ON MARS NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has found bright veins of a mineral, apparently gypsum, deposited by water. Analysis of the vein will help improve understanding of the history of wet environments on Mars. "This tells a slam-dunk story that water flowed through underground fractures in the rock," said Steve Squires of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., and principal investigator for Opportunity. "This stuff is a fairly pure chemical deposit that formed in place right where we see it. That can't be said for other gypsum seen on Mars or for other water-related minerals Opportunity has found. It's not uncommon on Earth, but on Mars, it's the kind of thing that makes geologists jump out of their chairs."

New Zealand Government -New recycling facility for building wasteThis new recycling facility is about greening the building industry, enabling 30,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste to be diverted from going to landfill. It will enable thousands of tonnes of wood, plasterboard, steel, plastics and aggregates from the construction sector to be sorted and re-processed into a reusable form. The $4.2 million facility is part-funded by a Government grant of $2.1 million from the Waste Minimization Fund, and has created 15 jobs in the local Onehunga community. The opening of this new facility is very timely with Auckland on the brink of its largest ever building boom. The house build rate has increased from 4000 to 8000 per year since 2011, and is expected to grow to over 12,000 homes per year. Each home constructed generates four tones of waste and it makes sense to recycle as much of this construction material as possible TejerĂas sur, monte perdiguero s/n 26500 Calahorra (la Rioja) Spain +34941145341 Email info@gypsumarnaiz.com www.gypsumarnaiz.com www.escayolasarnaiz.com

Reviewing 5 Levels of Gypsum Board Finish Level 0 is used in temporary construction or if final decoration is undetermined. No taping or finishing is required. A Level 1 finish is recommended in areas that would generally be concealed from view or in areas that are not open to public traffic. Level 2, in garages, warehouse storage areas and other similar areas where the final surface appearance is not of concern, a Level 2 finish is the recommendation. Level 3 in areas to be decorated with a medium or heavy hand and spray applied textures or where heavy-grade wall coverings will become the final decoration, a Level 3 finish is recommended. Level 4 if the final decoration is to be a flat paint, light texture or lightweight wall covering, a Level 4 finish is recommended. Level 5 finish is recommended for areas where severe lighting conditions exist and areas that are to receive gloss, semi-gloss, enamel or non-textured flat paints.

SORBAS, among the largest quarries in the world. The site of Sorbas is located in the municipality of Sorbas, southeast of the province of Almeria, Spain. The genesis of sedimentary evaporate deposits such as the site of Sorbas, takes place in shallow inland seas, partially open by reef barriers, thus seas isolated input cycles, evaporation and precipitation that cause saturation fields are generated Saline large extent and power. The site of Sorbas has power to 70m spread over four levels. Gypsum sedimentary series are interrupted by horizontal marl layers up to 2m power. The cast of the area is selenĂtico type, whose appearance is that of an aggregate of large crystals highlight the few interbedded by presenting and high purity of the mineral. Saint Gobain IbĂŠrica, S.A. It has reserves of over 80 million tons of high purity plaster at the site of Sorbas

HISTORY Archaeologists have discovered that the Romans and Egyptians used methods long forgotten, to mimic marble plaster time. However, it was in the 16th century, during the Italian Renaissance plaster contemporary recipes were conceived and perfected to perform complex deposits on furniture surfaces. In early Renaissance many marbles were rare or desired have been exhausted. Plaster could imitate those marbles and create colours and patterns that do not exist in nature. The use of plaster soon expanded into moulded ornaments, shafts of columns and even entire walls, a process that became known as Stucco Marmol. Marble using Stucco spread throughout continental Europe and finally to Britain in the 18th century featured Uses include marble stucco columns and pilasters England in Buckingham Palace and Syon House by Robert Adam. A significant advance in the technology of plaster was achieved in the mid-19th century with the advent of Keen's cement. Keens paved the way for a new method for the production of plaster called Marezzo, known in the US as American plaster due to its rapid acceptance and the prominent use of the mid-18th century until the Great Depression.

THE WORLD’S LARGEST UNDERWATER GYPSUM CAVE IN RUSSIA Deep beneath the waters of the Perm region lies the largest underwater gypsum crystal cave in the world. The Orda (or Ordinskaya) Cave in the shadow of the Ural Mountains holds a vast mineral deposit of gypsum that forms an extensive underwater cave network–the biggest of its kind in the world. Measuring 4,400 meters (14,435 ft.) long and up to 43 meters (141 ft.) below sea level, the Orda Cave is deep, dark, and frightening. With its countless winding passageways, caverns and galleries–many of which are still being found–the cave’s total length adds up to five kilometres. Adding to that thought its room temperature of less than zero degrees, the Orda Cave is somewhere you’d definitely not want to get lost the cave’s rich gypsum content can be accounted for by its proximity to the Ural Mountains, which is widely known in Russia for its mineral deposits. It’s also due to the mineral gypsum that the water in the caverns are greatly transparent. The waters are so clear that divers of the Cave can see over 50 yards ahead of them.

The potential of the mining sector in the Sultanate of Oman The Sultanate of Oman’s ma- or mineral resources include gypsum, limestone, dolomite, marble, chromite, silica, and copper. Several industries have grown up around them as part of the national development process that, in turn, have boosted the minerals sector’s contribution to GDP, as well as providing jobs for Omanis. The mineral industry of Oman is expected to continue to grow significantly in the coming years as international investors can make use of the country’s strategic geographic location as a distribution centre to India, the GCC, and other Asian and African nations. In the coming years, Oman will become increasingly important in supplying various industrial minerals to India and other Asian countries like gypsum, limestone, and dolomite. The capacity to export industrial minerals is expected to increase through the Port of Salalah, Sohar Port, and Duqm Port. According to the latest reports on the Indian cement industry growth scenario, the existing gypsum supply will be unable to keep pace with demand. Thus, the potential supply of gypsum from the Sultanate of Oman becomes an interesting prospect, and Omani gypsum will be the preferred source of imports in most of the regions in India, even including the northern region. Even after considering the maximum quantity of gypsum supply from Oman to India, the gypsum demand-supply deficit will widen on an annual basis, which will be reflected in an upward trend in the price of Omani gypsum.

2014 Drywall Artist of the Year Bernie Mitchell, Ontario, CA Congratulations Bernie Mitchell on winning the title of 2014 Drywall Artist of the Year! Bernie is a 20-year veteran of the drywall business. Bernie makes his mark in the drywall industry by creating detailed, life-like drywall art sculptures. Drywall art sculptures are custom wall designs made from drywall compound to create a three dimensional mural. This art form has seen a recent increase in popularity. Homeowners are discovering that drywall art sculptures customize spaces and add one-of-kind features to their home. Since these sculptures are entirely custom, homeowners are involved in the design process. “I've always encouraged my clients to participate in the design process,” Bernie said. “It's very rewarding to share in their enthusiasm for what was created together. APPLYING GYPSUM Gypsum mixes well with other dry fertilisers – particularly granulated forms. Gypsum is also useful as a carrier to assist in the uniform application of small quantities of zinc, manganese, boron and the other trace elements. Conveniently, 1 kg of gypsum has a volume of approximately 1 litre (1 tonne has a volume of 1 m3). Quick inter-conversion between mass and volume simplifies accurate measurement. Gypsum is easy and safe to apply using conventional dry-spreading equipment. Calcium most production fruit crops require between 250 and 500 kg/ha of calcium each year. A substantial part of this can be supplied in the form of gypsum with other calcium-containing fertilisers accounting for the balance. Commonly, nitrate is applied in the form of calcium ammonium nitrate (containing 27% of nitrogen and 8% of calcium) at the rate of around 300 kg/ha. This supplies only 24 kg/ha of calcium so that most of the required calcium can be supplied in the form of gypsum (300 kg/ha of calcium requires 1,200 kg/ha of gypsum). Sulphur Most horticultural crops need about 120 kg/ha of sulphur annually. About one third of this will come from the organic sulphur cycle within the soil, one third from a base dressing of gypsum (40 kg/ha of sulphur requires 220 kg/ha of gypsum) and the balance from other sulphur containing fertilisers. Soil Structure to obtain significant improvements in the structure of clay soils requires much higher rates of gypsum application (2,000-4,000 kg/ha of gypsum). Timing Gypsum relies upon rainfall to solubilise it and so move it into the soil profile where it has its effect, it is therefore best applied in early spring or after harvest when rainfall can do its work. It can, however, be applied at any time because gypsum does not damage plant tissues – even at high application rates. Calcium transport into fruit occurs mostly during spring. Where gypsum is being used to remedy a soil calcium deficiency, it is best to apply it well before bloom to ensure that the calcium reaches the feeder roots in good time. What is difference in plaster of Paris and gypsum? Gypsum is a very soft mineral composed of calcium sulphate dehydrate, with the chemical formula CaSO4·2H2O. This is then processed to form pop. Plaster of Paris, or simply plaster, is a type of building material based on calcium sulphate hemihydrate, nominally CaSO4·0.5H2O. It is created by heating gypsum to about 150 °C. 2CaSO4·4H2O → 2CaSO4·H2O + 3H2O (released as steam). A large gypsum deposit at Montmartre in Paris is the source of the name. When the dry plaster powder is mixed with water, it re-forms into gypsum. Plaster is used as a building material similar to mortar or cement. Like those materials plaster starts as a dry powder that is mixed with water to form a paste which liberates heat and then hardens. Unlike mortar and cement, plaster remains quite soft after drying, and can be easily manipulated with metal tools or even sandpaper. These characteristics make plaster suitable for a finishing, rather than a load-bearing material.

What Is Gypsum Cement? Gypsum cement is a type of plaster made primarily from gypsum, a soft mineral comprised of calcium sulphate dehydrates. Due to its strength, durability, and capacity to hold a polished shine, this plaster is used for several different purposes, including drywall, flooring, ceilings, and in the creation sculptures, statues, and effigies. Gypsum cement is different than gypsum plaster, or plaster of Paris, which possesses neither the high quality of the cement nor its unique characteristics. Gypsum cement is much harder and more reliable than plaster of Paris, and some brands are infused with special agents that can make the material fire retardant or lower the level of moisture absorption. In the manufacturing of gypsum cement, raw gypsum is mined from the earth and burned at an extremely high temperature to remove all traces of water. It is then ground to a very fine powder, and mixed with alum to speed up the drying process. When water is added to this powder mixture, pure gypsum cement is produced. Throughout history, this material has been used for its sleek look and resilient properties. Some of the first human civilizations made use of gypsum cement to create statues and sculptures. As the centuries progressed, gypsum cement remained a popular choice for buildings and monuments, but today it is often overshadowed by the more readily accessible Portland cement. Gypsum powder, however, is sometimes added to Portland cement to make it both light and hardy.

Luxurious Gypsum Ceiling Colour Decorations Nowadays, gypsum plaster becomes more famous in applying ceiling colour decorations for modern home designs. Choosing colour can influence the style of a house. To provide various gypsum ceiling decorations, stylish modern designs can get some alternative decorations. The placement and choice of what the ceiling become, it should consider other items. If we want colourful modern style, it may be got from combination of ceiling colour and lighting. Some lighting can make specific nuances, as elegant, harmony, and modern. Ceiling colour decorating makes its home interior design lovelier as it becomes the best choice. By using gypsum for the ceiling decoration, it will raise ceiling colour decorations for modern home designs to become luxurious style.

White Sand Dunes of Gypsum Close to the town of Alamogordo, White Sands is the world’s largest gypsum dune field as it expands over 275 square miles. Gypsum is not often found in sand form, especially not to this extent, but the ideal conditions of the White Sands National Monument are what allow the dune fields to exist in such a massive state.

Other Uses of Gypsum A non-toxic mineral, gypsum can be helpful to humans, animals, plant life, and the environment. While the majority of gypsum produced in North America is used to manufacture gypsum panels or building plasters, gypsum can also be used: As a soil additive (sometimes called land plaster) to improve the soil’s workability and receptivity to moisture, and to overcome the corrosive effect of alkalinity. Gypsum specifically benefits such crops as alfalfa, corn, cotton, wheat, and peanuts where substantial amounts of sulphate sulphur are required. As an additive in turbid water, particularly ponds, to settle dirt and clay particles without injuring aquatic life. To create surgical and orthopaedic casts. As a food additive. Gypsum (calcium sulphate) is recognized as acceptable for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use as a dietary source of calcium, to condition water used in brewing beer, to control the tartness and clarity of wine, and as an ingredient in canned vegetables, flour, white bread, ice cream, blue cheese, and other foods. As a colour additive for drugs and cosmetics. A primary ingredient in toothpaste. Gypsum also has played an important role in the entertainment industry. Historically, before the era of computers and high-tech special effects, film and television producers would drop “showers” of gypsum in front of the cameras to simulate snow storms.

Mold and Mildew Growth: Planning and Prevention Mold and mildew can grow on many different types of objects, including but not limited to building materials, if such objects are exposed to moisture and other proper conditions. If building materials get wet and are stored or installed with conditions of warm temperatures, high humidity, an oxygen supply and varying degrees of light, an environment exists that can support mold and mildew growth. If building materials get wet from any moisture source, that source must first be identified and corrected. If mold or mildew growth occurs, or if you suspect it might occur due to environmental conditions and moisture, a determination must be made to either attempt to dry and clean the affected areas or to replace the affected materials. Care must be taken in Tejerías sur, monte perdiguero s/n 26500 Calahorra (la Rioja) Spain +34941145341 Email info@gypsumarnaiz.com www.gypsumarnaiz.com www.escayolasarnaiz.com

Construction Waste Diversion & On-Site Disposal Contemporary green building standards emphasize the need to limit the quantity of material that flows to landfills. Typically, standards award credits for materials that are readily recycled and/or safely disposed on site using acceptable burial or dispersal methods. For example, The National Green Building Standard, created by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), awards credits when wall board is recycled. Gypsum-based materials, including gypsum panel products, meet many municipal or regional requirements for recycling of clean construction waste. Gypsum scrap can be introduced back into the production stream in limited amounts or used as a soil amendment or soil conditioner. In some areas, private operators recycle gypsum panels and provide a steady stream of “regrind” material to panel manufacturers for making new product. Information on recycling gypsum waste may be obtained on many websites, including the Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG), a program of the National Institute of Building Sciences. The WBDG offers a Construction Waste Management Database Clean gypsum scrap is suitable for on-site recycling programs. Several studies have shown that ground gypsum, spread at an even rate over or mixed with the top layer of soil, may be applied at a rate of up to 22 tons per acre on building lots. Machinery specifically designed to pulverize the gypsum to an acceptable size for application can facilitate the process. Green building standards generally prescribe the extent to which the material must be recycled on-site to qualify for a credit. The NAHB standard, for example, requires at least 50 percent (by weight) of construction and land clearing waste be diverted via on-site disposal to obtain credit. Gypsum Association guidelines for on-site disposal of gypsum panels in residential construction are available in the topical paper Residential Job-Site Disposal of New Construction Waste Gypsum Board.

The Art of Faux Finish Plaster is certainly not new, neither is polished plaster or faux finishes. Plaster has been traced back to several thousands of years before the birth of Christ. Few products in construction can proclaim such a long and rich history. Today, the new term faux finish is popular among the public and disdained by some plaster traditionalists. Some faux finishes can be linked to a variety of paint-based products. Others require skilled craftsman to emulate the look of the “old-style” products and should not be applied by ambitious do-it-yourselfers. When applied right, a lot of these faux finishes certainly have their place in construction that recall the real polished or Venetian plasters made from natural limes.

PLASTERBOARD It was 1890. In the works of the New York Coal Tar Chemical Company, Augustine Sackett and Fred L. Kane were looking at the death of an invention. On a large wheel they had hoped to make a board from straw paper and pitch for Tejerías sur, monte perdiguero s/n 26500 Calahorra (la Rioja) Spain +34941145341 Email info@gypsumarnaiz.com www.gypsumarnaiz.com www.escayolasarnaiz.com

lining walls and ceilings. But the pitch soaked through the paper, ruining all decoration applied to it. But then Kane suggested using manilla paper instead of straw paper and plaster of Paris instead of pitch. They poured in the thin plaster, turning the big wheel five or six times, left the board to harden, and found they had stiff, strong, new material plasterboard. At first, builders and decorators did not like this new product but after ten years hard work the idea was accepted. More factories were built and by 1909, Augustine Sackett was producing nearly 47 million square metres of plasterboard a year.

World Gypsum Producing Countries 06 feb 2015 As shown in the map, China is the largest producer of gypsum; in 2010 it produced an estimated 45,000 metric tonnes of gypsum. The second-largest gypsum producer is Iran followed by Spain, the United States, Thailand, Japan, Mexico, Italy, Canada, Australia, Turkey, Russia, Egypt, India, France, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Germany, Algeria, United Kingdom, Poland, and Argentina. In the United States, commercial sedimentary gypsum deposits occur in New York and Michigan. In France, gypsum is common in the marls and clays of the Paris basin, especially in Montmartre. Crude gypsum is used as a fluxing agent, fertilizer, and as a filler in paper and textiles. It is also often used as a retarder in portland cement.

ORIGIN OF GYPSUM DEPOSITS 03 feb 2015 Gypsum is found in many parts of the world. Gypsum deposits lie in flat beds of about six to eight feet in thickness, and are often inter-layered with limestone or shale. Gypsum deposits were formed millions of years ago when salt water oceans covered most of the earth, and as they receded, may inland "dead" seas were formed which, as evaporation continued, became more and more salty. As those salts precipitated, they formed various compounds in turn, one of which was gypsum. As millions of years passed, these salt deposits combined with decayed vegetation and other minerals, and eventually the result was stratified rock, with layers of gypsum and layers of limestone alternating, the whole covered over with many feet of glacial deposits.

CORNICES 27 ene 2015 The cornices are decorative elements of construction starts from Pharaonic Egypt and concluded by Greek culture from which they were made by the Romans themselves that spread to the rest of the world with his conquests. His magic has not been lost over the years and even today remain a big present. It is difficult to understand the powerful effect that causes something so small. The moldings are horizontal, and serve to mark the separation between different bodies, ie serve to articulate. However, their small projections are able to imbue an entire facade or interior of a room with a sense of movement, like the curves of the walls of a vessel. So you have to be especially careful to design them and mount them.

PAPERLESS DRYWALL 23 ene 2015 Pros and Cons of Paperless Drywall There are benefits and concerns to consider with paperless drywall, a relatively new product. Some advantages to consider when choosing it over traditional drywall include the following. It is designed to offer an improved level of protection from the growth of mold. The surface strength of paperless drywall is greater than that of standard drywall due to the added rigidity of the fiberglass covering. It is less likely to become damaged because of this attribute. Paperless drywall offers special advantages in high-moisture areas, such as basements and bathrooms, where mold growth is a big concern. While there are some great features offered that will be helpful in certain applications, there have been some complaints and concerns raised, as well. Paperless drywall is more expensive per square foot, compared to traditional drywall. In some areas of the U.S., availability is also a concern. Paperless drywall is a fairly new product and may not be available in some areas. A major concern that has been the topic of some debate is that paperless drywall is more difficult to install and finish than standard drywall.

Decorative Lime Plaster 16 ene 2015 The subject of decorative plaster is really a tale of two plasters – two plasters that are often confused as one, both having the same appearance but each having very different qualities. The first, the one plaster that is usually associated with early decorative work is lime plaster. Made from lime putty, lime plaster has wonderful versatility, but its reward is gained at a price, for lime is a deceptively difficult substance to use and its behaviour is often unpredictable. The other plaster comes from an easier to use, more popular material, a fine white powder capable of a quick predictable set. This is gypsum plaster. It is the most common material used today for plain and decorative plasterwork, but prior to cheap mass-produced gypsum plaster in the late 19th century, both gypsum and lime were used for decorative plasterwork, at times combined side by side in one decorative scheme where the two methods and materials complement each other. Lime plaster remained in widespread use for traditional vernacular buildings beyond the advent of fibrous plaster and cheap gypsum plaster, mainly because of ease of availability in the countryside.

Illegally handling, storing and depositing wallboard 16 dic 2014 A waste company has been ordered to pay Euro18,968 in fines and costs for illegally handling, storing and depositing wallboard. The case was brought by the Environment Agency. In October 2012 approximately 60t of broken wallboard from Tawmix Timber Products Ltd was found tipped on a site known as Poppy's Field beside an old airfield at Winkleigh, Devon. The material was contaminated with construction and demolition waste. A special permit is needed to treat and store this type of waste. In July 2013 similar wallboard was illegally used to construct a new fence at Tawmix Timber Products' business premises at Unit 2, Winkleigh Airfield. North Devon Magistrates' Court heard that Tawmix Timber Products was permitted to store, sort, separate, screen or crush waste wood at its site in Winkleigh. However, it did not have permission to accept gypsum based construction material such as wallboard, which requires specialist handling, treatment and disposal. The company had received advice and guidance from the Environment Agency on plasterboard and was aware it needed a 'variation' to its permit before it could accept this material. "Wallboard should only be recycled and recovered by specialist companies," said Environment Agency spokesman Sue Smillie. What is Gypsum? 06 oct 2014 The mineral gypsum originated between 100 and 200 million years, when the sea water evaporated. It is dehydrated calcium (CaSO4,2H2O) sulfate deposited in sedimentary layers of the seabed. In conditions of high pressure and temperature becomes gypsum anhydrite (CaSO4). Gypsum is a rock which is commonly found in soil and is used in construction and decoration in the form of gypsum and alabaster from 9000 BC. The facts show that the calcium sulfate is a substance without danger to health and environment

There are so many possibilities that the cast is one of the most valued materials in creating new decorations.

A TECHNIQUE DEVELOPED IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY ALLOWS ALL OF GYPSUM RECYCLING WASTE OF CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION 23 sep 2014 Research by Tecnalia-Construction also demonstrate the technical feasibility of recycling gypsum processing plant RCDs Basque, BTB Bizkaiko Txintxor Berziklategia, located in the town of Bilbao Urtuella, which already uses this innovative technology. he environmental problem is the plaster mixture with other materials. Separation technology installed in the BTB Urtuella plant, developed by TOMRA Sorting Gmbh (IRCOW project participant), is very effective in detecting the presence of gypsum infrared. Because of the varied origin of gypsum (precast plaster, gypsum plaster, plaster ceilings ...), the sample contains BTB separate from gypsum particles apparently pure until particles that appear next to other material, such as brick or concrete, with paint or fibers of various natures. Despite the presence of materials other than plaster, it has been found that the purity of this sample (in terms of the total content of calcium phases sulfate and water) is greater than 80%. DECORATION 15 sep 2014 The use of plaster decoration is not a new item, but if it is done with a few lines and unique ideas for each client. We can design custom design that suits your needs without limits. The limit is your imagination, from large windows create smooth plaster frames or decorated with a classic style make the rooms in your home are unique spaces with personality. Make use of soft colors for the walls with gray and tan as combined with the natural white of the plaster will create an enabling environment to feel comfortable.

Making curved running mould decorations 11 sep 2014 I've always liked the restoration is part of my job how to get back to being somewhat deteriorated with all its splendor is very comforting. The straight parts are made with a smaller running mould sledge, thus enabling the mould better to reach the often sharp bottoms. To make the curved parts, the sledge is mounted on a special board, fastened at the constructed centre for the curve, arch or chord - sometimes more than one centre is necessary. The centre point is fixed with special arrangements. Another method is to set up specially curved rules - and draw the running mould along these. They can describe any possible curved form.

Microban International secures new wallboard patent 01 sep 2014 Europe: Microban International has secured a European patent relating to treated wallboard, increasing its portfolio of wallboard technology patents that include the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Australia and Brazil. The patent covers the incorporation of an antimicrobial additive package into the wallboard to resist the growth of mould and mildew. The patented wallboard employs a two-part anti-microbial system and an innovative targeting approach to provide protection against mould, mildew and fungus. "These types of product patents help us to develop new specific formulations for dealing with microbial issues that wallboard may have, especially in humid or damp areas," said Ivan Ong, VP of research and development. "In wallboard, fungal issues typically occur at the interface between the paper and the gypsum core. Fungal infiltration of this nature can occur without visual cues until it becomes extensive and damaging. The patent provides an effective and manufacturing-friendly method to deliver a combinatorial package of antimicrobial agents to specifically target microbial issues this interface."

T hermal Properties 18 jun 2014 The importance of good thermal insulation in buildings in order to reduce heating costs cannot be over-emphasised. Lightweight building techniques (plasterboard on framework) can supply excellent thermal performance since the construction has a cavity that can be fi lled with the required amount of insulation. The interior plasterboards protect the insulating material and contribute, together with the vapour barrier, in preventing indoor humidity from getting in, or being trapped in, the insulation material.

A esthetics and Design 10 jun 2014 A richness of forms can be created in plasterboard or stucco. For architects, building with gypsum products allows them to unleash their creativity thus allowing them to answer, even more dramatically, to the demands of their customer while remaining within an aff ordable budget. In short, Gypsum allows the creation of stunning interiors in any and all styles, from the Classical to the Modern.

Use and the raw materials such as Gypsum rock, etc., this TC has produced the following standards: 05 jun 2014 Those ISO published standards were drafted on a voluntary basis. Their objective was in line with the ISO defi nition, which is to defi ne means of communication between the manufacturer and the customer providing the customer with quality assurance and product reliability.

RECYCLABLE 02 jun 2014 It is one of the few fully integrated industries within the construction products field. The Gypsum Industry covers the whole life-cycle of the product. Indeed, the companies which extract the mineral “gypsum” also process it and manufacture the value-added products and systems mainly used in construction. Gypsum products are eternally and fully recyclable as they always keep their natural properties during use. Therefore, the gypsum companies strive to effectively recycle the products at the end of their life-cycle (demolition waste).

Natural Gypsum 26 may 2014 Gypsum is usually white, colourless or grey, but can also be shades of red, brown and yellow. When calcined, it is partially dehydrated and becomes a fine white powder - commonly known as the ‘Plaster of Paris’ - which hardens when moistened and allowed to dry. This form is known as natural Gypsum. The gypsum process is quite simple: when Dihydrous Calcium Sulphate, also known as crude Gypsum, is exposed to certain thermal processes, Calcium Sulphate phases with little or no water of crystallisation are produced, and these later combine with free water to again form dehydrated set Gypsum. These processes, known as dehydration or rehydration, form the basis of Gypsum technology.

Decorative Plaster 21 may 2014 Plaster powder, mixed with water, manually or through the useof silo-supplied spray systems, is used to create an eff ective and aesthetically-pleasing lining for brick and block walls, and for ceilings. Gypsum’s adaptability in application lends itself to moulding and shaping. Since time immemorial, Gypsum has been used by skilled craftsmen to create decorative plaster mouldings.

Acoustic Properties 19 may 2014 All building types need the acoustic performance of their internal spaces to be carefully considered. Unwanted noise from outside the building, from adjacent buildings and from other internal spaces, can have a detrimental eff ect on the quality of the internal environment.

The Gypsum Economics 14 may 2014 Global extraction of Gypsum and Anhydrite rose from about 42Mt in 1960 to a peak of around 112Mt in 1999, an average annual growth rate of around 2.6%. World output then declined to around 108Mt in 2001 before rising to 111Mt in 2003 .

F ire Properties 12 may 2014 The chemical formulation of Gypsum is CaSO4,2H2O - Calcium Sulphate Dihydrate -. In nature, Gypsum occurs in the form of crystals. Thanks to the presence of water in Gypsum (H2O), one square meter of plasterboard of 15 mm thickness contains around 3 litres crystal water. Through the action of fi re, the crystal water evaporates and a protective layer of Gypsum is formed. Behind this layer, the material under fi re attack remains at constant temperature around 100oC as long as water is released from the Gypsum, impeding the spread of a fi re to other parts of the building.

Unequalled as a Material for Interiors 07 may 2014 Gypsum is virtually indispensable for the interiors of homes and offi ces, and indeed all types of building where people congregate such as schools, shops, airports, etc. Its superior performance in providing everyday comfort, in fi re resistance, thermal and sound in insulation, heralds an ever greater role for it in buildings of the future. In fact, the safety and protection of people and property against fi re, and the eff ective thermal and acoustic insulation of buildings depends, more often than not, on the unique properties of Gypsum. And many of the attractive features of modern interiors would be impossible without the versatility of Gypsum as a building material.
