As a fruit of Ecuador, our bananas have to travel many miles to reach markets in Europe and the UK, so accomplishing this goal is no easy matter. Controlling the ripening process and maximizing shelf life requires experience, great expertise and specialist equipment. At BanaBay, we understand how to grow the highest quality fruit and the ideal time to harvest it, as well having the ability to pack, store and transport it in perfect, temperature controlled conditions, before it arrives at the store.

Best quality bananas Bananas are amongst the most widely consumed foods in the world, with consumer demand for the fruit all year round; BanaBay are geared up for growth and as such are well placed to build market share. The bananas we produce are of the most popular variety Cavendish, and are grown on our independently audited plantations in the fertile soil of El Oro and Los Rios. We harvest them before they are mature, carefully selecting the fruit to meet European preference for shape and size.
Panama Canal
Life of a banana Processing & Packing Bananas require careful handling and, from the moment it is cut, the fruit is subject to stringent food safety and quality control procedures.
Stage 1 The bananas are transported by truck from our holding facility in Machala to the Port of Guayaquil.
Fresh cut product is prepared in our own fully equipped processing facilities and packed into specially developed airtight BanaBay bags, before being boxed and loaded into refrigerated containers ready to be shipped within 24 hours.
ECUADOR
Stage 2 They start their 22-25 day journey to Tilbury or Felixstowe in the UK.
SOUTH AMERICA SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN
With fresh fruit, the challenge is to design packaging solutions (primarily recyclable corrugated) sufficiently robust to withstand the rigors of transport and handling, while also protecting the fruit from bruising when exposed to moisture, shock and vibration.Â
Therefore, BanaBay has commissioned specially designed packaging using carefully specified materials; we also use recyclable plastics, which helps us to deliver the freshest quality product to every one of our retailers every day, while also preserving the environment.
Transportation During transportation, our bananas are kept at a constant temperature of 14’C. This prevents them from producing their natural ripening agent ethylene and creates a window of 3-4 weeks for storage and transport. Once dispatched from the Port of Guayaquil in Ecuador, our bananas spend just over three weeks in reefer containers on the ocean, landing at Tilbury or Felixstowe in the UK.
NORTH SEA
Stage 4 The bananas spend five days ripening before being distributed throughtout the uk.
Stage 3
UNITED KINGDOM CELTIC SEA
Once the cargo arrives in Tilbury or Felixstowe it will then be transported to our specialist ripening partner.
From here they are transported by refrigerated trucks to a specialist ripening facility in the UK, before travelling onward to third party Distribution Centres, prior to their final delivery to customers.
Because BanaBay offers ripening, cold storage, sorting, repacking, pick-up and delivery services, our customers can avoid costly out-ofstocks and benefit from just-in-time delivery to maximize returns.
Ripening
Tracking
Banana ripening is a complex job. If the fruit is exposed to temperatures that are too high, it will ripen rapidly and irregularly, resulting in poor keeping quality. Too low and it will ripen too slowly, with degradation in taste. Expert ripening is key to taste, colour and texture. The bananas therefore spend 5 days in purposebuilt ripening chambers to bring them to perfect condition.
All our shipments - including the boxes and containers used in transport - are labelled and coded so that the product, batch, country of origin and plantation can be easily identified at any time. This means that all BanaBay products can be traced back through all the handling processes to where it originated. So, in the unlikely event of a problem, this can be specified and remedied quickly.
Storage & Distribution Our partners network of thirdparty chilled warehouses, which are regulated by thermometers, hydrometers and pulp temperature sensors, enable fast, safe and convenient distribution of our bananas.
As BanaBay bananas originate from our own plantations, it is easy to trace back our shipments to its source. Our records are held for long periods of time and are available to customers if requested.

All our plantation facilities hold a GlobalG.A.P. certification. This worldwide standard assures Good Agricultural Practices and sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the globe, allowing producers, suppliers and buyers to harmonize standards. Now the world’s most widely implemented farm certification scheme, an increasing number of customers demand evidence of GLOBALG.A.P. certification as a prerequisite for doing business, demonstrating that high quality foods have been produced safely and sustainably. Unlike other farm certification schemes, GLOBALG.A.P. has definitive rules for growers, and each production unit is assessed by independent third party auditors.
