year ago, in February 2014, scientists and local community members at the Caiman House Field Station in Yupukari, North Rupununi began a new phase of their long-running research project on the ecology of the black caiman, the largest aquatic predator in Guyana and the Amazon. The researchers started collecting stomach content samples from live black caiman to investigate what kinds of food they like to eat and if the caiman prefer different prey in different areas of the Rupununi. This research is important because it will lead to better understanding of how the diets of caiman and people overlap, and if they compete for the same resources. This year the Caiman House Field Station staff and scientists are continuing their research on black caiman feeding patterns, and they are beginning yet another phase of their important work: the research team has started attaching tracking devices to the tails of some of the black caiman in the region to gain insight

However, the caiman may move around a lot during the wet season when the Rupununi floodplains fill with water and sometimes even become connected with the Amazon watershed. The males may especially move quite extensively as they look for food and access to females, who typically do not move around as much as the males. This research is crucial for understanding what types of habitats the black caiman prefer during the different seasons and if there are specific movement corridors that are heavily

In an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, Rosenblatt stated that he was prompted to begin this new research project in Guyana because of his interest in how large predators and the humans who live with them are able to co-exist. He visited Guyana for the first time in 2011 and was captivated by the gen-

into their movement patterns during the dry and wet seasons. The new research, funded by National Geographic Society, Rupununi Learners Foundation, Stihl, Farfan and Mendes, and Dubulay Ranch, uses small radio transmitters that produce “pings that can be heard

from as far as 15 miles away by a person holding a radio signal receiver and antenna. The researchers then follow the signal until they find the caiman and mark its location using a GPS device. The batteries on the tracking devices should last for two years, and by relocating the caiman again and again

over that two-year period, the research team would be able to decipher the movement patterns of the black caiman. On the basis of research on other crocodilian species around the globe, the Caiman House Field Station research team thinks the black caiman would not move around very much during the dry season, when water levels are low in the Rupununi, because fish and other prey become concentrated and isolated in rivers, lakes, and ponds, providing the caiman with relatively abundant local food supplies.

used. It would also reveal whether caiman return to the same nesting and feeding sites year after year, and how human activities may impact caiman movements. Ultimately, understanding the movement patterns of the black caiman would lead to better and more efficient conservation and management strategies, allowing this amazing predator to thrive for generations to come. n route to Lethem or Brazil from Georgetown, when you cross the Essequibo River, you pass through the Iwokrama forest on the road that is famously called “the Linden-Lethem road”. This road is 72 km in length and presents opportunities for spotting various species of wildlife, including many birds. Iwokrama is protected, and the public is encouraged to respect the wildlife and enjoy the views as no hunting or fishing is allowed within this protected area. Along this road one may also notice the beautiful array of plant life, many of which are termed “pioneer” or “secondary” species. Pioneers are the first species that establish themselves in areas that are opened up; they are essentially “light-loving” plants. A common species seen along the road is the Congo

Pump (Cecropiaspp), one species of which is used to make a tea that is said to have health benefits. Congo Pump shares a beautiful symbiotic relationship with ants as they offer glycogen rich tissue as food and in return receive protection against other predators by the ants. Additionally, the Futui (Jacaranda copaia) can be seen. When flowering, it displays a stunning purple flower on its crown, and its wood is used for light work, including coffin making. There is also the Palecouria guinanesis, which belongs to the coffee family and displays beautiful red, finger-like flowers. Beautiful and majestic vines are also found growing along the road. The Passiflora spp are known for gorgeous floral displays. But be careful with the ‘Hold Me Back’ vine (Mimosa sp) that has spines all along the branches, which can leave a

The great thing about Jazzercise is that when you hear a specific song, no matter which Jazzercise class you attend all over the world, you can follow the routine with ease because it is the exact routine taught by all instructors. In an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, Valerie Browne, a professional fitness trainer who brought Jazzercise to Guyana, said when she was on vacation in the US over a year ago, she attended a few exercise classes and immediately realized that the Jazzercise program was never brought to Guyana and no one has never even heard of it. “As a matter of fact, it is not currently in any of the Caribbean countries, but it is in countries like Iran, Egypt and 29 other countries. I strongly felt the need to remigrate to Guyana to introduce this awesome program to my fellow Guyanese. Knowing that Guyanese like music and love a dance party – and the music we use is music heard on the radio, I felt obligated to share this wonderful program with them – and I'm so glad I did,” Browne stated. he Miss Global International Guyana is not just about pageantry but equipping its contestants with the necessary tools for self-development and effecting change in society. According to pageant public relations officer, Melicia Partab, having a systematic approach to the development of its contestants, the Miss Global International Guyana franchise offers a recognized programme that fulfils the necessary attributes a successful ambassador should have when representing Guyana international-

Partab added that having an equal balance of the three “super factors” is what lends to the added touch of difference to the pageant’s training programme. These “super factors” are self-growth and confidence, physical and inner beauty enhancement, and cultural and traditional patriotism. Self-growth and confidence contributes to the readiness of a successful ambassador. It also contributes in helping the contestants be comfortable in their own skin and equips them with the necessary tools for self-growth and confidence. This involves attending activities such as toastmasters, lecturers, public relations seminars, radio and TV appearances, and interviews. Physical and inner beauty enhancement supplies the added benefit of a successful ambassador, ranging from healthy eating, routine workouts, structural gym and personal body care, to therapeutic sessions, relaxing yoga and spiritual meditation. These are a few key activities that are used to enhance this factor. Cultural and traditional patriotism encourages contestants to be true to themselves and everyone around them. Partab mentioned that upholding the standards of our culture, traditions, customs, beliefs and patriotism creates the attention and secures the everlasting positive impression of our country to the target audience by the ambassador. “Charity, being the best policy, is no different for our franchise. Adopting the Shaheed’s Girls Orphanage over a year ago and exclusively working to improve the lives of these girls, our franchise and am-

bassadors will continue our efforts to sustain our contribution to charity. As a matter of fact we are in the process of securing the first ever computer work station for the girls. This was our little surprise to the girls,” Partab disclosed. Partab pointed out that being a part of the Miss Global International Guyana quest, each contender will be equipped with the necessary rounded knowledge and experience in the world of pageantry. She further stated that becoming more aware and being empowered by their new strengths, while overcoming their weaknesses, each ambassador will have the opportunity to experience this new chapter of their lives. Although only one will move on as the winner, each girl will take away the knowledge and experience of a lifetime. The contestants vying for the Miss Global International Guyana crown are Alicia Nichola Bess, Faydeha Cathylyna King, Kiswana Abimola Jefford, Nalicia Ramdyal, Seistra Allen, Shalisa Harripersaud, and Shameeza Wong. Miss Global International started in 2005 and has been a success since then, with its contestants gaining recognition both locally and abroad. The pageant’s mission is “Uniting the World through Tourism with Beauty”. It attracts ladies with intelligence, poise, awareness, wonderful personalities and drive from all over the world. The pageant was formerly known as the Miss Commonwealth Beauty pageant. The Miss Global International Guyana winner would be selected May 2 (tentatively) and would represent Guyana at the Miss Global International 2015 pageant slated for June 23 – 27 in Panama.

The Shaping of Guyanese Literature

By Petamber Persaud

T

he theme for World Storytelling Day 2015 is Wishes. Wishes could be of a good or bad nature. You can’t be indifferent to wishes, and you can’t be too careful for what you wish. (Remember the foolish couple and their three wishes.) But generally, wishes ought to give positive vibrations, a good feeling, euphoria, a feeling of goodness. Incidentally, storytelling also ought to give a feeling of euphoria. So if we put storytelling and wishes together, we ought to get an explosion of goodness. The themes for the previous five years were as follows: 2010 - Light and Shadow

2011 – Water 2012 – Trees 2013 - Fortune and Fate 2014 - Monsters and Dragons A theme acts as a guide; giving direction to content. But this applies where the storytelling machinery is well oiled, institutionalized and blessed with proper funding. What else can you wish for! Storytelling is as old as the history of man, enmeshed in oral literature. But World Storytelling Day is a manifestation of the new millennium that has its roots in several initiatives started at the end of the previous millennium. For instance, in the early 1990s, Sweden organised an event labelled, All Storytellers Day, falling on March 20. In the late 1990s, storytellers

in Perth, Australia, coordinated a five-week long celebration of story, commemorating March 20 as the International Day of Oral Narrators. Nearer to home (Guyana), places like Mexico and other South American countries were already celebrating March 20 the National Day of Storytellers. When we think of storytelling, we tend to relegate it to the past. Who wants to sit down around the fireside, a hammock, under a silk cotton tree, by the black water canal…and be molested by mosquitoes and sandflies while smoke gets in your eyes? Who want to relive the past, the invaluable past that has entrusted us with so much wisdom? The future is blazing screens and apps. Who wants to learn from Kwe-

kwe, Maticore and Katha, which is the Hindi word for story? The future is screens and apps. Who wants the old community spirit? The future is as bright as this box in my hands. Stories make up a great part of our lives. But ironically, storytelling is not a prominent part of our agendas unless, of course, if we make a living by telling stories or selling stories. Wishes, on the other hand, take up a great part of our lives.

Wishing is a major part of our agendas. Wishing, dreaming or daydreaming can be both good and bad. A good thing is that it could extend the imagination, crossing borders, drifting in realms unknown, into magic realism like “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Marquez or “The Ventriloquist’s Tale” by Pauline Melville. When we think of wishes and of wishing, we might conjure images of witches and wizards - embodi-

ments that could or could not grant us our wishes. Or we may conjure those embodiments as evil causing us harm. Or lead us on the right path. Yes, like in the “Wizard of Oz”, “Alice in Wonderland”, Aladdin in “The Book of One Thousand and One Nights”, “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “Cinderella” and Harry Potter stories. Or we may take flights of fantasies in order to direct how we want a wish to unfold. In this way, we create stories. For instance in our own rags to riches story, we go down a certain path to wealth; if that path is too slow, we could speed it up. That’s one good thing about wishing and dreaming. If the situation gets ugly, we could back up and start over. Fascinating stuff that – creating stories. So, if we put story and wishes together then the celebration of World Storytelling Day 2015 ought to be quite intriguing. assava bread is considered a traditional staple of indigenous Guyanese, and a national dish today. Cassava, or manioc or yucca, was the staple crop for pre-Columbian South America by the time the Portuguese arrived in Brazil in 1500. Travelling to Africa for slaves, the Portuguese introduced the cassava to

the continent around 1550 and to India by 1700. It is claimed to have reached Asia by the start of the 19th century via the Spanish. Cassava bread, which is made after preparing the cassava, is a basic staple usually eaten with fresh fish or a meat dish. Cassava bread making produces other ingredients that are used up to prepare other traditional indigenous food items such as casareep, which is a main ingredient in pepper pot, and farine, which is used to make porridge, or used like rice in a meal. Cassava bread is made by first peeling then grating the cassava before extracting its toxic juice with a traditional matapi. The cassava is then pounded in a mortar and

he kidneys filter extra water and wastes out of your blood, and make urine. The kidneys also help control blood pressure so that your body can stay healthy. Kidney disease means that the kidneys are damaged and they can't efficiently filter blood. This damage can cause wastes to build up in the body. It can also cause other problems that can harm your health. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) occurs when kidney damage occurs slowly over many years, often due to diabetes or high blood pressure. When someone has a

sudden change in kidney function—because of illness, or injury, or have taken certain medications—it is called acute kidney injury. The main risk factors for developing kidney disease are diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease, and a family history of kidney failure. The US National Kidney Disease Education Programme suggests keeping your blood pressure at the target set by your health care provider to help keep your kidneys healthy. It also advises a reduction of your daily salt intake, while choosing foods

that are healthy for your heart, such as fresh fruits, fresh or frozen vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods. Limiting your alcohol intake, being more physically active and losing weight if you are overweight can all help keep kidneys functioning normally. If you smoke, take steps to quit, since cigarette smoking can also make kidney damage worse. If you have diabetes, control your blood glucose level. It is important that you get your blood and urine checked for kidney disease, and manage your diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

he Government of Canada website healthycanadians. gc.ca, notes that the biggest problem pigeons cause is the amount of faeces they produce. Pigeon droppings have been associated with a variety of diseases, including histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis. Histoplasmosis is a disease caused by a fungus that grows in pigeon droppings. The fungus can also be found in bat droppings or in the soil, and is carried by the wind. When removing droppings, people may breathe in some of the fungus. When exposure is high, the fungus can cause infection. People with weakened immune systems (like cancer patients or people living with HIV/AIDS) are generally more at risk of developing histoplasmosis. The disease cannot be transmitted from person to person. Contact your doctor if you develop flu-like symptoms after being exposed to bird or bat droppings — especially if you have a weakened immune system. Cryptococcosis is another fungal disease related to pigeon droppings and grows in soils throughout the world. A major risk factor for infection is a compromised

immune system. However, cryptococcosis can also develop in people with a normal immune system. People may have no symptoms or may have headache and confusion, a cough and an achy chest, or a rash, depending on where in the body the infection is. The diagnosis is based on culture and examination of tissue and fluid samples. The best way to control pigeons is to change their environment: Remove roosting niches and seal any crevices, large

openings, and entrances in high areas to discourage pigeons. Screen off water sources (like rooftop air conditioners) from which pigeons might drink. Never leave food out where pigeons can get it. Keep garbage containers closed. Dispose of garbage on a regular basis. On flat roofs or ledges, use bristling wires, also known as porcupine wires, or sticky pastes that will discourage pigeons from landing and gathering.

Malik who is engaged to Edwards denies the cheating rumors. "I'm 22 years old... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards," he tweeted, before ranting, "And there's a lot of jealous f**ks in this world." He added, "I'm sorry for what it looks like x." Ahead of 1D's con-

cert in Manila this weekend which now no longer features Malik, the Bureau of Immigration in the Phillippines previously asked the band to post a nearly $5,000 bond for Malik and bandmate Louis Tomlinson each after they were purportedly caught on camera smoking marijuana last year. "The condition is intended to protect the public interest should the band members commit any violation during their stay in the Philippines," a rep for the bureau said. "We want to see their pure, raw untainted talent," without drugs.

Malik was reported struggling with substance issue after he fell ill and missed "Today" show last year. "I'm really angry and upset by what was said," he said when asked by Matt Lauer about the rumor. "I was really ill at the weekend, that's why I couldn't fly to America." After finishing their Asian leg, One Direction will play in Johannesburg and Cape Town. It's unclear if Zayn Malik will reunite with the band during their South African concerts. A source tells The Sun he plans to quit the band for good. (AceShowbiz)

He wrote on his Twitter, "Barry Satera Kenya u won't attend a soldier's funeral uhkros da street that u kild yet u hav time 4 brackets? s a d." Barry Satera Kenya refers to Obama's African heritage, as his father Barack Obama Sr. came from Rachyuonyo District in Kenya even though Obama himself was born in Hawaii. The meaning of word "Satera" is still left unexplained. His anger appeared to be fueled by Obama's appearance at the bracket on ESPN, an annual tradition during his presidency, in-

stead of attending a soldier's funeral. The soldier's funeral that Sheen refers to may be the funeral of a twostar general, Major General Harold Greene, who was killed in Afghanistan. However, his accusation that the funeral had been ignored by the administration was incorrect since the ceremony was attended by

Kate Middleton reveals baby’s due date

K

ate Middleton revealed when Prince George will be a big brother. The Duchess and her husband Prince William are expecting their second baby at "mid-to-end of April," she said to a volunteer who asked her at the Brookhill Children's Centre in Woolwich on Wednesday. Kate, 33, was meeting with parents and visiting an on-site nursery at the children’s centre. The centre is run by Home Start charity, an organization with a network of 15,000 volunteers that help parents and young families.

One question still remains though, the baby's gender. The royals are still keeping mum about that, but many are speculating based on Kate's fabulous materni-

Vin Diesel chokes up over Paul Walker's death: ‘I lost my brother’

V

in Diesel dashed straight from the hospital where he and wife Paloma Jimenez had been staying with their newborn baby on Wednesday, March 18 — because nothing was going to stop him honoring his late friend Paul Walker at the first Californian “Furious 7” screening. The action hero, who became a dad of three on Monday, March 16, was choked with emotion as he spoke about the making of the his latest movie, and told fans how usually he and Walker spent time together at the premieres of the “Fast and Furious” films. "I had to come from the hospital, and I had to introduce the first screening in California where the whole franchise started," Diesel, 47, told the audience. "As you know this was a very personal and important film to us, every time when

I saw the movie at the premiere, Paul Walker and I would go off to the side, and he would always tell me, 'Vin, the best one's still in the can,'" he continued. After telling viewers to be mindful of the fact that others have to wait a little to see the film (which hits theaters on Friday, April 3), so to keep the story line quiet, the actor's mood became somber.

"This was a labor of love," he said. "It was in some ways the hardest movie that I ever had to do because the relationships that you see on film are so real, when the tragedy happened, I lost my best friend, I lost my brother." Overwhelmed by emotion, Diesel paused. "Tonight..." he said, before struggling to compose himself. (US Magazine)

Guyanese artist captures African culture in thought-provoking paintings

I

Artist Philbert Gajadhar explains his art at a past exhibition at Castellani House

n the 1980s, UG lecturer and prominent national artist Philbert Gajadhar began a gradual intellectual interrogation of his works’ content and its specificity to a singular ethno-cultural group within a multi-cultural context. This was fuelled by the similarities he observed between the traditional African practices described to him by Dr Doris Rogers, (based on her experiences in Africa) and those he observed among Hindus in Guyana. However, his interrogation did not materialise in his art of the period; the germination had only begun. Gajadhar’s musuku tree (a Bemba symbol of fertility) did not burst forth from the soil and bear fruit until

"Bana mayo bafuma kumabala III - Women from the farm" (2012)

his time in Botswana (20032006) led him to Zambia, and a personal journey that resulted in a deep familiarising with Bemba culture, deepened by a further five months spent between 2012 and 2013. Gajadhar approaches his reference to Bemba culture from lived reality. His is not an artificial study of a culture of fascination for a superficial transplantation of its symbols, lore and beliefs. Gajadhar has integrated Bemba with his Hindu identity and multicultural situation of nurture. Consequently, while the paintings are largely instructive on an aspect of Bemba culture and belief, they reinforce the points of synchronicity with Guyanese culture, even offering in some instances traditional symbolism and, by extension, memory for quotidian objects whose symbolism was lost to the agonies of the impositions on the African in South American space. The hoe, for instance, has significance in relation to the hut and the pestle in relation to the mortar. These find presence in Gajadhar’s imagery.

Gajadhar’s paintings are largely based on the chisungu ceremony of the Bemba. Through the ceremony, a girl is initiated into womanhood as she is instructed on her duties as a wife and a mother. Within the ceremony, ceremony-specific wall and floor paintings are made and special pottery dug up from secret hiding places and used. These objects of ceremonial art are called Mbusa. Each Mbusa has an associated didactic song and dance, and through their use reflect the Bemba belief that by seeing rather than hearing one is better able to learn. In like manner to Caribbean song, the songs of the Bemba have double meanings so they can be sung among children and their true meaning not be discerned. In Guyanese queh queh, the dances/mimetic acts are performed and the initiated girl is expected to mimic the actions of the performers; this mimicry is a demonstration of learning. If she successfully performs her mimetic acts, she performs a special closing action as she says, “With

me, I have grown, I have just picked the beads.” These beads would have been used to bless the ceremony and the ceremony’s matron with right words to inspire the young woman to be a good wife and a good mother. While Gajadhar’s content is informed by the Bemba, his aesthetic is a culmination of stages in his journey exploring the technical nuances of his medium and the synthesising of influences from artists as diverse as Dudley Charles, Bernadette Persaud, Wifredo Lam and Picasso. From Charles he claims influence on his use of colour, the layering of paint in washes, and the manner of “breaking up” of figures and the space within the picture plane. These influences from Charles are evident and not surprisingly, as he claims Charles as his most significant artist-influence. Mwansa cembe – the white eagle and Mafwasa – the heart stones, the most recent of the paintings, show Gajadhar returning to his early aesthetics source – Dudley Charles (and by extension Wifredo Lam). As with songs, Gajadhar’s paintings read differently depending on one’s situation of initia-

tion. “My paintings discuss the iconography of the Bemba figuratively or abstractly. [To] some things, I react abstractly [and to others] figuratively. The primitive flatness of the figure reflect the folk art

tradition of Zambia and the colours [are] of the African sunset with each [...] carefully contained within its own space,” Gajadhar explained. (Text by Akima McPherson, Lecturer, Division of Arts, University of Guyana)

Net neutrality rules let FCC police future ISP conduct

he U.S. Federal Communications Commission's new net neutrality rules allow the agency to police future network management practices and business models rolled out by broadband providers, raising concerns among critics that an activist commission will inject itself into ISP board rooms. "We don't really know where this is going to go, but the FCC is going to

sit there as a referee," Republican FCC member Ajit Pai said Wednesday, during a Senate hearing. "The problem is, nobody even knows what the game is, what the rules are." FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler and other supporters of the net neutrality rules have defended the future conduct standard, saying it's an attempt by the agency to keep an eye on ISPs without adopting

overly restrictive bans on business plans. The net neutrality regulations contain so-called bright-line rules prohibiting broadband providers from selectively blocking or throttling legal Web traffic and from charging Web-based services from paying for prioritized traffic, but the future conduct standard gives the FCC the authority to prohibit other practices going forward. It takes its name from a credence (credenza is Italian for credence) which is a small table where the bread and wine rest before consecration in Christian services, and later a Renaissance sideboard used mainly to rest a

Run vinegar through the washing machine every six months to keep it fresh. If you have an aquarium, save the water each time you change it and water your houseplants with it. It's full of nutrients and makes a great fertiliser.

The most important life skills your child needs to learn

L

ife skills are essential for any human being, and learning them begins practically from the moment a child is capable of learning. These skills will help him or her to be happy and successful throughout childhood, adolescence and ultimately adulthood. 1.Self-discipline. When it comes to money, chores, homework and time management, children need to learn self-discipline. A self-disciplined child grows up to successfully manage her/his own money, job, personal and so-

cial responsibilities, and time. 2. Social skills. Children need to learn how to share, speak to and generally interact with others. Having this life skill can make a strong impact in adulthood. 3. Healthy decision-making. Children need to learn problem-solving skills. From school problems to friendship issues, children need to be guided so that they learn to make good decisions, which would carry on into adulthood. 4. Impulse control. Children need to develop impulse control to avoid impatience, frustration and other such negative attitudes. Impulse

control helps a child manage his behaviour, his academic progress and social relationships, which remains with him throughout life. 5. Emotional regulation. Children must learn to manage their emotions. If a child is angry, for example, he should be taught that negative outbursts or aggression is not an option. 6. Confidence. When a child gains confidence in herself, it means she is learning from her mistakes, able to accept criticism and has a positive approach when tackling her problems. A confident child would be more independent in her adult world than one who lacks self-esteem.

A Criticism of Critics How often have the critics, trained To look upon the sky Through telescopes securely chained, Forgot the naked eye. Within the compass of their glass Each smallest star they knew, And not a meteor could pass But they were looking through. When a new planet shed its rays Beyond their field of vision, And simple folk ran out to gaze, They laughed in high derision. They railed upon the senseless throng Who cheered the brave new light. And yet the learned men were wrong, The simple folk were right Robert Fuller Murray

inspiring stories

The Mare and the Fawn S tories of unlikely animal friendships abound on the internet. While it is sometimes hard to knowthe actually true stories, there are officially documented cases of animal friendships from odd pairings such as owls and dogs, monkeys and capybaras, a leopard and a cow or cheetahs and a dog, to name a few. There are also amazing stories of animals rescuing other animals, like Bonnie, a Morgan Quarter horse who rescued a newborn fawn. It was the sometime in June 2006 on his farm in Montana USA, when owner Bob Muth noticed a coyote family keeping tabs on a white-tailed doe that was giving birth in the barnyard. It wasn’t long

he weightlifting champion was always bragging about his strength. Everybody was tired of listening to him boast. Finally, an old man had an idea. “I bet you,” he said to the weightlifter, “That I can wheel something around the block in a wheelbarrow - but you can’t wheel it back.” The weightlifter looked the old man up and down and said, “I’ll take that bet!” The old man smiled, gripped the handles of the wheelbarrow and said to the weightlifter, “Hop in please.”

A

family that spent their vacation on a farm the year before wanted to return. But the only thing they thought was wrong with the farm was the noise made by the pigs.So they wrote to the farmer to ask him if the pigs were still there. The farmer wrote back: “Don’t worry. We haven’t had any pigs on the farm since you were here.”

A

motorist travelling to the backwoods came to a stream whose bridge had washed away. He saw a hillbilly sitting nearby whittling a stick. “How deep is this stream?” the motorist asked. “Not too deep,” the hillbilly said. “Think I can drive across it?” “Shucks, I reckon ya can,” said the hillbilly. So the motorist drove into the stream -- and the car sank immediately. He barely escaped with his life. “I thought you said I could drive across! That stream was at least 10 feet deep!” he said angrily to the hillbilly. The hillbilly scratched his head. “Funny,” he mumbled, “it only reaches up to the middle of the ducks.”

before the coyotes began trying to separate the newborn from its mother. According to Muth, one coyote was trying to distract the doe while another coyote was circling behindthe fawn to grab it. However, while watching the impending tragedy in front of him, and before he could try to help, Bonnie the mare stepped in between the fawn and the coyotes. She then placed herself over the fawn. Seeing the horse planted firmly in front of them, the coyotes gave up and went away. Muth said he believes that the coyotes knew they didn’t stand a chance with the mare. After the coyotes left, the mare licked and nudged the fawn to stand. The fawn managed to stand and even tried nursing but the mare was too high up. The event lasted about 20 minutes, after which the doe, re-

covered from the birth and able to stand, called to her fawn. The two made their way to the fence where the doe jumped over and the fawn squeezed through to disappear into the forest.

Bonnie meanwhile, leaned over the top rail, watched, and whinnied as they left. (Source: “Unlikely Friendships”by Jennifer S. Holland (2011) The Mare and the Fawn, Page 97)

f you have ever written the letters, ‘IOU’ then congratulations, you wrote a grammagram-- and the promissory note, “I owe you”. Grammagrams are wordsor sentences when pronounced are entirely letter sounds(or number sounds). Examples of grammagrams include: NE (Any), XL (Excel), MT (Empty), IC (Icy) NME (Enemy), DVS (Devious), CDB (See the bee) RKDN (Arcadian), XLNC (Excellency) or, adding other characters: LMN8 (Eliminate) XPDNC (Expediency), CNMNE (Sea anemone) or XNR-8-N (Exonerating) They are not always completely accurate sounding (syllable stretchers like S or ES for “yes”); there are grammagrams likeXLR 8 10 (Exhilarating) or X-10U-A-10 (Extenuating), where

other characters used or substituted sound close. Grammagrams found in phrases or sentences include INVU (I envy you) and ICURDVS (I see you are devious), or, combined with regular words and characters: U are 2 good 2 B 4-FR true. (You are too good to

be forever true). Or letters and numbers only. B4 (Before), F-10 (Often) and B9 (Benign). Seen in writing, double letters are pronounced as the plural names of the letter (PP sounded as peas or UU sounded as use): PP 4 U 2 UU (Peas for you to use)

Today’s texters may be familiar with many more. Nevertheless, text-messaging shortcuts like GR8 (great) are not grammagrams since the letters are not pronounced individually. Grammagrams mustn’t be confused with initialisms, which are words that are actually formed from letter sounds: deejay (DJ), emcee (MC). Abbreviations are not grammagrams. Owl Monkey

he owl monkey (of the genus Aotus) is also known as Night monkey or Douroucouli because of its nocturnal lifestyle. It is the only monkey known to be active at night instead of during the day. The owl monkey leaves its sleeping site at about 15 minutes after sunset and, after foraging and eating during the night, returns at sunrise every day. They are widely distributed across southern Central America and northern South America. Some species of the genus are found only in certain places in these regions. Owl monkeys are frugivores ( they specialize in eating fruits) and supplement their diet with flowers, insects, nectar, and leaves. They are skilful at grabbing flying insects out of the air or snatching them off of a branch. According to the Primate Info Net of the National Primate Research Centre, University of Wisconsin, owl monkeys have been successfully employed in biomedical research on malaria since the 1960s because of their natural resistance to the parasites that cause the disease.

FIRST LADIES OF THE WHITE HOUSE EXPLORING THE REALMS OF HISTORY, SCIENCE, NATURE AND TECHNOLOGY

PART THREE OF FOUR — COLLECT ALL FOUR AND MAKE A GIANT POSTER

Cut and attach to Part Two

Some great quotes I live a very dull life here ... indeed I think I am more like a state prisoner than anything else. — Martha Washington Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. — Eleanor Roosevelt Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest. — Lady Bird Johnson There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all. — Jackie Kennedy You may not always have a comfortable life, and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once, but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have, because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own. — Michelle Obama

Failed marriages Three first ladies had first marriages that ended in divorce. Rachel Donelson Jackson divorced her first husband Lewis Robards. Rachel died a few months before Andrew Jackson took office and is not considered an official first lady. Abandoned by her common-law husband, Florence Kling Harding was granted a divorce in 1886. Betty Ford is the third presidential wife whose first marriage ended in divorce.

Changing times In the 20th century, it became acceptable for first ladies to take on responsibilities apart from the traditional role of planning and hosting White House events and parties. The invention of radio and television made these women more visible to the public and allowed them to take on challenging political and social issues.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) Wife of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd president of the United States from 1933 to 1945. This outspoken woman transformed the role of first lady by becoming actively involved in many political issues. She gave press conferences, wrote a newspaper and magazine column and hosted a weekly radio show. Eleanor was famous for her humanitarian work and supported equality for women and blacks. After Franklin died, Eleanor served in the United Nations. Elizabeth Virginia “Bess” Truman (1885-1982) Wife of Harry S. Truman, 33rd president of the United States from 1945 to 1953. It could be said that Bess was a reluctant first lady. She was not happy when her husband accepted the role of vice president to Franklin Roosevelt, and her fears came true when Roosevelt died and Truman became president. Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson (1912-2007) Wife of Lyndon B. Johnson, 36th president of the United States from 1963 to 1969. Known as Lady Bird since childhood, this capable first lady worked behind the scenes and helped fund her husband's campaign for president. She was a strong advocate of civil rights and education for women. Jacqueline Lee “Jackie” Kennedy Onassis (1929-1994) Wife of John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States from 1961 to 1963. Jackie was famous for her beauty, style and elegance. She was much loved by the American people, who mourned with her when John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Bess Truman

Lady Bird Johnson

Surprising facts Bess Truman worked as her husband’s salaried Senate aide. She never gave an interview as first lady. Mamie Eisenhower appeared in television commercials promoting her husband for president. Mamie Eisenhower

Peru artists divided over removal of Lima murals

L

ima’s decision to paint over murals in its historic centre has created a division within the city’s artistic community, with one prominent painter defending the municipality’s decision to erase the art. Lima Mayor Luis Castañeda confirmed that his administration was painting over murals that were commissioned during the administration of his predecessor and political rival, Susana Villarán. Villarán’s administration, a strong supporter of the arts, had paid for the paintings in an attempt to spruce up Lima’s gritty downtown, whose colonial architecture has been falling apart for years despite the area being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site more than 25 years ago. Several of the murals have now been covered by yellow paint, the colour of Castañeda’s right-wing Solidaridad Nacional party. “The murals don’t go with the Historic Centre of Lima,” Castañeda said. “Tomorrow [Friday March 13] all of the murals in central Lima are going to disappear,” he said in comments broadcast on AmericaTV. Most artists and political progressives have come out against Castañeda’s move.

On Saturday, the director of Lima Museum of Art (MALI), Natalia Majluf, said she would prefer the murals not be erased. The MALI is Lima’s top arts museum. “Many people in the cultural field feel the same way,” she said on RPP Noticias. “I understand that those murals were done within a plan for public auctions and they should be respect-

ed.” However at least one prominent artist, Fernando de Szyszlo, supports Castañeda’s decision, saying that the historic centre is no place for the brightly coloured murals. “The murals completely deform the architecture. They distort the vision of the city,” he said.(Peruvian Times)

n Hamburg, Germany, the St. Pauli red light district is one of its top entertainment destinations, attracting as many as 20 million visitors a year with its mix of popular nightclubs and legal prostitution. However, according to engadget, outsiders routinely relieve themselves against walls (and just about any other vertical surface they can stumble into) which leaves much of the mile-long St. Pauli stretch smelling like a latrine. The St. Pauli merchants association is fighting back by coating the most heavily trafficked walls with UltraEver Dry, a hyper-hydrophobic nano paint originally developed by Nissan. When urine (or vomit) hits this paint, it splashes back with a vengeance, soaking the offender's pants and shoes with his own mellow yellow

filth. Even more insidious, the merchants association has only posted warning signs on some of the treated surfaces, so you'll never be sure if it's going to be you or the wall getting hosed. The German city may have found just the weapon Calcutta would love to use in the fight to save its walls from the pee brigade, says the Telegraph (India). In Calcutta, also described in The Telegraph as “Toilet Town”, the only deterrent to soiling a public or private wall is Section 68A of the Calcutta Police Act 1866, which carries a fine of Rs 10 [GUY$33] for urinating in public. If the fine is a paltry amount, it adds, the police's record of invoking this little-known provision is pathetic.

The paint’s base is made of organic solvents and when applied on a surface, it forms a gel-based coating that creates micro-sized air structures on the wall surface, which acts as a reflector and has super repelling properties. The coating creates a contact angle of 100-150 degrees between the surface and the water droplets, resulting in the urine bouncing back at the person at a certain angle. The technology is like the microstructure of hairs on a lily leaf that make water roll off. The paint has lesser durability when applied on wood or a brick surface. Speaking to some offenders for The Telegraph report, many cited the convenience of urinating whenever they wanted; others said they relieve themselves in public because others do too.

A Classic Confusion

CROSSWORD

Q: What is the chicken and the egg dilemma?

T

he classic question, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” has befuddled scientists, philosophers and regular folks alike. The oldest recorded reference to this conundrum goes back to Greek historian Mestrius Plutarchus, born in 46AD. This age-old paradox now has some intriguing -and scientific -- answers. If it is any type of egg then since evolution asserts that birds evolved from reptiles, the first bird that looked like a chicken was a mutant offspring of almostchicken-hybrid parents, one of which laid an egg from which emerged this first chicken-type bird. So the egg came first.

Some researchers in 2010 declared, “the chicken must have come first as the formation of eggs is only possible thanks to a protein found in the chicken’s ovaries.” The egg can therefore only exist if it has been created inside a chicken. Millions of years ago an egg laying spe-

cies created proto chickens that in turn laid proto chicken eggs.Due to some slight change (mutation), one of these eggs produced the first chicken, which in turn would lay the first chicken egg.

Therefore, the chicken came first. Weighing in on the matter, well-known physicist Stephen Hawking says it’s the egg, so too does astrophysicist Neil De Grasse Tyson, who says it’s the egg -- laid by a bird that was not

a chicken. Whether it was from a true chicken or proto/hybrid chicken, a chicken egg or a proto/hybrid chicken egg -the first true chicken came from an egg. Ultimately, the egg came first.
