. That noone be alone on Christmas day. “You realise that there is always someone hurting. A meal will fill the belly but a smile and a chat will help fill the loneliness in their lives even if for a day”. They never turn anyone away, the room is set, the tables decorated and a two course Christmas feast served with all the trimmings and of course Father Christmas visits and each Child under 12 receives a gift wrapped especially for them. “The lunch is an initiative of Victory Church and costs over $6,000 each year to run and is made possible each year through the generous support of our sponsors who I would like to thank including Florists of
Distinction, Law Essentials, Hoopers Sound, Gympie Times and Stewart Terrace Butchery plus so many more and most importantly the volunteers.” We also asked Stephanie ‘What is the one thing you would like to see changed in this world in your lifetime?’
down from all the food you consumed. Great memories continue to be formed today. However for me as a Christian we stop to remember that Jesus is the reason and we thank Him for the role that He plays in our lives continually. Get Involved:
In recent times with the tragedies that have occurred with the floods, the cyclones and most recently more closer to home the loss of a fine young Gympie man serving his country. I have seen how communities and people can band together and help one another. In this you see the kindness of strangers from those wading through mud and muck to clean up after floods helping people they don’t know; to a stranger in the street helping another sitting with her until a family member came; to the person who holds a stranger’s hand when they are lying on the road injured and afraid. This is the spirit that we possess as Australians. We are a gutsy, determined people and when it appears that insurmountable odds are stacked against us our fighting spirit rises up. We don’t walk past someone who we clearly see is in need of our help. So to answer this question - I would like to see that we continue to show respect, compassion, support and love towards one another. With this attitude we will pull through as communities and individuals when life’s challenges come our way. What I most love about Christmas is… As a child and young adult I remember Christmas was a feast, lots of presents and a get together with aunts, uncles, cousins and a few ring-ins from down the road. Playing cricket, swimming in the dam and lying under a shady tree until your stomach calmed
Stephanie is always looking for helpers and donations of children’s gifts, food and beverage sponsors and also cash donations to assist in bringing this event to the community. If you would like to support her this year you can contact the Victory Church on 5482 8206. Refer to page 52 for more information.
Wendy Flikweert Mum to 3, Mother-in-law to 3 Gran to 6 Lab Technician at St Patrick’s College Volunteer for Neighbourhood Watch, St Johns Ambulance and Bluelight. Currently employed at St Patrick’s College as the Laboratory Technician, I have been at the college since 2004 when I started out as a Teacher Aide. My goal is to enjoy life as much as possible (probably because I’m on the other side of 50, and it’s now important) and to chill out and relax. I’m not doing too well at that, but as they say – ‘Practice makes perfect’ and ‘If don’t succeed at first - try again’.
M
eet Wendy, Wendy doesn’t like to say much about what she does, in fact we had a bit of trouble getting her to fess up to all her doings. But with some inside information we got what we needed, a wonderful story about a very humble, hard working person. Wendy is the epitome of the ‘silent volunteer army’. A single mum, Wendy brought up her 3 children whilst working full time but has devoted much of her life and still does to volunteer work. Wendy who is also currently studying a Cert IV in Laboratory Techniques whilst working at St Patricks College has been the St Johns Ambulance representative at our local Blue Light Disco’s since the early 1990’s.
Multiply 12 discos a year x 20 years and that’s 240 disco’s or 720 hours of strobe lights and pre-teens and she shows no sign of slowing down as she has also been with the Gympie branch of St John’s Ambulance since it’s inception in 1992. She trains every Thursday night at the St John Ambulance building on Apollonian Vale, and maintains her CPR and First Aid qualifications. Annually this translates to you when we attend local events including Campdrafts, Gympie, Kenilworth and Imbil Show, Muster, PGA Golf, Bull and Bronc, Gympie Saloon CarSpeedway, Gympie Auto Sports Club – Off Road Cars, Car Rallies, Angel Flight events, Kilkivan Horse Ride to name a few. 2012 will be the 20th Anniversary of the formation of the Gympie Division. Ok tired? I am. But we are not finished yet. Next its Neighbourhood Watch. Wendy is the District Area Coordinator for the Gympie District which extends from Tin Can Bay / Rainbow Beach to Imbil and through the South Burnett to and including Kumbia. Neighbourhood Watch comes under the umbrella of Crime Prevention and is supported by the Police District Crime
Prevention Co-ordinator Senior Constable Jon Roche. “We are trying very hard to increase the public awareness of Neighbourhood Watch and attract a younger generation to participate in the program” Whew. I love what Wendy wrote about slowing down, she shows no signs of it and as she says practise makes perfect. The other thing Wendy does is completely destroy the ‘no time’ argument when it comes to engaging, even just a little bit more in our community through volunteering. What is the one thing you would like to see changed in this world in your lifetime? World Peace would be a good starter. ‘What I most love about Christmas is...Family and Friends. Sue Manton Mum to 3 Commited Life Changer Passionate Advocate Business Manager Little Haven Palliative Care “Everyday feels like Christmas to me – I have three beautiful, talented, hilarious children, wonderful family and friends around me and a great passion for my work”
M
eet Sue Manton – many of us may know of Sue but how many of us know what drives her to do what she does – where does the heart come from to take on such a challenge? Read her story and maybe you’ll understand just that little bit more. To work in a field that you love is a gift and as Business Manager of Little Haven for the past 8 years I believe I have been greatly blessed. Started 30 years ago by Phyllis Little to provide “quality care for the terminally ill” Little Haven has grown into a comprehensive service providing nursing care for around 150 patients a year, as well as emotional support for our patients and their families and carers. The support provided free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week allows families the freedom and dignity of remaining in their place of choice until the end of their life.
Our nursing staff and respite volunteers the true angels working with them, know being involved and seeing the courage and selflessness of the patients and families we care for is a privilege.
and hoped the funds we received replaced the money we could have had from the sale of the ring. It is this level of support that drives me to ensure we are always there when any of our donors need us.”
Managing Little Haven is not without it’s challenges, aside from being emotionally demanding, Sue is faced each year with less than one third of the $450,000 budget needed being met by Government funding. This means a huge fundraising burden each year. “We are assisted in our efforts by over 100 hard working volunteers and the generosity of the Gympie community across all levels from service clubs, recreational groups, local businesses to the individuals who bring in their boxes of books for our sale or who never fail to stop at the raffle table to buy a ticket because “they want Little Haven to be there if they ever need it”.
Sue has a business plan that would make many a CEO’s cry, but her commitment to our mission and divine providence has seen Little Haven prosper in difficult times. As the Christmas season approaches her thoughts are drawn to the 144 families cared for this year whose loved one will not be at the Christmas table with them for the first time or the 52 patients currently being cared for who enter this period in the knowledge it may be their last Christmas.
Only yesterday an elderly lady visited the ‘pop up shop’ and bought in several pieces of costume jewellery she had purchased for her family as Christmas presents. “She donated them to ‘us’ to try and take the place of the stolen ring that was written up about in the local paper. She could buy more for her family

C
hristine gave up her Career Woman status in 2000 and took a change for the better becoming a Massage Therapist and a Reiki Master whilst trying to understand the simple ways of being a Buddhist. This latter part led her to volunteering. You could now almost call Christine a serial volunteer – in the nicest possible way!
from this unlikely bunch of helpers and Christmas signals only one thing - the Toy Run for St Vincent de Paul. “All the members of Gympie and Cooloola Branches get together as collectors and well collect! We pick up toys, non-perishable food/drinks and cash donations for families and kiddies in need at Christmas.”
Involved in many organisations in Gympie its people just like her, the individuals that give freely of their time that are the backbone to much of our community.
“Collection days are 11-12 November at IGA; 2 December at Centro and Coles and 3 December in Mary Street and again at Centro.”
Chris as she likes to be called comes complete with tattoos, short hair and a love of Harley’s. She is one spirited and inspiring woman! Christine has been a member of the Ulysses club for ten years and a committee member with the Gympie Branch for two. Currently one of her many roles is as volunteer for the Ulysses Club Inc – Gympie Branch as Social Coordinator
“The past two years I have organised the sausage sizzle at the end of the Toy Run at Nelsons Reserve but this year the tongs go to Office Works Noosa, special thanks to Shaw’s Butchers for the sausages and IGA Bakery for the bread. So this year, I get to ride!”
“It’s not a motorcycle club as such but a social club for over 40 year old motorcyclists with a common purpose and interest.” There are about 138 branches across Australia. 145 members in our region and our motto is to ‘Grow Old Disgracefully’ - but not in a bad way, just to be ourselves and have fun.”
The actual Toy Run takes place on Saturday 10 December. Hundreds of bikers gather at the Gold Mining Museum car park, Monkland at 7.30am for an 8am departure. After a trip to Tin Can Bay and back at 10.15am they are police escorted through Gympie to Nelson’s Reserve where representatives from St Vincent de Paul are on hand to receive the donations. Many of the riders get in the spirit of Christmas and dress their bikes a little and all bikers carry at least one toy on their bike. The escort is a wonderful sight and starts from the Victory Hotel.

the logistical aspect of what the club does is significant in collecting and delivering the much needed food and toys for St Vincent de Paul. Ultimately it’s our regions families’ in need that win. And yes whilst the method of transport may not be typical, it has maintained a wonderful tradition over the years and continues to bring our community together thanks to the spirit of these biking elves! What is the one thing I would like to see changed in this world – Peaceful communications between national leaders of all countries and an end to fighting wars that are not ours. What practical outcome does your organisation achieve – who is helped? So that those people who are doing it really tough at this time of year, do not miss out on Christmas Cheer. What I most love about Christmas is my grandchildren waking up early to see what Santa has left them. I even sometimes enjoy spending Christmas Day giving a hand with the local community serving Christmas Dinner to those less fortunate than us. Make donations to our Toy Run on the specified collection days or at St Vincent de Paul, or join us 10.30am 10 December at Nelsons Reserve. Your support will be most appreciated. I
t can be easy to get carried away in all the giving and receiving and forget about the special type of giving we all need to remember: the type that can change a life in a way that can keep giving for many seasons to come. Importantly I discovered volunteering can see you reap as much as you sow. In the Good Giving Guide (Penguin) co-author Mary Pearce says lending a hand to people in need can trigger the same sense of euphoria we normally experience after more personal pleasures such as sex or fine food! There are more than 35,000 charities to choose from but volunteering doesn’t have to mean a formal commitment; it could be as simple as helping out a friend.
Here are some interesting facts on Volunteering: In 2010 38% of the adult population (6.4 million people) volunteered and the estimated number of volunteers in Australia doubled from 1995 from 3.2m to 2010 6.4m Slightly more women 40% than men 37% volunteer. In 2010, volunteering participation rates were higher outside capital cities inner regional and ‘other areas’ 41-42% compared to 34% for capital cities.
[ lending a hand
to people in need can trigger the same sense of euphoria we normally experience after more personal pleasures such as sex or fine food!
[
The volunteer workforce in Australia was estimated to provide over $14.6 billion of unpaid labour in 2006-2007 The total annual hours volunteered in 2006 was 713 million.
SO here are a few ways to get involved, because you can, go on dish out the old fashioned type of giving. No cash or credit accepted
1. Give a drop of fine red
3. Donate your drive time
5. Festive fun that gives
2. Serve up some soul food
4. Just do something nice
6. Go green for the season
Forget shiraz and cab sav think the life saving kind it’s better than a Bordeaux and needed all year round. Donate blood it will only take about an hour and demand increases at Christmas and this literally does save lives. Call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au Help out at this year’s Victory Church Christmas Day Community Banquet. Volunteers are needed to help in the lead up and to serve more than 250 meals on the day.
Volunteers are crucial to the effectiveness of Meals on Wheels Services in Queensland. You can help out in the Kitchen, as a Driver (with own car) or Drivers’ Assistant – why not make up a team with a neighbour, relative or friend. Call 5482 3342 for someone. Mow a neighbour’s lawn, help an elderly friend with the shopping, a yard clean-up, look after a single parent’s children so they can do some Christmas shopping or simply have a break.
Get the family together and head out to Nelsons Reserve and enjoy the annual Toy Run for St Vincent’s or attend one of the events being held at the inaugural ‘A Christmas Affair’ and simply share the festive spirit.
Get involved in your local Landcare or simply challenge yourself to reduce, reuse, recycle. Do your own version of Earth hour once a week. Plant a vegie patch, walk don’t drive, save that wrapping paper for next year! 13

Seafood
What every summer day needs is a seafood spread think mud crabs, oysters, prawns, bugs lots of fresh lemon and aioli. Before you rush off and pick up your prawns freshly frozen and flown in from Vietnam think local. Right here we have our very own industry and you can pick up locally farmed muddie’s from Fishersman’s Haul amongst a plethora of fresh, locally caught seafood. The other top tip to seafood is Lee’s in Tin Can Bay. It’s worth the drive for what you can get here direct from the wholesaler and again you’ll be supporting the local economy.
Top drops for your table Strongbow Pear Cider $15.99 6 pack Serve on ice or from ice – cold! Strongbow was founded by Bulmer’s back in 1887 and was introduced to Australians in 1970. Strongbow Pear Cider is a lightly coloured cider with a noticeable pear aroma, fruity flavour and well-balanced sweetness. It is smooth on the palate and the aftertaste is a faintly woody pear character with a very refreshing, clean finish.
De Bortoli Gulf Station Yarra Valley 2009 Pinot Noir $21.45 Serve Chilled De Bortoli’s Gulf Station well price pointed for those seeking authentic Pinot thrills (and spills) without a hefty price tag. The finish is good, with plenty of spice and a little polished oak. It’s in medium bodied territory – there is enough weight and oomph to stand up to pork without any problems.
Rosemount Botanicals Pinto Grigio + blood organge and rosewater $14.99 Served chilled or as a spritzer! The refreshing texture of the Rosemount Botanicals Pinot Grigio is complemented by the sweet citrus influence of blood orange and finished with the delicate notes of the rosewater. Perfect with seafood, turkey all your white meats.
Clare Valley Rockridge Shiraz 2008 $15.99 A good all rounder for a shiraz and well priced. Great to have on hand as an everyday coiffeur. From Watervale, Clare Valley this is a full-bodied Shiraz. Deep ruby in colour, it has aromatics of blackcurrant and a hint of spice. The palate shows rich berry fruits of blackcurrant and blackberries with pepper and well-integrated oak.
Chandon Vintage Brut 2008 $45.99 Chandon Vintage is a fine elegant sparkling produced from grapes sourced from multiple cool-climate regions, with a slant towards quality Yarra Valley fruit. Toasty nutty nuances from ageing on lees is combined with strawberry and white peach fruit characters. (2007)
Bombay Sapphire Gin $52.99 Bombay Sapphire Gin is one of the more popular premiums gins on the market for a very good reason. This London Dry gin is distinctly gin but not overwhelming on any of the botanicals, which makes it ideal for mixing into any gin cocktail or refreshingly subtle on ice with soda, tonic or lemon. From the butchers block Grass Fed Beef v Grain Fed Beef Jason Buckley
Today grain fed meat is widely accepted as a quality product and while it may be tender, in terms of good health Jason Buckley of Stewart Terrace Butchery believes it is not the best for the animal, the environment or us. We asked Jason why? Grass fed cattle eat pasture grass and are free to roam and forage in a natural feeding environment. Often the meat produced is marbled, a term given when fine threads of fat develop within the meat muscle, keeping it moist and juicy during and after cooking, as well as being tender, deep red in colour, firm to touch, strong and rich in flavour with a soft, creamy fat. Grain fed cattle are often kept in feedlots in cramped conditions and are fed a variety of grains. Antibiotics are common-place in this unnatural environment, as are growth promotants and they fatten quickly due to their high energy consumption and lack of movement. Grain fed cattle can also produce meat that is marbled, although it will be pale, lacking in flavour and have higher amounts of saturated fat – pure white fat that is crumbly and hard – you know the stuff. Any growth promotants, hormones and antibiotics ingested by grain fed or any cattle leave residual in the meat that you will eat as the consumer. And then it also gets interestingly scientific. Feeding cattle grain increases their PH level
from 0 to the same acidity as humans, which is not normal. Additionally the recommended ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids is 4:1, grass fed beef delivers around 3:1, yet grain fed beef has ratios that often exceed 20:1. The correct balance of fatty acids, are important for cognitive and behavioral function. Grass fed products are high in the good fats but low in the bad fats, contain twice as much beta-carotene, almost three times the amount of vitamin E and considerably less calories than grain fed meat. Grass fed cattle also have boosted amounts of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) in their meat. This important fatty acid is believed to have a role in reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and accumulation of body fat. The decision as to whether to purchase grass or grain fed beef is often price, availability and education driven. All our beef is sourced from specialised local graziers conforming to our specific requirements. If you want to try grass fed then come and see our friendly staff at Stewart Terrace Butchery. We specialise in 100% grass fed, hormone free, antibiotic free beef and if you do your homework you will find that it is in fact cheaper than grain fed. We want to make it easy for you and offer free home or office delivery: Gympie, Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, Noosa and surrounds with no minimum order required. You also choose how your meat is portion cut and packed – everything customised to suit your requirements.
As a consumer, it is important to weigh up the cost of a product based on it’s quality and nutritional value. I find customers telling me our prices are comparable to supermarket meat and on many occasions cheaper. In my opinion pasture fed/grass fed wins hands down. An animal is obviously going to produce healthier, better tasting meat when it is raised in a natural environment. Aside from the health benefits, the taste of a grass fed steak cannot be matched!

Staycation quality time in your hometown Audrey Plate
We are having a family holiday this year… we are going somewhere with beautiful beaches with soft clean sand, enough waves for fun, gorgeous national parks and state forests with walks where we can discover all sorts of wonderful wildlife and plants. There are some fantastic restaurants where the service is brilliant and café’s with the best coffee and incredible cakes. The scenery is beautiful and the people are friendly. Where are we going? Nowhere, this is all right here in our backyard. Staycations are the new thing. Instead of all the hassle of packing everything, shutting the house up, arranging for someone to look after pets, check the mail and water the garden take a holiday in your home town. Visitors

a swim. A visit to the Sand Blow is a must (try a sunset from there – spectacular).
Instead of going away, take the money you would have spent on accommodation and spend it in here. Go out for dinner, buy your breakfast at a cute little café, spend time together. Relax, refresh and reconnect with your family – but sleep in your own bed. You are not allowed to catch up on that list of jobs, you are on holidays. Do all the things you would usually do on holidays. Take a tour, whether it be on a bus, bicycle, canoe or a horse – be a tourist, take lots of photos, wear a silly hat.

Christmas Day - where do you spend it?
I
s it any wonder we’re all a bit grumpy on Christmas Day? Firstly, you stay awake until the wee small hours playing Santa’s Little Helpers and constructing bikes and trampolines with butter knives. Then three hours later the kids wake you up by screaming excitedly in your ear, “It’s Christmas!” Shortly after you’re dragged out to a magnificent tree resplendent with home made decorations (because nothing says Christmas like badly painted toilet rolls) and celebrating this holiest of days by watching the kids unwrap the latest 1st person shooter for their PS3.
Lee Tompkins
S
ome families are lucky enough to have lots of drama on Christmas Day. You hear stories all the time of the Uncle John taking a swing at Cousin Frank and Aunt Mary trying to break it up. A part of me thinks that would be all rather fun being the sanctimonious observer of such bad behaviour, but the mature and sensible part says how lucky I am to have never had to experience any of that at Christmas time. I am one of the blessed ones – I get to choose between two families for Christmas. My family and my husbands and we go to each on alternate years. So for me it is a very special time as I spend it with my children, my family and my extended family and to my knowledge there hasn’t been a single punch thrown in my 50 years (but I do enjoy a xmas wine so I could have missed it). The one thing I have learnt is to buy myself some gorgeous trinkets to put under the tree and open with a delighted surprise. I know it’s about giving but really Mothers never stop giving so getting a few choice goodies to open on Christmas Morning is appropriate. I find it is easy to be calm until you hit the shops then you feel so incredibly unprepared – the festivity is everywhere and you feel so very under organised - but unless you are housewife of LA you simply cannot buy all that stuff – so don’t. Spend it on a good bottle of bubbly to share with the girls instead. Christmas is about getting to the beach and enjoying the free water, waves and sand, it is about having no routine and few rules and the 25th is one day in a whole season of jolly. For so many it is a challenging time so it is our job to share our good fortune and bring some cheer to others in any way we can. So dig deep into your heart and give in every way you can – time is the best present – give it in buckets and reap the rewards.
And I love it! I LOVE Christmas. Love, love, love it. I love my kids getting so excited they could almost burst: I love I’ve been able to yell “Merry Christmas!” at everyone for the last month: I love everywhere I go on Christmas Day I’m presented with enough food to ‘Feed The World’: And I love, love, love it’s the last day I’ll have to listen to the croonings of Bing Crosby for another 11 whole months. But do you know why I think I especially love Christmas so very much? Because I’m not the one driving two hours on the Bruce Highway, dragging the kids away from their new presents and demanding they be happy about it. Not that I haven’t done my share over the years. When my parents lived in Brisbane I was the one trekking down the highway on public holidays with all the other grim faced parents, Tracey reminding me to use all my fingers when I wave at the other drivers. Trying to arrange getting around to all the different family functions on the same day is the real Nightmare Before Christmas. Eating just enough at each so as not to make yourself sick nor offend your host is akin to a modern day Christmas miracle. And if there’s a marriage split it’s even harder. You try telling Grandma and Grandad they won’t be seeing their grandkids until the week after Christmas because it’s not your year. Nothing but coal in your stocking. Eventually you pull up in your driveway in the wee hours, carry your sleeping kids into their beds - their sugar highs thankfully having worn off two kilometers from home - down your first beer of the day then crawl gratefully between the sheets to catch some Z’s, only to have your wife wake you three hours later by shouting excitedly in your ear, “It’s the Boxing Day sales!” Is it any wonder the day after Christmas we agree to stay home with the kids and let the missus go shopping by herself? 33

Guest Bedroom on a Budget drab to fab in under $150 Marylouise Cartwright
T
he Christmas season is a time when we open our homes to friends and family. We plan the menus, decorations and parties with military precision. But we often place the spare room way down on the importance list. That is, if it makes it onto the list. However with some early planning and creative thought you can turn that bland spare room into a beautiful retreat for your guests. In fact, I was set a challenge by our Editor to decorate her self-confessed spare room disaster for under $150.00. Could it be done? After a short meeting with Ed, I established very quickly she was not fond of the 90’s bed in the room at all, but she loved the tired desk for its style but not for its look. Overall the entire look complete with her ‘glam sheet curtain’ as she put it just didn’t suit the rest of the decor in the home. With such a small budget to work with, I decided to head to the linen cupboard first. Linen could have been a big part of the budget but fortunately Ed had some quilt

covers that were going to work. I used these to inspire the Black and White colour scheme and this along with Ed’s distaste for the bed led to the need to paint the furniture in the room. After a really good sanding and a couple of coats of matt black on the bed and retro desk, I repositioned the bed so that the foot was towards the door (this is best whenever possible) and immediately the room was more open. Next - off to the shops, I needed artwork, a lamp, an alarm clock, water decanter, vase, curtains and something fun to do. I found three black mirrors and decided they would be a great backdrop for the bed. With a monochromatic scheme like this one it is important to lift it with some sparkle, so when I found the mirror base lamp, I knew it was perfect. I found an occasional table in the home, placed a European pillowslip over it and now I had a bedside table.
The window needed a light treatment for a cool and breezy atmosphere. Purchasing some inexpensive white sheer and tacking some black sheer fabric to the front achieved this. The tie back for the curtain is a garland of small mirrors. I chose curly finials for the curtain rod to suit the bed head. To decorate the desk, I covered some old novels with black and white paper. This is a very easy and inexpensive trick. I also like to make sure there is a game or puzzle book in the room. Now to the focal point... the bed. Iron and starch all pillow-slips and quilt covers. I have used a second quilt cover as a coverlet for the end of the bed. I took a cushion from the lounge that suited perfectly. Further inexpensive touches for the room that you may wish to consider are a spare set of keys, somewhere to set down a suitcase, a chair, hanging space, pen and paper, tissues and guest towels and soap. Finally, add something living to the room, a plant or flowers. This alerts the guest to the fact that the room was made up fresh especially for them. I managed to complete this makeover for just $10.00 over budget. Needless to say, Ed Is very happy! No labour costs are included but with a little direction from myself, and you providing the manpower you can achieve this in your home.
Surviving Christmas on one wage It’s all about perspective Jody Allen
C
hristmas might look terrifying to those on one wage or limited incomes, and it can be if you look at it that way...But what if you made it into a challenge instead...Being creative and thinking outside the square can ensure you can have a terrific Christmas without having to pay back the credit card debt for months afterwards. So how do you have the perfect Christmas without breaking the bank? Organisation! Yes it’s that simple. Sit down with pen and paper. Decide what food you would like, the gifts you’d like to give and receive, how to decorate the home, what activities to enjoy with the kids – include all the details no matter how fanciful, far-fetched or totally crackers. This exercise isn’t to punish you, it’s to find out what you would really like – so you can make it happen – on a budget! Make it happen (this is the fun bit!).
Gifts:
If Santa had to fund the gifts most kids receive today he would probably be mining oil in the Middle East or own Microsoft. Children don’t need multiple gifts, what they need is gifts that keep them interested, amused, entertained and hopefully educated! Think back to the gifts you received as a child, the simple things like play dough, board games, a sandpit or an easel and paints. Play to your child’s strengths and get them interested in something that will expand their mind, and (most importantly) keep them busy! If you have to buy them the latest gadget or computer game use good old fashioned layby rather then adding it to the credit card. Wait for sales, or even buy a gift voucher so
you can buy the item at a discount in the after Christmas Sales (if you can wait that long that is!).
Food:
The best part of Christmas is the food. It’s not truly Christmas until you’ve eaten so much you need a panadol and a good lie down, it’s the Australian way! If your going the traditional route of chicken and ham try purchasing ham already cut off the bone from the deli section of the supermarket, after all do you really need a huge expensive ham that will take up loads of room in the fridge, and take weeks to eat? Chicken pieces are not only cheap, they are delicious if marinated and baked or barbecued. The average Gympie Christmas Day is about 4000 degrees, so instead of the traditional hot Christmas pud, what about an ice-cream cake? They are so simple to make at home and you can make them a week in advance. Add chopped chocolate, marshmallows, Turkish Delight, nuts or even Christmas Cake and Rum! Then there are all the goodies, shortbreads, rumballs, caramelised popcorn, fudges etc. Make them from scratch (get the kids involved) If you keep it simple it won’t cost too much. Best of all, these types of yummies make fabulous gifts for work mates, neighbours or bosses.
If you want something a bit more fancy schmancy try making some pine cone decorations. Collect some nice looking cones and spray paint them silver or gold, add a colourful bow ($2/reel at the cheap shops) and a bit of silver garland to hang them – and for less than 10c each you can fill an entire Christmas tree with decorations that will last you for years. Your tree will look like Santa threw up all over it! If you have older kids, get them to search the net for home made decoration instructions and see what you can make from what you have at home. Paper cut snowflakes are great fun to stick on windows, and handmade painted baubles (with the year written on them) will make a memorable addition to the tree. There is also spray on snow if you really want to get into the festive spirit even though it will be 40 degrees in the shade. Christmas is such a special time of year, do yourself a favour, relax, have a few glasses of wine and enjoy it without the bad aftertaste of a credit card debt. It can be special without the big price tag. Let’s get back to basics and remember it’s all about family (and wine!
Decorations:
If you are crafty (cough cough)... making your own decorations is great fun and adds a special touch to the day, especially for the kids. Basic decorations like the old paper chains never go out of style, and are easy too.

How to transform your daytime look into nighttime Glam! As the party season begins sometimes we find our social calendar becoming double booked. So with a few easy steps you can transform a subtle day look into a sultry party look in less time than you would think. It’s been a normal day at the office and you applied your basic workday makeup 8 hours ago. You are wearing liquid foundation, some mascara and a nude lipstick. Lets add a few extras to make you red carpet ready in no time. Absorb the day’s grime and excess oil with some blotting sheets, this gives you a clean surface to work with. Now take a powdered foundation and a large fluffy brush and give your face a light covering. A powdered bronzer can double as a cheek colour and an eye shadow for a nice healthy glow. Next take black eyeliner and define your eyes, you can add as little or much as you like depending on the event you are attending. If you feel confident try applying a set of false eyelashes to really add some extra vaa vaa voom to your evening look. Last but not least add a pop of colour to your look with your lips, a bright orange red is perfect for this time of year if you don’t want to be too bold try using a coloured lip balm instead of a lipstick.
What you will need to take with you to transform your look. » Powder foundation » Powder bronzer » Eyeliner of your choice » A pair of false lashes and glue » A bright lipstick or gloss.
How to heat proof your makeup Summer can be cruel, especially to your makeup. Here are some hints and tips to help combat the most common dilemmas we face as the temperature rises. Be prepared the last thing you want is to have to fuss about finding products and tools when its hot. Prep and prime the skin- moisturize at least 20 minutes before you want to apply your makeup to give it time to absorb into the skin. A primer will be your best friend especially during the warmer months, try using a mattifying gel, it will keep sweating to a minimum and acts like an antiperspirant for the face. Use a water resistant foundation and mascara that will stand the test of time and heat. Swap eyeliner for dark eye shadow smudged along the lash line to save waxy liners running down your face as the day heats up. As the day/night continues you may be tempted to powder your face as the moister and shine starts to rear its head, but don’t you will end up looking cakey and over made. Instead carry blotting papers with you to absorb oil and perspiration. Finally a sealing spray is a fantastic way not only to seal and help keep your makeup in place it is also a fantastic way to cool and refresh you makeup during the hot days and night. For an extra cool refresh try keeping your sealing spray in the fridge.

Looking Sassy this Season Gina Drescher
Well summer is officially here, so it is time to refresh, re-lighten and reinvent your look! Words you will not hear this season are natural, soft and subtle. Colour is the statement with bold splashes of pinks, blues, purples and even greens. Reds are all amazingly bright and copper contagious. Think bold, contrasting and electric Katy Perry, Christina Agulira and Rihanna to name a few.
If permanently rocking the ‘wow’ factor isn’t your thing but your willing to walk a little on the wild side, walk the beat of my favourite saying ‘fake it to you make it’ with either semi permanent hair extensions or clip ins, these are a great way of having a taste without the total commitment. All this beautiful pigment needs to be complimented with stylish shape. Emphasise those beautiful cheekbones and eyes this season, with a gorgeous choppy textured pixie cut, work some medium hold paste at roots to define a fun, chic new day look or apply some serum for a sleek sophisticated night look. If taking that step is too much of a plunge, try a gorgeous long layered bob, I love this length as you can tousle, smooth, braid or updo your way into perfection, speak to your stylist about the many products available to achieve all these looks. For the longer lengths, smooth, bouncy and classic styles are all the fashion. Blow-wave smooth, apply a light setting spray, roll with hot rollers, velcros or large curling tongs, set and softly brush into shape, applying a light hairspray. The never aging bohemian, edgy style is a great fun, relaxed and admiring look. Part down the middle, grab the hot irons or rollers, curl into shape and finish with a loose braid, you’ll be the envy of others... Don’t forget your nails, shellac has taken the world by storm, especially those toes, so get some shellacing on those toes. Hot colours are bright pinks, canary yellows, sparkling silvers, electric blues, corals and eye-catching reds. PARTY TIME IS UPON US When we think of retro glamour Dita Von Tesse excudes this look, these retro, vintage and rockabilly 1940 styles, will be a huge request this season. These classic and extremely elegant styles are proudly being paraded on the red carpet, from beautiful finger waves, moon rolls, pompadour styles to cascading curls. It is safe to say these graduating teens will be celebrating in style. Hope this little insight inspires you to book your new you and with Christmas around the corner what better time to spoil yourself.

Stress Less at Christmas combatting festive anxiety Julie Austin
Christmas get-togethers, lunch with the family, opening presents, joyous carol singing … this is the Christmas dream for many people, but often the reality doesn’t match. If you get that sinking feeling at the thought of the silly season, then now is the time for change.
Stress… what stress?
S
tart by being specific about what brings on anxious or stressful feelings. By identifying the cause of the stress, you can manage it better. For example, if a particular relationship is frostier than a snowman, plan your time so that you can minimise contact. Send a card instead! If this isn’t realistic and you have to spend time together, either resolve the issue before Christmas, or decide that today is not the day for confrontation, sarcasm or reopening old wounds.
• Let off steam – anger usually masks another emotion, such as fear or frustration. Don’t let it ruin your day –walk the dog, put some earphones in and turn the music way up, Don’t expect people or experiences to change scream (try the garage, in the car with the for one day of the year. You are setting yourself windows up), clean windows or write it down (don’t post it – burn it!). up for disappointment. And if they do, then accept that it’s a Christmas miracle. of the holidays and no one puts in any effort to get together, then why will this year be different?
Tool kit
Tempting as it may be, alcohol and drugs never help, so avoid using them to “relax” or as a crutch to cope. Visualise yourself as Wonder Woman – deflect barbed remarks and thoughtless comments with your wristbands. They have no effect on you today!
Although managing stress during the holidays may require more work, it’s no different to managing it at other times. Putting together a “tool kit” to help you cope will serve you well at any time of the year.
Get real!
• Plan realistically – time seems to fly by in December. Doing the shopping and posting the cards early will at least alleviate some tasks.
Christmas stress can also be in the build-up and hype. Take some time to think about your expectations. Based on past Christmases, do your expectations match your experience? If not – does it really matter? Expecting a white Christmas in Queensland isn’t realistic. Similarly, if your family don’t make a big deal 42
• Delegate – don’t be afraid to ask for help, either. Christmas isn’t about you making everyone else happy and you doing all the work. Get the kids or your partner to help clean, cook, decorate and wrap – but don’t criticize or redo things. Let them really join in.
Plan for fun Allow some time also to relax and unwind. It’s your holiday too! Even if you host Christmas lunch, make sure there is time to catch up with others and relax. After all, isn’t that what the day is all about? Keep things simple and ask others to pitch in. If you have a tendency to play the martyr and insist on doing everything yourself, the cost will be sacrificing most of the day, and the company of others. Are you willing to pay the price?
Small children often have more fun with the box than the present. Maybe we should all take a lesson from them and enjoy the little things.

f you listen carefully right now, you may be able to hear the soft but persistent toll of bells and perhaps even a distant “ho ho ho”. You may also hear a not-so-subtle “bah humbug… Christmas!” burbling out of dear old Pearly’s crinkly mouth, coupled with “tis the season for some folly!” The old girl is, after all, a contemporary of the Charles Dickens character Ebenezer Scrooge.
dozens of soft toys and dolls. Back when Pearl was young she only had one or two special dolls (with maybe a teddy or a hand knitted golliwog to keep them company) but they were much loved and treasured. The acquisition of the latest ‘collectible’ softie may bring an initial squeal of pleasure, but soon it just joins with the pile of others in the big toy bin – how undignified.
Before you all ask about the lack of ‘yuletide spirit’, I will share with you what Christmas was like for Pearl back in the day and for me too, for that matter. I assure you Christmas for our wee darlings in the 21st century is poles apart from those festive days of yore.
So having had these random treats all through the year, what can possibly be given to make Christmas and birthdays special? The pressure is on for some really big ticket ‘wow factor’ item. Often these things turn out to be the latest overpriced ‘must have’ with very little actual play value, which by next Christmas will be out of date.
There are several points of difference of course, so let’s just concentrate on presents and the giving thereof. For Pearl and I, gifts were just for special times like Christmas and birthdays, or for special circumstances. For instance, if you happened to be in intensive care or you had crashed your bike and knocked out your front teeth there may have been a case for a comic book or two.
Yes, this pressure can be hard to resist; we adults probably remember how we felt when we had the oldest, least cool bike in the neighbourhood, and we want to feel that what our kids have is in keeping with their peers.

Printed vs Digital the value of a printed portrait Bambi Wixon
Do you still have a Cassette Player? Can your computer read floppy discs? I’m guessing you’ve answered no to both questions. Printing photographs on paper are becoming a thing of the past, bookcases filled with Albums are something we only see at our parents or grandparents home. They are being replaced with online Facebook galleries or computers full of digital files. In our highly visual world, we revolve around technology that is constantly changing and being superseded by the month! Consumer level cameras are becoming more affordable,
and the iPhone is now the number one camera being used to capture images. Now imagine the worst. Your computer crashes and you are left with a blank hard drive and no images from your 5+ years of photographic memories... that you never bothered to back up. I’ve personally experienced the disaster of a lost hard drive, and $4500 trying to retrieve the data from it – hundreds of clients’ portrait and wedding sessions I had photographed over a 2 year period. So what is the value of a Printed Portrait? Priceless when the inevitable happens. And I can promise you it will happen. Technology was never meant to last forever. Discs, hard drives, external hard drives... they all have an average life span of 5 years. We live in a disposable society. Take your refrigerator and television for example. We are flat out getting 5 years use out of them! And sometimes they only last until one month outside of the warranty.
Take this sad fact, only 3% of the worlds’ digital captures taken today are actually printed on paper... I came across an 80+ year old leather bound photo album, filled with beautiful photographs (from a Box Brownie) of a family. There were captures of new babies, weddings, the family car, a horse drawn wagon carrying wool bales, the kids standing in front of the family home. It was so lovely to look back through the pages and piece the family history together. I have this in my studio sitting right beside my current studio albums. I call myself an Historian. As I see the importance of history and I want to provide something that your grandkids can look back on too. What will you have to look back on in 50 years time?
Mac vs PC
important to know that a Mac can run both Max OS (Apples own operating system) and Windows. The ability to do this is by using a utility called Boot Camp which is included with every Mac, all you need to do is purchase a copy of Windows and you can then run both operating systems. Why would I want to do that? The answer is both operating systems can only run applications that are designed to run for that platform, although there are an increasing number of applications that are becoming available for both platforms.
the age old debate Mark Goding
I
n the computing world there has always been friction over which is better, PC or Mac. It would be nice to be able to tell you which one comes out on top, but the decision is as individual as our own personalities. Macs have in the past been the tool of choice by the creative industries, i.e. photographers, graphic designers, musicians and the recording industry. Whilst PCs have been used by the corporate world and majority of home users. But the table is starting to turn, with the introduction of the iPhone and the iPad, Apple is starting to gain a larger share of the market. To make the decision even harder, it is
Another decision to make is cost. Apple has a strong control over the price of their computers so you will find the price of a Mac really does not differ much from store to store. Whereas PCs are available from a large number of manufacturers along with the ability to custom build your own machine. You will generally pay more for a Mac, but Apple is renowned for their elegance and styling. Asking a Mac user or a PC user for advice on which platform to pick from can lead to some very one-sided advice. Mac fans known as
“Mac Evangelists” are well known for their almost fanatical dedication to the brand. Whilst a PC user may sprout that a Mac is overpriced and that you can purchase a PC with the same specifications of a Mac at a much cheaper price. A user who uses a PC at work quite often welcomes the change of converting to a Mac for their personal computing as it is different from what they use every day at work and makes a refreshing change. Whilst others may like to stay with the familiarity and security of a platform that they use every day instead of taking the plunge into an unfamiliar world. So, after all of this information have you been able to make up your mind as to which platform to use? If not, the best thing would be to speak to users of both platforms with an open mind and then speak to an Apple Reseller who deals in both Mac’s and PC’s and can give you advice on which computer best suits your own individual needs.

Preparing for Christmas Making arrangements for family time Selena Cartwright
C
hristmas is fast approaching - a season to be jolly, spending quality time with family, food, wine and all there is to enjoy, but for some families it is a time filled with anxiety and not all festivities. Many broken families dread Christmas and generally, unless there are formal arrangements in place, quite often one parent and their respective families can miss out on spending time with their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. If you are separated, have children, and don’t have any formal arrangements in place, now is the time to begin thinking about reaching some formal agreements in relation to the time that you will
46
spend with your children over the upcoming holiday season. There are two types of agreements when it comes to children known as:
Consent Orders, on the other hand, are a binding and enforceable agreement and there can be serious consequences if one party does not comply with the terms. I recommend that all separated parents have formal Consent Orders as it provides certainty, not just to the parents, but also to the children. Another common issue that parents face is children not being returned at the conclusion of holidays. In such cases, an application for a recovery order may be made, although this may not always be possible depending on the circumstances.
a. Parenting Plans; or b. Consent Orders.
To ensure some certainty for you and your family at Christmas, contact your Family Lawyer now to be sure appropriate arrangements can be put into place.
A Parenting Plan is an informal written agreement and whilst they can in some instances be useful, they are not enforceable. Therefore just because it may state when a party is to spend time with children or when children are to be returned to a parent does not mean that this is what will occur.
Myself and the team at Baldwin Cartwright Lawyers take this opportunity to wish all readers a safe and enjoyable Christmas and we look forward to providing assistance to you throughout 2012.

s a woman, you know that your health needs are unique, which is especially true when it comes to your oral health. Changes in female hormone levels during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause exaggerate the way gums react to plaque. Therefore being a woman you need to be especially thorough when brushing and flossing every day in order to prevent disease in your gums. Gum disease caused by bacteria is often a ‘silent’ disease going unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage. The bacterial infection can enter the blood stream causing a number of well-documented health issues. Research has shown that gum disease may be a factor in causing the following health complications. Heart disease: risk factors may be increased for a person who has untreated gum disease, together with nearly twice the risk of having a fatal heart attack. Diabetic patients: have been shown to be more susceptible to developing gum disease and their blood sugar levels may be more difficult to control. Respiratory problems: Bacteria that grow in the oral cavity can travel to the lungs causing respiratory disease such as pneumonia - especially in people with gum disease. In addition to the possible adverse health complications caused by gum disease, women have some additional reasons to maintain their oral health. Menstruation: gums may swell and bleed prior to period, or cold sores/ canker sores may become evident. Oral contraceptives: inflamed gums are one of the most common side effects. Pregnancy: studies show many pregnant women experience pregnancy gingivitis, caused by dental plaque building up on teeth and irritating the gums. Prenatal care is especially important. Pregnancy outcomes: pregnant women who have gum disease may be more likely to have a baby born too early or too small. Gum disease may also trigger increased levels of biological fluids which induce labour. Menopause: oral symptoms experienced during this stage of a woman’s life can include red or inflamed gums, oral pain and discomfort, burning sensations, altered taste sensations and dry mouth. Osteoporosis: a number of studies have suggested a link between osteoporosis and bone loss in the jaw. Researchers suggest this may lead to tooth loss because the density of the bone that supports teeth may be decreased. When combined with gum disease, osteoporosis speeds up the process of bone loss around the teeth. At Channon & Lawrence Dental Centre our Dentists and Dental Hygienists are trained to diagnose and treat gum disease. An oral examination and professional clean will let you know the state of health of your gums. These visits are usually recommended every 12 months, however if gum disease is found, then with you a plan is established to manage the disease. At your visit you will be provided with preventive care advice to help you maintain good oral health at home. Remember that gum disease is often a ‘silent’ disease, which can go unnoticed unless you have regular oral health examination, visits with your Dentist and Dental Hygienist.
Channon & Lawrence Practice Manager Helen Anderson Celebrates 20 years This is a year of celebration and milestones for Helen Anderson, Practice Manager of Channon & Lawrence Dental Centre. Not only will Helen be celebrating a ‘significant’ Birthday, she will also celebrate 20 years working at Gympie’s Channon & Lawrence Dental Centre. Although work plays an important role, Helen says the importance of the role her family plays in her life helps her to maintain work/life balance. Helen first began work as Receptionist in 1991 at Dr Brad Wright’s dental practice, then known as Mr Mott and Mr Wrights Surgery, located in Mary Street. During those early days many patients came to know Helen as the ‘voice and face’ of the dental practice. She
was the first person to contact when they had a problem or when it was time for their child’s first visit to the dentist. She has formed many long term patient friendships and has seen children grow up who now bring their own little ones for a first visit to the dentist. Eventually the dental practice in Mary Street outgrew the small rooms it occupied and moved into the totally refurbished ‘Nelroyd’, situated in its present location on the corner of Channon & Lawrence Streets, hence the name change. Throughout a change of premises, a change of ownership, two additional refurbishments and an ever expanding change to her role, Helen still represents the ‘voice and face’ of the practice, ably assisted by four receptionists. Helen has gone from Receptionist to Practice Manager and leads a team of 23 staff in one of the largest complete care dental practices on the Sunshine Coast. Practice Principal, Dr. Mark Cull, has watched Helen’s career blossom and grow over the 13 years they’ve worked together. Mark Cull comments; “as an employer it’s comforting to know that the day to day running of the
Interior Design Invite colour spring into your home Invite home Call Marylouise on 0439 636 064 www.yoursanctuary.net.au
practice is in Helen’s capable, hands. Helen is our ‘gatekeeper’ – the person who ensures our Team maintains the highest level of patient care. Her dedication to patient care for over twenty years is extraordinary and we all wish her a very happy twentieth anniversary”.

Born: Mortlake, Victoria Most wanted to be when I grew up: I never had an overriding ambition for a particular vocation when I was a school however I undertook an Engineering Degree which fortunately led me into Local Government .Whilst I have worked in other sectors, I have a total commitment to Local Government and am in a position which is both challenging but also very rewarding. Current Occupation: Chief Executive Officer – Gympie Regional Council Favourite food: As the saying goes, you cannot beat a good roast, must be my rural upbringing. On weekends I love to: Exercise, work up an appetite, and then enjoy good food and drink - guilt free! I most want to: Make a difference! Things that make me smile: A good British comedy. Why I do what I do: The diversity of regional Local Government and the outcomes that can be achieved for the community are a real highlight and one of the reasons I accepted this position. Further to this you get to meet some great personalities and contributors to the community. Helping staff to develop and achieve is another highlight. Ultimately it is all about making the Gympie Region a better place and that is pretty good position objective. Thing I would most like to see happen in my lifetime: Apart from the Bruce Highway Upgrade? Public debate on issues based on philosophical views and facts as opposed to the low quality discourse which often accompanies the consideration of important matters. Thing I can’t leave the house without: Phone-Check! Wallet-Check! Keys-Check! Tea or coffee? Both – but love a good quality simple flat white, no need to complicate things. Night owl or morning person? Morning Person, it is the best part of the day, my teenage children don’t seem to have discovered this yet. How long have I lived in Gympie: 3 Months! What I love the most about Gympie: The fact it’s a regional city which provides the best of both worlds. The gold heritage which reminds me of other gold mining cities I have lived in and the enormous potential it has. The diversity of the region is another feature, from Goomeri to the coast, the variety is extraordinary. My favourite sport: Have to say triathlons which I have been competing in for years, whilst they say hills are good for your training, maybe Gympie has gone too far! Person I admire the most – living or dead: I do admire political and industry leaders who operate successfully at a very high level, often into their seventies. We need to be careful not to pull up stumps to soon. Any article about Don Argus, former BHP Chairman always contains practical gems of wisdom. If I could change one thing globally it would be: Increasing people’s tolerance and acceptance. My vision for the Gympie Region is: A place which provides for people’s needs, whether that is employment, recreational or general interests. A region where residents can access opportunities and services without having to travel, and importantly a place where there is community confidence and self esteem, a place which people are proud to call home. 52
