A

year ago, in February 2014, scientists and local community members at the Caiman House Field Station in Yupukari, North Rupununi began a new phase of their long-running research project on the ecology of the black caiman, the largest aquatic predator in Guyana and the Amazon.

The researchers started collecting stomach content samples from live black caiman to investigate what kinds of food they like to eat and if the caiman prefer different prey in different areas of the Rupununi.

This research is important because it will lead to better understanding of how the diets of caiman and people overlap, and if they compete for the same resources.

This year the Caiman House Field Station staff and scientists are continuing their research on black caiman feeding patterns, and they are beginning yet another phase of their important work: the research team has started attaching tracking devices to the tails of some of the black caiman in the region to gain insight

The males may especially move quite extensively as they look for food and access to females, who typically do not move around as much as the males.

n route to Lethem or Brazil from Georgetown, when you cross the Essequibo River, you pass through the Iwokrama forest on the road that is famously called “the Linden-Lethem road”.

This road is 72 km in length and presents opportunities for spotting various species of wildlife, including many birds.

Iwokrama is protected, and the public is encouraged to respect the wildlife and enjoy the views as no hunting or fishing is allowed within this protected area.

Along this road one may also notice the beautiful array of plant life, many of which are termed “pioneer” or “secondary” species.

Pioneers are the first species that establish themselves in areas that are opened up; they are essentially “light-loving” plants.

Pump (Cecropiaspp), one species of which is used to make a tea that is said to have health benefits. Congo Pump shares a beautiful symbiotic relationship with ants as they offer glycogen rich tissue as food and in return receive protection against other predators by the ants.

Additionally, the Futui (Jacaranda copaia) can be seen. When flowering, it displays a stunning purple flower on its crown, and its wood is used for light work, including coffin making.

There is also the Palecouria guinanesis, which belongs to the coffee family and displays beautiful red, finger-like flowers.

Beautiful and majestic vines are also found growing along the road. The Passiflora spp are known for gorgeous floral displays.

Miss Global International started in 2005 and has been a success since then, with its contestants gaining recognition both locally and abroad. The pageant was formerly known as the Miss Commonwealth Beauty pageant.

The Shaping of Guyanese Literature

he theme for World Storytelling Day 2015 is Wishes.

Wishes could be of a good or bad nature. You can’t be indifferent to wishes, and you can’t be too careful for what you wish. (Remember the foolish couple and their three wishes.)

But generally, wishes ought to give positive vibrations, a good feeling, euphoria, a feeling of goodness. Incidentally, storytelling also ought to give a feeling of euphoria.

So if we put storytelling and wishes together, we ought to get an explosion of goodness.

The themes for the previous five years were as follows: 2010 - Light and Shadow

2011 – Water 2012 – Trees 2013 - Fortune and Fate 2014 - Monsters and Dragons A theme acts as a guide; giving direction to content.

But this applies where the storytelling machinery is well oiled, institutionalized and blessed with proper funding. What else can you wish for!

Storytelling is as old as the history of man, enmeshed in oral literature.

But World Storytelling Day is a manifestation of the new millennium that has its roots in several initiatives started at the end of the previous millennium.

For instance, in the early 1990s, Sweden organised an event labelled, All Storytellers Day, falling on March 20. In the late 1990s, storytellers

in Perth, Australia, coordinated a five-week long celebration of story, commemorating March 20 as the International Day of Oral Narrators. Nearer to home (Guyana), places like Mexico and other South American countries were already celebrating March 20 the National Day of Storytellers.

When we think of storytelling, we tend to relegate it to the past. Who wants to sit down around the fireside, a hammock, under a silk cotton tree, by the black water canal…and be molested by mosquitoes and sandflies while smoke gets in your eyes? Who want to relive the past, the invaluable past that has entrusted us with so much wisdom? The future is blazing screens and apps. Who wants to learn from Kwe-

kwe, Maticore and Katha, which is the Hindi word for story? The future is screens and apps. Who wants the old community spirit? The future is as bright as this box in my hands.

Stories make up a great part of our lives. But ironically, storytelling is not a prominent part of our agendas unless, of course, if we make a living by telling stories or selling stories.

Wishes, on the other hand, take up a great part of our lives.

Wishing is a major part of our agendas. Wishing, dreaming or daydreaming can be both good and bad. A good thing is that it could extend the imagination, crossing borders, drifting in realms unknown, into magic realism like “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Marquez or “The Ventriloquist’s Tale”

When we think of wishes and of wishing, we might conjure images of witches and wizards - embodi-

ments that could or could not grant us our wishes.

Or we may conjure those embodiments as evil causing us harm. Or lead us on the right path. Yes, like in the “Wizard of Oz”, “Alice in Wonderland”, Aladdin in “The Book of One Thousand and One Nights”, “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “Cinderella” and Harry Potter stories.

Or we may take flights of fantasies in order to direct how we want a wish to unfold. In this way, we create stories.

For instance in our own rags to riches story, we go down a certain path to wealth; if that path is too slow, we could speed it up. That’s one good thing about wishing and dreaming. If the situation gets ugly, we could back up and start over.

Fascinating stuff that – creating stories.

So, if we put story and wishes together then the celebration of World Storytelling Day 2015 ought to be quite intriguing.

assava bread is considered a traditional staple of indigenous Guyanese, and a national dish today.

Cassava, or manioc or yucca, was the staple crop for pre-Columbian South America by the time the Portuguese arrived in Brazil in 1500.

Travelling to Africa for slaves, the Portuguese introduced the cassava to

the continent around 1550 and to India by 1700. It is claimed to have reached Asia by the start of the 19th century via the Spanish.

Cassava bread, which is made after preparing the cassava, is a basic staple usually eaten with fresh fish or a meat dish.

among indigenous people or travellers on long trips in the interior.

Robert H. Schomburgk was one such traveller whose Guiana expeditions in the 19th century often relied on cassava bread.

Cassava bread making produces other ingredients that are used up to prepare other traditional indigenous food items such as casareep, which is a main ingredient in pepper pot, and farine, which is used to make porridge, or used like rice in a meal.

Cassava bread is made by first peeling then grating the cassava before extracting its toxic juice with a traditional matapi.

The cassava is then pounded in a mortar and

sifted to a powder. It is spread on a circular griddle over a fire and cooked on both sides as a flat, thin round cake.

The bread is often placed on rooftops to dry in the hot sun. This helps to preserve the bread so it lasts longer, which means the almost-allExtracting the toxic juice using the matapi. Cassava bread has also been used to make quinches from sweet shredded or grated coconut spread between cassava bread that is smaller and thicker than traditional cassava bread.

It is unclear if this is an adaptation of the cassava bread among the African slaves or Indian or other indentured servants later brought to then British Guiana to work on the sugar estates, or if the snack was introduced to the territory by one of these groups.

At least five of the South American giants live in the Kanuku Mountains - the Harpy Eagle, Black Caiman, Giant River Otter, Arapaima fish and the Giant Anteater.

Helping cancer treatment Keep your Kidneys Healthy patients manage their diet

ecause cancer and cancer treatment affect the body in various ways, some patients discover that all food tastes metallic, or a cup of tea or coffee becomes unappealing.

Patients often experience a metallic taste when chemotherapy drugs get into saliva and the chemicals encounter taste buds.

Their sense of taste and smell, and their appetite has been affected. According to BBC Health, bitterness is the taste most affected by cancer and its treatment, meaning familiar food and drink often becomes unpalatable.

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, located in London, England, is a pioneering centre that uses daily research to not only introduce new treatments that save lives, but also to diagnose and care for cancer patients.

On Feb 19, 2015, the registered charity introduced “The Royal Marsden Cancer Cookbook” featuring recipes that have been selected to be suitable for patients during and after cancer treatment.

Edited by Dr Clare Shaw, consultant dietician at The Royal Marsden and published by Kyle Books, the book also features recipes from celebrity chefs.

The cookbook contains recipes and tips intended to help cancer patients overcome their eating dif-

ficulties. It offers advice on how to adapt recipes -- like perhaps adding a dash of Tabasco sauce or chilli powder to alter the flavour.

It also has advice on exactly what kinds of foods might be palatable and provide the right balance of nutrients -- for people during and after treatment experiencing various side effects, i.e. dry mouth, nausea or taste change.

The cookbook also offers recipes for soft or moist foods, which are best when side effects like dry or sore mouth develop.

Shaw noted that it is sometimes hard to know what to eat. Many of her patients eat a lot of soup.

"It's liquid, it goes down easily, it's a prime choice,” she told the BBC, “But, as a dietician, I will often talk to them about the fact that soup is often low in energy, and it's often low in protein.

"So people might be using it as a replacement for a meal, but it's not providing the same nourishment as a meal.”

The main risk factors for developing kidney disease are diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease, and a family history of kidney failure.

The US National Kidney Disease Education Programme suggests keeping your blood pressure at the target set by your health care provider to help keep your kidneys healthy.

It also advises a reduction of your daily salt intake, while choosing foods

that are healthy for your heart, such as fresh fruits, fresh or frozen vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods.

Limiting your alcohol intake, being more physically active and losing weight if you are overweight can all help keep kidneys functioning normally.

If you smoke, take steps to quit, since cigarette smoking can also make kidney damage worse. If you have diabetes, control your blood glucose level.

It is important that you get your blood and urine checked for kidney disease, and manage your diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

1 small thin-skinned orange 275g self-rising flour 3 level tsp baking powder 275g caster sugar 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 4 free-range eggs 1tsp ground cinnamon 1tsp mixed spice FOR THE FILLING 50g unsalted butter, softened 175g icing sugar, sifted, plus a little extra for dusting 2 level tbsp orange pulp, reserved from the cake mix Method Preheat the oven to 180˚C/350˚F/ gas 4. Grease and line two 20cmdeep sandwich tins.

Place the whole orange in a saucepan, cover with boiling water and simmer until soft, about 20 mins. Set aside to cool.

When the orange is cool enough to handle, cut in half and remove any pips.

Transfer the whole orange, skin included, to a food-processor and process until medium chunky. Remove and reserve 2 level tbsp of the orange pulp for the icing.

Add the remaining cake ingredients to the processor and blend until just smooth.

Divide the mixture evenly between the two tins.

Bake in the oven for 25-30 mins. When the cake is shrinking away from the sides and is springy to touch, remove from the oven. Leave to cool in the tins for a few moments, then turn out onto a cooling rack

The diagnosis is based on culture and examination of tissue and fluid samples.

The best way to control pigeons is to change their environment: Remove roosting niches and seal any crevices, large

openings, and entrances in high areas to discourage pigeons.

Screen off water sources (like rooftop air conditioners) from which pigeons might drink.

Never leave food out where pigeons can get it.

Keep garbage containers closed. Dispose of garbage on a regular basis.

On flat roofs or ledges, use bristling wires, also known as porcupine wires, or sticky pastes that will discourage pigeons from landing and gathering.

ayn Malik decides to take a break from One Direction's tour following rumors that he cheated on Little Mix's Perrie Edwards.

"Zayn has been signed off with stress and is flying back to the UK to recuperate," a rep said. "The band wish him well and will continue with their performances in Manila and Jakarta."

Malik was accused of two-timing his girlfriend after he was spotted holding hands with a blonde girl outside Seduction club in Phuket, Thailand. The Duchess and her husband Prince William are expecting their second baby at "mid-to-end of April," she said to a volunteer who asked her at the Brookhill Children's Centre in Woolwich on Wednesday.

Kate, 33, was meeting with parents and visiting an on-site nursery at the children’s centre. The centre is run by Home Start charity, an organization with a network of 15,000 volunteers that help parents and young families.

in Diesel dashed straight from the hospital where he and wife Paloma Jimenez had been staying with their newborn baby on Wednesday, March 18 — because nothing was going to stop him honoring his late friend Paul Walker at the first Californian “Furious 7” screening.

The action hero, who became a dad of three on Monday, March 16, was choked with emotion as he spoke about the making of the his latest movie, and told fans how usually he and Walker spent time together at the premieres of the “Fast and Furious” films.

"I had to come from the hospital, and I had to introduce the first screening in California where the whole franchise started," Diesel, 47, told the audience. "As you know this was a very personal and important film to us, every time when

I saw the movie at the premiere, Paul Walker and I would go off to the side, and he would always tell me, 'Vin, the best one's still in the can,'" he continued.

After telling viewers to be mindful of the fact that others have to wait a little to see the film (which hits theaters on Friday, April 3), so to keep the story line quiet, the actor's mood became somber.

"This was a labor of love," he said. "It was in some ways the hardest movie that I ever had to do because the relationships that you see on film are so real, when the tragedy happened, I lost my best friend, I lost my brother."

Ranveer Singh: 'I still love and respect Aamir Khan'

anveer Singh has said he loves and respects Aamir Khan despite the PK star's public criticism of the AIB

Khan described the comedy roast of Singh and Arjun Kapoor as "violent" for its use of profanity and graphic sex jokes.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2015, he told IANS: "Even though Aamir did not like AIB Roast, I still love him and respect him from the bottom of my heart."

atrina Kaif has said she is more concerned with working on good films rather than bagging projects with the Khans.

The actress, who has starred with Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan,

said her priority is to do good work.

"People want to work with them (the Khans) because they are icons of Hindi cinema, but I don't think people are saying that that's all they want to do," she told IANS. "If you are an actor, your job is to act and to be a part of a good film and do good work."

Kaif added that there are strong roles for women in movies today.

"Even in the films which I've done with Salman and Shah Rukh - Ek Tha Tiger and em Jab Tak Hai Jaan - both were extremely strong roles for me, for any girl to do. So, I don't think it's just about whom you are acting with," she explained.

"I've worked with actors like Govinda, Irrfan Khan, John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh. It's all been amazing."

hah Rukh Khan has taken to Twitter to share the experience of shooting for “Fan”.

Although the actor suffered an on-set injury, he insisted that he is revelling in the shoot for the film directed by Maneesh Sharma.

Injections galore, running like a duck. Not that I don't like ducks but it sucks!"

In the following post, he shared a picture of himself wearing pink leggings, writ-

Guyanese artist captures African culture in thought-provoking paintings

I

Artist Philbert Gajadhar explains his art at a past exhibition at Castellani House

n the 1980s, UG lecturer and prominent national artist Philbert Gajadhar began a gradual intellectual interrogation of his works’ content and its specificity to a singular ethno-cultural group within a multi-cultural context.

This was fuelled by the similarities he observed between the traditional African practices described to him by Dr Doris Rogers, (based on her experiences in Africa) and those he observed among Hindus in Guyana.

However, his interrogation did not materialise in his art of the period; the germination had only begun.

Gajadhar’s musuku tree (a Bemba symbol of fertility) did not burst forth from the soil and bear fruit until

his time in Botswana (20032006) led him to Zambia, and a personal journey that resulted in a deep familiarising with Bemba culture, deepened by a further five months spent between 2012 and 2013.

Gajadhar approaches his reference to Bemba culture from lived reality. His is not an artificial study of a culture of fascination for a superficial transplantation of its symbols, lore and beliefs. Gajadhar has integrated Bemba with his Hindu identity and multicultural situation of nurture.

Consequently, while the paintings are largely instructive on an aspect of Bemba culture and belief, they reinforce the points of synchronicity with Guyanese culture, even offering in some instances traditional symbolism and, by extension, memory for quotidian objects whose symbolism was lost to the agonies of the impositions on the African in South American space.

The hoe, for instance, has significance in relation to the hut and the pestle in relation to the mortar. These find presence in Gajadhar’s imagery.

Gajadhar’s paintings are largely based on the chisungu ceremony of the Bemba. Through the ceremony, a girl is initiated into womanhood as she is instructed on her duties as a wife and a mother. Within the ceremony, ceremony-specific wall and floor paintings are made and special pottery dug up from secret hiding places and used.

These objects of ceremonial art are called Mbusa.

Each Mbusa has an associated didactic song and dance, and through their use reflect the Bemba belief that by seeing rather than hearing one is better able to learn.

In like manner to Caribbean song, the songs of the Bemba have double meanings so they can be sung among children and their true meaning not be discerned.

In Guyanese queh queh, the dances/mimetic acts are performed and the initiated girl is expected to mimic the actions of the performers; this mimicry is a demonstration of learning.

If she successfully performs her mimetic acts, she performs a special closing action as she says, “With

me, I have grown, I have just picked the beads.”

These beads would have been used to bless the ceremony and the ceremony’s matron with right words to inspire the young woman to be a good wife and a good mother.

While Gajadhar’s content is informed by the Bemba, his aesthetic is a culmination of stages in his journey exploring the technical nuances of his medium and the synthesising of influences from artists as diverse as Dudley Charles, Bernadette Persaud, Wifredo Lam and Picasso.

From Charles he claims influence on his use of colour, the layering of paint in washes, and the manner of “breaking up” of figures and the space within the picture plane. These influences from Charles are evident and not surprisingly, as he claims Charles as his most significant artist-influence.

Survey finds Internet has negative impact on morality

A new study from Pew Research polled residents in 32 emerging and developing nations about the influence that the Internet is having on their society.

Of those questioned, 42 per cent said the net has had a bad influence on morality while 30 per cent provided the same an-

swer as it relates to politics.

Of all the individual countries polled, none said the Internet has had a positive influence on morality. The Internet isn’t allevil, however, as an overwhelming 64 per cent of respondents believe it has had a good influence on education.

Similarly, 53 per cent said it has influenced personal relationships in a positive manner while 52 per cent said the same about the impact on the economy. (Tech Spot)

Intel, Google, TAG Heuer Team Up for Luxury Smartwatch

ntel and Google are joining Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer to design and launch a luxury smartwatch by the end of the year, the three companies announced Thursday at the Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show in Basel, Switzerland.

The so far unnamed smartwatch will be powered by an Intel-designed chipset and run Android Wear, Google's modified version of its Android mobile operating system, which is optimized for wearables.

The device could arrive any time between October and December.

Net neutrality rules let FCC police future ISP conduct

he U.S. Federal Communications Commission's new net neutrality rules allow the agency to police future network management practices and business models rolled out by broadband providers, raising concerns among critics that an activist commission will inject itself into ISP board rooms.

"We don't really know where this is going to go, but the FCC is going to

sit there as a referee," Republican FCC member Ajit Pai said Wednesday, during a Senate hearing. "The problem is, nobody even knows what the game is, what the rules are."

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler and other supporters of the net neutrality rules have defended the future conduct standard, saying it's an attempt by the agency to keep an eye on ISPs without adopting

overly restrictive bans on business plans.

The net neutrality regulations contain so-called bright-line rules prohibiting broadband providers from selectively blocking or throttling legal Web traffic and from charging Web-based services from paying for prioritized traffic, but the future conduct standard gives the FCC the authority to prohibit other practices going forward. he credenza is known as a sideboard or buffet, even a bookcase, especially one without any legs.

It takes its name from a credence (credenza is Italian for credence) which is a small table where the bread and wine rest before consecration in Christian services, and later a Renaissance sideboard used mainly to rest a

valuable item like a plate upon.

(Perhaps you can see the ecclesiastic connection to its reputation as a lofty noun from this.)

It has been found in many homes since, but, in keeping with the clean lines of modern furniture, the credenza over the years has lost some of its ornateness.

Nowadays credenzas are also used to house (and hide) electronic or tech equipment in the home, or paper and office supplies

400g flaked salmon lemon (3 slices, optional) 300ml milk 3 eggs (hard-boiled) 60g butter

1 onion, finely chopped 2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional) 200g long grain rice 1litre chicken stock (or water)

Method Put the flaked salmon or smoked haddock in a deep frying pan with the lemon, cover with milk and simmer for 6 minutes or until cooked through Remove the fish taking care to remove any bones Melt the butter in a frying pan, add the onion and cook for 5 minutes Add the cayenne pepper and cook for another 2 minutes Add the rice, stir to coat in the oil, pour in the chicken stock, bring to the boil, and simmer until the stock is absorbed and the rice is cooked The length of time depends on the rice you're using so you may need to add more water to stop it boiling dry before the rice is cooked Add the fish and eggs and mix in carefully Serves 4

Run vinegar through the washing machine every six months to keep it fresh.

If you have an aquarium, save the water each time you change it and water your houseplants with it. It's full of nutrients and makes a great fertiliser.

The Mare and the Fawn S tories of unlikely animal friendships abound on the internet. While it is sometimes hard to knowthe actually true stories, there are officially documented cases of animal friendships from odd pairings such as owls and dogs, monkeys and capybaras, a leopard and a cow or cheetahs and a dog, to name a few.

There are also amazing stories of animals rescuing other animals, like Bonnie, a Morgan Quarter horse who rescued a newborn fawn.

It was the sometime in June 2006 on his farm in Montana USA, when owner Bob Muth noticed a coyote family keeping tabs on a white-tailed doe that was giving birth in the barnyard.

“Funny,” he mumbled, “it only reaches up to the middle of the ducks.”

However, while watching the impending tragedy in front of him, and before he could try to help, Bonnie the mare stepped in between the fawn and the coyotes. She then placed herself over the fawn.

Seeing the horse planted firmly in front of them, the coyotes gave up and went away. Muth said he believes that the coyotes knew they didn’t stand a chance with the mare.

After the coyotes left, the mare licked and nudged the fawn to stand. The fawn managed to stand and even tried nursing but the mare was too high up.

Owl Monkey

he owl monkey (of the genus Aotus) is also known as Night monkey or Douroucouli because of its nocturnal lifestyle. It is the only monkey known to be active at night instead of during the day.

The owl monkey leaves its sleeping site at about 15 minutes after sunset and,after foraging and eating during the night, returns at sunrise every day.

They are widely distributed across southern Central America and northern South America.

Some species of the genus are found only in certain places in these regions.

Owl monkeys are frugivores ( they specialize in eating fruits) and supplement their diet with flowers, insects, nectar, and leaves. They are skilful at grabbing flying insects out of the air or snatching them off of a branch.

According to the Primate Info Net of the National Primate Research Centre, University of Wisconsin, owl monkeys have been successfully employed in biomedical research on malaria since the 1960s because of their natural resistance to the parasites that cause the disease.

Peru artists divided over removal of Lima murals

L

ima’s decision to paint over murals in its historic centre has created a division within the city’s artistic community, with one prominent painter defending the municipality’s decision to erase the art.

Lima Mayor Luis Castañeda confirmed that his administration was painting over murals that were commissioned during the administration of his predecessor and political rival, Susana Villarán.

Villarán’s administration, a strong supporter of the arts, had paid for the paintings in an attempt to spruce up Lima’s gritty downtown, whose colonial architecture has been falling apart for years despite the area being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site more than 25 years ago.

Several of the murals have now been covered by yellow paint, the colour of Castañeda’s right-wing Solidaridad Nacional party.

“The murals don’t go with the Historic Centre of Lima,” Castañeda said.

“Tomorrow [Friday March 13] all of the murals in central Lima are going to disappear,” he said in comments broadcast on AmericaTV. Most artists and political progressives have come out against Castañeda’s move.

On Saturday, the director of Lima Museum of Art (MALI), Natalia Majluf, said she would prefer the murals not be erased. The MALI is Lima’s top arts museum.

“Many people in the cultural field feel the same way,” she said on RPP Noticias. “I understand that those murals were done within a plan for public auctions and they should be respect-

ed.”

However at least one prominent artist, Fernando de Szyszlo, supports Castañeda’s decision, saying that the historic centre is no place for the brightly coloured murals.

“The murals completely deform the architecture. They distort the vision of the city,” he said.(Peruvian Times)

n Hamburg, Germany, the St. Pauli red light district is one of its top entertainment destinations, attracting as many as 20 million visitors a year with its mix of popular nightclubs and legal prostitution.

However, according to engadget, outsiders routinely relieve themselves against walls (and just about any other vertical surface they can stumble into) which leaves much of the mile-long St. Pauli stretch smelling like a latrine.

The St. Pauli merchants association is fighting back by coating the most heavily trafficked walls with UltraEver Dry, a hyper-hydrophobic nano paint originally developed by Nissan.

When urine (or vomit) hits this paint, it splashes back with a vengeance, soaking the offender's pants and shoes with his own mellow yellow

filth.

Even more insidious, the merchants association has only posted warning signs on some of the treated surfaces, so you'll never be sure if it's going to be you or the wall getting hosed.

The German city may have found just the weapon Calcutta would love to use in the fight to save its walls from the pee brigade, says the Telegraph (India).

In Calcutta, also described in The Telegraph as “Toilet Town”, the only deterrent to soiling a public or private wall is Section 68A of the Calcutta Police Act 1866, which carries a fine of Rs 10 [GUY$33] for urinating in public.

If the fine is a paltry amount, it adds, the police's record of invoking this little-known provision is pathetic.

The paint’s base is made of organic solvents and when applied on a surface, it forms a gel-based coating that creates micro-sized air structures on the wall surface, which acts as a reflector and has super repelling properties.

The coating creates a contact angle of 100-150 degrees between the surface and the water droplets, resulting in the urine bouncing back at the person at a certain angle.

The technology is like the microstructure of hairs on a lily leaf that make water roll off. The paint has lesser durability when applied on wood or a brick surface.

Speaking to some offenders for The Telegraph report, many cited the convenience of urinating whenever they wanted; others said they relieve themselves in public because others do too.

The oldest recorded reference to this conundrum goes back to Greek historian Mestrius Plutarchus, born in 46AD. This age-old paradox now has some intriguing -and scientific -- answers.

If it is any type of egg then since evolution asserts that birds evolved from reptiles, the first bird that looked like a chicken was a mutant offspring of almostchicken-hybrid parents, one of which laid an egg from which emerged this first chicken-type bird.

So the egg came first.

Some researchers in 2010 declared, “the chicken must have come first as the formation of eggs is only possible thanks to a protein found in the chicken’s ovaries.”

The egg can therefore only exist if it has been created inside a chicken.

Millions of years ago an egg laying spe-

cies created proto chickens that in turn laid proto chicken eggs.Due to some slight change (mutation), one of these eggs produced the first chicken, which in turn would lay the first chicken egg.

Therefore, the chicken came first.

Weighing in on the matter, well-known physicist Stephen Hawking says it’s the egg, so too does astrophysicist Neil De Grasse Tyson, who says it’s the egg -- laid by a bird that was not

a chicken.

Whether it was from a true chicken or proto/hybrid chicken, a chicken egg or a proto/hybrid chicken egg -the first true chicken came from an egg.

Ultimately, the egg came first.
